(14)Miami at (19)NC State – Game Thread

Because Zo Brown is significantly hobbled, it seems BJD95 is too depressed to even have a raging semi (live blog, that is).  😀

Thus it will be the basic game thread today folks.

You know how these work.  Have at it.

Go Pack!

And be sure to check out the new SFN Forums if you haven’t already.  Lotsa cool new features over there.

“Just not a very good team.”

    I disagree.

No bubble yet, guys. Still a solid 9 or 10 seed.

  3. TMD11 02/02/2013 at 5:46 PM #

    Absolutely stupid stuff = LOSS….again.

  4. wpakgirl 02/02/2013 at 5:48 PM #

Disappointing ending but proud of our players. Never have I seen an ACC basketball player taunt like Johnson. — not even at CaroWHINA. Miami is not know for class thought — stomping on players in a football game comes to mind.

I’m with you, elvislives. I can’t think of one good reason CJ was throwing that ball in on the inbound pass when they knew Miami was going to trap whomever caught the inbound pass, which would necessitate throwing it back to the inbouder, then Miami would likely foul. Wood usually assumes that role, but not that time. However, CJ was killing it from the line up to that point.

The play call on our last possession was bad. They should have run something to CJ or Big Rich, not the one guy on the floor who would be feeling the pressure the most. It was a good look, but the nerves had to affect the shot. I’m sure he was told only to shoot if he had a good look, which he did, and he probably wanted to be the hero, so I can’t really blame the guy. He played amazing. The blame should be on Gott.

Nobody clutch on this team. Nobody. But plenty of chokers. Say what you want…good loss/bad loss, whatever. If you don’t have clutch and composure, then you can forget about close games, which seems the destiny of this team.

“In baseball, they keep track of wins/losses in 1 run games. Good teams are known for winning 1 run games, bad teams are known for losing 1 run games. Managers who are at the top of their game are known for being able to pull off 1 run wins in a much higher frequency than 1 run losses.

How many 1 possession losses does this make for State this year? How many more times does the same lesson need to be learned before it is corrected?”

Sorry, but that’s a whole lot of bull. There’s absolutely no statistical evidence that winning close games is a skill. 1 run games are essentially coin flips, and 1 point basketball games even moreso. Does it make us a better team if Rodney’s heave goes in? No, it just makes us lucky. Does it make us a worse team if Larkin’s super-tough shot went in? Nope, just makes us unlucky. That’s not to say there weren’t things that we could have done better, just means that in the grand scheme of a 40 minute game, 1 point either way at the end is essentially up to lady luck. Ken Pomeroy has written well about this:

    http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/a_post_about_winning

“Love the no-call on Johnson on the push off under the basket on the rebound.”

Much as I’d like to whine about that, it’s about the least egregious mistake the officials made in that game. It wasn’t a significant shove, and you just aren’t going to get that call in that position.

  8. WeAreCured 02/02/2013 at 5:51 PM #

And also Purv and CJ for their slop in the last two minutes.

  9. Pack Mentality 02/02/2013 at 5:52 PM #

State is that talented team that finds ways to lose games that it should win. No killer instinct whatsoever. Turnovers by Purvis, Warren, missed free throws by Leslie, poor shot selection by Lewis after the timeout, and no boxing out of the Miami guy on the last shot. Without EACH ONE of these mistakes happening on our part we would have won. What a first class choke job.

  10. MrPlywood 02/02/2013 at 5:53 PM #

Many of you whiners were predicting a big loss before the game even started, so I’m not sure what you’re complaining about now.

  11. JeremyH 02/02/2013 at 5:55 PM #

I don’t think there is a serious reason to get down on these guys now. Our start point guard was out and we discovered we are much deeper than originally thought. I hope that we can continue to utilize Lewis playmaking and calm head even when Brown returns. We have all the talent in the world, but we need someone out there that settles us down. There were some head scratching turnovers in this game, so you know Lewis can’t do everything.

  12. BAC79 02/02/2013 at 5:55 PM #

We are complaining about the way we played the last two minutes. That does not make anyone a whiner.

  13. WeAreCured 02/02/2013 at 5:56 PM #

It is insane that we all don’t expect this. As fans, we have seen the one point lead with the ball at a ten second shot clock differential scenario enough times to know we are going to lose. The St. Bonaventure miracle of last year is the lone time I recall winning on the last possession as opposed to missing a shot, then losing on the last possession. The other team never misses or fails to score.

It is not isolated to “this team.” It is every State team for the past couple of decades.

  14. eas 02/02/2013 at 5:57 PM #

I’m not so sure it wasn’t planned for Lewis to take that shot. Bad end of the game management regardless….very good game overall though

  15. wpakgirl 02/02/2013 at 5:58 PM #

We do have good talent. Sad to lose this one but we’ll be back!! Move on to the next one! Go Pack.

  16. elvislives 02/02/2013 at 5:59 PM #

No statistical evidence that winning one-run games is a skill? I am too fired up right now to read your link (I genuinely apologize) but I disagree.

State has now lost 4 conference games by 7 points total. I don’t need to read someone’s article to understand that in-game coaching decisions impact the outcome of close games.

Forget it, I don’t want to argue with other State fans that feel similar frustrations over this awful loss. I just want the team to show improvement over similar awful losses and witness in-game coaching decisions/plays that show that thought is being put into the execution of the talented players on the court.

Go Pack. Go Tyler Lewis. Go Lorenzo Brown’s ankle.

Go look in the mirror State coaches and prove that I am an ignorant fan that has mixed analogies (with the 1-run baseball losses) and simply does not understand your greater plan for taking this team where we all know that it can go.

  17. WeAreCured 02/02/2013 at 5:59 PM #

I’m not down on this team, as a whole. I’ll take going to the NCAA tournament and depending on the seed and draw, winning a game or two. It’s just that this truly is the “could have been” year, and it is past the point of sliding away, sans an ACC Tournament win.

    And it’s not whining. It’s lamenting/grieving. It’s healthy.

  18. xphoenix87 02/02/2013 at 6:02 PM #

I don’t get the complaining about Lewis’ last shot. It was the same side pick and roll with Rich that we’d been running to great effectiveness all game. They defended it to give Lewis an open mid-range jumper, and he took it. It was a good look with good floor balance on a shot he can make. He didn’t make it. You’re letting the result of the shot dictate your reaction to the look. I have no problem with that shot. The turnovers, CJ’s 2 fouls near the end, and the 2 missed chippies he had right at the rim earlier are a much bigger deal.

  19. highstick 02/02/2013 at 6:04 PM #

I know we’re not supposed to say anything negative about players, but Scott Wood did not even move on that last possession which, I think, forced Lewis to take that shot.

Go back and look at the clip, if available.!

    Elvislives and Pack Mentality

I couid not have said it better myself what both of you posted.

I hear the coach saying we are right there and we are getting better but there comes a time when the words just need to be put on a shelf. I know there are a bunch of fans today that are upset but until this team decides to play 40 minutes and not 39 minutes we will be right back here on SFN after a game making our same points whether popular or not to some State fans.

  21. Tuffy2 02/02/2013 at 6:11 PM #

There is nothing to go back and look at about Scott Wood or any fouls that occurred. Maybe even a bad pass or etc etc etc etc because it is what this team does near the end of many games we lose. Same mistakes equal same results.

  22. xphoenix87 02/02/2013 at 6:12 PM #

You don’t have to believe me, but there are mounds of statistical evidence in all sports which say that margin of victory is much more important in predicting future performance than wins and losses are, and that games decided by one score or less are essentially coin flips.

It’s actually slightly encouraging as we look towards the team’s future performance. It sucks that we’ve lost 4 games, but the fact that we’ve had 4 ACC games decided by 3 points or less, and we’ve lost all of them, tells me that we’ve been unlucky. Particularly when you factor in the Brown injury for the last two games, the actual quality of this team is probably that of a 7-2 conference team, not a 5-4 one. That offers little consolation now, but if we reel off a “surprising” streak to end the season, it won’t really be that surprising.

  23. elvislives 02/02/2013 at 6:17 PM #

I feel like that is a solid statistical way to look at things, xphoenix87. I think we can both agree that State has been unlucky.

But at some point, you make your own luck by learning from mistakes, executing plays and out-thinking your opponent. Larangara did that today for Miami, I guess they were luckier.

  24. Wufpacker 02/02/2013 at 6:18 PM #

@xphoenix87, with all due respect, we’re not talking about flukes here that you describe.

And no, if the heave goes in it doesn’t make us a better team. But if we defend and box out and pull down that rebound, or the one against Maryland? Yeah, I’d say that makes us a better team.

At some point, it’s the trend that becomes telling. We’re awfully close to that point, if not past it, IMHO.

Doesn’t mean we can’t reverse it though.

  25. Tuffy2 02/02/2013 at 6:19 PM #

There is a difference between being unlucky and not knowing how to finish.
