DeShawn Painter Transferring

CBS reported earlier that Jaqawn Raymond will transfer. Now The Wolfpacker is reporting, via Twitter, that DeShawn Painter will also transfer.

@TheWolfpacker:

Junior center DeShawn Painter is leaving NC State due to illness in his family. Old Dominion is a possibility.

We wish Painter and his family the best wherever he ends up.

Sounds like the newcomers might be called upon even a little more quickly than already thought. So much for developing some depth.

Wish Painter the best wherever he lands.

I absolutely loved Pringles, and he gave us a dimension (confident mid-range jump shooting) that we don’t have elsewhere. I hope everything works out for his family, and will cheer like hell for him wherever he lands.

It’s certainly all fairly explained…but I don’t like the idea of a mass exodus. Never a good thing. And it certainly does put lots of pressure on at least signing the juco kid. People can reasonably debate whether DeThaey and Vandy can play at this level – but I don’t think anyone really believes it’s ok if we HAVE to play them.

Shabazz Muhammad commits to UCLA. That’s good news, at least he isn’t going to Duke…

Hate loosing these quality kids from our program. And Painter has developed nicely into a real contributor off the bench. Replacing his experience and 12-foot jumper will not be easy.

Having said all that, these openings give us the potential to offer those precious minutes to talents like Amile and Young. If (and that’s a big IF) we can land BOTH kids, then we will have improved our position considerably – especially if Leslie returns. But if we miss on both kids, AND leslie leaves, next year suddenly looks dicey!!

I’ll breath easier if I read on Sunday night that Andrew Young has announced he’s joing the Pack. That will take the pressure off. Still need Amile too however.

Geez – these next 2-3 weeks are going to be pins and needles. I just want know!!!!

Dammit this is a huge blow. Not only was DeShawn a great contributor but he also possessed a great attitude and work ethic. He would’ve been a great glue guy and senior leader this coming season. Dammit dammit dammit.

Thanks for everything DeShawn. I hope everything turns out well for your family.

Sad story, hope the family and friends involved get uplifting news to come. Best wishes and we will all miss Paint.

As a no nothing fan I’m really not liking the mojo loss these days passing the Kansas loss. We are losing too much glue with CJW, Alex, and now Deshawn. Expectations are going through the roof and its the glue guys keep the continuity and team first drive at the forefront. Good luck Gott..that’s bout all I can say bout that

    Dominoes, gentlemen.

Enjoy the renewal of the roster to come.

I loved Deshawn’s game last season and loved his demeanor too. He is the x-factor kind of guy that every successful team needs. He was very, very valuable to our team. Not saying somebody else won’t step up but this is a big loss for now. God bless you and your family with what ever is going on Paint.

Is there any chance that Painter graduates before he transfers?

Honestly, Painter was my favorite kid on this past year’s team (and I felt that we had many likable players and pretty much no knuckleheads).

    Specifically I liked:
    1) His hustle. He fought HARD for rebounds, lose balls and on defense.
    2) His obvious hard work in the offseasons. He’d transformed his body two different times since a freshman. The Painter of his sophomore season was really bulked up (which is what the staff appeared to want). The Painter of his junior year came in pretty ripped. He also developed a legitimate jump shot (he had nothing of the sort his freshman year) and an ability to feel comfortable outside of 5 feet from the basket.
    3) His attitude. Painter was always smiling.
    4) His jump shot. A big man who can hit the 12-18 footer is a rarity in college basketball. It creates considerable match up problems.
    5) His ability in the clutch. The kid saved us against Princeton. He also was one of the guys whom I felt confident in when we needed to make CLUTCH free throws. A lot of our team could make them in the middle of the game, but he seemed like only one of a couple who’d make them down in the end.
    6) His academics. He seemingly took the classroom seriously.

I’m not close to the program. I don’t know what happens on a day to day basis. From the outside though, Painter personifies everything that you’d want from a college athlete.

If he does decide to transfer (and I really hope that is not the case), then I’m really sorry to see him go. I wish him the absolute best in everything that is ahead of him in life. We’re really going to miss him.

Echo everything said above. Great attitude, hustle and he really improved his game last year. Maybe we’ll see him back if things work out. Regardless, best of luck DeShawn and thanks for all your effort.

I really hate to lose Painter, but wish him the best. He has played many a minute for the Pack. I wish the best for his family also. Good luck DeShawn

Good luck Painter. Good guy all the way around.
I sure hope Harris stays….I was afraid of that since he didn’t get hardly any playing time this year.

I’ll certainly miss his baseline jumpers, but even more his ever present smile!

That is an outstanding post, ryebread.

While I expect our basketball program to move on and be successful without him, I expect he will be missed by everyone involved with the program. I will miss him. I hope the transfer works out well for him, both on a personal level and basketball-wise.
