Baseball Takes Wake Series with 5-2 Sunday Win

BlockSHomePlate

NC State Baseball downed Wake on Sunday by a score of 5-2 to take the weekend series in Winston and run their season record to 16-5 (3-3 ACC).

Ethan Ogburn took the hill for the Pack on Sunday and went 5.2 strong innings to get the win (2-1).  He gave up just one run (unearned) while scattering 5 hits and striking out 4.  Anthony Tzamtzis and Grant Sasser would both do a solid job anchoring the middle innings (Tzamtzis 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB; Sasser 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB), and Chris Overman (0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H) would come on with one down in the 9th to retire the final two batters in order to preserve the win and earn his 3rd save of the season.

Wolfpack bats broke the scoreless tie in the top of the 3rd when Grant Clyde (1 for 3, 2 runs scored) led off the inning with his 4th double of the year.  Jake Fincher (1 for 4, 2 runs scored, stolen base (8)) moved him over to third while also beating out an infield bunt for the single.  Next up, Bryan Adametz’s 2 RBI double scored them both.

The Pack would add 2 more in the 5th and another in the 7th on the RBI single of Brett Austin (2 for 4, RBI, stolen base (7)).  Austin’s hitting streak now stands at 12 games.

On the Horizon:

State Baseball is next in action on Tuesday (3/19) when they welcome UNC-G to the Doak for a 6pm game.  The Pack will then hit the road again, this time to Charlottesville to face the Cavs for a three game road tilt next weekend.

**SPECIAL NOTE**:  Next weekend’s UVa series is slightly different schedule wise.  There will be no Friday game, and game three will be Monday and will be televised.  And not just crappy ESPN3 televised, but REAL TV televised.  Well OK…semi-real…

3/18 Monday – NCSU @ UVa – ESPNU – 7pm

So I’ve given you fair and advanced warning.  Don’t come whining to me when you miss it.

Selection Sunday is looming.  Go here to talk about it and/or to congratulate Miami for their ACC Title (or to thank them for keeping you know who from taking it).

    3-3 in ACC play?

    Not great

Great job-winning any series on the road is a tall order. Having Sr’s like Ogburn, Sasser and Overman at hand on Sunday is a recipe to take at least 2 out of 3 in the many weekend matchups ahead. We haven’t even seem Jernigan, but if all holds together there’s a core of 4 quality starters beginning to form. Teams built that way are always more dangerous in Conference and NCAA Regional play.

Big series next weekend in Charlottesville. UVA won their series on the road at Clemson this weekend and will be the best team the Pack has played so far this year.

Anybody have any news about Turner’s rehab?
