NC State earns 11th seed in Midwest Region!!! [11 PM Update]

Congratulations to first year head coach, Mark Gottfriend and his NC State Wolfpack for earning an at-large berth to the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament!! Gottfried takes the Wolfpack program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season and joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as first-year coaches to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament.

NC State earned an 11th seed in the Midwest region and will play Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. If State were to win on Friday the Wolfpack would advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Belmont on Sunday.

CBS really toyed with WolfpackNation when the network waited to announce NC State as the LAST of the 68 teams in the field. (Link) In reality, the Wolfpack was not even a part of the ‘Last 4’ in the field; State was ultimately seeded No. 42 overall, ahead of Texas, California, South Florida, BYU (in order).

The selection also committee announced that Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada and Drexel were the first four for whom the bubble burst this year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference ultimately got five teams in the dance, with NC State joining rival, #1 seeded UNC-CH in the same region! Duke, Florida State, and Virginia also were included. Virginia’s 10th seed match-up with 7th seeded Florida looks to be a tough match up for the Cavs.

The intensity with which NC State fans have been sweating our position on the proverbial ‘bubble’ has increased to a fever pitch in recent days. But, if you were following SFN this afternoon you would have seen some ‘inside information’ that hit around 5:15pm that would have helped you breathe a little easier. (Link)

The Midwest region seeds are as follows: 1 UNC, 2 Kansas, 3 Georgetown, 4 Michigan, 5 Temple, 6 San Diego State, 7 St Mary’s, 8 Creighton, 9 Alabama, 10 Purdue, 11 NC State, 12 Cal/USF, 13 Ohio (coached by former NC State assistant, John Groce), 14 Belmont, 15 Detroit, 16 Lamar/Vermont.

This evening, Dick Vitale picked his sleepers as defined by 5th seeds or higher — UCONN, Memphis, Vanderbilt and NC State.

11 PM Update: Game time set.

State’s game on Friday at 12:40 will be called by Tim Brando and Mike Gminski. The game will be on TruTV.

To all of the naysayers from a year ago… GOTT Tourney?

  2. Texpack 03/11/2012 at 7:39 PM #

Any idea when game times will be announced?

  3. swamppack 03/11/2012 at 7:39 PM #

So happy, so happy. So proud of this team. Gott is the real deal. The players deserve so much encouragement for pulling together and being so classy even with the odds stacked against them.

THEY PLAYED THEIR WAY INTO THE TOURNEY. Enough said.

Check out how close Dancecard was at predicting our spot. They had us 41 and we ended 42. Thinking the only one missed was Colorado State in and Drexel out.

Talk about “house money”. This is already such a great year. Whatever happens, the future is bright for the Pack.

BJD a minor correction to your earlier comment about CBS not showing any teams live that were on the bubble – they definitely showed USF..

  7. gcpack 03/11/2012 at 7:43 PM #

A great group of teams to start with…lots of potential to get at least two wins. These teams will have a hard time preparing for us I believe….whatever I am breathing easier.

So Gottfried receives a automatic two year extension to his contract?

I’m not a lawyer, but I think yes.

Go Pack! This season has marked good progress and I am ready to see more seasons of progress!

Holy cow. That was absurd. Turns out we weren’t last 4 in after all.

Congratulations to gott, his staff, deb yow and the team. A lot of us thought that the talent was here to do it if we didn’t get hit by the injury bug.

We’ve got a tough draw but so does sdsu. I’ll he real interested to see how the guys play without the pressure they’ve had to endure the last 3 weeks.

Whoops, I guess I was so shocked NOT to see us in the last Dayton matchup that I missed the USF reaction. My mind was racing like mad.

That’s a very fair contract clause, since dancing in year 1 or 2 is an outstanding accomplishment when taking over for a fired coach. Job well done!

Very interested in the game time announcements as well. When does this info usually come out?

  12. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:52 PM #

I don’t think times come out until Monday or Tuesday. The TV folks have lots of say.

  13. Texpack 03/11/2012 at 7:52 PM #

I’m hoping the West Coast opponent gets us a night game. Hopefully the final game of the night.

  14. 61Packer 03/11/2012 at 7:53 PM #

There are 9 head coaches in the field who have won national titles as head coaches. We’re facing one of them Friday.

  15. gotohe11carolina 03/11/2012 at 7:59 PM #

slow clap for Gott and the boys

  16. Wulfpack 03/11/2012 at 7:59 PM #

Just awesome is all I have to say. I thought we were toast after Iona got in and then the last play-ins were revealed. But I kept the faith, and it all turned out alright.

Don’t know much about SDSU. But I have seen a ton of Georgetown, and they are very very good. Hey, I’m just happy to be in this thing after so many years of irrelevancy. Congrats to the team and Gott. You’ve already made us proud. Play with reckless abandon as you have not one thing to lose. You are all winners in our eyes.

  17. choppack1 03/11/2012 at 8:00 PM #

And for future reference…dance card had us at 41 or 42…ncaa overall seeding for us…42.

Dare to mock the dance card!

  18. my_adidas 03/11/2012 at 8:00 PM #

Any idea on the game time Friday?

  19. 70wolf 03/11/2012 at 8:02 PM #

Any reason that noone is asking Gott directly what the ref said to him. Although he cannot question the call, he can certainly openly say what was said to him. He and Yow owe it to the Wolfpack Nation to get that scum bag canned.

If he has been asked by the press can some one give us the link.

  20. Wulfpack 03/11/2012 at 8:04 PM #

Gott has said he did not hear what the ref supposedly said to him. He was too busy coaching.

  21. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 8:05 PM #

I guess that is why they said “may be there” in Dayton because we are NOT going to Dayton! 🙂

  22. vtpackfan 03/11/2012 at 8:08 PM #

Aztecs play 4 guys 30 minutes plus who are 6’5″ or shorter. Only one player on team stands over 6’7″ and he is a 5 th year Grad transfer from LSU. They don’t block many if any shots so this might be the best matchup wecould have hoped for.

  23. motorhead 03/11/2012 at 8:09 PM #

Still hard to believe. I think back to the crushing Clemson loss only 15 days ago. We had gone from first four out, to next four out, to not even mentioned in a few days. Yes its a good day. As Shepherd Smith said to Andrew Young – Raleigh is Wolfpack Country!

  24. GAWolf 03/11/2012 at 8:09 PM #

ESPN is picking us to be the sleeper in that side of our bracket.

  25. wufpup76 03/11/2012 at 8:12 PM #

ABSOLUTELY house money. This is just awesome, no matter what happens.

    That said, let’s win!!!

    Terrific, fantastic job.
