Changes coming at ACC Sports Journal

I just got my latest ACC Sports Journal and in the letter from Editor Dave Glenn he announces that major changes are coming to to the magazine that has been around for 35 years. It sounds like new investors and/owners are coming and Glenn’s role will be reduced and he will focus on his other ventures.

Considering what has been going on in Chapel Hill, I have been waiting for the ACCSJ to provide some of the hard hitting investigative journalism Glenn and the magazine became known for over the years.

What did this issue include? More football previews!!!! Were those not in the last issue?

Maybe the ACCSJ has simply lost its niche? It used to cover stories nobody else in the ACC media would write about. It used to dig deeper into unique and controversial stories than any of its competitors in the local media. It was a “must read” for ACC fans to get the truth on certain topics. State fans will remember the efforts put into the story of Tramain Hall’s adventure to get to NC State and the recruitment of AJ Davis quite well.

Now, we have UNC experiencing the single biggest scandal in the last 25 years of college sports in the state of NC and the ACCSJ has, for the most part, sat on the sidelines.

What a shame.

I used to be a big fan of the ACC sports Journal ten years ago, but I haven’t read it in recent years, they didn’t have much on NCSU worth reading anymore and I agree it seems to have lost its edge.

I used to like Glenn when he came on the radio occasionally to talk about recruiting. Now it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I don’t read the Sports Journal, but it’s pretty telling when the major sports story of the year around here doesn’t get much play. That’s just plain pathetic.

DU – I would offer that those aggressive stories you saw were strictly due to the fact that it was NC State. If this scandal had happened 7 years ago, that rag would have been just as quiet. Glenn has proven he is NOT a man of integrity.

    Next up, John Swofford.

    Please forgive my redundancy.

Looks like there’s some smoke at the ACC Sports Journal.

    … coming out both ends.

My bird now refuses to poop on the Poop Sheet.

At least this ends any illusions of Dave Glenn’s objectivity. He can say whatever in the hell he wants, but the lack of coverage from the ACCJ speaks volumes.

Wait, what? But he knows more about the ACC than you do…..

I want to “want to” listen to him, but his mindless babbling about nothing will damn near put you to sleep.

Sorry DU, but I had to LOL when I read this. I don’t know why anyone that has paid attention to DG over the last 10 years would expect him to say a bad word about the UNC FB program.

He’s gotten so Rome-like with his repeating of the same sentence over and over that it’s tough for me to listen even for the purpose of knowingly letting him rile me up.

In his defense, I have never once had a time slot to fulfill in my daily oral ramblings at work. More times than not, I have a time limit which usually comes to an end when a judge glazes over, rolls her eyes at me, or simply walks off the bench. I’m sure it’s hard to keep conversation going about the same topics for set periods of time.

Nonetheless, I in a North Carolina market, especially one as educated as the Triangle, one would think that his “I know more than you do.”, condescending stick is more of a turn off than anything to most of his potential listeners. He’s not Rome trying to rile of the steel workers in Pittsburgh or some guy driving a cab in Philly or bartender in Boston or a restaurant owner in the lower east side Manhattan.

Most… MOST… folks around here will engage you in learned conversation without steam blowing out of their ears. I’m not sure how after all these years of living down here he hasn’t figured that out.

Another thing we discussed last night is that periodicals like the ACCSJ have essentially become obsolete. The radio heads and the coaches and Sports Information Directors of the world can yuck all they want about “message board monkeys” and “bloggers,” but the truth of the matter is that these are the outlets one goes to now for cutting edge, time-relevant information.

By the time that paper gets to you, it’s all old news even if its writers were investigating prominent news-worthy stories in a timely fashion. I realize he also has ACC.com or whatever the site is that I’ve never once looked at, but that, too, is almost obsolete.

He ABSOLUTELY has developed great relationships throughout the ACC sports world, and no one can question that. However, if his priority is to forever maintain those relationships at the risk of not pursuing touchy stories… then what is he left with? He has no choice but to be a reactionary publication/outlet/voice.

It’s just the reality for him. As a result, talk radio in the long run is his sole future given his obvious business model as it exists today.

Glenn – aka Douche McDouchington Esq.

    Dave Glenn – what a muffin box…

The fact he hired Jim Young (UNC apologist and total tarhole) as the editor of the ACCSJ is enough proof of their agenda.

Hard hitting investigative reporting? – That is a joke.
