NC State earns 11th seed in Midwest Region!!! [11 PM Update]

Congratulations to first year head coach, Mark Gottfriend and his NC State Wolfpack for earning an at-large berth to the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament!! Gottfried takes the Wolfpack program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season and joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as first-year coaches to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament.

NC State earned an 11th seed in the Midwest region and will play Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. If State were to win on Friday the Wolfpack would advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Belmont on Sunday.

CBS really toyed with WolfpackNation when the network waited to announce NC State as the LAST of the 68 teams in the field. (Link) In reality, the Wolfpack was not even a part of the ‘Last 4’ in the field; State was ultimately seeded No. 42 overall, ahead of Texas, California, South Florida, BYU (in order).

The selection also committee announced that Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada and Drexel were the first four for whom the bubble burst this year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference ultimately got five teams in the dance, with NC State joining rival, #1 seeded UNC-CH in the same region! Duke, Florida State, and Virginia also were included. Virginia’s 10th seed match-up with 7th seeded Florida looks to be a tough match up for the Cavs.

The intensity with which NC State fans have been sweating our position on the proverbial ‘bubble’ has increased to a fever pitch in recent days. But, if you were following SFN this afternoon you would have seen some ‘inside information’ that hit around 5:15pm that would have helped you breathe a little easier. (Link)

The Midwest region seeds are as follows: 1 UNC, 2 Kansas, 3 Georgetown, 4 Michigan, 5 Temple, 6 San Diego State, 7 St Mary’s, 8 Creighton, 9 Alabama, 10 Purdue, 11 NC State, 12 Cal/USF, 13 Ohio (coached by former NC State assistant, John Groce), 14 Belmont, 15 Detroit, 16 Lamar/Vermont.

This evening, Dick Vitale picked his sleepers as defined by 5th seeds or higher — UCONN, Memphis, Vanderbilt and NC State.

11 PM Update: Game time set.

@Pack Pride‏
State’s game on Friday at 12:40 will be called by Tim Brando and Mike Gminski. The game will be on TruTV.

I was sitting there thinking, “truly the Pack cannot be screwed that bad and in that many ways in one weekend.” GO PACK!

Congrats Coach Gott, staff, team and fans. It’s been a long, tough dry spell. Great job all. Now let’s go to Columbus and survive and advance. I have not posted since the UNX game yesterday to allow myself to cool down and regain ration thoughts. After reviewing the game, we definitely let a big win slip away by:

    1. Committing 2 huge turnovers in the last minute–Johnson-Brown miscommunication and Wood’s pass intended for Painter.
    2. Wood and CJW were basically no shows offensively. Wood could not get open and could not convert the few three’s that he attempted.
    3. Free throws continue to be our Achille’s heel.

The inconsistent calls throughout the second half definitely hurt and definitely changed the game, but we cannot control that. We can contol the above deficiencies however. Carowhina has always received the benefit of the doubt on crucial calls late in games since I have been watching ACC games in the late ’60’s, so we have to be able to continue to execute and not let questionable calls divert our focus from treating every possession like gold and executing what is working for us.

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I cried s little when they called us. Even for selection Sunday we have to keep our rep as the Cardiac Pack.

  4. PackAmy 03/11/2012 at 7:15 PM #

They didn’t show us on CBS. They say our name last and don’t even show the team celebrating. Typical.

  5. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:15 PM #

CBS didn’t show a single “live” team grouping for anyone anywhere near the bubble. Very boring.

  6. STLPack01 03/11/2012 at 7:16 PM #

What did I tell y’all? We were in and no play in game! Not even close. GO PACK!!!

I’ll be attending the Sweet 16 in St. Louis to watch our beloved pack play our way into the semis.

  7. BamaPack 03/11/2012 at 7:18 PM #

You could not ask for a better draw.

  8. pyguy 03/11/2012 at 7:18 PM #

So pleased with the team and the coach. I’m a senior so this was my last chance too! Happy we made it.

BTW you have San Diego as “Sand Diego” in the 2nd paragraph. Might want to edit.

    Go state!

We are going dancing again! Congrats to Coach Gott, and the team. We may even get to play the likes of the tarholes, if we both win in this region. Would love to knock them out, but first things first. Beat SDSU. Just thought it was funny today at the game in Atlanta, to hear the Tarholes complain about the officiating. Guess they know how we felt yesterday. Good enough for em. I will say the unx fans on the Marta, heading to the game. did admit we got robbed yesterday in the game.

Only inside dope I saw was someone having State playing their first game on Thurs. or Friday.

    Dayton?

Well BJD, Columbus is closer, no ?

  12. Texpack 03/11/2012 at 7:20 PM #

When I saw Colorado as an 11 seed I thought we might avoid the play-in. Too bad Spring Break begins at the end of the week at tOSU or I’d have a place to stay. My son is on a SW flight LEAVING Columbus this Friday. Now I’m just hoping for a night game.

Best route to Columbus: I-40 to Greensboro and then I-40 Business to US52 north in downtown W-Salem. 52 north to I-74 near Mt. Airy and then I-74 to I-77. I-77 north thru Va and gas up in Wytheville or you’ll pay 30 to 50 cents more per gallon of gas when in WVA. Follow I-77 thru WV to Charleston; the toll on the WVA Turnpike will be 2 bucks at each of 3 toll booths (down with the I-95 proposed toll!).

From there, I recommend I-64 west to US35 north into Ohio via Gallipolis and continue 35 to Chillicothe. Then get on US23 north to Columbus. Have made many trips this way and have also gone I-77 to US33 north of Charleston, but 33 is a lot of 2-lane from I-77 to Columbus, and a new freeway segment of 35 gets you to Ohio faster, plus just about all of 35 in OH is 4-lane and all of 23 is 4-lane.

    Go pack.

Iona was the “last team in” and Cal is the team bumped down to Dayton by the Bonnies. State was two slots away from Dayton (Texas was closest to it).

It looks like Oral Roberts – who nobody was talking about ayt all – would have gotten the Bonnies’ bid.

  15. Texpack 03/11/2012 at 7:24 PM #

For those of you going to Columbus, Too’s on High Street is a bar co-owned by a life long friend of mine. If you need a beer go there.

I kind of feel bad for Sid, he was a horrible coach and this NCAA bid is entirely on the current coaching team, but these are his recruits. Congrats to the players and Gott anyway!!

they sure did make us sweat, huh

Kudos to Coach Gott and staff..Kudos to DY also…I’m not expecting much, but you gotta start from somewhere! Definitely an improvement over what we’ve seen for years in many respects!

  20. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:29 PM #

I would maybe drive to Columbus except for toe surgery Thursday morning (which I did time so I could vegetate watching the tourney during recovery). I do like being able to watch all of the other games, too. I will likely watch every second of the Thursday to Sunday coverage.

  21. redcanine 03/11/2012 at 7:30 PM #

Looks like Scotty’s going to have to really get after it on the defensive end

  22. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:34 PM #

Tapley is ridiculously good. I watched some of their game against New Mexico. Steve Fisher is also a damned good tournament coach. Don’t take the first game for granted.

  23. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/11/2012 at 7:35 PM #

SDState is clearly a guard oriented team. Leslie & Howell will have free reign inside but we’ll struggle with covering the 3.

  24. Texpack 03/11/2012 at 7:37 PM #

With the FT % of their bigs, TDT should get some hack time.

  25. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:37 PM #

The Aztecs are very athletic, so it will be an aesthetically pleasing game for the viewer.
