Monday Evening Speculation

SFN continues to monitor the rampant speculation, but as we’ve mentioned previously, we have no reason to buy into the credibility of any of it, and as a result, there’s nothing new of value to report this evening.

The only thing we’ve really confirmed today is that Jeff Goodman is a “Heisman”-caliber idiot. Here’s a few of his Tweets about our coaching search (link):

N.C. State’s Debbie Yow being given the Heisman by several candidates thus far. She may be waiting now to win the presser with Shaka Smart.

The question, though, is whether Shaka Smart would even take the N.C. State job. I’m told it wouldn’t be a no-brainer for him.

N.C. State fans are delusional if they think it’s been only Rick Barnes and Sean Miller that have given Debbie Yow the Heisman.

Sources told me that a coach in the A-10, Conference-USA and another one in the Big 12 have said “thanks, but no thanks” to NC State.

The coaching search game doesn’t work as with official offers. It’s a search firm guy throwing out a number and seeing if there’s interest.

In at least three occasions in addition to Barnes and Miller, coaches said they weren’t interested and didn’t move forward.

I still don’t understand why it matters whether people turn jobs down. Perfect example: Sean Miller. He was way down line of options at AZ.

Obviously, since there’s no info coming from Yow’s office, Goodman’s sources are probably all coaches, or more precisely, their agents. Coaches are notoriously egomaniacs, and it’s not only strategic but also feels good for them to publicly express their disinterest in a job they haven’t been offered, and it makes Goodman feel good to use Twitter to let us all know how little he thinks of the N.C. State job.

But, it’s no secret that the chatter surrounding Billy Donovan has seemed to pick up some momentum today, and perhaps Donovan is the “knockout hire” Tim Brando mentioned yesterday. It’s easy for Yow to keep her own folks under wraps, but once you begin negotiating with another coach, you have no control over how well that program contains leaks. So, if this is truly happening, the nerve-racking silence is probably because Florida wants it contained as much as Yow so that they can quickly move on their top target (perhaps even Shaka Smart, who was an assistant under Donovan before he went to VCU).

We found this interesting “March Stipulation” included in Donovan’s contract (Orlando Sentinel link):

If Donovan leaves the school without cause, he must pay the school $500,000. If the school fires Donovan without cause, he receives $2.5 million for every year left on his contract. This is big time — and it could have caused the 16-month holdup. If the Gators were to fire Donovan in two years, he’d receive around $7.5 million. This shows the Gators are serious about Donovan’s stability. However, there’s a window from March 1 to April 1 of any year when both parties can walk away clean, no monetary issues. Interesting.

So…if we have made an offer to Donovan, then we should know by Thursday afternoon, right? After that, we can be fairly certain that Shaka Smart is our main focus.

In the meantime, speculate away on the SFN Forums.

EDIT: 11-8 over last 2 years…..forgot about 1st round game.

knock it off with the Geno Areola talk…good grief!

If we don’t get either Miller, Barnes, or Donovan…who all seem unlikely…the best available get imo is Stevens or Smart. I think Smart is the most likely choice. I’d also interview some experienced guys and it will probably come down to interviews, money, and personal choices of the interviewees.

If we talk to Smart but don’t land him, I’d be okay..but I think he should get a call if we haven’t hired one of the top 3 by Friday.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I want Pat Summit!!!!!

  4. LRM 03/29/2011 at 10:02 AM #

Auriemma is the same age as Rick Barnes, and the whole argument against Barnes has been his age.

I agree with Wulfpack… I think that Stevens is missing from this discussion. Perhaps he’s too big of a long shot. Sounds like he’s waiting for his “perfect situation” – basically an opening somewhere in the Big 10 or possibly Big 12, but the guy’s stock can’t get a whole heck of a lot higher than it is now… back to back Final Four’s? Not too shabby. Maybe, there’s a chance that if there’s no decision prior to the weekend, Smart AND Stevens are still in the mix.

Not sure if this article has made the rounds, but it has some relevant info about Smart:

For those that honestly believed the post saying we should hire Geno A from UConn was someone truly wanting that to happen then please quit reading the posts and responding like it was serious.

  8. Packfan28 03/29/2011 at 11:03 AM #

The Geno A comments are already making us a laughingstock on other message boards. I wish SFN would do a complete sweep of all posts containing the guy’s name and delete them, and then ban the idiot who started it.

I seriously think Geno can win big in the men’s game. For those that think success in womens college bball won’t translate to the men’s game, please state your sources.

The only women’s coach I’d ever consider hiring is Bill Laimbeer, and even then , I’m only saying that as a joke right now.

We need an A-list hire to be relevant right now (and Smart is an A-list hire right now)

    “I just hear ANOTHER rumor.”

ADVENTUROO – Serious question – Do you make up your mind before posting that every post is going to be half a page or more?

  12. Packfan28 03/29/2011 at 12:51 PM #

Haha MP, I’ve been wondering the same thing. Some day I’m actually going to read a whole Adventuroo post.

  13. WeAreCured 03/29/2011 at 1:12 PM #

Why do y’all care what people on other message boards say, or even this board for that matter? Even if we hire a coach that makes the media talk about State b-ball for a fleeting moment, that doesn’t equal relevancy. None of it matters in reality, as long as the future coach can get the program back to winning basketball games. Anyone that makes fun of hiring Geno bc he’s a women’s coach is a complete douche anyway. “OMG! State’s hiring a women’s coach! ROFL!”… Lame.

Last night I let this idiot Goodman’s comments get to me.

And then, this morning, I received an unsolicited phone call from a friend who is not a rumor spreader, and had information from a very good source who, last night, “heard something he wasn’t supposed to”.

I share this not for attention, but to encourage everyone that may be a little dismayed. If what he told me is true–this ends unbelievably well for NC State. About as good as it could. And it jives with everything else positive we’ve heard this week from this site.

I’m not yanking chains here. Anything could happen to make it fall through. But personally I can say that I feel a LOT better about things.

Right now I can simply dream at the thought of these media idiots sputtering all over themselves to explain this one.

  15. Wolfman 9806 03/29/2011 at 2:16 PM #

Rather have Summit than Geno…..much hotter!

  16. Howler 03/29/2011 at 2:40 PM #

David Glenn on his radio show just cited as good reporting his report that the Rick Barnes chapter has closed plus the report that the Sean Miller chapter has closed. I don’t think either of those guys will leave their current situation but I really don’t see evidence of ANY real journalism there. Any coach with sense will deny interest in leaving until they actually leave. Why don’t they get K, Roy, Calhoun, Calipari, Matta and Boeheim all to deny interest in our job and then report that as news.

  17. Hungwolf 03/29/2011 at 3:32 PM #

I would fully endorse Pat Summit as our next coach. We would be a media darling, could probably ink our own TV deal. Networks would line up to show her coach against K and Roy. Mothers would make their boys play for her. Parents would love her. Women would flock to buy tickets, every game sold out, every tournament would invite us to play. THE First school to hire a woman coach for Div I Men Bball, we’d be profiled in every history of the game segment for eternity! What’s not to like about this?

  18. WeAreCured 03/29/2011 at 3:39 PM #

    She’s not hung?

  19. Packfan28 03/29/2011 at 4:24 PM #

Dave Glenn loves himself so much he gets an erection every time he opens his mouth.

  20. OldWuf 03/29/2011 at 4:28 PM #

Student texted me:”Donovan on campus today”. Anybody have other intel to confirm? (Just thought I would spread another unsubstantiated rumor)

  21. highstick 03/29/2011 at 4:32 PM #

Rather have Summit than Geno…..much hotter!

Plus she could kick Bill Lambieer’s rump and beat him on the golf course!

  22. Pacobee 03/29/2011 at 4:48 PM #

OldWuf…multiple twitter posts similar to that under BD. PackPride has one post indicating that BD was interviewed earlier in Charlotte.

I am hoping these are correct, and he’s back to dot the “i’s” and cross the “t’s”. Dr Yow may want to have him use a Sharpie after the Magic flip flop a few years back.

Hopefully we’ll have something soon so we can all quit stalking the social media sites and blogs.

    GoPack!

With everyone and their grandmother (yes, my 91 year old grandmother)having a camera on their phone there is 0% chance anyone saw a coach on campus today and did not take a picture and sent it everyone they know.

From Pack Insider.com….a ESPN radio affiliate in Florida places Donovan in Raleigh.

    http://packinsider.com/forum/wolfpack-hoops/our-take-on-the-billy-donovan-rumors/

Seems to be something to him interviewing. That doesn’t mean there will be an offer or that he’ll accept.

I for one have my fingers crossed. Go get ’em Debbie!

  25. tuffyandsons 03/29/2011 at 6:32 PM #

I’ve heard this from a few folks, but my friend from Kentucky texted me this link-

    http://www.kentuckysportsnetwork.com/forum/topics/billy-donovan-to-nc-state

The link is not credible, it is just rumors on a blog, but if it turns out to be true I would be upset at Julius blowing the cover on this deal (with hodge’s behavior, it wouldn’t surprise me at all)
