O’Brien plays for overtime, risks losing his job

I’m not even going to complain about the two different holding calls on the return that would’ve negated the run.

We deserve to lose when we called such an AWFUL game after getting up ten points in the second half.

Speaking of the players, it will be interesting to see how they respond. When TOB decided to play for OT, that signaled to me he didn’t trust them to get the job done. BTW, is anyone surprised by his clock management? Folks he is what he is – we’ve seen this too many times.

No point in arguing whether we need a new coach unless you are happy with a very mediocre program. Most people can pretty clearly see what we have with this coach and staff. All the mystery is gone except who will be on the sidelines next year. I don’t think DY is playing not to lose.

Outside of the first 4 min + last 1:30 – we win 35-18. Those 5+ minuets accounted for 25 UNC points.

Lumpy: Here’s how I see it. Three of our last four games are at home. Like the man or hate him, TOB has been pretty good at home. Yes he’s laid massive eggs (like the shut out at home with a bowl on the line in year one against MD), but his real struggles have been on the road.

We get Clemson on the road. That’s a loss no matter how you slice it. They have more talent and will be very motivated after last year.

UVA and BC? They’re awful. Those are wins.

Wake? If the game were next week, we might lose it. It’s two weeks out and I think we’ve got enough in the tank to beat them at home. This isn’t the Riley Skinner led WF teams that would snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. This is a team that has gotten blitzed a couple of times already this year.

I’d give you that if the Clemson game were before Wake, there’d be a good chance that we’d beat Clemson and then follow it up with a loss to Wake. Given the order of the schedule though, I don’t see it happening.

  4. mak4dpak 10/27/2012 at 9:43 PM #

So we beat a FSU team that dismantles Duke 48-7, who beat UNC last week? And a sorry BC team also beat Maryland. We must have peaked in the FSU game, and all down hill from there. Typical TOB!

  5. NCSU84 10/27/2012 at 9:46 PM #

I have calmed down a bit and can now think rationally. We probably should not have won the MD game and should not have lost this one. In the end, it probably balances out. THIS loss hurts so much because of who the opponent was and how we loss. But in the scheme of things, we are probably right where we should be. And yes, we may end up 8-4. But I remember the Reed/Kiffin days of 2-10, 3-9, 4-8 type seasons which were no fun at all. Given his wininng records and the scandal at UNC (TOB has a clean record), TOB will finish his contract through 2013 then, and only then, will DY have a decision to make. All those who say otherwise are speaking based on emotion and nothing more.

What State fans were there should have stormed the field European Soccer style and beat the shit out of the Wolfpack coaches. They have turned a 10 win team into a 6 or 7 win team.

  7. coach13 10/27/2012 at 10:07 PM #

I want to know what the local media is saying. State fans are not over reacting. This was horses4it. Inexplicable horses4it.

Tom O’Brien is 38-33 in his NC State career after today’s loss. He’s 20-24 in conference play and he’s 30-33 against FBS opponents (yes that includes this year’s matchup against South Alabama). He has a LOSING record against FBS teams. That is pathetic. Now that he’s lost to Carolina, I see no reason whatsoever to keep him on as the head coach (particularly because he lost this game not the players but all of you are well aware of that). It’s about time we start a couple of new threads: one titled ‘Fire Tom O’Brien’ and the other titled ‘Coaching Candidates to replace Tom O’Brien’

  9. ahgrady 10/27/2012 at 10:09 PM #

You people are the most negative fans I’ve ever heard of. Say we tried to throw the ball and it got tipped up for a pick and they won. Y’all would be saying the same thing. It’s ok to be pissed, you should be we lost to Carolina. But give it up with how Tom obrien is such a terrible coach. He is actually a great coach. He’s not a great recruiter but as xs and O’s go he is one Of the best. At some point players have to execute which they didn’t. So don’t go around talking about how he is such a bad coach. Also they dropped atleast 7 balls which would hav kept our drives going.

Tuffy2: Sorry, but I call ’em how I see ’em. When the teams weren’t scoring it was only because the offenses were mis-firing. It wasn’t really much to do with the defenses.

Let’s put it this way. Both teams had 500+ yards. UNC averaged 7.7 yards per throw and 5.4 yards per carry. We averaged 9 yards per throw. Both teams averaged 6.6 yards per play!

Honestly, the only defense that was arguably played was by UNC against us on the ground or by NC State on 3rd down. Yes, we were sacked 5 times for 27 yards, but even without that we didn’t break 100 on the ground. More importantly in our 31 attempts, we only had 2.2 ypc. We held UNC to 25% conversions on 3rd down.

The point remains the same. That’s not a game you try and hold the ball and run out the clock, or one that you give possession back to the other team. You’ve got to keep the foot on the gas.

  11. Lumpy 10/27/2012 at 10:11 PM #

    Ryebread,
You are correct about Clemson. They are probably remembering last year, and other than a fluke shank by the MD kicker, TOB cannot win on the road in division. But…. I will bet the farm that with 3 other games against inferior talent we drop one of those. I don’t care what his home record is (And it is good), one of those teams will play up to our level, and we will play down to theirs. Mark it down.

  12. mak4dpak 10/27/2012 at 10:19 PM #

We should have worn our white pants, that is why we lost. Don’t wanna see that combination again, too many bad memories.

  13. SaccoV 10/27/2012 at 10:20 PM #

We should change our nickname to the Rationalizers!

This is pathetic. The real tipping point of my animosity is that this is the FOURTH GAME THIS SEASON that our team was in a one possession lead/trail situation at game’s end and in TWO of those games were terrible losses and the MD game should have been three but the kicker shanked one. How is it that you want to teach your team toughness and a military-style mentality, but when the chips are down, our defense (and now special teams) allows a huge play to lose the game?

And for everyone out there who’s “well, this is what you get with TOB?” — this is the same bullshit that lead to a national outcry for our dislike of HWSNBN. I don’t give a damn if he wins 8 games or 9 games or 10 games. If you have an opportunity to win a fucking ballgame, find a way to win it. You won’t win them all, but you sure as hell won’t win them running out the last minute of 2nd half after your QB has thrown for 5 TDs on plays over 30 yds!

Give credit to The Hat … when he has an opportunity to win, he’s going to take it. I hope he stays at UN* for a while, because he’s going to win some games and make them into a legitimate top-25 caliber team. I certainly do not ever see us as that under our current coach. If TOB isn’t fired/removed/retired at the end of this
year, I for one won’t be watching NC State football next year. Given how this year has played out, this team should be undefeated, not waiting around for Clemson to shit the bed in order to get to the championship game.

Odd thing? In the ACC we’ve lost both games we should’ve won… and won both games we should’ve lost. We should be 2-2… but every single game has gone the opposite direction from what should’ve happened.

Regardless, 2-2 in this ACC is justification for a firing.

  15. timberwolf 10/27/2012 at 10:40 PM #

Just got back from Cheater Hill. Decided to take abuse from our non-rivals and eat along Franklin street. I have not read spew above. TOB took his foot off the gas. Bad call in hindsight. Bad ACC in general.

  16. JSRy2k 10/27/2012 at 10:45 PM #

This is funny – or not:
I’m in Ohio, and the friend watching with me started talking about Jim Tressel about midway through the 4th, including Tressel’s answer to a question regarding the most important play in the game of football, to which he responded, “The punt.”

  17. PittsburghPackFan 10/27/2012 at 11:33 PM #

    Ow, that one hurt…

Put me in with the group that thinks we ride out TOB’s contract thru next year… Not such a bad thing.

Don’t forget, even Sheridan lost ONCE to UNX.

    ONCE

  18. Pack Mentality 10/27/2012 at 11:38 PM #

We have not been favored in a single ACC game up to this point. That in and of itself says something about the state of our program.

Dropped passes killed us. The playcalling at the end then gave Carolina a chance to win, which they took full advantage of. Both of these factors are why we lost. Take either one of them away and we had a good chance of winning.

  19. OldWuf 10/28/2012 at 12:10 AM #

Disappointed. Stupid clock management and play calls. Nothing new. I like TOB’s character and ability to run a clean program.
Looking back at all the coaches that I can remember, I have only been happy with 2 of them. I barely remember Bo Rein but he did when the ACC. Dick Sheridan was incredible. We weren’t big time but he was a great leader and his teams were fun to watch. He also seemed great because Kiffin and Tom Reed were so bad. O’Cain was a great guy and well respected but couldn’t get it done-I think were his 1st HC job. As others have said, getting a coach to move us to the next level is a tricky proposition. Unlike our morally corrupt neighbors in chapel hole, our alumni and fans will not stand for the shenanigans that have gone on there. I see TOB finishing his tour next year and DY will locate a good one for us. As others have said, next year don’t look too good.

The student-athlete for UNCheat, what’s his name, Highsmith? The guy who plagiarized an 11 year old kid….made a play or two today. They zeroed in on him after a big play yucking it up with his other student-athletes….perhaps speaking Swahili to one another…..I’m just wondering how the smurf fan base feels deep down, like when they see this cheater on the tv and they are alone with their thoughts….do they truly admit it to themselves, albeit just for a second, never to burn through a synapse forever again…but at least for that one instant….some shame, fleeting, but real? …….naw, not those a-holes. Too f-ing arrogant. Ingrained, imbedded, etched in stone, blind arrogance. Go to hell, Carolina! You cheat. You can’t play straight up. Your pride is false. We know you.

  21. Tuffy2 10/28/2012 at 12:26 AM #

ryebread- Let me say stats only mean something to me when a coaching staff utilizes the talent he has and also comes up with a game plan of calling rushing and passing plays when least expected by the other teams defense. At that point you can show me numbers. There were players that needed to be in the game more and some that needed much more of a rest. Maybe those numbers change and maybe they don’t but at least always keep them guessing.

  22. SaccoV 10/28/2012 at 1:21 AM #

This is the third time in conference play where the team had the lead late in the game on the road. We’re 1 and 2 in those games. My wife who gladly accepted my apology for swearing in front my two toddler boys also quipped “It wasn’t your fault. The team blew it.” DY needs to offer whatever it takes to get Strong or Franklin or even Cutcliffe if they are available and she needs to do it at season’s end. Winning 8 or 9 games isn’t a worthy statistic in my view because the quality of those wins is by definition meaningless.

And for the ‘He’ll get you 8 wins and a decent bowl’ Rationalists … keep this in mind. TOB’s record at BC in his first six years was 40-29. His record at State in his first (and hopefully only) 6 years is 38-33. Amato was 49-37 in his 7 years. O’Cain was 41-40 in 7 years. What we’ve got with TOB is the same as what we’ve had, which at the end of the season is NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

TOB’s original contract went thrust 2013. The prior AD gave him a two year extension. I used to think it only went to 20213 until someone posted the extension in response to a 2013 post I made.

  25. TLeo 10/28/2012 at 8:14 AM #

In this day and age how the hell can you not teach a punter to “directional kick”? I didn’t hear this next comment but on the forums he reportedly said “the wind blew it too far”. WTF??? Is that a way of saying he out kicked the coverage? That does happen but to not be able to try and kick away from GB and possibly keep them backed up is just ridiculous. No more excuses TOB, it’s time to go — one way or another.
