Where and When?

Please take heed – this is not a thread to bitch and moan about TOB coming back, or to bitch and moan about how most of us turned away in disgust at some point yesterday afternoon. Nay, tis a thread for Wolfpackers to share their stories of when and where they learned that NC State had in fact, somehow, someway – won that freaking game yesterday.

For me, I turned off the game at 21-7. I felt the nausea welling up in my gut, and I couldn’t put my special ladyfriend through another minute. Especially on a glorious sunny Outer Banks afternoon. So off to the dunes we went. She left her sunglasses in the hotel room, so while waiting, I flipped on the XM feed…and it was already 28-7. Game goes off immediately, and I swear not to even look anymore.

At about 5:20, I was on the way back from Corrolla, almost to Duck. Got a message from a friend saying “stuck in airport, did we beat MD??” I decided I should at least have the final score to report, so I pulled up ESPN’s college FB page…and did a literal spit-take. 56-41…STATE? No shit????

I honestly had no clue or hope until that moment. Given how none of my other Pack friends and family texted or e-mailed, I suspect many other SFN denizens have similar stories to share.

Each year, I wait for the last game of the season to rake the leaves. Usually we need to win to Bowl; and usually we squat and lay a steaming egg.
After getting down by 3 TDs, like clockwork, I stomped out to the yard. You see, “I’m 40, I’m a man” and I refuse to allow Bad STATE to ruin any more of my life – or my Saturdays – but I digress …
Before the wifey called me back inside, I managed to knock-out 80% of the back yard. See, rage can be our friend.
What a comeback! Good STATE showed up!

Was flying back from thanksgiving in Boston. Found the Maryland Radio station over DC, and hear this from the announcer “the wolfpack have given up 3 touchdowns in the last three games, they have given up 5 in the first half. ”

off goes the radio, and all thoughts are about who the new coach will be.

We land at RDU, turn on my phone, and it’s 42-41 state and I run inside to watch the last 7 minutes. What a game.

At 21-7 I decided it was time for the good luck charm. I left the den and grabbed the rake. It worked for the 41-10 UNC game and it worked for the Clemson game a week ago. As I rake, the Pack scores. At 41-35, my wife comes out and says “I can’t believe you are missing this”. “Sorry, this is for good luck.”

During the CJ Wilson interception, I tossed the rake high in the air and ran into the house. Since the TV runs 30 seconds or so behind the radio I burst into the den (dripping with leaf bits) and yelled “He’s taking it to the house” just as the TV showed Wilson making the pick.

Today, my back is so stiff, I’ll need a fist full of Advil to get through the day.

Was in upper section row DD with family and friends, the 1st half I was just miserable, texted my wife who was home that this game was making me physically ill. She wasnt watching the game(shes a Duke fan anyways) asks how bad we’re doing, I tell here its 41-14. Then I watched the greatest comeback in State history. 1st TD in the 3rd I thought well at least we have some more points on the board, it wasnt until maryland fumbled the ball early in the 4th that I began to think, holy crap we could do this. I lost my voice (usually happens at the game) all in the 4th quarter. I did not have that doom and gloom feeling after we went up 42-41, because our D had been answering maryland pretty good and since thier QB kept getting pressure I knew it was a matter of time until another INT with our ballhawking secondary. The last one for a TD was just the icing on the cake. That being said…I have been to State games that were blow outs, I have NO respect for those who say “this is over” and leave early, you’re as fairweather as UNX fans. In my lifetime I have NEVER left a State game early, why, because I know you dont give up on your team, if it is YOUR team you believe in 23 point comebacks against maryland, you believe in 18 point comeback against texas. GO PACK! I dont care how many heart attacks these teams give me they will always be my WOLFPACK!

I was leaving from a friend’s house to head to my folks’ to watch the game. I kept checking Twitter b/c my “Score Mobile” app wasn’t working. I never saw any of the fumbles and by the time I got to the house Maryland was up 14-0 I believe. I sat on my folk’s couch in utter frustration trying to decide when to head back home all throughout the game.

My father (who hates the ENTIRE ACC, and as an A&T grad, still never misses the chance to needle my Alma Mater) decided he’d watch the game in a separate room. As the comeback started, I refused to show any emotion or make myself believe it would happen. It really wasn’t until Wolff’s pick that I went to where my father was to gauge his reaction. He was just shaking his head in disbelief.

Even as we scored and scored again, I sat there watching with no reaction because we ALWAYS lose games like this. It wasn’t until CJ’s pick-six that I let out a loud “lets GO!!!!”

My father came in to congratulate me and shaking his head still he said “glad you all could make it to the Kenmore Washer & Dryer Confederate Bowl”

I LOVE the emotion that sports pull out of people…of all ages…

Funny how most people, just like me, assumed that when we scored to make it 42-41 – that MD would kick a fluke last second 60 yarder or something like that to win the damn game. Thankfully, we continued to pour it on. Reverse NC State Sh**…

I was doing the gamecast thing, hitting “refresh” while giving a tour of NYC. Last week I was at the Clemson game. Saw an old friend headed into CF before kickoff who said he was less than enthusiastic about the prospects of facing the Tigers.
“We’re gonna win today, bet the farm on it.” I said.
“And then we’re gonna lose to Maryland next week,” I continued, “C’mon man, you went to NC State you know how this movie ends.”
Made my first score check at 12:50. 14-0 Maryland. Here we go.
For all you Pack fans who truly believed and sat in those stands yesterday, I take my hat off to you, because I truly thought this was another instance of the bottom falling out under NC State. I check again: 21-7. Yup. Right on schedule.
Head over to Pack Pride to read a few “TOB go to hell and Die” threads. And I’m right there with them. How could a coach, knowing what’s on the line, bring in a team so woefully unprepared. Then I remember he did the exact same thing with a trip to he ACCCG on the line exactly one year ago. Maybe it’s time to end the TOB era. Check the score again. 34-14. Fire him. Fire him now. Do not let him coach the second half.
When it hits 41-14, I laugh out loud and promise to never watch a game again. (For the 1042nd time).
Not 30 minutes later I start getting the texts. “Are you watching this?” “Holy sh!T!!” “We are gonna win this!”
Half expecting it to be 66-14 I check again: 41-28. Lots of time left. Nope, not gonna get me again State. I fell for it last year when it was 38-31. Not getting excited to watch us lose on some boneheaded play or coaching decision. Fine, I’ll look again. 41-35. with 10 minutes left. That’s a lot of time. 42-41 States first lead. Nope. Not breaking out the pom poms to watch us lose on a last second FG. 49-41. Wow, MD is really gonna have to hustle if they want to spoil our season. 56-41. WHO THE F**K IS THIS TEAM?
I am amazed. Dumbfounded, and grasping for any other instance of NC State being so obviously DOA so late in the game and winning. As a matter of fact I have to go back to Bills-Oilers in ’92 just for a reference point of something I’ve seen in my lifetime of a comeback that large and that quick. This was shocking.
When you cheer for a team like NC State. You have to be a bit of a cynic so you don’t spend your whole life having your heart ripped out. But every so often, you get a game like yesterday that brings you back into the fold. Thanks Wolfpack. I needed that one.

I was in my seat for every snap, you bunch of pussies.

The key play for me was the 4th and 12 to Bryan in third quarter.

I was at the game. My wife and I never leave State games early because I’ve learned that no lead is too big to blow, and no lead is too big to overcome. That’s NC State football! But when we trailed 41-14, I decided to just watch the rest and not worry about it unless and until we made it a close game again.

I pretty much knew the game was won after we took a 42-41 lead with just over 7 minutes left. I did not think our defense was going to let Maryland score again. Plus, all the pressure was on Maryland after they blew the 41-14 lead and trailed. I didn’t think they would overcome that.

I never had a tv while a student at State, so i grew used to listening to games on the radio, wnich i still do today. I started out saturday on the tv but turned it off when it got bad and listened on the radio while i went to the self storage unit to unload some junk. I kept going back and forth from the game to Led Zeppelin III cd till the game got interesting in fourth quarter. Being superstitious about State games, I decided to stay and listen to the game at the storage unit when State began their rally. I cant imagine what it must have looked like on the self storage video surveillance monitor to see this guy all by himself dancing around his car in front of a long row of storage units. At least the cops didn’t show up.

Was in my seat in section 27 the whole game. Was feeling pretty down when it was 41-14 and didn’t see much chance of a comeback, but couldn’t bring myself to leave early on Senior Day and the last game of the year in CF. SOOOO glad I stayed for maybe the greatest football game I’ve ever witnessed. OF COURSE we shouldn’t have been down that much to MD in the first place, but that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that this team fought back when they smelled blood in the water and beat down those Twerps. As many have said already, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer team/fan base. Loved the look of the MD section across the field when we took the lead: dead silent and no movement. It was as if they had all be replaced by cardboard cutouts of MD fans.

I stayed until the end, but I also stayed until the end for the South Florida soaker a few years ago. Most of those around me in Section 23 didn’t. The best comment came from a guy who left at halftime, saying “I’ll bother you no more!”- I sit on the aisle and have to move for some of the larger folks who sit on my row.

There were other good comments too. After Glennon threw a few of his stink bombs in the first half, one red-faced guy a few rows behind me behind me kept yelling, screaming, “RUN THE BALL, RUN THE BALL!!! I WANT TO WINNN!!!!” His desperate tone and booming voice had us in stiches most of the first half. I know they had to have heard him down on the field. He wasn’t around in the second half, either.

As bad as this season turned out to be for some, it wasn’t the disaster we had in 2006. None of our losses this season were half as bad as those final two losses in ’06. We were pasted by a horribly bad UNC team in Kenan, and the following week ECU turned our stadium purple on Senior Night as we lost to a sorry Pirates team.

Hopefully, those days are behind us.

I was in Section 13 and at 41-14 I had given up.

This was the 2nd time I had cut family time at Thanksgiving short by a day to drive the 275 miles back from WV to Raleigh on Friday for a game against Maryland with a bowl bid on the line. And once again Maryland was destroying us. We didn’t even have anybody giving the Terps the business.

I usually have the rule that you stay until there are zeros on the clock but over the years there have been some exceptions. Yesterday was going to be one of those times. If Maryland scored again I was leaving.

I ended up staying until there were zeros on the clock because they never scored again. I’m still not sure how we won that game.

  16. Hungwolf 11/27/2011 at 11:26 AM #

Ihad predicted at the start of the season this team would go 7-5 or better so I was determined to see the season through. I stayed for the whole game, glad I did.

    Quick few season observations:

It took Glennon longer to mature than I thought.
Injuries hurt us early in the year.
We were a young team and it showed at times this year.
We have more depth than I thought.
We are better suited talent wise for next year than I thought.
I still have faith in TOB and Dana Bible.
The unspoken co-dc concept took time but seems to be working.
3 bowl games in five years, seems to be early Beamer type building of a program.
We need to add 14K more seats to our stadium to put us in higher level of stadiums at schools with great football programs and we need an indoor practice facility.

    Just thoughts. Go Pack!

I was in Dick’s Sorting Goods, Short Pump Center, Richmond, Va. I saw a guy with a NC State hat on – asked if he had heard a score. A lady standing by overheard and asked what game I was looking for. She pulled up the score on her smartphone. 34-14. A couple of hours later while eating at Cheesecake factory I get a call from my sister telling me they won. Honestly did not believe her.

Sitting in Section 11, eating a funnel cake, sipping a Coke, thinking about how many times since my freshman year at State in ’68 the Pack and Terps had gone at it and how many times the Terps had spoiled a good season for us. Then I realized, the jerseys read “STATE”, not “NC STATE”. The turtles had no chance.

Was in the car with the fam on the way home from Thanksgiving with the in-laws. Turned on the radio only to hear we were down 41-14. I thought, “I couldn’t have heard that right.” Kept listening in hopes that I had heard wrong. My worst fears confirmed, I nearly turned off the radio in disgust. Something told me to keep listening, and as it happens I tuned in at the exact right moment as it was all State from then on. Even though I couldn’t see the game, it was clear from listening that the momentum just totally shifted and Maryland’s D was toast.

I was on the field for the game (I am a photographer and alum). Believe it or not, most people who I was speaking with continually thought we could come back throughout the game due to our dominance last week (until they got 41). Throughout the game, I was reminded of the 98′ game vs Baylor. At the time, I was with the video staff so I traveled with the team and we were down 30-0 at halftime and ended up losing 33-30. That second half was magical – just like yesterday. When you have played like we did last week, you have to know you can pull something out like that.

On a side note, I thought back to Baylor in the Clemson game and that the Tigers could come back, but alas, the Wolfpack stayed strong.

I left the stadium at halftime to get in some of the tailgating that i missed, since i got to CF just as the game began. I think it was 35-14 at half. Could it get any worse? Of course it would.

Yes, i was one of “those” fans that didn’t get back in my seat when the second half started. But we enjoyed the gorgeous lot G tailgating, amongst the very best at CF while we listened to the game, bitching and moaning about NCSU football interspersed with remarks on what a perfect autumn day it was.

We agreed that we would just leave if Maryland scored again, which they did. 41-14!! More bitching and moaning. But, since we had just cracked open a second beer, we didn’t hurry off. Pack scores quickly to make it 41-21. We’re still not convinced, but still have beer to down. It’s now the 4th qtr.

41-28!! We’re still not convinced, but the game is more interesting. “Let’s wait and see of we can score again”, we agreed. We got the ball back and were threatening to score when we high-tailed it back to our seats.

The atmosphere was as good as I can ever remember, not counting victories over our “non-rival”. It sure was great to see our team, especially our seniors, finish on a high note. George Bryan was back to his old self. Sweezey, and the DL were back in form.

I think it was the lucky skunk, which missed the first period, but appeared for the second half. The skunk was at the UNC and Clemson games, when NCSU did not allow a single touchdown. Let’s not wear out the lucky skunk.

I never left. It was very similar to watching a car wreck or a building burn down. You know you should stop watching, but you just can’t.

  24. 232bectonhall 11/27/2011 at 12:38 PM #

I started watching the game on Directv, but the picture quality from Channel 40 (WMYA in Anderson SC (?)) was so bad that I hooked up the rabbit ears to the living room TV and switched over to WLOS 13.2 (where WMYA is OTA in my redneck of the woods). Better picture, but the Pack were horrible. By the time Maryland went up 41-14, I was pacing through the living room and about to wear a path through to the subfloor. For some still-unknown reason (anger? boredom? feeble attempt to change our luck?), I decided to take a small tv and the rabbit ears outside and watch our “chronic impending disaster” (to borrow from Uncle Tupelo) out on the back deck. There, outside in the mild but gloomy late November day in Rosman – standing because I was too nervous/superstitous to find a chair – was where I saw our miraculous comeback to finally beat Maryland.

I was at the Davidson-UNCW bball game in Wilmington with my wife, our daughter and her boyfriend. Our daughter was following the football game on her boyfriend’s iphone. She showed me the 14-41 score in the 3rd quarter, and I was very bitter and disappointed. Then she showed me 21-41 and 28-41 a few minutes later. Then she showed me 35-41 and then shortly thereafter 42-41. Then she showed me 49-41 and shortly thereafter 56-41. The pick 6 happened just as Davidson made 2 free throws with 2 seconds left to seal a 70-67 road win over Buzz Peterson’s Seahawks. Then later in the evening the Tar Holes lost. All in all a good day at the coast!
