In response to Everett Withers’ridiculously inappropriate comments yesterday, NC State Head Football Coach Tom O’Brien LET FLY this morning! (Link)

NC State coach Tom O’Brien on UNC’s coaching staff today: “As far as the flagship, here is a guy that was on a staff that ended up in Indianapolis. There are three things that you can’t do in college football — have an agent on your staff, pay your players and have academic fraud. That is the triple pay. I don’t know if they have anything to talk about. If that is what the people want in the flagship University of North Carolina, then so be it.”

This is becoming nasty between UNC Interim Head Coach Everett Withers and NCSU Head Coach Tom O’Brien.

On Wednesday in an interview with 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio Withers said, “When you have as many schools in this state as you have and the recruiting base gets watered down a little bit, I think the kids in this state need to know ‘the flagship school.” Withers also said, “They need to know it academically. If you look at our graduation rates opposed to our opponent this week’s graduation rates for football, I think you’ll see a difference. If you look at the educational environment here, I think you’ll see a difference.”

Tom O’Brien was quick to fire a rebuttal during his usual weekly Thursday availability with the media. In response to Wither’s “flagship” comment O’Brien said, “As far as the flagship, here was a guy (Withers) who was on a football staff that ends up in Indianapolis.” He went on to say, “You have an agent on staff, you are paying players & you have academic fraud. That’s a triple play.”

O’Brien also had a response to the academic questions that Withers raised on Wednesday by saying, “At our school, number one, all classes have a syllabus. Our guys go to school, they are not given grades, and they graduate.”

Will Brinson had a super ‘FakeTOBQuote’ on his Twitter account this morning —

“It doesn’t really matter whether Carolina wins, they’ll end up vacating it anyway.”

    Nice response.

    It’s kind of funny. Less than a week after their double secret “sentencing”, and already they’re pointing fingers and calling others out. It seems Mr. Withers has truly embraced “The Carolina Way”.

    Here’s why O’Brien’s comments may be brilliant. You can’t quote his smack talking without printing some nasty, detailed facts about the UNC case that have been glossed over.

    – Withers was on the criminal staff
    – They paid players
    – They had an agent on staff
    – They committed academic fraud
    – Their classes for football players didn’t have a syllabus
    – They are handing out grades to players who don’t go to class

    Try to quote TOB without shining a light on the facts of the UNC mess.

    I hope ESPN etc. quotes him word for word.

    TOB certainly has flaws, and hasn’t had near the level of success I expected. But damn is he ever fantastic with the media. He chooses his words carefully, and is precise with his messaging. I didn’t think it was possible to tie up the breadth of the scandal so nice, pretty, and succinctly. TOB just did it, and he waited for the perfect time before doing so.

    We’re going to beat their asses on Saturday. Hopefully the score will be lopsided, and we do everything possible to run up the score. I remember Woody Hayes being asked why he went for two late in a 50-0 win over Ohio State. He replied “because I couldn’t go for three.” I would gladly trade losses the rest of the year just to see that happen.

    I fully expected this was the perfect game for UNC to destroy us as the State players just rolled over and died. Now that Withers has opened his mouth I think the State players will go about business and keep the streak alive.

    Everyone is missing the obvious reasons behind both Withers AND TOB’s unusually impolitic comments this week:

    They BOTH know this is the LAST State-UNC game they’ll ever coach and they are getting their shots in while they can.

    In any other scenario, they’d be much more mum.

    My problem is I cannot watch this game. It gets harder every year. I hate those bastards so freaking much that when I watch us play them my blood pressure goes too damn high, I thorwo things at the TV, scream, and generally turn into a basket case.
    I cannot believe someone whose program just got caught with their pants around their ankles would make a statement like that. In fact a statement like that is rarely if ever made by a “professional.” Obviously this Withers guy is an idiot. I am sure the new AD was going WTF?

    Withers obviously is not ready to be a head coach, this is as dumb a comment as you could dream up. He’s trying to rally the UNC faithful, but instead lobbed a softball across TOB’s plate.

    Nice shot TOB, but to be fair, this guy made it easy.

    Hope it fires the guys up to play over their heads and make it 5 in a row.

    Withers is a complete idiot. He just fueled a team (us) that was not very well motivated throughout the year. Well…. You can bet your a$$ they are motivated now.

    TOB did an excellent job with his response. Straight and to the point. I am so pumped up after reading TOB’s comments! Love it. Go Pack!!!

    Dont worry Mr Withers there are plenty of jobs out there for a man of your skill set. Just keep practicing “Can I take your order please” and “Here or to go? ” and you’ll do just fine.

    Moustache: I think you’re on to something. Both are playing for their jobs this weekend. They both know that if they lose, it will be the final nail in the coffin. Withers is done regardless. TOB can make another year with a win against UNC and then beating some very weak BC and MD squads.
