A review of the major allegations against UNC:

1) Tutorgate/Academic “Prong” – A tutor was writing papers for athletes.

2) Tutorgate/Financial “Prong” – A tutor was giving money to athletes.

3) Tutorgate/Cover-Up “Prong” – When asked about tutorgate, individuals affiliated with the university didn’t cooperate with investigators.

4) Gary, Blake, and Santa Claus – Athletes received a total of over $27,000 from various sources.

5) @AnchormanAustin – Boy dun f***ed up.

6) Black Santa Employement – UNC had someone acting as an agent on staff.

7) Black Santa’s Finances – Blake failed to report any and all monies transferred between him and Pro Tect (agent firm) to the NCAA.

8) Black Santa Cover-Up – Similar to allegation #3, UNC wasn’t forthcoming about Blake.

9) Pseudo-Loss of Institutional Control – UNC is accused of ‘Failure to Monitor’.

More to come…

Current Penalties (Self-Imposed):

From previous article on UNC’s NOA response…

UNC will vacate wins from the 2008 and 2009 seasons for fielding ineligible players.  They will also institute a 2-year probation and a reduction of 3 scholarships for the next three years.  In the words of our very own ‘theCOWDOG’, “I’m convinced that the NCAA response is gonna sound something like this: OK, I’ll see your 9 over 3 and raise ya 12.”

Timing would suggest the NCAA is going to make a statement, I do not think this is just going to be a slap on the wrist. With so much of the world tuned in to college sports this week due to the NCAA Tournament. NCAA has to know their ruling is going to get lots of press and lots of people are going to see how they handled this. I hope UNC’s arrogance, constant appeals, not supporting the NCAA attorneys in court, publicly questioning their rulings, etc. is going to bite them hard!

I predict penalties that aren’t really penalties… like a 50% reduction of dorm beds for UNC football, resulting in players sharing single beds…you know – stuff that is already happening….

Gene, I could not agree with you more! Where is the equivalent of the Poole Commission?

“Swofford should’ve stepped up and demanded accountability.”

Ummmmm, that would mean Swofford himself would have to be accountable and we all know the answer to that one.

CowDog: You’re right about my prediction being pretty close to the USC treatment. It in my mind felt like a slap of the wrist then, and it’d feel like a slap of the wrist for UNC.

UNC has academic issues, money issues, compliance issues, repeat offender problems, and failure to be forthcoming with the NCAA. When it’s all said and done, I think there’s as much here as with USC.

Heck, I think both of them should have gotten the SMU treatment. I guess the difference is that they weren’t on probation when this round happened.

Agree that timing of decision looks precarious. Think NCAA conducts an underground Iranian nuke test on Heels. This way media stays fascinated with BBall but school AD departments nation wide get a real eye opener. The Hat is going to be so thankful his agent got him a half generation garaunted contract.

I could see it going either way. I could see the NCAA saying “This is the perfect time for this since everyone will be watching and we can make a statement”. I can also see the NCAA thinking, “If we released UNC’s penalties now, then basketball will be on everyone’s mind and we can cover this up.”

  8. TLeo 03/12/2012 at 1:33 PM #

They certainly deserve to be hammered and if the NCAA has any integrity they will be, but I just don’t expect it to happen. They constantly get away with so much it’s mind boggling.

The penalties in this case include:

    * Public reprimand and censure.
    * Three years of probation from March 12, 2012, through March 11, 2015.
    * Three-year show-cause penalty for the former assistant football coach prohibiting any recruiting activity.
    * Postseason ban for the 2012 football season.
    * Reduction of football scholarships by a total of 15 during three academic years.
    * Vacation of wins during the 2008 and 2009 seasons (self-imposed by the university).
    * $50,000 fine (self-imposed by the university).
    * Disassociation of both the former tutor and former student-athlete who served as an agent runner (self-imposed by the university).

Bowl ban will not effect recruiting. Thanks for waiting to announce until after signing day, NCAA.

  11. TopTenPack 03/12/2012 at 2:17 PM #

Just one year ban! Total crap.

  12. bill.onthebeach 03/12/2012 at 2:19 PM #

    thanks wtny….

    quoting link above….

“The university took decisive action after discovering the academic fraud violations and when the former assistant coach’s violations came to light. In addition, the school cooperated fully during the investigation.”

    ROFL–LMAO !!!

    …. and BMFD goes unmentioned….

  13. lupus occidit arietem 03/12/2012 at 2:21 PM #

    total joke.

  14. coach13 03/12/2012 at 2:33 PM #

Saying we didn’t know everytime they got caught. Saying we weren’t hiding it every time they found something. THIS constitutes full cooperation.

  15. WTNY 03/12/2012 at 2:41 PM #

While the bowl ban should have been longer and timed better, the scholarship reductions will hurt, especially by year 3.

  16. NCStatePride 03/12/2012 at 2:45 PM #

Agree with WTNY. These aren’t terrible punishments from the NCAA, but the post-season ban is virtually meaningless. IMHO, I didn’t see them going to anything significant next year anyway. New coach, new system, undisciplined players… I’m pleased with the scholly reductions, all things considered.

  17. BladenWolf 03/12/2012 at 4:53 PM #

Agreed with the bowl ban next year. Meaningless. As far as recruiting restrictions go…hell they couldn’t even beat us with the 5 star ones! They got off light.

  18. BladenWolf 03/12/2012 at 4:55 PM #

The bad publicity hopefully will continue to shed light on the Carowhina way… that may be the best thing to come out of this after all.
