Butch says “We told the truth” (with a straight face apparently)

With the NFL Draft starting tomorrow, there has been an increase in the coverage of the UNC-CH scandals.  Butch seems to be on a publicity tour on behalf of the players involved in the improper benefits and/or academic misconduct scandals.  Today’s News and Record has several interesting quotes from Butch.  The one that really stuck out to me:

“I know how honestly we handled it. We had three players who lost their eligibility. Instantly, as soon as it was declared they had unethical conduct and were not forthright and had not told the truth, we separated ourselves from them. That’s as much as you can do as an institution.”

Let’s look at that.  I know what you are thinking — according to Butch wasn’t Marvin supposedly working his way back onto the team last fall?  Yes he was!  Check out this WRAL piece  from last September 20th, which contains this cool quote:

Marvin Austin remains suspended but Davis said there is still a possibility he may return.

“I obviously have optimism,” Davis said. “He’s working his way to get back on the practice field.”

So today Butch says that Marvin was “instantly…separated” but last September 20th Butch’s story was that Marvin was “working his way to get back on the practice field” and Butch “obviously” had “optimism” about Marvin returning to the program?  I don’t see how today’s statement from Butch can possibly be considered consistent with his September 20th statement.

Furthermore, as you can see here, Butch and UNC-CH apparently had no trouble allowing Austin, Quinn, and Little back to the UNC-CH football facilites for their hilariously-named “Pro Day.”  I don’t see the separation.  In this piece, Baddour talks about letting the “separated” Austin, Quinn, and Little come back for “Pro Day.”

***********

I am going to use the rest of this entry to run some UNC-CH scandal material that broke during our coach search and therefore did not get run.  So it is a little old but has not been covered here yet.  This stuff will be presented in “bytes” format.

UNC-CH cornerback Charles Brown has to sit out their opener next year:

Brown accepted benefits in the amount of $86.94 before the 2010 season from an individual identified as a prospective agent. The Tar Heels held him out of competition to start last season, and Brown was officially ruled out for the year on Oct. 20.

Sitting Brown for the James Madison game shows that they really mean business over there.

***********

UNC-CH defensive end Linwan Euwall has left UNC-CH.  He was wrapped up in the scandals somehow, although I forget in which prong(s). From the article linked above for the Brown information:

In other North Carolina football news, the school announced that defensive end Linwan Euwell has left school. He played in five games last season and was held out of the first five games in connection with the investigation.

************

Butch says that the penalized players cried in the stands last year during games.  From that article, we also get some news on McAdoo:

Rising senior defensive end Michael McAdoo was ruled permanently ineligible and will not be reinstated to play for his last season.

According to this, however, Team McAdoo is appealing the matter and is prepared to take the NCAA to court if necessary.  Alert readers might notice the seemingly disproportional representation of UNC-CH defensive linemen in the scandals.  Just off the top of my head, we have Austin, Quinn, McAdoo, and Euwell never playing at UNC-CH again.

***********

Lastly, on April 10th Ed Hardin wrote this piece that made some great points, including:

College football is broken now, and the people who broke it are going to have to fix it. Can they be trusted to do it? Or are they the problem?

and

Agents are on the sidelines. Runners are in the classrooms. Boosters are in the pockets of the players. Coaches are lying to the media and the NCAA.

Almost every day you hear solutions. Pay the players. Institute a playoff system. Name a commissioner of college football. Make freshmen ineligible.

Here’s a better solution. Just fire Jim Tressel. Just fire Butch Davis. Just send John Junker to prison and wipe the Fiesta Bowl from the face of the earth. What happened to accountability?

Wow!

In order to have that big of a mess, you are either hiding (aka lying) or simply incompetent. I guess that makes Butch incompetent. Congrats UNC.

  2. MrPack12 04/27/2011 at 8:52 PM #

Butch Davis is both incompetent and a liar.

  3. ruffles31 04/27/2011 at 10:05 PM #

When you are a liar, you have to cover up a lie with another…bigger lie. Eventually, the lies get too big to believe.

Butchie, I think you are there.

The emails and phone records, I believe, will throw this situation into the same sphere or worse as Tressell’s. If and when we get that entire picture, all evidence points to that being the smoking gun that Butch’s purported ignorance is a sham.

TVP: the ad is legit I think.

The other night I heard Robert Smith(former Ohio State and Minn. Viking running back) on ESPN Radio. He was very upset with Tressel for the lying and the cheating. He then sang Butch’s praises for holding out any players who might possibly be ineligible so that the season would not be ruined for the definitely eligible players and the fans. He said nothing of the diffused corruption of the UNX football program. I sure hope the NCAA does not think like this guy when it is time for the guillotine to drop.

here is the actual video of Butch being interviewed by the NCAA

Isn’t it the old adage if you keep lying then it becomes truth….?

  15. packof81 04/28/2011 at 8:42 AM #

Well UNC hasn’t fired Butch and it doesn’t appear that the NCAA is going to do anything more about this. If they are, I don’t understand what they are waiting for.

I’ve posted this before, but it still remains relevant, especially now…

    http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2001/writing/over250.columns.fourth1.html

The big lie started each morning when Butch Davis entered his office, telling worried assistants he was staying, promising worried school officials the new contract just needed to be signed and scoffing at any media who asked about his future – usually after he was caught flirting over a job somewhere else.

In his final hours at the University of Miami, the football coach pulled off the liars’ Triple Crown: Lying to athletic director Paul Dee that he wasn’t going anywhere; lying to assistants by mapping out his week’s recruiting itinerary; and lying in the face of high school recruits making their official visit.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/web/COM1036134/index.htm

“Guys just didn’t trust him, point blank,” one Browns player told me Tuesday morning, just hours after Davis’ departure became official. “With any coach, you have to buy into what the guy’s selling. You have to believe in him, no matter what. That’s essential. And we never bought into Butch. I never saw any trust coming from the players, because we knew he was full of [crap]. Guys had just tuned him out a long time ago.”

    …and…

“You can tell he’s lying, because his lips are moving,” said the player, who is no longer with Cleveland. “That’s how guys feel about him. You can’t trust what he says.”

    Butch. Liar. Period.

Man I hope they keep Butch forever. I hope Carolina burns for all that they have done, but I hope he keeps his job (though very unlikely). I actually kind of like him, he did a good job at Miami. He just screwed up by going to UNC. And I especially like his 0-4 record against the Pack. Hell I will contribute toward a contract extension, anybody else want in?

  18. section2chuck 04/28/2011 at 9:55 AM #

No, the ad is legit, I have seen it in Carolina game programs, and UNC ads…..

  19. packof81 04/28/2011 at 10:17 AM #

“No, the ad is legit, I have seen it in Carolina game programs, and UNC ads….”

    Wow.

I also thought it was spoofed.

    It’s surreal.

  20. Old MacDonald 04/28/2011 at 10:48 AM #

How funny is it that people can’t tell a spoofed Butch picture from a real one?

  21. Wolfy__79 04/28/2011 at 11:02 AM #

right now.. i’m at the point that i don’t really care what happens to unc-ch “footbal?” but, i am becoming bmfd’s and tressel’s biggest fan.. it’s almost as if they are running a race.. the more tressel gets his mess pulled into the public eye, the more of a blackened eye the ncaas gets!! please keep piling this mess on, it gives me more hope that if more wrong doing is uncovered.. the more the ncaas are willing to take the gloves off!! drop that hammer baby!!

  22. PackerInRussia 04/28/2011 at 12:12 PM #

“That ad for the watch is a parody/photoshop, right? I honestly cannot tell at this point.”

If it were anyone other than UNC, it would be a parody. Same goes with the Marvin Austin one (that is real, right?). Their whole football program has become a parody.

  23. WolftownVA81 04/28/2011 at 12:23 PM #

They have to keep Butch. If they fire him now, they also have to fire the AD and Chancellor.

  24. goforit 04/28/2011 at 12:53 PM #

“No, the ad is legit, I have seen it in Carolina game programs, and UNC ads…..”

I thought it was against NCAA rules for athletes to be in ads.

  25. MP 04/28/2011 at 12:55 PM #

“If they fire him now, they also have to fire the AD and Chancellor.”

And they will DEFINITELY have to fire their advertising agency.
