Since it isn’t at “2PM”, should we believe that this is the real deal

  2. tann84 04/05/2011 at 2:09 PM #

I’m just glad they got someone, the next step might have been to have open auditions.

  3. Daily Update 04/05/2011 at 2:09 PM #

All signs saying this is the real deal.

  4. Daily Update 04/05/2011 at 2:10 PM #

Note, the actual name still hasn’t been determined. I doubt it can be kept secret for 2.5 more hours.

certainly can say that I find this underwhelming which is what the letter told us I guess……..hmmmm

  6. Astral Rain 04/05/2011 at 2:12 PM #

If it’s Gottfried, it’s a step up at least from Sid, and the guy has had success.

    Rather have had Randy Bennett.

Impressed with coach after listening to press conference.

  8. wolfpackdawg 04/05/2011 at 8:59 PM #

We need to stand behind the hire. He will be here for at least 3 – 5 years.

Don’t fret over things you have no control over.

Presser wasn’t bad at all. We know he can run a program and win at a major conference D-1 school. Not quite as good of a fall back as I’d hoped for heading into the search, but not too far off. Maybe he will work out. I think he can win 5-7 more games next year than Sidney did this year on experience alone.

  10. BJD95 04/05/2011 at 9:04 PM #

I’m done with Wolfpack basketball. It’s dead and buried. Time to move on.

This guys hasn’t worked in two and a half years. But Debbie Yow has known him for 30 years! As if that’s a job qualification.

I apologize to each and every one of you for being gullible enough to believe in her “leadership.”

And I look forward to football season.

This is not a bad hire. I am sure he was not on the “A” list of candidates but his record is very similar to Gregg Marshall and Marshall never has coached in a league like the SEC. I am excited that we hired a quality coach. A definite step up from Lowe, and Sendek and a whole staircase up from Robinson. People say he has not been able to find a job in two years but the fact is that his million dollar/year contract with Alabama did not expire until this year and he did not want to lose that money. Obviously there were some issues with his last two years at Alabama and I am still trying to figure out exactly what happened there but considering all the issues we had to deal with with Sendek’s team morale and Lowe’s low performing teams I will gladly give him the benefit of the doubt for two bad years (and by the way, he had a winning record his last year before he quit). Hopefully he can keep the current players on the roster but it sounds like Leslie has already decided to go to the NBA.

I too felt a bit better after listening to the press conference. Maybe not the home run we were all dreaming of, but he’s been successful and hopefully he can be again here. As has been discussed on this site, Sendek was much more successful here than anywhere else because we had the resources to make him more successful. We can/should be a better basketball school than Alabama, and if we help him improve on what he did there we may all wind up pleased with this pick in the end.

I’m very curious to see what kind of staff he puts together. Hope all the players and recruits are impressed enough to want to be part of the Pack moving forward.

Well, BJD95, at least we didn’t get your “love child” (GM), or Frank Haith.

  14. ADVENTUROO 04/05/2011 at 9:10 PM #

I was very impressed with the way he handled himself….as well as Debbie at the presser.

He made good points and seemed to be totally focused on what needs to be done.

He has had a couple of years to “clear” his head. I think that really makes Mark an excellent hire.

His coaching resume is very impressive and he knows how to recruit and how to win.

Obviously, having to “stay in the game” from a broadcastors viewpoint has also given him insight that as a coach he would NOT have had.

Isn’t ironic, that our last young coach, well the young one that WON some games, later became an ESPN commentator. Now we have a coach that had a great career and hit a bump and then became a broadcastor….and is now a coach again.

I was never enamored with Lavin, but he seems to be a better coach since he took his sabbatical.

GREAT HIRE…..You gotta wonder who the FOUR were….Barnes, Smart, Miller and Marshall. THEN, you gotta wonder WHO was the one who spoke in hushed tones and seemed to be “reverensenced” with Mikey and Huck. My money is on Marshall…

GO PACK….looking forward to the Coaches Caravan later this month.

If anybody else had made this hire, you would be laughing your ass off. DY finished what Todd Turner and Lee Fowler started – making NC State basketball a national joke. And her letter last night (in retrospect) was a cowardly attempt to deflect blame from the fact that she couldn’t do her job. Period.

I would hate to be working for the Wolfpack Club right now. Fundraising just got a lot harder. Fortunately, I can’t imagine this guy cost very much. Unless DY really, really wanted to line the pockets of a personal friend.

After everything I think we came out DAMN GOOD! I like the hire! Have heard very good things about him.
He has consistent success at the Div I level. I think he’s by far a better hire than Smart or Marshall. If he can win at Murray State and Alabama, he should do extremely well here! He’s also known as a great recruiter. Things are looking good!

  17. triadwolf 04/05/2011 at 9:10 PM #

At first I was saying WTF. But after settling down and reviewing his record and overall resume I have to say that we could have done much worse. Twelve Post-Season trips in 14 years (includes one CBI turn down) including 7 NCAA trips and an elite 8. I’m not saying he’s Billy Donovan, but if he can do that at Alambama that should be his floor at NC State.

His last couple years at AL and the drop off at the end are a bit of a concern, but he did have a lot of injury issues including his best player during that time. Sounds like his wife and the AD had a run in and that played a part in the resignation.

He said all the right things in the presser which is expected (or should be with a quality hire) and looks like he wants to be here. Welcome to The Pack and lets hope this is the beginning of our resurection. Go Pack!

I’m starting to become concerned, with the unhinged nature of commentary from Yow. This may not be popular to say, but all the terse and rude commentary is extremely unprofessional, counterproductive… and will serve to further stereotype NCState as a difficult environment. The press release last night and comments in the press conference do not sound like the words of a pragmatic and far thinking leader. I am very concerned the real Debbie Yow is showing itself and will the fire tongued talk may stoke the fire of some I promise you from the ouside looking in– it makes NC State look unstable and at risk. We need stability and bridge building — not irrationality and across the board bridge burning in public at the slightest provication. Very… concerned.

  19. swamppack 04/05/2011 at 9:11 PM #

I’m almost embarrassed to go with this obvious play on words but I just can’t resist it………….we Gott fried.

  20. Packster 04/05/2011 at 9:11 PM #

Seems like the site has been overwhelmed for a few hours now…just able to post. I think we have mad a good hire. I would like to know more about what happened at Alabama. That raises a red flag with me. I was impressed with his appearance at the press conference. He seemed to be quite happy to have a job.

  21. wolfpackdawg 04/05/2011 at 9:13 PM #

Step away from the ledge BJD. Compare him to Sid.

  22. choppack1 04/05/2011 at 9:14 PM #

I can’t say I’m thrilled. What worries me is that in the last 2 years his career took a definite nosedive.

It’s definitely a gamble. I don’t consider this a TOB-esque hire. TOB reached a certain level of success and sustained – this guy reached the absolute pinnacle at ‘Bama, and proceeded to tumble down the mountain he scaled.

Got no choice but to give him a shot. He deserves our support and respect at this point – like Sid, it’s not his fault he actually got the job.

If I see him flying down I-40 two and a half hours before a big game on Saturday, I’ll take it as a bad sign though.

  23. Packster 04/05/2011 at 9:15 PM #

Also…although I think she has done a good job so far, I thought Yow’s comment on Gary Williams in the press conference was unprofessional and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

  24. BJD95 04/05/2011 at 9:17 PM #

The two least professional searches and the two worst hires in recent history. Both by NC State. Consecutively. As Popeye would say – I’ve stands alls I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.

Again, I apologize to the Yow critics. You were spot on from the beginning. I said the hire would speak for itself, and it has spoken.

By God has it ever spoken. A poor man’s Bzdelik.

  25. redwolf87 04/05/2011 at 9:18 PM #

There has to be some evidence that Gary ran his mouth. You can’t come out in that kind of environment and make that kind of a charge if it isn’t true.

Somebody on our end knows something.

However, legally, I think I heard, once, the three elements of slander:

    – the statement was false;
    – the person making the statement knew it was false;
    – the person making the statement did so with intent to harm.

Problem is, if this definition is true, you can never prove that anything that was said, if opinion, was false.

Concerning the hire? Jury will be out for awhile, but this has some potential to be good. Maybe not what we were hoping for, but it’s not a total strikeout.

Guys that get a second chance have a lot of motivation to make it count.
