This is a great job by Coach Gott and his staff. Duke was all over Purvis and when he would not commit and word was he was State bound they pulled their offer. He is a big time prospect that everyone wanted. I was not exactly thrilled when DY hired Gott but I must admit that so far he has been very impressive with what he has done with our program. Purvis will be a tremedous help in signing other top notch recruits. Finally some good news for Statefansnation.

I just remembered that Tyler Lewis said before August that he thought Rodney Purvis would be the next State commit.

I think we can give this kid a heck of a lot of credit for helping get Purvis. He said this back before Torian Graham dropped out.

I love when it becomes clear he is leaning or going to NC State we see the “he’s dirty” tweet (yesterday) and “needs to learn to play as team” tweet (today) randomly pop up. Give me a freaking break.

It is very much like the comments around John Wall. You know what…they both are studs that 90% of every team in the country would have loved to have on their team.

Fantastic news! Congratulations to the staff – their hard work has begun to pay off. Purvis looks like an extremely good talent and a good kid to boot. He handled the press conference superbly. I really like some of the things he said. It’s expected that an announcing recruit will gush over the coach. But some of the other things caught my attention: “fans here are great”, “hands down the best basketball conference”, “I’m really gonna work hard to get Brice and T.J”. That’s what you want to hear kids saying about your program.

I like this somewhat “early” commitment from him. It makes me feel convinced that he’s going to sign his name when the time comes. Because if you’re a top player, and you want the best players to come join you, then you’ll want to commit early so the coach can go get the other good players to join you.

This early commitment will give Gott time to go after more. And he’ll be able to use Purvis and Lewis as recruiting tools.

    I like it!

All I can say is that there had better be some “Rod-ney Pur-vis” (clap, clap, clap clap clap) and “T. J. War-ren” chants at the football game tomorrow.

  8. eas 09/30/2011 at 9:19 PM #

This is on the Kentucky website:

But I digress. The fact of the matter is that this is one of the most important weekends in recent history for the Wolfpack. The amount of talent assembling on campus for a visit this weekend is impressive. T.J. will be joined by N.C. State commit Tyler Lewis, as well as D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, and Rodney Purivs. Purvis is set to make his decision tomorrow, and the smart money is that he will end up as the newest member of the Wolfpack.

This is where things get interesting, with two of the top North Carolina prospects already on board for the class of 2012, will T.J. feel pressured to join them? While they are far from being any sort of a package deal, there is a mutual respect between Purvis and Warren, and both are deadly scorers. T.J. has said that he will be attending Big Blue Madness which could be the deciding factor in his recruitment. While he hasn’t narrowed his list down completely yet, I believe it is safe to assume that it will come down to a three team race between N.C. State, Carolina, and Kentucky.

Huge news. I’m thrilled he picked us.

Gott has hit the road running.

I hope Lorenzo Brown doesn’t leave after this year. He could make leaps and bounds more progress (especially on defense) practicing against someone of Rodney Purvis’ and/or Tyler Lewis’ caliber. I think that was something that held Harrow, Brown and Leslie back last year. They didn’t have top-tier talent at their same positions to practice against.

Huge get for the Pack. He may not stay but one year, but he will bring other players to State. This class could be special, on paper. Then we will see what happens. Basketball looks to be on the way back.

That is the difference between TOB and GOTT. Our BB coach understands that Purvis might be a one and done player but he will open the flood gates to other great recruits. TOB believes in developing talent and in RW case, not recognizing that one more year and the amount of coverage dialed into NC State with him would have been a recruiting tool all by itself. I can’t speak for the defense and what has happened so far this year but who knew they would be the big problem before the season. Surely not TOB.

I am very excited for 2012 and the years to follow in BB. Welcome aboard Rodney!

There will be a day I will get to say that to an individual in football, the one sport I love the most when it comes to the RED and WHITE.

eas, you are right about TJ being here with Rodney and Tyler this weekend, but reports of DSR being here as well are incorrect.

I have a very strong feeling our next commitment is going to come from Mr. Warren.

  18. choppack1 10/01/2011 at 8:01 AM #

Tuffy – since you seem to have a desire to derail this topic – let’s just say your comparison is terribly flawed.

Timing is everything. You really think that if a senior QB like Wilson was available to TOB in HIS FIRST YEAR WHEN HE HAD DANIEL EVANS AND BECK AS QB’s he wouldn’t have taken a qb like Russell Wilson? Of course, he would have.

Think of it this way – let’s say that in the first 2 years Tyler Lewis doesn’t see the floor. He’s been doing everything that the coaches have asked.

Gott has a chance to sign 2 highly rated prospects who state that they will play 1 more year of college at the most…and oh yeah, they won’t participate in off-season workouts either. Should Gott sit Tyler in this case – especially if Tyler has the chance to be every bit as good as the other guards?

Also, since you’ve started this sidebar – the last time Russell Wilson went to Wake – did he win OR lose? If Glennon was at Wisonsin – you realize he’d be 4-0 and we’d be 2-2 right now too – right? (If you don’t think so, look at how well RW did in 2008 and 2009 when Nate Irving was out.)

  19. Tuffy2 10/01/2011 at 11:53 AM #

choppack1- I do not have a desire to derail this topic so you say but I am just stating what I think per participation in a blog.

As far as TOB taking RW of course he would once he saw him play either for another team or at practice. That was not what I was getting at here. He does not have a track record of pursuing 5 star recruits as he himself said he does not care how they come in as long as they leave a 5 star player.

Wisconsin had a offensive lineman that did not play or at least start for them last year yet he is starting for the Cowboys this year. Did the Badger coach feel obligated to play this guy? NO!

TOB had no problem with RW his junior year splitting his time and Glennon had his chance to beat out RW each year and he did not.

As far as me starting a sidebar on the last time RW went to Wake you have me mixed up with someone else but I will answer that for you anyway. The answer to that is, we do not know what our record would be! Now would we?

I’m with tuffy2 on this one. Who in thier right mind would give up another year of Russell Wilson for ANY reason? Come on, admit it. The team last year with RW and the right coach would have never lost to ECU, Clemson and Maryland. Why is Archer still here? TOB lets him stay!! Welcome Mr. Purvis!!! Great job Gott.

I’m with tuffy2 on this one. Who in thier right mind would give up another year of Russell Wilson for ANY reason?

You’re thinking about this all wrong. It’s not TOB “giving up” Russell. Think about it. That makes ZERO logical sense. TOB would have LOVED to have had Russell back this year. So you have to consider that when trying to understand the situation.

    1) There was no way we could keep them both. It’s a given that Glennon would have transferred out. As a graduate, he could have gone anywhere without sitting out a year. And it’s pretty widely accepted that he would have left if he thought Russell was coming back.

    2) Based on (1), we could only have Russell -OR- Glennon. Or NEITHER!

We never had Russell because he would not commit to a return to the team. TOB was in a precarious situation. If he handles this wrong, he loses Glennon, while NOT having a promise from Russell to return. If Russell ended up staying in baseball, TOB would have been left with neither.

TOB did what he had to do to ensure that we were GUARANTEED to have ONE of these players (since he couldn’t have both, and that is the key to all this). Since he could not get that guarantee from Russell, he did what he had to do to guarantee that Glennon would stay.

At the time this all went down, TOB made the only viable choice that he could make. Russell should have just kept his mouth shut and returned to the team if he wanted to play. He already knows (everybody knows!) that TOB plays the best man for the job.

got dang it…there are plenty, PLENTY, of places to discuss TOB, RW, etc…

I mean my God, we just got a top 20, 5-star guard FROM Raleigh…and we regress to the same old tired RW-TOB discussion…

I swear we are such masochist…

    Lightning and Thunder!?

Hey, I am very confident that MG CAN coach. He’s already proved that at Alabama. If he should tend to revert to any of the problems he had there, I think the coaching staff is such that they can keep him straight. Between the experience in the assistants, their proven interity, their backgrounds in such positions (including Lutz’s as HC) and their strong reasons to join the Pack, it looks like a winning combination to me. We just need the talent. And that seems to be coming!
