Pack/Canes Game Thread

As was the Wake contest last weekend, this will be a “treadmill game” for me. I will join you in the comments for the second half, but hopefully my first half running will provide similar good luck.

NC State is in a three game “house money” stretch. Well, sort of. Going 0-for-3 wouldn’t be good – but one win is all we really need to hold serve and be well on track for a winning record in ACC play – which is the sensible goal for the 2011-12 Wolfpack.

CJ Williams will apparently give it a go today, which is huge for us. Hard to beat anybody with just a 6-man playable rotation. I like today being a test case for him – if he can’t play much or is exceptionally sore afterwards, I expect him to be held out until next Saturday’s pivotal contest against UVA. But that is just my opinion, and I’m sure tons of people will bitch about it some more. Free country and whatnot.

“This could have easily been a loss.”

However we held on, made the plays when most needed, and moved to 4-1 in ACC play. This would have been a loss if it was played during the 1992-2010 season.

Bjd work on the cardiovascular so u can get back on that thing in 2nd half.

Great game for team…no such thing as a bad conference road win.

I am getting really close to filling the pitcher with water. If this team can learn some things about playing with a lead they could really do some damage the rest of the season. Way to grind out a road win.

Big game. Got close, some loose play, but that’s why all 40 minutes count. Thing is, this team has more potential as is. This is a good place to be, pretty good with untapped potential. Gott has done a hell of a job, in terms of quality and on court aesthetics- fun team to watch. Lo is becoming one of my all time favs.

Great win and tied for the ACC lead! Who woulda thought that? Now if we can just learn to stop losing leads, we will be a force in the ACC.

“Now if we can just learn to stop losing leads, we will be a force in the ACC.”

We didn’t lose a lead. We withstood an under 10 minute rally from an ACC foe on the road while maintaining the lead.

Great win. Tough to watch at times… don’t think we could have won with as much sloppy play against Duke, UNC, UVA, FSU, at minimum. Too many mental errors. But… great win.

Regarding Wood’s NBA chances, consider Reddick has been in the NBA for years, and he isn’t a good defensive player, either, and he also lacks athleticism. At least Wood has more height. And there have been others in the past, like Steve Kerr, Craig Hodges, Tim Legler, etc. Unfortunately for Wood, most of them have been point guards, and Wood would have to play SG. It will be interesting to see, but I think he’ll get a chance.

Awesome that he broke Reddick’s record. Hope he can continue on to the NCAA record. If the announcers were correct, he is something like 27 short at this point.

Painter was 8-10 on FT and 18 points.

Super win..I can start breathing again…with this coaching/recruiting staff, it really looks like our desert wandering time is coming to an end.

Painter most improved player on the team. I said from game one.

Hello Tuckerdorm1983! Met at the LM months ago.

We turned the ball over several times in the second half, and did not make smart decisions, which put Miami back in the game. Those turnovers cost us our big lead. And that is something we have to work on when teams attempt to rally against us. And that is the way I saw it, and if you don’t agree, doesn’t bother me. Not on here to attack fellow wolfpackers comments that are different than mine, as one individual does to me quite a bit. We are supposed to be pulling for the same team. Go State!

Okay, a win on the road is good for us! Now, we need to play harder in closing out games and not get so careless. Congratulations to Scott on the free throw record. Stay with it and get the NCAA record! Tied for first! Can’t argue with that!!!!

Any time during the Sendek or Lowe era’s we would have lost this game. 4-1 in the acc is a nice feeling.

  17. Dogbreath 01/22/2012 at 3:14 PM #

Lowe or Stiffdek would have kept Leslie in the game that last minute, and he would have added three more boneheaded plays to seal the deal for the other team. Gottfried had the good sense to sit his ass down, and that’s the difference, friends, in coaching.

  18. Tuffy2 01/22/2012 at 3:17 PM #

Agreed graywolf! Everyone needs to remember what our expectations were before the season started. I would say we are ahead of schedule and doing things without a deep bench.

  19. Tuffy2 01/22/2012 at 3:18 PM #

    Right on Dogbreath!

Our Defense fell off in the second half because of the line-up change Larranega made leaving Reggie Johnson on the bench and going with a 3 guard rotation…they were much quicker, could take quick advantage of turnovers and break into our zone…Larkin played wonderfully and will be a problem for the next 4 years…

I will say the first half we played some fantastic D…often forcing them into bad shots…that contributed to them missing wide open 3s in the second half or even passing up 3s…they lost their confidence in their shots…Look at Scott & Grant’s line…they were invisible all day…we did to them what we did to Harris/McKie at WF…

Just as it hurt for Miami to keep Johnson on the bench, it really helped State late in the game to put CJL on the bench.

Another great coaching move by Gott!

  22. Tuffy2 01/22/2012 at 4:08 PM #

Just think if we made the coaching change one year earlier.

  23. MrPlywood 01/22/2012 at 4:09 PM #

Wood had 21? Wow, when did that happen?

  24. turfpack 01/22/2012 at 4:19 PM #

Soooo…..this is what it’s like to have a real coach and some talent……almost forgot what it was like.

  25. Jediwolf 01/22/2012 at 4:21 PM #

Y’all need to lay off CJL, he is a vital part of our team and he continues to improve as the season progresses. Great win, 4-1, tied for first in ACC. GO PACK! GO GOTT!
