2012-13 BJD/SFN All-ACC Selections

I do this every year, and despite my general malaise, am back for more:

Coach of the Year: Jim Larranaga, Miami

This selection can be explained by one word – duh. But as you know, I like to run my big mouth. Before the season started, I consistently said that I expected someone other than Duke or State would win the league…I just had no idea who it would be. Turns out that when Miami is on, they are the best team in the country, and by a comfortable margin. The ultimate “high risk, high reward” NCAAT pool team. Coach Larranaga has shown before what kind of magic he can work with an upperclassman-laden team (George Mason’s awesome Final Four run), so maybe we should have seen this one coming. The question remains – what does he have for a second act?

Player of the Year: Seth Curry, Duke

As is my tradition, I will vote for a guy with no shot at winning. But I was waiting for one of four guys (two Canes, two Devils) to put his thumb on the scale…and Seth Curry did so by burying the Holes early and often Saturday night. It’s extra impressive when you factor in incredible defensive improvement, and the fact that he hasn’t practiced for months due to injury. Tough kid. Rightful POY.

Rookie of the Year: TJ “Buckets” Warren, NC State

In a down year for impact freshmen, our man Buckets impressed the most. I liken him to the Rain Man (counting cards in Vegas, with my brother Charlie Babbitt) of offensive basketball. He hit the wall, then crashed right through it. Defended very well for a freshman, too. Let’s hope that his initial run isn’t his high point (ala Ernie Myers).

All-ACC (First Team):

Seth Curry, Duke
Shane Larkin, Miami
Erick Green, Virginia Tech
Mason Plumlee, Duke
Kenny Kadji, Miami

Erick Green is a one-man band, and unlike Stoglin last year…it’s not a matter of selfishness. The Hokies really, really suck (except when they play State). Shane Larkin is the best player on the best team, but was uneven down the stretch. On any other team, Plumlee would get double teamed constantly. He’s in the perfect situation. Good player, but not great. Kadji gets slot five by default, with Talibeard playing two bad games in the last week of the season.

All-ACC (Second Team):

Reggie Bullock, UNC
Richard “Talibeard” Howell, NC State
Joe Harris, Virginia
Quinn Cook, Duke
Lorenzo Brown, NC State

Bullock had a very solid year, and provided a surprising amount of leadership for the Holes. Talibeard led the league in rebounding by a wide margin, ditto Zo in assists (ACC play only, which is all I take into account). They just picked an awful time to have a wretched game. A Duke friend pointed out that Quinn Cook was their unsung hero, and the stats bear that out. He does it quietly, but he produces. I find Joe Harris extremely overrated. I suspect nobody will agree with my assessment.

All-ACC (Third Team):

Michael Snaer, Florida State
PJ Hairston (revised pick), UNC
Durand Scott, Miami
Akil Mitchell, Virginia
Ryan Anderson, Boston College

There’s a HUGE dropoff between the first two teams and this one. But all of these guys were at least steady, and played good defense. Gotta pick somebody. McAdoo and Calvin were expected to battle for POY honors, but each had too many games where they flat-out sucked. In the end, I wouldn’t give either honorable mention. Maybe a dishonorable shake of the head. Talent doesn’t always equal production.

Dexter Strickland couldn’t make second team all So-Con. Wowzers, if I’m Snaer I hang myself seeing my name in the same paragraph as Stickland’s.

  2. state73 03/11/2013 at 9:57 AM #

How in the HELL can you leave Richard Howell off the first team?

  3. BJD95 03/11/2013 at 9:59 AM #

Strickland has the best assist to turnover ratio in the league. Like 3.6:1. Glue guy.

I love Talibeard, but he was terrible the last two games of the season. That matters.

“How in the HELL can you leave Richard Howell off the first team?”

I love me some Richard, but where he lands isn’t just about him but also the guys ahead of him.

    Good list BJD.

I know Wake didn’t have much of a season overall, but I think Travis McKie deserves a hard look. His line was somewhere around 13 and 7 per game and something like 40 blocks.

  6. Wulfpack 03/11/2013 at 10:26 AM #

Plumlee will be POY. Howell second team. Calvin a no show. Agree that Warren is ROY.

  7. Pack Mentality 03/11/2013 at 10:27 AM #

Booker of Clemson should get some kind of honorable mention if he was always as good as he was against us. I didn’t see his overall season, but he was a beast against State.

Good call on Warren, I guess his only competition would have been from somebody on Duke.

I don’t know who you’d leave off the 1st team, maybe Kadji, but I’d love to have seen Brown or Howell there.

  8. BJD95 03/11/2013 at 10:34 AM #

UNC colleague that I respect is pushing for Hairston over Strickland. Apparently in some games I didn’t see, Strickland was terrible.

  9. BJD95 03/11/2013 at 10:43 AM #

OK, I have been talked into it. Hairston over Strickland. Multiple people attest he’s a better defender, too. And his insertion into the lineup turned the whole season around.

  10. Wulfpack 03/11/2013 at 10:47 AM #

Yes, Hairston has been lethal. Could be drafted.

  11. state73 03/11/2013 at 11:05 AM #

I agree Howell’s last 2 games were not his best. Plumlee had at least 3 no show games. Howell was still the second most consistent player in the conference after Green of VT.

  12. TheCOWDOG 03/11/2013 at 11:20 AM #

Thanks Beej…good call on dropping. Strickland.

BC’s Hanlan probably put a more consistent rookie year together than Warren. Warren’s flashes of brilliance would be tough to strike as your fave, though.

  13. BJD95 03/11/2013 at 11:23 AM #

I very well should have given Hanlan more consideration. Agree that it’s a ceiling vs baseline decision. It’s sort of a hedge that I gave BC the last 3rd team slot. Hard to “honor” a team that bad twice, though they did show more fight than the other bottom feeders.

  14. eas 03/11/2013 at 12:16 PM #

That is crazy that CJ is a no show on the 1st and 2nd team BUT no surprise. I know the kid is struggling right now but his stock has really dropped from last year.

“Buckets” should certainly pick up ROY. Howell will land in the 2nd team. Man I hate he is leaving! Due to CJ’s poor play this year I see him possibly back next year unless we get a run in the Tourney that makes him shine a little.

  15. wolfbuff 03/11/2013 at 12:29 PM #

I mostly agree with the placements and honors, though I would give Green POY. Yeah, they suck. But for him to be their only legitimate scorer and a target for every defensive game plan and STILL score 25 pts/game is pretty incredible.

Rich played himself right out of 1st team All ACC with his last 2½ games. I don’t know, maybe he got tired of getting rebounds. Hope he’s not checked out.

I’m struggling to think of a more disappointing showing ever in the ACC than CJ’s performance this year.

As for Gott, I”m glad he’s able to connect with his players, but he also has to stand for something. CJ – and to some degree Zo – should have sat more. Those who work hard, show maturity, and play well should get the playing time, period. Not his best coaching job by far.

Man, we’re going to be thin next year. I’m thinking at least a 3 guard line up. Maybe they pull a page out of ORW’s playbook and go 4 guards.

If Howell makes first team it will be at the expense of either Green or Kadji. He will be no higher than fifth in the voting. His last two games will hurt him more than they should because they were the last two games in the voter’s heads.

  17. NJpack 03/11/2013 at 12:47 PM #

Unfortunately for Howell, the last image the voters have of him is when he lost the ball out of bounds on a wide open break when the FSU game was on the line. All in all of course, it was a very solid season for him. If we still had Josh Davis, they could have been the twin towers of rebounding while CJ stewed on the bench.

    … BJD …. no arguments here… solid choices…. all the way around…

Plus… now ‘some State guys’ still have something to prove…. which should “add a little heat” to the Tournament this weekend.

To them, all I can say is:

Go ahead… prove us wrong…. we won’t mind one bit !!!

  19. Tau837 03/11/2013 at 1:20 PM #

No way Curry has any shot at POY. He is the third best player on his own team. Also, to cite his defensive improvement is curious, considering he is the worst rated defender on Duke’s roster, and mostly by a fair margin (http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/duke/2013.html).

The “rightful” POY is Green, who is all over the ACC leaderboards. Bias is the only player who ever won ACC POY on a losing team, so he may be excluded for that reason… which means you can cast your vote for him and stick to your guns with regard to choosing someone who really doesn’t have a shot.

Don’t really see the reasoning for Kadji over Howell. Compare (ACC stats only):

    Kadji 29.0 mpg, 14.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg, .525 fgp, .645 ftp, 9 ast (total), 32 to, 23 blk, 4 stl

    Howell 34.1 mpg, 12.3 ppg, 11.4 rpg, .497 fgp, .712 ftp, 31 ast, 27 to, 18 blk, 22 stl

IMO it’s an easy call to say that Howell both played better overall and meant more to his team.

I’m also not convinced about Curry over Harris for what for me would be the final first team spot. Without comparing stats on everyone as I did for Howell and Kadji, my gut says the first team should be Green, Plumlee, Howell, Larkin, and Harris.

For second team (again, without in depth analysis), I’d probably go with Curry, Kadji, Brown, Bullock, and Snaer.

Your third team selections look right, with the exception that I would bump Cook down to third team for Snaer.

From the expectations at the end of last season, it is hard to fathom that CJ is not on anyone’s list. I try hard to remember that these players are all basically still kids, and I don’t like to see fans come down too hard on them. I just wish someone could have figured out what was going on in CJ’s head. He is either too wound up or too lackadaisical; I can’t figure out which. The kid has a gift and has had great opportunities and support.

I was thinking, if I were looking at the entire NC State team as an NBA scout looking for talent to help my team, in what order would I rank the Pack players. My conclusion: Brown, Howell, Warren, Wood and Leslie, in that order, with Purvis not having enough of a resume to make a decision yet. I wonder how others would rank them?

  21. wekiser 03/11/2013 at 1:52 PM #

It is amazing to see how much Leslie’s stock has fallen since last year?!? I cannot believe where he is….the talent…completely unreal. I agree that he is not in the All-ACC teams. HOPEFULLY something changes and he tears it up in the tournament and the NCAA!!

  22. 44rules 03/11/2013 at 2:11 PM #

I still go with the shortstop’s kid as POY, and I easily pick Howell over Kenny.

I love me some Lo Brown, but he commits way too many turnovers to be first team.

  23. bill.onthebeach 03/11/2013 at 2:38 PM #

    Well… it’s official…

    http://www.wralsportsfan.com/three-from-duke-nc-state-make-all-acc-team/12208518/

    Congratulations… Richard, Lorenzo and CALVIN…

WE ARE DAMN PROUD OF ALL OF YOU….

Now go WIN the ACC tournament !!!!
(maybe some peeps will STF up now….)

  24. blpack 03/11/2013 at 2:41 PM #

Solid choices. As it turns out, Howell did make it. He deserves it. Happy for the kid!

  25. Wolfacct 03/11/2013 at 2:54 PM #

Maybe now CJ will pass it out to Howell at the foul line rather than try and split the double/triple team.
