Chansky: “three other players” with Coples at post-draft party

The hits keep coming!  Today Art Chansky posted this piece, thereby joining the growing media chorus lampooning Butch Davis’ “Sergeant Schultz” act.  This Chansky product would merit examination in its own right — Chansky is very critical of Butch Davis, Dick Baddour, and Holden Thorp.  But in the midst of all that Chansky drops a huge bomb I had not seen before from a legitimate source:

So whether or not Butch Davis knew about the escapades of Marvin Austin, Robert Quinn, Greg Little and, more recently, Quinton Coples and three other players who attended a post-NFL draft party, it does not matter in the eyes of the NCAA.

Whoa Nelly!  Let’s hold on right there and talk about that.  Are we to assume these “three other players” are current UNC-CH football players!? Wow!  This just gets bigger and bigger.  Here is our original entry on the Coples incident if you forget the details.

I think I can speak for everyone and express amazement that the ironclad “sign out sheet” system failed.  Remember, so far, UNC-CH’s only explanation of the Coples incident has been Baddour saying that the sign out sheet system is a work in progress and has had “glitches.”  Seriously!  That sounds like comedy writing but that literally has been their only defense so far.  Read this N & O piece if you don’t believe me.  Not only did Coples somehow outmaneuver Butch’s complex “sign out sheet” scheme, but apparently so did a few other tricky players.

I imagine an exchange UNC-CH might have with the NCAA could go like this:

NCAA: “So you had multiple amateur players traveling to a party that had at least one agent runner in attendance about a year after an almost identical incident rendered Marvin Austin and Greg Little permanently ineligible?  What do you have to say for yourselves?”

UNC-CH:  “Hey, our sign out sheet system is a work in progress and has had glitches.  We would also like to add that Butch knows nothing, everybody does it, and this will all be over by Friday.”

Chansky’s piece from today also got in this surprising shot:

Meanwhile, a chancellor who seemed to have the right perspective when all this started has instead fallen into “lockstep” with the athletic department and Trustees in what now looks like a growing game of dodge ball. No more documents, phone records or parking tickets flowing to the media under the Freedom of Information Act until all appeals are exhausted.

If you are like me and don’t really know who Art Chansky is, you can read this entry from last December that covers Chansky’s exit from Tar Heel Sports Properties, whatever that is.  It seems Chansky may have been forced out after the discovery of an email he wrote that was vaguely critical of Butch Davis and went on to anticipate a search for Butch’s replacement.  Chansky has written some books about UNC-CH sports and apparently is (or was) a pretty big wheel in the UNC-CH cracker factory, so this type of criticism is very significant coming from him.

Who are the other 3 players? Man I am truly salivating at the mouth now.

  2. tractor57 05/27/2011 at 9:29 PM #

Seems like UNX is determined to stick a finger in the NCAA’s eye.

With the “sign out sheet” one would think the excuse “I didn’t know” doesn’t fly anymore.

  3. backnine 05/27/2011 at 9:43 PM #

Indeed this piece of writing is significant. The content is all spot on but for me its the source that makes it hit especially hard. Chansky is an institution over there who was chased off because he was caught not toe’ing the company line. He dared to consider that Butch was taking the program – and the university community – over a cliff. So he had to go.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t still write or that he doesn’t still have a significant voice. He does. And now he’s using it. I suspect the latest with Coples and the “mystery three” have moved him to act, fearing things have spiraled out of control. This is a sign that what’s left of the “old guard” have decided they can be silent no longer.

Though I’m sure it was a bit painful for Art to write that article and say what he did, he must feel compelled to do so, thinking, “its come to this.” There could now be a “behind closed doors” war going on within the ranks between the “old guard” who value UNC’s long standing station in the world and those who have gone “all in” for big-time college football. We know the “three amigos” are in the latter, led by Prince Tassle Loafer, as Bob Lee Swaggart calls him (love that!).

The question for me after reading that is, “will the local news media now decide to wade into the pool?” Or, do they continue to look like impotent fools who aren’t man enough to ask obvious questions and actually, ahem, do their jobs. The ESPN article from Heather Dinich was a hard shot and equally spot on. The Sports Illustrated article interpreting the meaning of USC’s appeal being denied was another pearl of wisdom on where UNC is headed. And now an old school Tar Heel “sage” has seen fit to “call them out.” Interesting few days indeed – and may signal that the wind has indeed changed direction. Hark the sound!!

The sign-out sheet thing could actually help Butch. He can say he tried, but his players are bent on getting around the rules, and what can he do about that?

We all know it’s no excuse, but that’s how they will surely spin it.

  5. notvery 05/27/2011 at 10:02 PM #

Not sure how much influence Chansky has.

  6. notvery 05/27/2011 at 10:04 PM #

Also, is it really a “mystery” who the three players are?

  7. Packfanatik 05/27/2011 at 10:12 PM #

If players side stepped the sign-out sheet, aka lied about where they were going, then those players should have been shown the door. I can’t see ‘a work in progress’ as a valid excuse. Clearly a Lack Of Institutional Control – where control is making penalties so bad you don’t do the deed.

  8. State Fan 05/27/2011 at 10:23 PM #

There’s all kinds of blame to go around here. Is UNC’s NCAA rules compliance office staffed by the 3 Stooges? This story is the gift that keeps on giving to all of us ABC fans.

  9. PackMan97 05/27/2011 at 11:17 PM #

@bradleyb123, not really. That sounds like “lack of institutional control” and “failure to create a culture of compliance”, both things the NCAA frowns upon.

  10. bTHEredterror 05/27/2011 at 11:28 PM #

Im guessing Dwight Jones, Riddick, and a nameless DT.

  11. packalum44 05/27/2011 at 11:32 PM #

There are others who can speak with more certainty to this, but I believe Coples was one of the more heralded recruits from Hargrace who was paid good money by Butch and company. Leon Mackey’s parents tried to get the same “deal” Coples was offered…

[Chansky] This poll comes down to the question of reputation and integrity. [/Chansky]

Awesome, Thanks goodness someone ‘associated’ with UNC gets it.

[Chansky] Ironically, UNC remains under investigation after opening its doors to the snoop dogs, while schools from the SEC make it harder for the NCAA to come on their campuses than flushing out bin Laden. [/Chansky]

    Awesome, UNC is still… Wait, Ironically… ?!?!?

[Chansky] We said, “Sure talk to our players, check out their emails, we have nothing to hide.” And we obviously did not properly prep those players on what to say, so some of them lied to the NCAA, the ultimate no-no. [\Chansky]

I see, their biggest guilt is that they don’t lie well enough to be considered ‘big time’ football.

WAKE THE FLIP UP!!! You don’t play well enough to be considered big time football either. Defending all this to be a LOSER, that’s awesome.

The flux capaciter must be broken, “Damm, Damm Damm”. Guess we will have to get the ACC to build a new sign out sheet. Make it better and stronger.

  14. golf76 05/28/2011 at 7:44 AM #

The NCAA is being made a fool by UNC. Perhaps the integrity issue is there as well.

Ever observe a Weyerhauser plant or a Menhaden plant in full operation? Things are fine until the wind switches direction and you find yourself downwind. I fully believe things have been rotten in Chapel Hell for a very long, long time. This Butch Davis era will certainly be remembered as a terrible blight to the ACC as a whole… And that my friends is how this era will reflect and record in history The Carolina Way..

  16. BJD95 05/28/2011 at 8:57 AM #

The funniest thing is – I could understand doing this to preserve a cash cow like their hoops program, or a coach like Ol’ Roy. But really…Butch Davis isn’t that good. And Hole Nation barely cared about football even during their best period.

It’s not just that they’re dirty. I get that. But they’re basically shooting themselves in the head to try to cure a minor headache.

Not that I’m complaining. This is fucking hilarious.

  17. Old MacDonald 05/28/2011 at 11:48 AM #

BJD: I think UNC went “all in” before they knew what they were getting into. By the time they realized what was really going on, Dickie and Thorp were chained to Butch. At that point it was too late to throw Butch overboard. Butch’s pals on the BOT/BOG did enough at that early crucial stage to convince Erskine to back Butch. Remember that presser with Erskine standing behind Dickie and Thorp saying how proud he was of them and Butch? In that instant this thing became a much, much bigger problem for them. I believe that if they knew then what they knew now, they never would have thrown in with Butch. Butch would have been replaced, and the UNC “healing process” would be well underway. MUCH better for us the way it played out.

  18. tann84 05/28/2011 at 12:00 PM #

You’re right BJD. Most of my friends who are UNC fans don’t even care about this. They’re convinced that its ok because ‘everyone’ is doing it and as long as they win 8 games a year and go to a bowl game they’re happy. I guess they just think the NCAA isn’t going to do anything and I understand why, when has the NCAA ever done anything to UNX? Lets face it the NCAA is just as corrupt and dirty as UNX is. But that they that justifies their actions.

All for a ‘chance’ to win the ACC title every 4 years. Its pathetic. Look at USC, they cheated and got a National Championship out of it, a down right dynasty almost. If you compare that to UNC then how is it worth it? Especially if this stuff keeps up, you would think they would get hammered almost as bad as USC. The sad thing is that USC fired their AD, their chancellor, and their football coach left before he could get fired. UNC and Ohio State are sticking by their coaches. Joe Ovies was talking about how Tressell should get a show-cause. Butch hasn’t had his emails exposed yet because UnC is withholding all the information until the appeals process is through. If they’re isn’t anything incriminating in those emails then why are they doing everything they can to keep them buried? It only make sense that Buticies emails have the same type of emails that Tressell’s had. The fact that he knew, and after a year of ‘I didn’t know’ you would think if the Ovies is calling for tressell to get a show-cause, shouldn’t butchie too?

This might be the perfect storm, not only UNC gets hammered but the local media will be exposed to the nation for their bias too. How Davis isn’t being called out and people like Ovies wondering what is in those emails is beyond me. In fact this is why UNC fans believe that nothing will happen to their program and that everything is ok. Radio host like Ovies should at least withhold their opinion until all the information is exposed, if it comes out that Davis did know, which he did, then how do you spin that?

They should have given Chansky a “$75,000 handshake” like they gave Santa.

  20. Wolfman 9806 05/28/2011 at 12:52 PM #

This whole situation makes even happier that Amato and Fowler are in our rear view mirror as well. Those tow always made me nervous with regard to using the rules as a suggested guideline rather than a requirement.

As far as UNC goes, the saddest part is that one day this story will end. Until then, let the hits keep coming.

  21. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 05/28/2011 at 1:38 PM #

Whose job is it to investigate the NCAA? Or does this organization, that is funded from the profits of mostly public institutions, free from oversight.

I ask this because there seems to be little consistency on how the NCAA hands out penalties. A lack of consistency, indicates favoritism or corruptions.

Ohio State is allowed to play 5 suspended players in Sugar Bowl for violations that occurred in college.

Baylor loses star basketball player from Big 12 basketball tournament for a violation that occurred in HS.

    http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/on-the-n-c-a-a-benching-of-perry-jones/

If there is no group that oversees the NCAA, someone better start figuring out how to bring the NCAA to court without suffering additional “payback” penalties.

    tann84,

You’re right on. The old “everybody is doing it” didn’t work for the Valvano sneaker sales “scandal”. The N&O and Charlotte Observer helped make sure of that. Even though that was a long time ago, the same media UNC-buttkissing still exists today. What a racket they have going.

I won’t let myself get my hopes up, even though it could be said that this UNC multi-pronged scandal dwarfs the Valvano thing. The “flagship” mafia has done a masterful job of placing their influence in powerful places (like ACC commiss) so that they don’t have to answer like the rest of the ACC for their actions

The silence of the UNC “troubles” has been deafening, compared to the World War II type of headlines during the Valvano “scandal”. It sickens me how the national media has been afraid to touch it (not enough Heather Dinich’s). But I’m not surprised – look how they jump all over the NCSU aspirations for a good basketball coach.

  24. Wolfy__79 05/28/2011 at 5:15 PM #

so it’s pretty safe to assume coples is out and possibly a couple other dudes? and if there is another DL in this picture.. let’s just scratch all the talent off of the defense! so at worst, this is what i see.. 3-4 player suspensions if not kicked off the team.. that’s what unc will do! now what will the ncaa’s do?

  25. Wolfy__79 05/28/2011 at 5:21 PM #

look at that watch on his arm!! these players are idiots or don’t give two sheets about unc-ch
