Gottfried speaks…and I continue to like what I hear

Luke DeCock gives us the following from this entry today.

N.C. State is close to a home-and-home series with Kansas, new basketball coach Mark Gottfried told the Raleigh Sports Club on Wednesday.

The Wolfpack would go to Lawrence in December 2012, with Kansas coming to the RBC Center in December 2013. Gottfried said the contract had not yet been finalized and signed.

Among about 30 minutes of comments and Q&A before about 200 fans, many dressed in N.C. State red, Gottfried pleased the crowd by taking a shot at Jim Boeheim. The Syracuse coach earlier this month mocked Greensboro as an ACC Tournament site while proposing a move to New York as Syracuse and Pittsburgh joined the league.

“I think the tournament has so much tradition, probably more than any other basketball tournament in the country,” Gottfried said. “I like the fact, whether it’s in Greensboro, or to me, Charlotte would be a great place. Jim Boeheim popping off up there that he thinks it needs to be in New York — he needs to get in the league first, before he starts making demands on the league.”

As for the upcoming season, Gottfried continued to set the bar low for the Wolfpack, which finished 10th in the ACC in Sidney Lowe’s final season.

“We have to find a way to collectively become a team,” Gottfried said. “The talent on our team is not great. It’s not terrible. It’s a group of guys that if they can become unselfish and truly buy into what’s important, we might be competitive this year. But we have a long way to go.”

He’s absolutely right about Boeheim popping off his mouth. I really like this coach and think he has a good chance of putting a winning program back in place but I realize it will not be overnight.

    Excellent Coach!
Step #1: Let’s get some names on the schedule. Step #2: Try to stay on the court with them.

Purvis decision comes Friday… Could add more substance to our backcourt !

Purvis said via Twitter he’s not coming to State.

I’d rather get TJ Warren anyway.

I feel that there might be a little tension brewing in the newly formed Syracuse NY-NC STATE relationship already. THAT IS GOOOOOD!!! I LIKE IT!!!

As far as the overall, I don’t expect homeruns every season out the recruiting trails, but there’s definitely room for Gott to exhibit his style of play, and then ramp up the overall talent level at State. As a matter of fact, I’m going into this upcoming BB season with little or no expectations of anything. I know there are kids who can play much better BB than they have shown thusfar, and I know that there is the potential for substantial improvement, but still, I’m not expecting anything in the miraculous category. I’m not going to hold the new HC fully accountable if a few of these guys don’t play much better than before, because there’s no substitute for bringing in a raw recruit, letting him know exactly where he stands, right off the bat, and what is fully expected of him as a student/athlete.

One thing I do not expect to see is any player, no matter who they are, or who they think they may be, remaining out there on the BB court while half-as*ing it and not playing team concept! If I start seeing that again, why I, I, I’ll… better not say.

i like mg what i think he’s bringing to nc state. …it helps alot that he’s not only got the charisma but has also been a winner before.

i’m always suprised at how he addresses the team and doesn’t give any unwarranted respect. i still feel that he’s sandbagging a little bit on the talent we actually have. but what he says works for me, i’m entering this year eager to see the boys play but with no real expectations. i like the potential kansas matchups… that will help get our name back out there.

Purvis said via Twitter he’s not coming to State.

Hoop, that’s not technically what he tweeted. From another SFN blog post:

Purvis just tweeted “if you heard I’m going to NC State – it’s false”

That could mean he’s not coming to State, or it could mean anything you’ve heard is not the official word because he has not made his announcement yet. That happens on Friday.

I’m not saying he is or isn’t coming to State. Just that I don’t put any stake into this tweet (good OR bad).

I figure we’ll know around 2:05pm on Friday.

And until his signs on the dotted line, it don’t mean nuthin’ anyway!

everybody’s (NCSU,UNC,DUKE) looking forward to basketball.
let’s face it. this ACC football season is sooo over.

MG is doing saying alot of good things. I feel good about him making measurable progress at State over the next 2-3 years, but I think he’s really behind the 8 ball with the upper classmen. He’s got alot of bad habits to break these kids from.

    ^ Like losing?

  12. packhammer 09/28/2011 at 8:40 PM #

And why is it that going out of your way to call out another coach by name is a good thing? Stupid is what it is. And scheduling Kansas? bmfd. Great. Now go get a team together that can compete in the ACC. There is too much work to be done for this bs. Coach has a lot to prove before I give my heart back to our basketball program. We have not done much of anything for over 20 years. Get serious people.

How many times do we have to have the football pulled away from us before we kick it?

Look, I don’t give a tinker’s damn what any of our coaches say as long as they don’t make complete fools of themselves (sorry Chuck) – and I’m not going to get excited about basketball until I can see what this guy can do.

He has enough talent and a good enough staff to win in a hurry if he’s going to be a special coach – and if he’s going to show us he can move on from his checkered past.

  14. redcanine 09/28/2011 at 9:08 PM #

Under Lowe, were one of the most poorly coached teams in the conference, perhaps the country. There is so much room for improvement with this team. I just hope they can get their mess together sooner than expected.

  15. bigwolfpacker 09/28/2011 at 9:44 PM #

Hopefully Purvis is trying to quiet a true rumor and just does not want to have the cat out of bag early. Anyway, its interesting to hear Gott say that we dont have a talented roster. I think we all know this to some extent but for him to be so blunt isnt something that is often said. I wonder what the players think of this statement.

the reality says: “I feel like there may be a little tension brewing in the newly formed Syracuse NY-NC STATE relationship already. That is GOOOOOD!!! I LIKE IT!!!”

the reality is: ESPN will see to it that we never have a chance to form any kind of a basketball rivalry with Syracuse. Just you watch, the Orange will be pitted primarily against Duke and UNC instead of NCSU. Just like ESPN gives all the “good” games to the teams they want on tv, we’ll be getting leftovers. After this December’s home game vs Syracuse (a non-conference game), I doubt Boeheim will still be at Syracuse by the time we get to play them at home as a league opponent. But you can bet we’ll play the Orange each season in FOOTBALL if ESPN gets its way.

It’s all about tv ratings. But +1 for MG, who’s trying to upgrade what has probably been Division One’s worst OOC schedule for any BSC-level school. At least if I can’t get to a home non-conference game, I’ll be able to find somebody who wants my tickets. I’m with you, MG; let’s get rid of the cupcakes!

I wish he had mentioned Everette Case and how he pretty much created the ACC Tournament. Get people informed about the history of the program BEFORE we were good in the ’70s and ’80s and then sucked from then until present. Most folks don’t even know we won 2 national championships, much less were relevant before that. And most students think Case is just a dining hall.

    Good article on the man:

Hope it’s OK to link to an outside source. I’d link to a SFN article if I knew there was one written on Case.

  18. choppack1 09/28/2011 at 10:31 PM #

61packer – we really can’t complain about being “dissed” in this rivalry talk until we prove to be anything other than a doormat.

We’re pretenders right now – and that’s the way it will be until proven otherwise. (And aren’t you the one who should be saying this stuff??)

  19. graywolf 09/29/2011 at 6:22 AM #

At least he seems honest regarding the talent we have on hand. Now lets get our talent level to where it should be……go out and recruit that talent we need to win!

  20. howlie 09/29/2011 at 6:36 AM #

To be fair to Boheim (& there’s no reason to) Gott has coached exactly 0 more games coaching in the ACC than Boheim… so it sounds a little silly to have one neophyte lecturing the other about ‘being here’ before making demands.

To be honest, I think that’s one of the reasons he brought in Alex Johnson. I think the depth at guard is important, but I think the more important thing he brings is 4 years of experience and leadership and some maturity. I think the same for Thomas de They who is over 20 years old and used to working hard at the basketball school he was at last year. I hope that those two along with the new staff is able to inject the needed good habits quickly enough.

What is the source of this “tweet”? I’ve looked through his tweets and can’t seem to find this one.

Interesting tweets from Matt Norlander of CBS sports. You have to scroll down serveral to see two interesting ones. First one says Purvis to State is a lock. Further down he states that in talking to another coach who recruited Purvis, that whoever gets him, the NCAA won’t be far behind.
