Iowa starting PG to transfer to State?

Is new NC State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried already making waves nationally?

Cully Payne was the starting PG at Iowa before suffering a season ending injury. Yesterday morning, Payne was released from his scholarship and announced plans to transfer.

Payne is a Chicago guy, putting Illinois-Chicago, Loyola, and Northern Illinois in the mix of possible landing spots. However, the 21 year old said something that I took note of, “The guy I’d love to play for just got a job today”.

Do what? Now, I don’t watch ESPN 24/7, actually, not even 1/7 because I choose to be frugal and not spend money on cable or satellite, but back to the point, I am pretty sure we had the only NCAA college basketball Head Coach hire on Tuesday.  He goes on to say, “I can’t really say too much about that, but that would definitely be [a] place I’d look at”.

So, who is this Cully Payne? How good is he? What type of character does he have? And can he contribute to the Wolfpack basketball program? I guess those are questions that new NCSU coach Gottfried may be asking this week.

Another Degand? Degand scored in double digits only 5 times his Sr season, and the top was 13. This fella scored 25 against Michigan as a Freshman.

He’d have to sit out next year and come in with 2 to play 2, right?

  9. SandhillsWolf 04/06/2011 at 9:39 AM #

    said he got a med redshirt…maybe 3?

  10. Boyd 04/06/2011 at 9:41 AM #

^^That’s what I was thinking. Sat out all of last year, would be able to play immediately.

“….“The guy I’d love to play for just got a job today — I can’t really say too much about that, but that would definitely be [a] place I’d look at,” Payne said.

That coach might be Mark Gottfried, who was hired by North Carolina State on Tuesday and who recruited Payne when the former was at Alabama. Prior to deciding on Iowa, Payne committed to play for the Crimson Tide but asked out of his letter after Gottfried resigned midway through the 2008-09 season….”

I don’t care if he’s the 13th guy on the bench. That’s an impressive statement regarding Mark Gottfried if that is whom he was referring.

First piece of good news this week. At this point, I am ready to optimistically focus on what happens on the court and forget the last four weeks (and maybe the last five or twenty years)

Not to burst anyone’s bubble here but Pat Knight was hired at Lamar yesterday.

Come on down to Raleigh Mr. Payne! We’d love to have ya!

My thoughts exactly, primacyone. Speaks volumes…

Apparently, you missed the part of the above text that said “Released from letter of intent to Alabama in March ’09 following coaching change”. Or maybe you can’t put 2 and 2 together and figure out that Mark Gottfried is the coach referenced in that statement.

    Howler-
I completely agree 100%. Forget the past few weeks and focus on the future.
I admit the “out-of-left-field” hire stunned me a little bit but I was impressed with Gottfried at the presser and after some research last night I am good with it. If he assembles the staff I’m hoping for then we will be pretty good pretty soon.
So with that said…this thread does nothing but excite me. And thanks Rochester and SandhillsWolf for the excellent links. An athlete makes national news by saying he wants to transfer to NC State BECAUSE of our NEW COACH.
Let’s marinate on that a little bit. Good karma is coming back.

I like that he’s left handed. Always been my perception that lefty PGs have an inherit advantage.

This worries me with the Harrow rumors floating around.

Oozes poise and confidence as a freshman. Impressive.

Bladen, well put. That is some positive PR for us after a few weeks of bashing, as well as something positive for our new coach, within a few hours of him being announced. The fact that he made enough of an impression on this player to consider following the coach leads me to believe he’ll be a good recruiter for us.

wake up me when a burger boy transfers *snore*

just kidding guys. didn’t know if you could tell.

something positive and hope more positive things develop, ….like a coaching staff that will teach defense!

On top of that, he’s had 2 solid years of watching High School kids play. He’s been a recruiting analyst for ESPN for the past 2.5 years. I love the hire, and I’m going to support it until he gives me a reason not to.
