NCAAT Selection Discussion Thread

Once again, this means nothing to us Pack fans, personally. But it’s still one of the most interesting sports days of the year. This thread will be updated with more analysis once the regions are revealed. Please use the comments to discuss your reactions and add your own analysis.

FWIW, I expect one ACC bubble team (FSU) to make it outright, one (Clemson) to play in one of the Tuesday/Wednesday “limbo” preliminary games, and two (VT, BC) to be left out entirely. VT and Clemson could easily switch places, but I doubt both will make it, and I’m certain the ACC won’t get 6 dance cards punched. 3-5 bids would be plausible, but I’m betting on 4.

Duke will get a #1 seed and a ridiculously weak #2 (either Notre Dame or San Diego State – just watch). UNC will get a #3 seed, and hopefully a much stronger #2 (but likely either weak #2 listed above that Duke doesn’t get).

I think your theory on who to chose in your brackets is accurate:

    Florida
    Arizona
    Pitt
    Texas

Choose all to go as far as possible because each represents the worst-case scenario for Pack fans.

Duke #1 in the West …

  3. BJD95 03/13/2011 at 5:48 PM #

Duke gets sent out west. A bit of a surprise, but they were the 4th #1 seed. Looking good that SDSU will be their #2, as I predicted.

Clemson is in! As is UAB, their first round opponent on Tuesday. Wow.

Mason gets an 8 seed – hard to believe we beat them – and will play sliding Nova who gets a high 9 seed.

UGa gets in solidly with a 10 seed.

Holes on the two line? Are you kidding me? 3 line at best …

  5. BJD95 03/13/2011 at 5:55 PM #

Ooooh, UNC got royally fucked! The two worst matchups for them in the entire nation (Ohio State and Cuse) are the 1 and 3 in their bracket. LMAO.

  6. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:00 PM #

Texas fell to the 4 line … ouch.

SDSU gets the two line, deservedly.

Barnes v Miller 2nd round matchup!

  8. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:01 PM #

Penn St., with 14 losses, in solidly on the 10 line.

  9. BJD95 03/13/2011 at 6:05 PM #

Duke’s bracket actually pretty tough, other than the soft #2.

  10. BJD95 03/13/2011 at 6:06 PM #

Duke desperately needs to see Texas and Arizona upset (as much as us Pack fans do).

Not sure how I feel about these new last 4 in 12 seed games. On one hand West Virginia gets to play a team that has already played a game and had to travel. But on the other hand they have less time to scout and prepare for their opponent or double their scouting.

Exactly BJD. We need a those guys to have a quick stay.

You gotta love the Boston U kids cheering for getting to face Kansas. 🙂

FSU could beat Texas A&M so there is another upset that would be good for NC State.

  14. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:10 PM #

UNLV gets an 8 – in solidly … Richmond would not have made it without winning the A-10 title as they get a 12.

A&M on the 7 line against FSU on the 10 line … VT up in the air still.

VCU gets in against USC … doesn’t look good for VT.

  15. Lunatic Fringe 03/13/2011 at 6:13 PM #

For the record, I like how ND plays and would cheer for them if Ben’s last name was not Hansbrough.

Texas A&M gets FSU & ND. Whew!

Somewhere in SWVA, Seth Greenberg’s head is exploding. And I’m pretty sure Bryant Gumbel is super drunk. He keeps asking “are we in” re team celebrations for tourney champions.

BJD favorite Mark Turgeon has a good draw to make the S16 if he can grind past the Noles.

  17. WV Wolf 03/13/2011 at 6:14 PM #

I really don’t get this last 4 in thing now. USC/VCU is for an 11 seed but UAB/Clemson is for a 12 seed?

I agree, not looking good for VT.

  18. BJD95 03/13/2011 at 6:19 PM #

Can’t believe Colorado didn’t make it. I thought they were in pretty solidly. Better than UAB, for sure.

  19. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:19 PM #

    K-State gets a 5 … a bit high to me.

    Florida a 2?

Greenberg out again … Feel kinda bad for him as he clearly thought they had got in after that FSU game the other night.

    Surprised Colorado didn’t make it.

  20. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:21 PM #

Would’ve taken Colorado over just about all the first round teams (VCU, UAB, Clemson, USC).

  21. wufpup76 03/13/2011 at 6:28 PM #

They did at least bring up that Colorado’s non-conf SOS was 325 or something. I guess that’ll do it.

  22. Old MacDonald 03/13/2011 at 6:28 PM #

Syracuse better not do one of their patented early flameouts.

  23. tvp1 03/13/2011 at 6:28 PM #

Wouldn’t shock me to see Greenburg lobby hard for our job through back channels. He has to think he is cursed/bumping up against a ceiling at VT.

  24. Texpack 03/13/2011 at 6:30 PM #

Either Barnes or Miller available to talk after first weekend.

  25. choppack1 03/13/2011 at 6:35 PM #

Man – how in the hell does USC get in???

    VaTech is royally screwed again.

People b*tch about college football, but IMHO, this crap is worse.
