Butch Davis Fired (Confirmed!!!) Did 216 phone calls nail the coffin shut?

NBC report on the rumors.

LRM asks: Uh…considering the timing of this (if true), then what on earth changed? To think, if this had been done last summer, the whole thing would’ve largely been forgotton (especially with the issues at Ohio State, Auburn and now Oregon). But now there will undoubtedly be penalties of some sort, and I have to think firing the Chief right now must be part of some attempt by the Flagship for the NCAA to accept lesser, self-imposed penalties.

SFN asks: The timing of this alongside of the scrambling of Butch’s ‘secret phone’ seems very ‘coincidental’. I can’t help but wonder aloud if the information from his 216 phone was very damning in the end? We will see. For more conversation, you can click to this thread in our message forum.

GAWolf asks: Given that the timing is so curious (read: could not be worse for the Heels), could it be that Butch misled the powers that be in Chapel Hill regarding his personal phone “last fall” when Greg Barnes alleges the phone records were reviewed (snicker) by UNC. One can’t help but think that it would be an easy pitch unless someone started putting random phone numbers with names. It’s interesting that on the eve of the release and after Butch allegedly put time into “redacting” these records the school pulls the cord on Butch before the phone records are released.

Mr. Davis: Please, sir, do not go gentle into (this) good night. Sincerely. That would simply be the cherry on top of what has been a pretty spectacular year for us Wolfpackers who have listened to how much better Carolina fans are than we are for our entire lives. That’s all I ask of you. Please go down in a blaze of glory. Tell it all, brother, tell… it… all.

Maybe this will loosen up Marvin and his bag of beans….

Can’t wait to see his first “tweet” regarding this firing!

Well, this just made a not-so-hot Wednesday a whole heck of a lot better! Thanks Butch, we couldn’t have done this without you!

They couldn’t wait two more days?

First, I’ll admit I know nothing about the college football timeline for recruiting and/or transfers. Given that and the local media’s nonstop crowing that if they were going to fire Butch, they’d have done it by now, I wonder if this firing is timed such that it won’t cause players to commit somewhere else or transfer. That’d further damage their chances for next year when they’ve known for ages that the program would be hamstrung enough.

So is this an attempt at damage control? Are they hoping their recruiting would be done? Is it too late for their star recruiting classes of the past few years to transfer away from a tainted husk of a football program? Did they hold off on firing higher-up athletic department employees for the same reason?

NOW, we still need to get to the bottom of the Plagiarism issue. Also at hand is the fact that these student athletes just ‘walk’ through the program at unc, even without knowing their ABC’s.

Don’t you just want somebody to find and interview our “possibly mentally challenged” friend showing off the “I Support Butch” shirt right now? Or is it just me?

    Schadenfreude now, schadenfreude forever!!!!

A question? Who would come and be head coach at a school that is getting ready to have major sanctions dropped upon it?? They should appoint an interim and wait to see how bad they are sanctioned. After the season is over try to hired a head coach. I hear there are some very good high school coaches in Orange county.

The Flagship has sprung a leak……….time suggest that the NCAA is going to come down really hard on the flagship……could not happen to a more deserving group.

When SMU was hit with the death penalty, the players were given an opportunity to transfer without sitting out a year. This may later become useful knowledge.

I say the arrogance of promoting Pittman given his ties to Blake, had to be more than an embarrassment than UNC could stand anymore. That plus Davis making such a big deal at media day about getting so much support. Davis basically was daring them to fire him.

I clicked on this link for Inside Carolina http://northcarolina.scout.com/2/1089825.html
and found an ad for State football minipacks. Perhaps our marketing folks think there might be some folks interested in amatuer college football.

I had hoped he would have stayed. But at least I don’t have to hear a Carolina alum utter the word ‘amphibious’ ever again. I have a trump card for that now.

Probably not related, but anyone think anything about the timing with the NFL striking a deal yesterday. Maybe Butch found an assistant job or one working for an agent he could slip into?

Quote from the “Support Butch Davis” people on Facebook:

“Correct me if I’m wrong here. Isn’t it the Athletic Dept’s job to oversee academics, tutoring services, etc. So you’re telling me this has happened mainly because of the the academic misconduct? Guess what Thorpe and BOT… you fired the wrong guy. Good job.”

    Gotta love Heel fans.
Rumor has it Davis just left Chapel Hill in a white bronco, headed to Texas to cry on Doherty’s shoulder. Both screwed by those they trusted, the Carolina Way!

  21. Pack78 07/27/2011 at 6:10 PM #

Guess this means the Drew Davis verbal is out the window…

  22. highstick 07/27/2011 at 6:12 PM #

I want to correct a post above. The UNC football team does know their ABC’s…That’s where they buy liquor..It’s the E,F,G,H,I’s, and so forth that are the problem!

  23. Tampa-Pack 07/27/2011 at 6:13 PM #

Hope they let Butch keep his tire bowl participation medal….

  24. Tampa-Pack 07/27/2011 at 6:15 PM #

Only question remaining, does this open the flood gates or stop the leak in the boat? Time will tell. Anything to tweet Anchorman? Arrove at any different conclusions guys?

  25. primacyone 07/27/2011 at 6:27 PM #

My sources are saying that after reviewing the 216 phone records it was discovered that 39% was plagiarized and that was the nail in the coffin.
