Gottfried speaks…and I continue to like what I hear

Luke DeCock gives us the following from this entry today.

N.C. State is close to a home-and-home series with Kansas, new basketball coach Mark Gottfried told the Raleigh Sports Club on Wednesday.

The Wolfpack would go to Lawrence in December 2012, with Kansas coming to the RBC Center in December 2013. Gottfried said the contract had not yet been finalized and signed.

Among about 30 minutes of comments and Q&A before about 200 fans, many dressed in N.C. State red, Gottfried pleased the crowd by taking a shot at Jim Boeheim. The Syracuse coach earlier this month mocked Greensboro as an ACC Tournament site while proposing a move to New York as Syracuse and Pittsburgh joined the league.

“I think the tournament has so much tradition, probably more than any other basketball tournament in the country,” Gottfried said. “I like the fact, whether it’s in Greensboro, or to me, Charlotte would be a great place. Jim Boeheim popping off up there that he thinks it needs to be in New York — he needs to get in the league first, before he starts making demands on the league.”

As for the upcoming season, Gottfried continued to set the bar low for the Wolfpack, which finished 10th in the ACC in Sidney Lowe’s final season.

“We have to find a way to collectively become a team,” Gottfried said. “The talent on our team is not great. It’s not terrible. It’s a group of guys that if they can become unselfish and truly buy into what’s important, we might be competitive this year. But we have a long way to go.”

Regarding Gottfried and the schedule, another interesting thing he said at the Raleigh Sports Club yesterday was that Yow had given him the funds to buy out of certain games in the OOC schedule in an effort to upgrade, and mentioned in particular that the tourney we are playing in with the home games vs. Morehead St. and Princeton and the matchup in New York with Vanderbilt was a replacement for a tourney in Las Vegas, that he characterized as not having a very strong field.

Anyone know which Las Vegas tourney that was?

Does anyone think that there is any way, that Coach Gott could possibly pull it off, and get us into the “Sleep America Classic”?

All this talk about Purvis reminds me of the coaching search when Sean Miller said he was staying in Arizona and everyone wanted to twist his words around to make it what they wanted to hear.

    Let it go.

If getting Purvis means the NCAA wants to investigate, I say invite them with open arms. If there’s something negative about him (meaning, NCAA violations of some kind), we need to know that up front instead of later.

Or could the point be that it is known that Purvis is commanding a “high price”, and that whoever gets him is automatically guilty of paying for his services?

I’d like to know more what was meant by that tweet from Matt Norlander. Also, if he just a Connecticut guy with sour grapes?

The one Purvis tweet and the Miller insanity are not related in the least…the situations have little to no correlation…

And anyone who doesn’t believe that upgrading our schedule was a top 2-3 thing to do must be in the blind as to what has been one of our most important, silly and correctable issues we’ve had as a program in the past 15 years (or more)…

How about some red and white “Gott Coach” tee-shirts?

Yeah well, somehow there’s never any mention of “baggage” when they decide to go to the other school in the immediate vicinity. If Purvis was listing unc right now, his credentials would be beyond reproach.

He’d be cuddly-cute, and just an absolute angel.

Coach Gottfried’s wife very generously tipped her pizza delivery driver $15 tonight, as I’m told. What does this have to do with anything? Absolutely nothing.

Also, I don’t think Gottfried, in his first year after many as a broadcaster, would let his staff do anything so suicidal as bring on an NCAA investigation in their first year. I mean almost (maybe everyone) everyone on the coaching staff has coached at the college level, some closer to the major level than others, all seeing some success. I’m the first to be worried when there’s change that happens too fast, but I think our staff are doing it the right way. They’re using our uncertainty and selling it as a positive.

Pfffft, don’t you worry about that at all logtrithum. “The NCAA”, why I’ll bet someone in Raleigh is already in a tizzy and ready to slam down on the panic button at any minute. “Quickly!!! Fetal positions or belly-up everyone. Your choice.”
