How Do You Spell Ugly?

I dunno…but I definitely just saw it.

That said, I will very gladly take the win. Looking at the big picture, we played poorly two weeks in a row. On the road, against credible D-1 opponents. To emerge from that 1-1 is a very positive outcome.

That said again…NC State has tons of work to do if it wants to compete even in the ACC Atlantic Division this year. Clemson and Florida State would destroy last weekend’s Wolfpack – or today’s. The comic ineptitude of the rest of the schedule almost ensures a bowl bid…but this season needs to be about more than that. If not now, when? And we will be forced to ponder that awful “when?” line of questioning unless NC State gets a lot better by October 6.

Get better, Earl Wolff. We would be 0-2 without you.

Settle down, Mike Glennon. Even factoring in the inconsistent OL play, you get no better than a C-minus so far in your senior campaign.

One last word – I still think it was smart to stay conservative on offense down the stretch. I think we were much more likely to shoot ourselves in the foot (especially against the wind) than deliver the kill shot. I certainly don’t like having to play that way, and we can’t get away with such down the road.

Disagreeing with the criticism wasn’t my point OldMac, but I know you know that.

There is quite a bit more football intelligence on this side of the site.

Well done peeps. Old Mac’s take was a particularly good one, I thought. 45-41 would have have jazzed a bunch of people.
I know why, but surely wouldn’t get it.

    We did create some turnovers.

The game may have been ugly, but it is a beautiful day when we win and the cheater “holes” lose. So much for them winning the “championship” of OUR STATE!

  5. Wulfpack 09/08/2012 at 7:45 PM #

Supposed to be the year TOB could put a team together at State to compete with the big boys. Not looking like that will happen.

wolfpride, when have we had a 10-win season under O’Brien? If you think that’s going to happen playing the way we’ve played so far this year, your dilusional. And being satisfied with a 10-point win aganist Uconn is lame. Just because I voice my disdain for TOB and Bible ball, doesn’t mean I’m not a real fan either. That’s such a ridiculous accusation anyway. Anyone that spends time at this site is certainly a “real fan”.

Did not get to see game or listen on radio. All I cared about was finding a score. State won, unx lost. “all is right with the world”.

I’m relieved as much as anything. So much to work on. The OL really troubles me. Hopefulle they can figure it out. Two gimmees coming up and then the U awaits.

I’m happy we won no matter what. I am not bitching or whining for the heck of it but we looked ugly. We look ugly ever da#% year until game 5 or 6. There is NOTHING wrong with constructive criticism. I am happy to say it….Why the #%% does it take this many games every year to figure things out. We do have plenty of time to prep for games so why every years with this junk? I like TOB and the clean program. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like a better clean program!

We need some fire somewhere. We look a step behind From the start every year. We don’t expect miracles but do expect a certain level of excitement. The only excitement seems to be the following year…..the players are working hard and I am sure the staff is. However, there is an obvious issue with Chemistry until the main ACC play starts every year! Why is all I am asking?

Conn held Mass to 3 total rushing yards last week…there were a lot of penalties.

Hey, we won on the road against a BCS team. Sure, it was an ugly game, but it was a win. With the way TOB’s teams tend to start out slow and then improve as the season goes along, we should be happy to be 1-1 at this point.

  12. 61Packer 09/08/2012 at 9:18 PM #

I’m convinced more than ever after watching today’s game that this coaching staff is never going to take Wolfpack football to the next level. As long as we continue to eat cupcakes most of September, we’ll get the W’s, but UNC found out today just how much that 62-0 win last weekend helped them.

We’re not nearly as bad off as basketball was under Herb Sendek and especially under Sidney Lowe, but we’re not going to end up in many nice bowls if this staff stays another 10 years.

If you’re happy with beating up on small directional schools and topping out at 8-4, but without seriously contending for the championship of what has become a woeful football conference, then keep on singing praises and hoping for that long-awaited breakthrough next season.

But hey, the tailgates are great!

Really glad I was traveling across the country today and didn’t watch. I predicted more of the same with this team preseason and look to be right.

Really a shame TOB fielded better teams at BC then at State. Noone here guessed that when he was hired. We figured he could recruit better talent here but he has failed miserably despite institutional advantages.

Wonder if we could cough up enough dough for Bobby Petrino. Would help our SEC case to boot.

after seeing the tennessee game last week i totally expected the big letdown on the road this week. checked the score at work and saw we had a 3-0 lead at the half. i’m okay with that. obviously i didn’t have to suffer watching it. isn’t uconn a fairly solid defensive team, i didn’t expect much from a points perspective…especially as spotty as it was last week.

i agree with the person above, i don’t get why we start so slow but i think TOB has the team prepared by the time the bowl game rolls around better than any of our past coaches in twenty years. sherridan was my favorite coach in my lifetime.. chuck was my favorite as far as emotion is concerned but TOB impresses me when our post season rolls around.

i think this team is the best he’s fielded, it’s just a shame RW wasn’t in the mix last year. i’ve tempered my expectations for the season but i know we improve every week. i don’t think we’ll survive the conf play w/out a loss but i think we’re still in contention to win it this year! let’s not sell this veteran staff short just yet.

i’m glad glennon took a beating today. he needs to wake that ass up! he’s playing like a freshmen and he’s better than that ( i hope). he’s certainly no matty ryan so far.

^^^^^^, this was supposed to be the year for me… and alot of other fans… but not all i see. letting RW go and priming MG last year for this year. you know, for the big SEC matchup. it turns out that it wasn’t any different than our usc contests.

hopefully we come out of this next stretch with a little mo and beat the canes. they didn’t fare to well today. and the deacs, hi fives for you! go PACK

  15. ryebread 09/08/2012 at 9:51 PM #

61Packer: Agreed. TOB is going to be an 8-4 +/- 1 win coach from here on out. Now, given the history of NC State football, that means a lifetime contract (particularly if one of those wins every year is against UNC).

I watched today’s game. Quick thoughts:
    – Defenses were way better than offenses for both teams. It was what you’d expect a game 1 to look like.
    – UConn brought extra guys pretty much on every play.
    – Our defense played pretty darn well. Amerson and the secondary really bounced back from week 1.
    – Glennon is kind of struggling.
    – I’ll take a road win against a BCS team any day of the week.

Looking at the schedule, I still see 8-4. FSU and Clemson will trounce us. We’ll have one other loss (probably to Wake or UNC).

  16. choppack1 09/08/2012 at 11:08 PM #

Wulfpacker- we competed with the big boys 2 years ago. Last year, we beat the acc champs.

We return zero starting linebackers…in a scheme that relies even more heavily than most on that position. Watch football…you’ll see ilk ulm beating Arkansas…you’ll see usc being caught up in a dogfight against Syracuse (whom uconn blew out last year ).

And don’t count on anything…hell, you should know better you’re a state fan

  17. VaWolf82 09/08/2012 at 11:14 PM #

Supposed to be the year TOB could put a team together at State to compete with the big boys.

    Why would anyone have thought that? {/rhetorical question}

The only people that thought that were the usual pre-season delusionals and lazy media pundits. Anyone that expected great things without seeing how the entirely new LB and WR corps performed were jumping the gun. And that doesn’t even include the exact same OL that was sub-par last year.

packalum44 says “Wonder if we could cough up enough dough for Bobby Petrino. Would help our SEC case to boot.”

Really??? Really???? If you guys want to provide “constructive criticism” of TOB and staff then be my guess although I am quite sure they are not going to listen to it and they probably know quite a lot more about coaching and winning football games. You also put so much effort to analyzing the games. They won and look at who lost and the fact that on any given day a top college team can go down to a low/unranked team thought to have no chance of winning.

However can you seriously consider a person of Petrino’s character when thinking of replacements for a person of TOB’s character?

unfortunately in college football a win isn’t just a win, style points count. if you think you can deny that just remember back to that season OU rattled off the three 60 pt wins to make an undeserved championship game. that said, I’m happy to escape an ugly game with a win. these were games we lost not too long ago. as for criticism can we get our o-line going. I was under the impression that this was gonna be one of our strengths this year. on the bright side, the d does appear to be playing well given the giant hole our offense continues to put them in.

State wins and the cheaters lose to Wake…..its a good weekend.

  21. jrsr 09/09/2012 at 7:18 AM #

We were at the game. Not sure if the TV or radio announcers were talking about the weather but it was VERY windy on the field. Throwing a pass over 5-10 yards yesterday was just luck (like our touchdown). Not a very exciting game to watch after all of the travel but it is a win. UCONN is a solid team and our defence played great yesterday.
TOB is a very good coach and is leading a good program in a state with very difficult recruting with all of the good schools in the area.

good news out of saturday night as I sat in the rain watching Wake Forest I realized UNC will not win three ACC games this year. Even though it was Elon, I thought the Holes may have an offense, nope. This uninspired Pack team will continue the W’s against the holes.

  23. GAWolf 09/09/2012 at 7:52 AM #

The greatest 2 fictions from week 1:

1)UNC is great and “back” after beating up on the neighborhood weakling at home
2)we were terrible after getting beat on a neutral field by a team that regularly takes some of State’s best recruits.

  24. WolfInVolCountry 09/09/2012 at 8:26 AM #

    Ok, my take..

Offense gets a “C”. OL line cannot protect but did open up some hole and Moose should be seeing a lot more time. UConn’s D was stout! Add in the wind and the score should not be surprising. BTW once Bible/Glennon started going underneath the deep coverage, we were much better.

Defense gets an “A”. Amerson somewhat redeemed himself. Good pressure and good run stopping. Gave up one drive late when they had been on the field much of the game.

Special teams get a “B+”. Our punting game was great in bad conditions. Other kicking aspects did not get a chance.

So… it was a decent win against a decent foe. Still work to do.

BTW, watching these games on ESPN3 bites. Only plus is toggling back and forth between the feed and SFN game thread and reading BJD’s “bed shitting” comments.

For BJD… Go Broncos! Beat those Aholes from Pittsburgh.

What about getting Steve Spurrier, you know, the old ball coach?
