Dabo Fires Back at Spurrier

Nice to see another coach who is willing to stand up for his players, coaches, program and university.

From Scout.com

What about Spurrier’s comment, ‘We ain’t Alabama, we ain’t LSU, but we ain’t Clemson.’ It was kind of a derogatory tone. I wondered if you had a comment on that.Swinney: That’s sad I get asked a question like that on a Thursday before a championship.I heard that. That’s the kind of thing that gets back to you. I don’t know if he really said that or not. I guess he did. There’s been no rebuttal. If he did, that’s disappointing. I was taught to win and lose with class. That’s kind of a childish thing to put out there, to be honest with you.

I think our program here speaks for itself. I guess I’d have to say I agree with him. If I had to say anything, he’s right. They’re not Clemson. They’re never going to be Clemson, to be honest with you. No three-game win-streak is going to change that. It’s not the first-time they’ve won three in a row. It won’t be the last time. It might be 50 more years, but it will probably happen again.

I’ve gone out of my way to be complimentary to them, complimentary to coach Spurrier. I’m going to defend my program. I’m going to defend my players, my coaches. I’m going to defend Clemson University, because I believe in it. I think he’s exactly right. They’re not Clemson. They never will be.

You’re looking at the best era in the history of South Carolina football right now. I think they just had their second 10-win season. They won a championship in 1969 and the 2010 SEC East. This rivalry, there’s a lot of rivalries out there. This is more of a domination. And that’s a fact. My kids’ grandkids won’t live long enough to see this ever really become a rivalry. It is what it is.

Again, I’ve got respect for their program. South Carolina’s not Clemson. There’s a lot of differences. This is a place that’s won a national title, 17 conference championships, two division titles. Heck, we’ve won more bowl games than they’ve ever even been to. I think our program has 100-plus more wins than South Carolina. That’s reality. That’s the best era they’ve had in 115 years of South Carolina football — right now. And they’ve done a great job. They’ve whipped our butt the last three years. It’s my job to change that.

Coach Spurrier’s been there seven years. After five years, I think he had 35 wins. New contract, all that kind of stuff. After five years and I have only 35 wins at Clemson, there’s going to be a new coach here. You know what? There should be, because there’s a different standard. He’s exactly right. They ain’t Alabama. They ain’t LSU. And they’re certainly not Clemson.

That’s why Carolina is in Chapel Hill and USC is in California. The university in this state, always has been, always will be — Clemson. It’s right here in Clemson, South Carolina. Print that. Tweet that. Whatever. Again, it’s ridiculous that I’m getting asked a question like that on a Thursday. I’m proud of who we are. I know who we are at Clemson. I know where we’re going.

I guess my response is, he’s right. He’s exactly right.

Well played Dabo, well played indeed.

Agreed….classic response. TOB couldn’t have done better.

I’ve been on the fence with Dabo (like or dislike), and I still think he resembles a Pokemon when he gets excited, but after this response I can’t help but find myself pulling for him and his team a little bit.

And that’s coming from a Clemson hater from way back.

I may never be a Clemson fan, but after watching that ,I am now a Dabo Swinney fan !! What an awesome come back/putdown to the arrogant Spurrier clown !!

I think it’s an awesome response, however, I read somewhere that Spurrier never actually made the “We ain’t Clemson”comment. I’ll search for a link…

^ErB, the story is that the reporter added the “We ain’t Clemson” comment immediately after Spurrier said they weren’t LSU or Bama. However, it was posted on Twitter by USC as Spurrier’s complete comment. What a bunch of idiots!

So I do think Dabo had every right to fire back and speak up for Clemson’s historic dominance over USC, though Spurrier should not be at fault. More bowl wins than USC has ever even played. Ouch!

I really like the way Dabo responded. He’s all Clemson, for sure. I’m headed to the game tonight with a couple of Tiger and Hokie fans – can’t wait! I’ll just officiate and play it cool. I just want to see a good game. I think Clemson can give them one, though I expect Beamer ball to come out on top in the end. I’ve been out in about Charlotte today and the city is packed with Tigers and Hokies. Good to see this will be the home for the next 2 years at least. Hope we can be a part of one of those!

A report I read very early this morning said the comment was actually Todd (in Todd we trust) Ellis relaying a quote from Spurrier.

I have hated the old ball coach since his days as the asshole at Duke and Ellis since the “gunslinger” event.

At this point I’m all in with Dabo even though I hate Clemson with a passion near to my passion against UNX.

I actually like Clemson. They’re a school that’s a lot like NC State, yet in a rural setting.

I’ve been on the fence about Dabo. Coming into the season, I thought he was toast. When their skid happened late in the year, I expected them to get crushed by VT in the ACC championship game and then him to clearly be on the hot seat. It looks like they’ll instead clinch a conference championship.

Dabo’s a great recruiter. I’ll give him credit in that he’s been willing to adjust coordinators and find things that work. I thought he looked like a complete idiot after the Auburn game, but this was a fantastic response.

Oh, and I can’t stand Spurrier. I disliked him at Duke, hated him at Florida, loved when he got ran out of Washington on a rail and again dislike him at S. Carolina.

Dabo showed he can get it done in the bigtime. Huge win. Gotta like him and the Tigers.

    LMAO

Way to go, Dabo! You just earned my respect twice-over this week. I thought you were a joke being promoted from WR’s coach on Bowden’s staff to HC. I was wrong. Go paint Miami orange!

Even if Superior didn’t say it himself, he would have.

didnt he say he was taught to “win and lose with class?” then it took hi 5 minutes to come up with a comeback, and it wasnt very classy.

Note to Dabo: Clemson is NOT S.C.’s “Flagship program”

Also, the Gamecocks won the bball game yesterday for the SC sweep.
