Gillispie has also had informal contact about the jobs at Arkansas and just-opened Oklahoma. The source said, however, that Arkansas has already had face-to-face contact with and is close to hiring Minnesota coach Tubby Smith.

I just don’t see Mack leaving Xavier since that is his alma mater. That is “his neck of the woods.” That would be an amazing hire. He’s done well in his 2 years there and he has also learned from some damn good coaches in his previous years as an assistant (Skip Prosser, Sean Miller). Who knows for sure though except for Yow and God. Come run with the wolves Mack.

Oh yeah, I’m remember when we played them a few years back when they had Nate Robinson and Roy. I think we lost a game at their place with Hodge getting hacked with no call on the final play. That was a good team but Washington hasn’t done much in a crappy PAC10 or nationally since then. I dare say that some of Sid’s teams could have contended in the pac 10 in the last few years. Anybody in the PAC10 recently that is not at least 13-5 every year is not an A lister in my book.

I know that this is a place where everyone is free to express themselves (unless they step over the moderators drawn lines). After all, it is a forum. I think that it is great to debate the merits of various potential candidates.

However, does anything good come out of Wolfpack Nation speculation, even if multiple posters have the same name in mind? After all, this is NC State, the lunatic fringe and the national sports writer’s dog that they love to continually kick back into its place (under the porch and out of site).

After Les, HWSNBN, and Sid two more weeks if needed is a piece of cake for me. JMHO I certainly will not be offended if you choose to disagree.

My guess is that adventuroo is referring to Mark Few.

    Gonzaga’s coach?

  6. Dogbreath 03/14/2011 at 11:00 PM #

    Romar or Alford…hmmm.

I would have to guess Matt Painter at Purdue, just because like Sidney, he is the head coach at his alma mater having serving as the team’s point guard.

Some other people that would meet this criteria – Jim Boeheim at Syracuse, Roy Williams at UNC, Bob Huggins at WVU, Ed DeChellis at Penn State, Donnie Tyndall at Morehead State. Their are quite a few other coaches with local ties to their areas.

I was checking resumes and what Fran Dunphy has done at Temple and Penn has been pretty impressive.

My second guess is Mike Davis is also a name that hasn’t come up on the boards during this search and he has a couple of similarities, he’s from Alabama, played for 2 college coaches, coached professionally, was hired to fill a historical position with his first college job, but ultimately had to he invent himself in his second job.

We better not be about to pay a guy with 2 years of coaching experience at essentially a mid-major in the 3 mil range. That’s crazy talk.

  9. GAWolf 03/14/2011 at 11:05 PM #

Painter is a reasonable guess as if you recall I have a connection to a current Purdue coach and the entire athletic department there LOVES… L..O…V..E..S… LOVES Chancellor Woodson.

Painter or Counzo Martin also with a Pedue past:

Cuonzo Martin, Missouri State: Here’s your Hot Young Guy. Martin was Glenn Robinson’s wingman at Purdue when the Big Dog was the best player in college basketball. Martin played in Europe and survived non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has become a coach of growing portfolio. He won 24 games last season at Missouri State, which as Southwest Missouri State perpetrated a memorable NCAA tournament upset of Clemson at the old Omni. Another reason to like Martin: He worked under Gene Keady at Purdue, and Keady assistants do well. Think Kevin Stallings at Vanderbilt, Bruce Weber at Illinois and now Matt Painter with the Boilermakers.

Agree with GA, my connection over there LOVES Woodson and raves about spending time with him when he can.

As it has been mentioned before, the tag team of Woodson and Yow should yield very good results. I am still impressed by the hiring for men’s soccer.

Painter would be worth big $… and big $ is indeed being put together… and in my eyes has much more experience worthy of that than Mack. I’d be happy with Painter.

  13. codebrown 03/14/2011 at 11:18 PM #

    Dave paulson of Bucknell.

  14. eas 03/14/2011 at 11:48 PM #

It would be strange if it were Romar because he just signed a 10 year extension not too long ago.

  15. tjfoose1 03/14/2011 at 11:57 PM #

Guys, this is an easy one… Yow’s choice is a ‘no brainer’. Yow is obviously gonna hire Gary Williams.

  16. wolfpack15 03/15/2011 at 12:00 AM #

Come on guys! Think about it!
“Mark my word” “his neck of the woods”
They have to be talking about Mark Fox at GA.

  17. Wolfguy 03/15/2011 at 12:16 AM #

Based on the clues it sounds like Painter.
    – Played PG similar to Lowe
    – He is from Indiana and coaching in that state now
    – He has a very impressive resume.
    – His team is currently in the NCAAs
    – And I have not seen his name brought up other than some top 10 list but no serious discussion.

That being said, Painter would be an incredible hire and has the youth many fans are looking for.

Here is what ROO said on the other thread:

“As to the unnamed coach….here are some tidbits….you figure it out…..

About the SAME age as Coach Lowe.

Was a Star HS Point Guard

Has been a Head Coach for 10 years and guess HOW many times he took his team to the NCAA?

Never played COLLEGE Basketball…nor ANY Collegiate sport.

Only Coached at ONE School and LIKES his neck of the woods….which ain’t CLOSE to Raleigh.”

FWIW I think Roo is full of it, but figuring out who his mystery man is should be interesting. Neither Romar or Painter qualify.

  19. wolf_at_my_door 03/15/2011 at 12:35 AM #

    Mark Few

  20. Wolfguy 03/15/2011 at 12:37 AM #

    – Correction – Played Point guard under a legendary coach and also coached at his alma mater.

    Painter fits perfectly.

I would be stunned if Few came to State. The guy has lived on the West Coast his whole life. He graduated from Oregon, so even though the PAC-10 is down, you’d think he’d jump there if he wanted to coach at a bigger school. I just heard him on Rome and he didn’t sound like a guy about to uproot his family. The ONLY reason I could see it is that he wants to challenge himself and go against Roy and K. He hasn’t shied away from tough schedules and he is very competitive, so bringing State back to prominence in the midst of those two would be quite the feather in his cap.

I brought up Romar the other day, after watching Washington/AU. Romar has done a fine job, but I don’t get the impression that he’s a name anywhere but on the West Coast. So he could be an under the radar hire. Perfectly capable, ready for a bigger stage. His did sign an extension which is good through 2020 – so that would seem to eliminate him as well.

When I heard Roo’s comment of “neck of the woods” I thought of one guy. Who’s mascot(kinda) is a tree? How about Stanford’s coach Johnny Dawkins? haha. It’s way out in left field and Stanford kinda sucked this year but what if Yow is targeting Coach K’s assistants?

Would anybody want Wojo? He is definitley in his neck of the woods and is probably enjoying the cush life under Coach K. And he probably will not like to go against him 2or3 times a year.

Anybody know if he can actually coach?

    sorry really random.

  23. wolfie91 03/15/2011 at 2:24 AM #

tvp1 figuring out who the mystery man is just requires one visit to wikipedia.

can’t figure out why roo talks about that coach as if he’s slim pickins. that threw me off the first time. but the person he is talking about has been mentioned now and in 06 many times as one of those dream candidates. would be a homerun hire IMO.

  24. wolfie91 03/15/2011 at 2:37 AM #

and by “slim pickins” I mean that he called the guy a relative unknown candidate and said he’s the only one we’ve asked to talk to.

“My wife went to Xavier and I watch a lot of their games. His two years have been impressive. The guy can flat out coach. His teams are disciplined and he doesn’t tolerate nonsense. The dude is intense. His teams have been the polar opposites of ours the last two years.”

Xavier seems like the farm system for bigger programs. They seem to always have good coaches that produce good results who then get hired away and replaced by another good coach. What’s the deal over there?
