Get to know Coach Gottfried

Great ten minutes of conversation here.

Coach G comes off as calm, yet energetic. Cool, yet competent and confident. He’s ready to fight and prove to the world that he’s learned from his mistakes.

Rochester: I almost posted the EXACT same thing about the Parker search firm. I held back because maybe they helped keep things quieter than we know, but from the outside looking in they didn’t inspire a lot of confidence. If Miami’s search goes down like ours, then I have to think that Parker’s reputation will suffer.

  3. old13 04/14/2011 at 9:39 AM #

In all fairness to Parker, I believe that all they do in any search is act as a third party to keep things quiet, serving as a contact point for interested people and funneling information between the parties. The schools pick who among the interested people they want to interview/offer. IMO it’s the biased speculating (read: mostly lies) by the media trying to sell newspapers that paint a poor picture of the searches. In reality, the only ones who know what really happens are the schools (ADs) and the search firm.

As for MG, I am most happy with the hire and look forward to the season.

    Debbie Yow = missile launcher

loved his reaction to what seems to be an ongoing question about DY!
and he’s right on… and i’m glad we have a competitor in DY!

of course we won’t know until we see our guys on the floor.. but the feeling i get from MG is a confident one.. i think we have the best hire of the season for sure… who knows, it could be one of the best in nc state history!?!

..i like his stance on recruiting.. i don’t hear many coaches say they are going to start here and also look nationally.. alot of times i hear just getting good recruits but don’t describe the backbone involved in nc recruiting.

  5. Wolfy__79 04/14/2011 at 10:15 AM #

I also like that both MG and TOB state the importance of in state recruiting!

  6. TOBtime 04/14/2011 at 10:31 AM #

I wanted a guy to “come in here blowing steam” and we seem to have just that! You just have to love the confidence. He’s not brash, just confident. And why not? Coach Mark has been to the top so he has seen what it takes to get there. When TOB came I said not to underestimate the quiet, unassuming guy. I feel the same about Coach Mark.
    Can’t WAIT for basketball!

Good stuff. Nothing not to like about that interview. I for one will be relaxed about the basketball offseason and looking forward to what we’re able to put on the court in the fall.

The good karma continues. The Power shift is moving forward and making the rest a little nervous.

As an unknown quantity, I had my doubts initially. After much research and reflection and reading/listening to several interviews with Coach G, I am very confident we will be a good team this season.

It will be fun to watch the media try to reverse it’s course on this one.

Love the Kool-Aid comment ZZ. I’ve been swigging from the pitcher myself. OH Yeah!

    DUUUUUUUUUUDE. That interview was awesome!

I am fired up to see how bball unfolds after hiring MG.

  10. Hungwolf 04/14/2011 at 1:26 PM #

Word is we have come to terms with Rob Moxley as our third asst bball coach.

“Haven’t watched yet, but one thing I have really worried about was the 2012 recruiting class. Why was Sid handing out next year’s scholarships to mediocre players?? He had to know he was leaving.”

Is there a reason why you would call the commitments for 2012 “mediocre”? Those who have seen these players might disagree with you.

While Coach Lowe could have known that not being retained was a possibility, he still needed to do the job he was hired to do until he was no longer employed. And because of that the transition will be much better than the last transition.

  12. Wolfy__79 04/14/2011 at 4:59 PM #

2012 commits = one sick unselfish pg + a forward with range needing only size and work from back facing the basket!

i don’t see any problem with these two!

  13. PoppaJohn 04/14/2011 at 4:59 PM #

Moxley is locked in! It’s weird they have the UNC-C background, but this guy sounds really strong. I’m trying to reign it in, but the excitement is starting to build.

  14. ChiefJoJo 04/14/2011 at 6:01 PM #

Great interview. When I heard his name, I was surprised we got someone who had never been mentioned in the search process. I don’t overreact much so I tried to look at his track record rather than pay attention to the media reports, and I thought he was being under-appreciated and undervalued. There’s a long way to go before we know whether it was a good one, but I am feeling better and better about the hire.

    hball57 & wolfy_79:
Perhaps you’re more adept at spotting talent than Telep, but all I know is what I read. We now have 4 ace recruiters, I’d like to think they can do better than this guy.

“Dave Telep, ESPN’s senior-college basketball analyst, does not have Mikulic ranked among his top junior prospects and said he thinks Mikulic will need time to build his skills.”

“He’s a long-term guy,” Telep said. “I think he can run a little bit and has a good touch, but he’s thin. I think he’s a guy you kind of have to sit on for a few years and let him develop. He’s not a guy that he comes in and you expect him to play as a freshman.”

  16. wolfpackdawg 04/14/2011 at 8:54 PM #

He’s slick. I hope he’s not a snake oil salesman.

  17. Wolfy__79 04/14/2011 at 9:29 PM #

sure, they may have areas to improve but so do our current players. it’s not so bad to have guys that will be around for a few years imo. i would like to see some blue chippers mixed in but i think there’s importance in developing players as well.

Cant seem to find info on the mistakes he made in the past. Are the rumors true about him nailing a coed on the side at Bama?

  20. ADVENTUROO 04/14/2011 at 10:52 PM #

    Bubba,

The CoED Rumor, which many have requested NOT be discussed here has NO basis. Several of us have spent a LOT of time trying to chase down the source. There is no substaniation, nor is there any credible HINT of it. Usually you can find some corroborating comments or info. THERE IS NONE.

His wife seems like a great woman….and is about his height. She has also called a radio show to “straighten out” the facts. She seems as outspoken as Debbie Yow. If Mark was involved with a CoED, I THINK that she would have removed essential pieces of his manhood in a manner that makes cringe as I type this.

The only reference was on a far out board where supposedly an Ex High School cheerleader, who “made the team….including the third string…” was the subject of “Gee….I wonder why Gottfried resigned….maybe he got caught with old Whatshername….she has been with about everyone on campus, so she might be working her way into the coaches….”. That was the extent of it….

  21. yukuntz 04/15/2011 at 7:35 AM #

Things are looking good to me as well! I think most of the bad mouthing you hear is coming from frustrated bama fans who wish MG was still there.
I also don’t buy that crap the MG called Woods up trying to get him to transfer to Wake the day after Skip passed away.

  22. nycfan 04/15/2011 at 9:40 AM #

One key that I expect you’ll start hearing about during summer school if not sooner is a more organized off-season conditioning regimen for the current team … one of the consistent knocks on Gottfried at Bama was lack of consistent player development BUT I still expect a major upgrade in program management from your prior regime, especially conditioning and off-season drills.

  23. Wolfy__79 04/15/2011 at 9:48 AM #

from what i’ve read i hear alot of praise from a few bama folks and former players.. of course, i’m not one to key on negative things. the past mistakes from what i’ve learned are from the coaching aspect of the game and that’s it.. i don’t think a man in his position would dwell on rumors of any sort as a mistake in public.

what MG has in nc state is a not a sec football school, we fully support our basketball program as fans, straight from the bull in the china shop and fah-cilities, …etc. he’s referenced not having that kind of support at bama.. heck, he’s taking ownership time and time again of his past mistakes.

i’m curious as to why an nc state fan would want to dig up or maybe even fabricate any kind of rumor slandering the coach?.. don’t we get enough of this already from the tarhole media?

  24. Wolfy__79 04/15/2011 at 9:51 AM #

    get ready:

    “you can’t handle the truth”

oh well, i hate to say it but… our basketball players hopefully were and not are way out of major college basketball shape! it wasn’t even close imo..

  25. Bubba 04/15/2011 at 11:03 AM #

I wasnt fabricating a rumor slandering our coach. I just had heard that he was caught boning a coed from a friend that lives down in Bama and was wondering if anyone had proof in an old news article somewhere. Personally, I dont care if it is true or not. Folks make mistakes. Just go win enough games to get us back in the dance or at least back to bubble status.
