Cincinnati vs NC State Preview: First Big OOC Game

I’m feeling much too cynical about things to really draw this out, so we’ll keep it short and let everyone comment on how they feel about the game.  First, a little housekeeping… Cincinnati is spelled with three I’s and three N’s.  If you can’t spell Cincinnati, just say ‘Cincy’ or ‘the Bearcats’ or ‘that other offense tearing up our secondary’.

Cincinnati’s Record

As you may recall, we did a pretty good job of ripping Cincy a new one last year (30-19), but as O’Brien said, this isn’t last year.  The one thing you can say about Cincy is that they are all about one thing: offense, offense, offense.  Defense is NOT their forte.  Almost sounds familiar.

This season, they’ve played two fluff games and one game @ Tennessee.  So, here is why their record is concerning (and remember I said Cincy is all about offense):

vs Austin-Peay: 72-10 (W)
@ Tenn: 45-23 (L)
vs Akron: 59-14 (W)

A lot of people say you have to take wins against Austin-Peay (‘tuuurible’) and Akron (bottom of their conference) with a grain of salt, but 72 points, regardless of how you cut it, is a s***load of offense to put up against anyone who isn’t a middle school aged rec team.  Even against Tennessee, Cinci still posted 23 points, including two touchdowns (both in the first quarter against Tenn’s starters) and 3 field goals.  What this shows is that Cincy can post points against QUALITY opponents, despite their AWFUL 4-win season in 2010.

The one major thing going for State is Cincy’s head coach, Butch Jones, who in his second year is only 3-9 against FBS programs.  He has a strong, quick team with a lot of options, but isn’t exactly the best coach in the world.  The thing to watch out for is that this is only Butch’s second season at Cincy, so you can’t assume that 3-9 is consistent performance for his team.  The performance thus far supports that.

Cincinnati’s Offense

They run.  Period.  Their quarterback is decent, and I suspect they will use that to spread the field when possible, but they win their games on the running game.  UC has 12 individuals that have posted rushing stats (compared to NC State’s three), 4 of which have posted over 10 carries each for a total of 443 yards.  Now, we have to bear in mind (no pun intended) that there was that Austin Peay game where UC posted 561 yards, but it’s still worth noting that UC has options which is something many have been complaining our team hasn’t taken advantage of on our roster.

I mentioned their quarterback is decent.  He’s averaging around 62.3% for the season averaging 7.5 yards per attempt.  Keep in mind that Glennon, who despite our results is actually doing pretty good, is 64% for 8 yards per attempt.  Even against Tennessee, he was able to complete 61.7% averaging 6.8 yards per attempt.  Not great, but against Tennessee it isn’t trivial either.  The spread of passing-to-rushing is 45% passing and 55% rushing, so expect Cincy to use their passing game only as much as they feel they need to set up the rush.

Cincinnati’s Defense

Remember that Tennessee game?  Yeah, the Vols had 531 total yards in that game.  Tenn was able to complete 83% of their passes, averaging 9.9 yards per attempt.  That is far better than the Tenn QB’s (Bray) seasonal average of 68% averaging for 8.7 yards per attempt.  Don’t get me wrong, Bray was going to demolish UC’s defense anyway, but with inflated numbers like that, you have to look at UC’s inadequate pass defense and notice the problem.

Bottom line is that Cincy is not a defensive powerhouse by any means.  They have a weak pass defense which means they are going to attempt to keep Glennon off the field.  In the final 18 minutes of the Wake Forest game, recall that on a couple 1st and 2nd down passes, Glennon was able to strong-arm an offensive comeback.  Don’t assume Butch Jones hasn’t noticed that.

Bottom Line

Cincy is going to attempt to take advantage of their flexible run-game, keep the time of possession on UC’s side, and do what they can to get NC State off the field quickly.  Time is probably just as large (if not a larger) a factor as defensive efficiency in this game for Jones.  It’s a pretty simple equation that even ESPN is likely to get right: if the defensive line can overcome the personnel loses we’ve suffered and remain still against the run, we’ll do alright.  If we allow Cincy’s passing game to throw us off and become rendered ineffective against the run, we’ll get rolled.  Draw your own conclusions.

Just as O’Brien said, this isn’t last year and the same applies for Cincy.  They are by no means a “great” team, but they have an offense that can get it done.  If the defense isn’t fluid enough to read and adapt to Cincy’s running scheme, it might be a long night.

Thursday at 8:00PM on ESPN.

Welcome to the dark side, TBK.

Yeah, it was weird even writing the name “Butch” in an article about a team we’re thinking will take NC State without TOO much trouble.

As much as I’d love to say “that’s why they play the game!” going into this one, I just know this one is going to get downright ugly. Teams with just average offenses have put up yardage and/or points on us. What will Cincy do??? I don’t even want to know.

I think the only way we win is if the roughriders that intercepted Weinke (wasn’t it Weinke?) in his first game at FSU something like six times, show up tomorrow night. FSU moved the ball on us all day. They just couldn’t score due to a so many timely interceptions on our part.

In other words, it will take a near miracle.

Sure would love to see the defense show up and play like they did last year, though.

    LOL, no problem TBK.

I’m guessing the first team that kicks a field goal loses.

  4. hoop 09/21/2011 at 3:44 PM #

I’m pretty sure this going is going to get ugly.

But then I’ve thought that about other teams last year as well.

If we are going to win we have to have TJ run one back, a solid performance by everyone on the team, and a break out performance by someone unexpected. It’s all possible but the odds aren’t good.

  5. tuckerdorm1983 09/21/2011 at 3:58 PM #

Our only chance is if our offense comes out and takes it down the field and scores early and often. We might win a high scoring game. We get down be 17 plus points and we cannot come back.

  6. Packfan28 09/21/2011 at 4:38 PM #

If someone had of told me 5 years ago that in Tom O’Brien’s 5th year with the program we would all be predicting we will get our asses kicked by Cincinnati, I would have laughed in their face. I ain’t laughing now.

  7. Pack1997 09/21/2011 at 4:58 PM #

I am going to have to disagree with the majority of you. I think we win. A few reasons, in the Wake loss, we waited to long to really let Glennon go. I don’t think Bible will make that mistake this time. Also, after watching TN numerous times this year, I would say our D is similar to theirs. While our offense is not as good as theirs. Also, playing on a Thursday on national TV will get our players motivated from the first snap. I haven’t seen a lot of energy out of our team all year. If we play with energy, I think we win by 7.

  8. Wolfy__79 09/21/2011 at 5:35 PM #

i think we can win despite our defense not showing us anything to be proud of thus far and with glennon’s training wheels still being firmly attached. naturally, we have to outscore our opponent to win… hopefully it’s not a game where we’re trailing.. i wouldn’t mind seeing a phillip rivers vs. ttech game for glennon. that was exciting. i guess maybe the best thing for us to do is count ourselves out for this win to temper expectations?

  9. NelsonHall97 09/21/2011 at 6:36 PM #

NCSU 88: “Bearcat strategy should be to screw around on 1st and 2nd down, and then make it all up on 3rd and long. USA converted multiple 3rd and longs (as did Wake and Liberty) and on the occasions where they didn’t, it was bad throws to wide open receivers”

Point well taken. Our third down defense has been horrible so far. Having said that, the flip side of that argument is that the law of averages will at some point turn the tide. I expect we will get better 3rd down defense out of our guys in the next few games…and most certainly when some of our injured return for UVA.

  10. NelsonHall97 09/21/2011 at 6:46 PM #

I think we can win this game, but if we get behind by more than 10 we’re screwed.

  11. MISTA WOLF 09/21/2011 at 8:20 PM #

    hoop,

hopefully the player you are talking about breaking out that would be unexpected is George Bryan. He’s been no where to be found. Part of me wonders if his relationship with Russell has hurt him with Mike. Just saying. You guys think thats possible?

  12. 61Packer 09/21/2011 at 8:35 PM #

I really don’t see us winning an offensive road battle with this team. If our defense can shut down their offense, then our chances of winning should be pretty good.

    What’s our defense done lately?

  13. JEOH2 09/21/2011 at 8:57 PM #

On those crucial third downs we are missing an emotional leader on defense who pushes these guys to play with a sense of urgency. Nate Irving was always that guy last year, he inspired that front 7 to play with passion and reckless abandon on those downs.

It’s not Cole’s fault but he’s never been an emotional leader and there are very few people on our defense experienced or proven enough to take that role (Sweezy could I suppose)…

If you are going to have a defense that is not ultra talented, smart, athletic, or skilled…you need them to be emotional and passionate instead…

    just my 2 cents…

As a NC State alumini I disagree with how many of you show your loyalty as a fan base but it you want to micro-analyze and bash a bunch of 18-22 yr olds and a football coach who, beyond a doubt, knows more than all of you combined be my guest.

However the comment/question from Mista Wolf is insane:
“George Bryan. He’s been no where to be found. Part of me wonders if his relationship with Russell has hurt him with Mike. Just saying. You guys think thats possible?”

Just saying — wow … wow … no wonder UNC-CH fans/alumni laugh at us.

NCStatePride: Maybe that’s because some of us are big enough fans to realistically acknowledge and analyze the glaring problems with our football team and still root for them each game they play. Honestly, I don’t even get what you’re hinting at. Are you getting upset that people are rationally stating their observations on our performance 3-games into the season and are basing their expectations on what they’ve seen? Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

If you see that most of these obervations are rational you are delusional. Second of all most of the same people making these rational observations were saying we were going to win 9, 10 and 11 games just weeks ago and now you are giving up. Are these hints enought for you?

Lastly Mista Wolf statement is not talking about timing.

  15. LRM 09/21/2011 at 10:11 PM #

^Not sure exactly what Mista Wolf meant by “relationship,” but if he’s questioning the chemistry between Bryan and Glennon, then I don’t see anything unfair about that at all.

Chemistry and timing are both common, varying factors on a team sport like football, particularly for a QB and his WRs (or in this case, TE).

  16. Wolfy__79 09/21/2011 at 10:20 PM #

who knows why george bryan hasn’t done much this year. i don’t fault him for the play calling.. but i don’t like to see the dropped passes from him.. i just don’t like the amount of mistakes i see from our upper classmen period! our upper classmen should, by this point under TOB or any good coach in year five, be LEADERS period! it’s like night of the living dead out there on both sides of the ball.. and that ain’t cutting it (period). i’m not here to bash fans, players or coaches… TOB has to do a better job. to see nc state fans w/out much emotion at this point in the season is nuts.. WE’RE A VERY PASSIONATE GROUP WIN LOSE OR DRAW.

i think this team can do MUCH better. entering the season i didn’t give us much of a shot, honestly, to win the ACC championship game. …but to face a reality similar to what i’ve seen thus far is light years away from my expectations. dabo sweeney anyone, hell.. who needs a coach who knows what he’s doing (tob) if he doesn’t know wtf he’s doing. i like TOB.. he’s a great guy.. but he’ll get boo’d off the field just like daniel evans did when he was sucking it up. enough is enough!

GO PACK! beat the big yeast!

  17. JSRy2k 09/21/2011 at 11:36 PM #

I’m pretty much w/ baxter: Wait ’til seeing us @UVA to be concerned.

I feel like ACC is all that matters now, and the only ACC game we have for the next month is home vs. GA Tech. We need to get lucky and beat GA Tech, stay healthy, and show improvement until the ACC revs up in Charlottesville a month from now. Looking at it that way doesn’t make our outlook feel so grim.

  18. WolftownVA81 09/21/2011 at 11:41 PM #

I am waiting with great anticipation to see the “leadership” that has taken place over the past week. I’m kind of where I was in year 3 of Lowe BB. I can handle a loss but I better see some real effort in the process (coaches and players). Plan to watch and root for the Pack as always but I have no expectation of winning and be will be pleasantly suprised if we pull it out. This is based on the three previous games. Sorry if that offends some readers.

  19. NCSU@UNCG 09/21/2011 at 11:54 PM #

I’m going out on a limb and predicting a narrow win. Thursday night game’s have treated us well in the past and I expect this one to do the same. We may not have crushed Liberty or USA like UC did for their 2 wins but I wouldn’t be surprised if Liberty or USA would beat Akron or Austin Peay. I don’t believe we need to panic yet. Kick back, enjoy a few brews and cheer for the visitors, 3-1 here we come.

Side note: George Bryan will be fine, he’s a stud.

  20. bTHEredterror 09/22/2011 at 1:36 AM #

I’m not gonna call anybody out for their loyalty, I just see things as far as football is concerned a little differently.

Does the team have some issues? Yep. The question is, as it always is and was against WFU, how do State’s weaknesses (D-line depth, secondary, running game on O) match up against Cincy’s strengths (running game, mobile QB, speed up front on defense, ball security). And how do State’s strengths (passing game, run defense, return teams, turnovers) match up with Cincy’s weaknesses (back 7 on defense, erratic passing game on offense, poor punt team).

    Based on those reasons:

1- I think TJ will be huge in tilting field position on punt returns. Either directly, or indirectly with a below average punter trying to kick away from him. Of course you say, we have to get off the field, but Cincy is erratic in the air, I said.
2-I think Glennon will be effective, and we will have some big plays in the passing game to go along with his regular production. Glennon’s coming out party as it were.
3-Bryan will get back on track to aid in this regard. This is hunch, as there is obviously nothing in his performance yet this year to support. Just three previous years and some small LBs and safeties for the Bearcats.
4-State’s run game will not be spectacular, but it will be effective. Particularly late, as Cincy is small up front.
5-The defense will have some problems with Pead and Co, they are good and will make some plays, maybe even a big play or two. But they will have to do it on the outside. Maddox problems are with pass coverage, not playing the run. Cole is good here as well, and our D-line, though depleted, should be able to clog things up pretty well, with the exception of a few blitz plays.
6-Collaros will make a few scramble plays, and his WRs are reminiscient of Wake’s. But that just means the secondary has seen how to handle smaller quick WRs. They got torched early against Wake, but settled in for the most part late. This is KEY, against the Deacs they hadn’t seen any DI talent yet this season, now they have. Though some of you will no doubt argue this point. This feeds into the turnover advantage.
7-Cincy will not turn the ball over 7 times, but they will give it away at least a couple. They haven’t been dynamic at forcing TOs, even against sub standard opposition. State’s RBs can mess this up of course, but I saw Cincy play UT, they aren’t ball hawks.
8-And that’s what it has been sub-standard competition, Austin Peay:Liberty::Duke:Ohio State. Akron may very well be the worst IA team. UT is better than we are at this point, but looked real pedestrian last week against Florida (granted Florida) but 92 of Cincy’s rush yards against the Vols came on two plays in the first quarter. They were average aside from that, 24 rushes for 78 yards. Their last TD was a 22 yard drive in mop-up after a back-up RB fumbled for UT. UT blew assignments all over the field against Cincy and UF, which of course State will do a couple of times as well. Cincy blew MANY more, as they are likely to again.

I see a pretty even matchup thru the first half, Cincy tough early with a weak home field advantage, and the special teams being huge in the second and third quarters as State’s pulls slightly ahead say 17-14 at half. I see the Pack holding on late for a 1 score win after jumping out 10-17 points in the third. 31-24 your final.

  21. Tuffy2 09/22/2011 at 2:14 AM #

Cincy has 16 returning starters, including nine on defense.

UC leads the nation in takeaways (+13) and is tied for first in turnover margin (4.0 tpg).

Looks like they have their entire defensive unit back minus 2. They might get better as the year goes along on defense. Lets hope it is after our game.

  22. Tuffy2 09/22/2011 at 2:20 AM #

Lets hope we wear all white uniforms as I believe we fare better with them. I do not have stats in front of me to verify this but it just seems that we either win or at least play better with them on. Anyone can verify this for me?

  23. JasonP 09/22/2011 at 8:27 AM #

I can verify that anecdotally for you Tuffy2. We are better with the all whites.

  24. WeAreCured 09/22/2011 at 10:02 AM #

I expect more of the same. Conservative offensive play calling by Bible until it’s too late and the D has spotted Cincy at least a 17 point lead. Wake Forest game repeat. 38-31 Cincy.

  25. Gene 09/22/2011 at 10:04 AM #

“who knows why george bryan hasn’t done much this year. ”

I heard one of the commentators point out he gets double teamed a lot. Teams are probably focusing on him and making the inexperienced WR’s beat them.
