Iowa starting PG to transfer to State?

Is new NC State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried already making waves nationally?

Cully Payne was the starting PG at Iowa before suffering a season ending injury. Yesterday morning, Payne was released from his scholarship and announced plans to transfer.

Payne is a Chicago guy, putting Illinois-Chicago, Loyola, and Northern Illinois in the mix of possible landing spots. However, the 21 year old said something that I took note of, “The guy I’d love to play for just got a job today”.

Do what? Now, I don’t watch ESPN 24/7, actually, not even 1/7 because I choose to be frugal and not spend money on cable or satellite, but back to the point, I am pretty sure we had the only NCAA college basketball Head Coach hire on Tuesday.  He goes on to say, “I can’t really say too much about that, but that would definitely be [a] place I’d look at”.

So, who is this Cully Payne? How good is he? What type of character does he have? And can he contribute to the Wolfpack basketball program? I guess those are questions that new NCSU coach Gottfried may be asking this week.

Lowe was obsessed with recruiting point guards. We don’t need another one. We need quality big men.

“Lowe was obsessed with recruiting point guards. We don’t need another one. We need quality big men.”

Yet we only have one quality point?

  3. JEOH2 04/06/2011 at 10:38 AM #

    Stand Up and Howl,

So your implication is that Hickson, T. Smith, and Richard Howell…weren’t quality big men…

how many good/great point guards did Lowe recruit in 5 years?

  4. tobaccordshow 04/06/2011 at 10:38 AM #

Yeah not sure what StandUpAndHowl means by that… he might’ve recruited one, but in his 5 years, he had one quality PG that he recruited and he only had him for a season.

Haters being haters. Why can’t you let us eternally optimistic Wolfpack fans enjoy this week?

    LoL @ BAM…

    ‘BAM Says:

I like that he’s left handed. Always been my perception that lefty PGs have an inherit advantage.’

That’s because you’re left handed ya goofball! Granted, it always made you hard as hell to guard… not used to going to my right at all… grr…

  9. mafpack 04/06/2011 at 11:52 AM #

The Harrow quote is fantastic, I would absolutely LOVE for Ryan to stay here, grow/mature and see what he can do in an offense that won 10 national championships in 12 years… (granted that was 30 years ago, haha)…

Even so, stay Ryan stay, we love you dude!

^“Not to burst anyone’s bubble here but Pat Knight was hired at Lamar yesterday.”

Apparently, you missed the part of the above text that said “Released from letter of intent to Alabama in March ’09 following coaching change”. Or maybe you can’t put 2 and 2 together and figure out that Mark Gottfried is the coach referenced in that statement.

Dude chill. It was a joke.

We are “assuming” he is transferring to State? He hasn’t said anything official yet right? Lets not jump to quickly at assumptions, even with most of the signs pointing States way.

  12. PackInsider 04/06/2011 at 12:46 PM #

What’s his reasoning for transferring out of Iowa?

  13. BAM 04/06/2011 at 12:49 PM #

“Dude chill. It was a joke”

Dude chill accepted. Your initial sarcasm was lost as tone is very difficult to convey with simple text.

MAFPACK, yeah, my only game is the lefty crossover. That and hard fouls.

I hope Cully comes and Harrow stays.

I also hope that NC State can find a place for Towe. If not on the bench in the athletic department if he wants it.

Towe gave up the HC job at New Orleans to come back to State. He has a long history as a player and coach and stayed when Lowe left at Yow’s request. It would be very unfortunate for State to throw him out at this stage in his career.

I have no idea what MT wants to do if is not on MG staff but I hope State helps to make sure he lands on his feet. It didn’t sound too good when Yow said it would be up to MG to bring the Towe situation to a “conclusion”- I think that was the word she used in the press conference.

What’s our scholarship situation look like?

I found this while looking to see Utah ended up with…

From April 2nd about Gottfried maybe going to Utah-

Though here is an interesting tidbit pulled off Twitter:

Jim Harrick former UCLA HC enjoying convention with former assistant Mark Gottfried, former UCLA HC Larry Farmer now assist at Central Mich

Could Gottfried already be putting a staff together here at Utah?

  17. BAM 04/06/2011 at 1:21 PM #

I just talked with Cully Payne, he called Mark Gottfried “Coach G” lol

  18. motorhead 04/06/2011 at 1:39 PM #

Regardless of whether Cully comes, it is a very positive step that he even mentioned him as part of the ix. I suspect he’ll want to be closer to home, but who knows.

And yes, he was close to being hired at Utah, so we’re not the only ones that think he’s got something to offer. The Utes were pretty good under Majerus in the 90s, making a final four (and beating UNC) to get there.

just curious. I know Jaqawn Raymond has a verbal commitment to be here next year, would there be room for both of these guys?

  20. BAM 04/06/2011 at 2:57 PM #

It seems that if EVERYONE stays that is 11 scholarship players (including the 3 commits). However, I do not expect ALL 11 to be here in the Fall.

  21. tann84 04/06/2011 at 4:23 PM #

I expect the majority of players to stay. Harrow is the only real question mark to me.

Brown-has already said he is staying

Harrow-Is really close to Brown so I think Brown will convince him to stay that and the fact he’ll get a lot of playing time but I think if anyone leaves it’s him

CJL-Doubt he is leaving, think about it, he isn’t going to the NBA now – his draft stock will be much higher next year- and transferring will force him to sit out a year hurting his stock, he’s staying in my opinion.

Painter/Howell/Vandy – Will get a lot of playing time next year, no incentive to leave at all

Wood/CJ Williams – It would take a lot to get these guys to transfer, I believe these guys love NCSU and will finish their career here

As far as incoming recruits go, I have no idea.

  22. Gene 04/06/2011 at 5:15 PM #

If this is true this is GREAT NEWS! Assuming Harrow stays, who else do we have at the PG position? Brown in spot duty, with CJ Williams or Wood as SG?

If this is true and he’s fit to play, this is GREAT NEWS and IMMEDIATELY fills a need for us next year.

  23. BAM 04/06/2011 at 5:24 PM #

Source told me Cully should/could be making his decision tonight. Source did not tell me, but I think that means he will be on the phone with Coach G tonight and make the decision.

  24. PoppaJohn 04/06/2011 at 6:19 PM #

    Whoa – whoa – whoa
Too good to be true, I’m not falling for it!!!!!!

    I fell for:
Rick Barnes was in Raleigh to talk about the job
Sean Miller was all locked up
Billy Donovan was in Raleigh and had signed
Shaka was ours for the taking
Marshall was locked up, that’s why Shaka & the Colon backed off.
DY knows what she is doing

I’m sticking with the true Wolfpacker philosophy … “if we get him it’s because he sucks and he will never recover from that injury” … until proven otherwise.
