O’Brien plays for overtime, risks losing his job

I’m not even going to complain about the two different holding calls on the return that would’ve negated the run.

We deserve to lose when we called such an AWFUL game after getting up ten points in the second half.

The only way TOB gets booted out by this foot is if we have someone extraordinary to take his place…I like his attitude, work ethic, and the way he has control of the team…plus, we are 5-1 against Ewe NC in the last six years…I’ll take than any day…it’s the losses to the 1-5 Boston College’s or Wake Forest’s that get to me…this is a rivalry game and sometimes the best team does not always win….we did give them this game and should have been in the driver’s seat for the conference championship game, but it did not happen because we played scared to lose in the 4th quarter….Maybe he can take a couple of coaching classes this summer and maybe turn out to be a GREAT caoch!

    No guts, no glory.
    No falls, no balls.

O’Brien’s conservative approach really bit him in the ass today. Why one would give the ball back to a team that clearly has the momentum, the home crowd and oh, yeah, perhaps one of the top 3 return men in the country standing back and waiting for your punt is mystifying to me in hindsight.

Maybe he didn’t want to risk a turnover deep in his team’s own territory. Maybe he didn’t have faith in a QB who threw five touchdowns on the day. Or maybe he just was playing not to lose.

Well, he did lose and I for one completely get BC fans from several years ago.

Glennon, you will be great in the NFL, they don’t let the ball bounce off their chest.

Ok folks…time to write a bad country song to go with the crap we will have to endure for another year. I will write the first verse, so everyone else feel free to add at will:

    Sitting here in Atlantic Beach,
    The storm is poundin’ the surf;
Tryin’ to drink up all my beer,
‘Cause we just lost to the smurfs.

I don’t mind losing if we play well. We were CLEARLY the better team today. We could score at will against UNX. They sucked. So we get a 10 point lead and what do we do? We start playing conservative. That leads to a missed field goal. They we play conservative defense, and UNX scores. When we really needed to stop them, we do it holding them to 3. Then we don’t even try to score on the last drive when all we need is our stellar kicker that can make a field goal from 60 yards to kick one through.
W T F???????????????????????????????????? I am IRATE IRATE IRATE about what I just saw. Glennon, Sade, Palmer, Wolf, and several others played their asses off only to have the coaching staff hand it to UNX on a platter. I have been mad about losing before but UNX sucks, we had them easily beaten, and we give them a win. I don’t think I have ever been this mad. What a way to WASTE a Saturday afternoon. UNX fans, half of whom left when it was 35-25, should feel lucky that we gave them this win. I can’t put into words how mad I really am about this game. IT WAS BS TO THE HIGHEST EXTREME LEVEL. I have been a TOB fan but this was incompetent football coaching, including failure to play for a win, the usual horrible clock management, and stupid play calling. If a firing is not in order, then a strong reprimand certainly should be forthcoming. TOTAL TOTAL BULL _ _ _ _!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have decided to not comment while this angry, etc.

Need some time before I embarrass myself, my family, and the alleged fact that I’m supposed to an adult, by going off here.

Hope it doesn’t take more than a day or so, but considering how I feel at the moment, it might be February before I see you folks again, so have a great Xmas if I can’t get my chit together.

    *sigh*

  7. Ed89 10/27/2012 at 4:56 PM #

^^^TOB admitted he had never coached Baumkann on how to kick directionally and didn’t want to risk a shank.

You cannot be serious, are you? A college punter doesn’t practice directional kicking in practice EVERY DAY? You mean he just goes out every day in practice and punts it as far as he can? Or practices the short ones inside the 20? Geez, unreal.

  8. packalum44 10/27/2012 at 4:56 PM #

I know the mods don’t make bold spleculative proclamations. With that said, I find it hard to imagine O’Brien loses his job if he finishes with 4 losses. We should only lose one more game. Plus we will probably beat a crappy big east team in a crappy bowl to pad the win column.

    Lose 5 and see ya’.

  9. MrPlywood 10/27/2012 at 4:57 PM #

re: punting “directionally”… uh, don’t you just sort of aim the way you want it to go?

  10. packalum44 10/27/2012 at 4:58 PM #

Guys this is the first time since the 70s that we can say, “wait till basketball season!”. It’s not so badddsddddd.

  11. Alpha Wolf 10/27/2012 at 5:00 PM #

I don’t know the mind of Debbie Yow, but I know she ain’t happy with what she saw the last five minutes of that ballgame. Whether that makes her want to upgrade the coaching position is beyond me, but she’s got to know that we’ve set up UNC to further establish in-state recruiting domination.

Who knows what will happen, but even up ten I had a bad feeling.

One thing is for sure, I dread going to work, but my take on it is this: I dished it out for several years, now I have to take it. I can’t say UNC didn’t deserve to win, because they did — they made the plays when it mattered and we dilly-dallied and gave them enough of a chance to win. And we know what they did with that chance.

Oh well, this beer is good.

  12. Packster 10/27/2012 at 5:00 PM #

Also….there was at least one clear block in the back on that punt return. I do not want to use the officials for any kind of excuse in this game but I just want it to be known that Ron Cherry sucks. I have been watching his incompetent officiating for years and I am sick of that too. Is there anything I forgot to say?

  13. wolfpack4ever 10/27/2012 at 5:01 PM #

Dr. Yow professed that she wanted consistent top 25 teams. Well, she witnessed today why NC State football will never get there under TOB.

Another nail in his coffin today. I jumped off of the TOB wagon a couple of years ago during/after the EZU debacle. This is worse.

1 & 1/2 minutes, 3 time outs and an gayheel defense that was not that good. What do we do? Run 3 times and punt.

Enjoy your SC beach house Tom. Barring a miracle you are done. Break out the short/long list Ms. Yow. You witnessed the summary of NCSU football under this coaching staff today!

  14. wolfonthehill 10/27/2012 at 5:01 PM #

Time management at the end of the first half was equally baffling… and it’s a theme. This staff has no concept of how to manage a game and the clock. None. It’s like they just make it up as they go along, one play at a time.

Time to move on. We’re fortunate to be anything but 0-4 in this weak-ass league…

  15. blpack 10/27/2012 at 5:03 PM #

Everyone is mad, as am I. Go walk around in the TS about 30 minutes and that will help. I do think this eventually gets vacated, but either way we lost it. I feel like they didn’t win it. Should have never come down to that. We dropped too many passes, an INT and had too many mistakes. All correctable, but all on us. We are good, but that is all we are. Very good-to-great teams win the Atlantic Division. We are not there. Fortunately we get UVa on Saturday and can get this bad taste out of my mouth.

  16. NCSU2WFU 10/27/2012 at 5:09 PM #

Ditto to basically everything above… The worst part about watching it live (besides being stuck in the parking deck for over an hour on the way out), is the sense of watching a bad horror movie at the end where you see what’s coming and can’t stop it… 3 time outs and we decide to run, run and punt? Even if they didn’t have the run back, giving up and punting so deep in our own territory, there was a good chance they would’ve made it into field goal range anyway. Despite the drops we still had a chance to win but stopped playing to win and gave the game away. Just depressing

Might as well get rid of him now because next year will be a disaster

  18. bTHEredterror 10/27/2012 at 5:12 PM #

“Well, he did lose and I for one completely get BC fans from several years ago.”

I’ve begun to as well. The Baumann thing is a prime example. So….what, this scenario never crossed your mind?

One of the sports radio guys in Charlotte made a dead-on statement a couple of weeks ago. He said TOB is a poor man’s Mark Richt. He wins enough games to be almost unfireable, but will consistently break your heart right when you think he has turned the corner.

  19. doug 10/27/2012 at 5:13 PM #

I am a PROUD pack fan. I do understand the attacks on play calling but why none on the sorry ass replay official. That was not a fumble. By the way we will now beat Clemson.
A word of caution from TN. The volunteers got rid of Fulmer, where are they now? Just becareful what we wish for it is a process as I said before. I have begged for six wins just so we could play in a Bowl. We are now a contender.
Why does a player still play who used 11 year olds to write a paper? Just venting sorry.

Totally predictable loss—as I have said over and over–TOB is a horrible excuse for a Division one team. He can’t recruit, can’t prepare his team,BORING, always loses the games he should win, totally predictable play calling but a good con artist. If he wasn’t a good con artist he would have been fired 3 years ago. I am tired of hearing how he does all the right things—BUT HE IS A LOSER. FIRE HIM NOW.

  22. bTHEredterror 10/27/2012 at 5:15 PM #

    “That was not a fumble.”

Uhh, yes it was. Remember the Clint Stoerner play Arkansas versus Tenn a few years ago? It happened to Johnny Manziel last week too. You are not down through the football, and therefore the ground hasn’t caused the fumble. He lost it before it hit the ground anyway.

  23. ncst8zr1 10/27/2012 at 5:16 PM #

What a dumbass chicken sh*t shameful way to lose a football game. Good move, coach, take it out of your team’s hands and let the other team take a run at it. Of course one can cite a number of reasons we did not win, there always are multiple reasons. But the fact is that sometimes a win or loss, no matter what happened earlier in the game, comes down to making the right call at the end of the game. So we want to pass up the opportunity to win it in regulation and go to overtime on THEIR field with the way they have just moved the football? I have grown very tired of TOB and his crew and hope that my school finds a way to ensure his nonreturn for another year of mediocrity.

  24. graywolf 10/27/2012 at 5:16 PM #

^Doug…..thus far Dr. Yow has done a GREAT job at hiring the right people for the job…..I put a lot of faith in her abilities to find the right fit for NC State.

That’s what he said Ed89. I was flabberghasted and thought maybe I’d heard wrong, what with my fury at the way it ended. But Tony Haynes repeated it later.
