A Call to Arms

If you didn’t believe it early last week, then surely you did late Thursday night. And if you didn’t believe it then…well, certainly your eyes were opened by Karl Hess on Saturday afternoon, or by the league office later that night. Now, there can be no going back.

NC State is no longer a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Neither is Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Maryland, etc. NC State just happened to be put on notice first. Lucky us. It’s a four member league now, and has been for some time – Duke, North Carolina, ESPN, and John Swofford’s ego. No more room at the inn. It doesn’t matter that this is the house that Everett Case built. If you’re not wearing blue, you are no longer welcome.

Each NC State student, alumnus, and fan has a responsibility. Under no circumstances can you let this go, let this blatant disrespect stand. If you do, you’ve announced to the Swofford cabal that you will absolutely swallow absolutely anything…then smack your lips and ask for another helping. This goes far beyond sports – the cabal has pissed all over your alma mater, your diploma, and the diploma of your fathers, mothers, siblings, and the future diplomas of your children. If you’re headed to the RBC Tuesday night…be creative. And angry. Really, really angry. Make sure the chancellor hears you. That the athletic director hears you. That the Board of Trustees hears you.

Don’t expect to hear happy words. Expect, nay, demand action. Watch for signs that things are building to a crescendo behind the scenes. And don’t throw in the towel, no matter what. To live on your knees is not living at all. Fight for the legacy of Everett Case and James T. Valvano. Fight for your honor and dignity. Fight for the student athletes past, present, and future who have given and will give blood, sweat, and tears to wear the red and white (and sometimes black). If you don’t fight for them…why would you expect them to fight for you?

What are they waiting on??? Why has Swoffy not responded??? I think we all need to head over to the ACC office and protest! I’ll bring a sign!

Swoffey must go! He is a joke and should not be leading the ACC. Fire Hess and other clown that shoved Zo now!!!!

  2. nouveau wolf 02/19/2012 at 4:45 PM #

Sorry, but I’ve been reading these “Leave the ACC” posts for some time now, and I feel like Clark Griswold in the 1st “Vacation” when his family gets sick of the drive to WallyWorld and suggests they just go home. His wife says “What do you think, Clark?”, and he says:

I think you’re all f’d in the head. 10 hours from the f’n funpark and you want to bail?!?!

The reason State gets disrespected, as much as it’s complete crap and isn’t fair blah, blah, blah, is because we’ve been irrelevant for a while.

Say what you want about the officials @ the Duke game, we still should have won. The officials set the bs tone of the 2nd half(why, I have no idea) but we INCREASED the lead over the next 9 minutes in spite of it.

We have a GREAT coaching staff now; we have a good team; we have 3 (4?)top recruits coming in. We’re 10 months away from the f’n good times, and you want to bail?!?!

  3. Wufpacker 02/19/2012 at 5:01 PM #

Yep. We’re all gonna be having so much fun we’re gonna be whistling “Zip a Dee Doo Dah” out of our…..

But remember what happened when they got there? Right now, I feel more like Clark did when he punched Marty Moose in the face.

(Swofford being Marty Moose and the conference being Wally World, of course….eh, it’s not a perfect analogy, but you started it).

I can hear the moose-voice coming out of Swofford’s pie-hole right now. “Heh, heh. Sooorrrrry….”

We are not going to stop playing basketball. We simply want to go to a conference that isn’t as rigged as WWE.

Thus, we will be able to compete for conference as well as national championships.

  5. graywolf 02/19/2012 at 5:15 PM #

^ This compete in a conference that is not rigged towards Blue colors!!

I was reading the Tarhole blog and it seems they feel the same about the Hess issue. It is actually refreshing to see that other teams (including the Blues) feel Hess was way wrong and the ACC officials in general need some punishment for their lack of skills.

Maybe the only time in history we can agree on something. The general feeling around the league is the fiasco from Hess and crew needs to be addressed more than a generic statement from the ACC office.

“Getting rid of Swoffy. I don’t see that happening.”
But you do see the UNC system and the NC legislature allowing a move to the SEC? It’s not an AD or boosters making this decision. IOW, it ain’t going to happen. And when you present your case to the judges that be, what is the case, the evidence? “The refs are unfair to us”? The things we on this board think are important are simply not, in the grand scheme of things.

We blow a 20 pt lead in one game; we shoot 29% the next; a ref does something stupid but irrelevant; and a segment of our fans perceive the conference leadership conspires against us. Therefore, we want to leave the ACC.

This Hess incident has become a national story. Everyone’s talking about it. So why in the hell is Johnny taking so long address this matter?

Hey, Swoff didn’t kick Googs and Corch from the game, Hess did, I understand that. However, Swoff is the head honcho of the ACC and Hess is an employee. The proper handling of unusual situations like this is the whole reason why a Commissioner’s role is so necessary. We need to hear from Swofford!! A prepared statement written by an intern isn’t adequate.

So what are you waiting for Johnny? Get to work!

Get a clue smile. It is not about how sorry we played against FSU. The decision by Hess to toss two of our fans(who happen to be former players of high stature) from our own building is hardly irrelevant. Obviously you are either very young or a fan of another school trolling for the fun of it. There is an obvious bias and lack of respect towards State. Anyone paying attention can see this. We are not just talking out of our ass holes because we lost to FSU. The Dook game was stolen from us due to the way the fouls were called and who they were called on. That led to the debacle against FSU and Hess rubbed salt in the wound. Then we get a tepid release from the ACC saying nothing. People are sick of this crap and ready to move on. This did not just happen because we lost to FSU. It is amazing how clueless or ignorant some folks can be.

” a ref does something stupid but irrelevant…”

Say what you will smile102, but it was not irrelevant.

In fact, that belief would lend credence to what I’ve tried to educate fans, there are reasons why players on whole don’t care what fans think.

What transpired yesterday was a direct shot to my cohorts and myself.

And the fact that alota’ guys in here have our backs on this one is refreshing.

I’ll have no part in your irrelevant comment.

From the moment I read about this, it felt like a huge slap in the face -to the university, all graduates, but especially, especially to any former athletes. Not having that honor, I have kept my mouth shut. REALLY good to hear from TheCOWDOG on this one. Most of us are right behind you guys. We don’t thank these guys enough. Same to all you others out there.

And I LOVE the move by Yow. There’s the obvious – both guys on the team. But isn’t 1988-1989 the year when the team was absolutely screwed by the ref with travel call against Georgetown? If so, I tip my hat to Yow! Masterful move!

  13. BureauOfMines 02/19/2012 at 6:21 PM #

As for the 2 RPD officers, they are part and parcel of the scene at the RBC center. The RBC Center hires them as it’s private police force. I don’t buy the protocol explanation. They will do this again. Mark my words. This will be the rule rathe than the exception.

This is another of the many reasons why we should not have left Reynolds.

  14. nouveau wolf 02/19/2012 at 6:30 PM #

Do I think there is a bias against State when playing the Blues? Yes. Good teams/players get the benefit of the doubt. Watch a rookie pitch to Pujols sometime. Quite frankly, it’s part of sports.

Was “The Ejection” infuriating and inconceivable? Check.

Leaving the ACC? Agree to disagree, but I imagine a guy who said “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up” would also think that might not be the best plan…

  15. mak4dpak 02/19/2012 at 6:31 PM #

Move to the SEC? You guys are really beating a dead horse, and it is not happening, ever. Sorry! We are not the ones that control that matter, and never will be. The officiating on the other hand is something we can take up with the league. Our best remedy, with the possibility of something happening. We ranted about the BS calls in the Duke game, and we were definitely slow to get whistled in the FSU game, and nobody fouled out either. So we need to voice our concerns with whomever needs to hear them, in regards to officiating in the ACC, where will forever remain.

  16. IamGumbyDammit 02/19/2012 at 6:53 PM #

Never say never. SEC would be a win for us in many ways. Think about the recruiting advantage for in-state football talent, the end to the media’s incessant “can’t compete with Duke/UNX in basketball”, bigger payouts from TV contracts, etc.

I know this discussion is about specifics but I am just frustrated to death at this season and every other season for the past 20 yrs. at State when it comes to their basketball program.

I have been a State fan for close to 40 yrs. and the last 20 have been spent looking back at the first 20.

This week was a microcosm of the dance step we have been performing for a long time. ONE STEP FORWARD AND TWO STEPS BACK.

*Note that I agree all of this is not self-inflicted. The dis-respect is at such a high level with certain conf. officials(on the court and off) that the “TWO STEPS BACK” is not always our own doing.

  19. Wolf74 02/19/2012 at 7:03 PM #

“mak4dakpak Says: We ranted about the BS calls in the Duke game, and we were definitely slow to get whistled in the FSU game, and nobody fouled out either.”

Do I understand that you feel no one fouled out of the NCSU/FSU game? If so, I have to report Richard Howell fouled out on a bogus foul. It was obvious he didn’t foul but they (the bias ACC refs) called a foul. CJ Leslie had 4 fouls. Lo Brown not only got tripped by an FSU player directly in front of the ref, the ref ended up shoving Lo in the chest after another FSU player was mouthing at him.

Now we may not have a shot at the SEC but if we put out feelers maybe the Big 10, Big East, Big 12 or someone will pick us up and get out of this 2 team hack of a conference. The best thing would be, of course, to have Swofford and all the refs fired!

  20. 61Packer 02/19/2012 at 7:06 PM #

The way this season is now going, I fully expect the following events to transpire this coming Tuesday:

My morning News & Observer will predict another UNC wipeout of NCSU, adding that another such loss would be richly deserved due to our ascinine fans who not only run off good coaches but also who can’t even behave at home games when they’re losing. And this will be blamed primarily on large farm animals, Jim Valvano and Chris Washburn.

DG, Gold and Ovies will again take to the air waves and tell the lunatic Pack fans that they’ll lose far worse than last time, and that they deserve this for running off Herb Sendek, a really good coach.

When I get to the RBC Center, there will be a 30-minute traffic jam at Gate B. When I finally make it inside after being strip-searched, there will be UNC fans in blue all over the place. Sitting behind me will be John Clougherty, sandwiched by John Swofford on his left and Lee Fowler on his right. And sitting directly in front of me (and blocking my view) will be be the unruly Guggs and Chris C, who will stand for the entire game, waving a large banner that has a big photo of a Hess Service Station sign underlined by F U KARL!

The team will come out dressed in black uniforms.

Gottfried will come out in a red blazer.

The same officiating crew from the FSU game will come out.

ACC officials will announce before tipoff that fan misbehavior will not be tolerated, whereupon someone throws a Coke Zero bottle at Roy.

Believing that the missile came from just behind the scorer’s table, Roy has both Tom Burleson, David Thompson and the entire State student section removed from the building before the tipoff.

Wood goes 13 for 13 from behind the arc and State wins, 78-73.

The Pack drops its next 4 games.

  21. BJD95 02/19/2012 at 7:13 PM #

Seeing how we didn’t even get a weak-assed apology for yesterday’s shenanigans, I don’t see how we could ever dream to get the officiating substantively fixed.

  22. tuckerdorm1983 02/19/2012 at 7:16 PM #

61 packer at some point the refs will stop the game and hold an exorcism to “eject” from the RBC center the ghost of Everett Case.

  23. mak4dpak 02/19/2012 at 7:37 PM #

Wolf74, I stand corrected, I was at the game, and forgot about Howell fouling out, because I guess I have become accustomed to him doing that. But other than that we had our full compliment of players, and didn’t play most of the second half with our front line players riding the bench, as in the Duke game. And after emailing Debbie Yow, she informed me that she has requested a meeting with Swofford.

There are many things that can be done. Depends who wants to do them, how many people you have organized to get them done, what flack you do and do not want to take for doing them, how much publicity you do or do not want, etc.

For example, officials can be systematically abused verbally at games–all game long. ESPN and Raycom announcers can be drowned out all game long. Banners can be smuggled into the Case Center saying all kinds of things. The phone lines to the ACC offices can be deluged and thus unofficially shut down for hours on end. Letters can be sent to the newspapers and online sites. Backchannel discussions can be started with other schools to gauge their desire to have Swofford replaced with someone trustworthy. etc. etc. etc. There is no lack of ideas. There is only the question of commitment to various courses of action.
