Monday Evening Speculation

SFN continues to monitor the rampant speculation, but as we’ve mentioned previously, we have no reason to buy into the credibility of any of it, and as a result, there’s nothing new of value to report this evening.

The only thing we’ve really confirmed today is that Jeff Goodman is a “Heisman”-caliber idiot. Here’s a few of his Tweets about our coaching search (link):

N.C. State’s Debbie Yow being given the Heisman by several candidates thus far. She may be waiting now to win the presser with Shaka Smart.

The question, though, is whether Shaka Smart would even take the N.C. State job. I’m told it wouldn’t be a no-brainer for him.

N.C. State fans are delusional if they think it’s been only Rick Barnes and Sean Miller that have given Debbie Yow the Heisman.

Sources told me that a coach in the A-10, Conference-USA and another one in the Big 12 have said “thanks, but no thanks” to NC State.

The coaching search game doesn’t work as with official offers. It’s a search firm guy throwing out a number and seeing if there’s interest.

In at least three occasions in addition to Barnes and Miller, coaches said they weren’t interested and didn’t move forward.

I still don’t understand why it matters whether people turn jobs down. Perfect example: Sean Miller. He was way down line of options at AZ.

Obviously, since there’s no info coming from Yow’s office, Goodman’s sources are probably all coaches, or more precisely, their agents. Coaches are notoriously egomaniacs, and it’s not only strategic but also feels good for them to publicly express their disinterest in a job they haven’t been offered, and it makes Goodman feel good to use Twitter to let us all know how little he thinks of the N.C. State job.

But, it’s no secret that the chatter surrounding Billy Donovan has seemed to pick up some momentum today, and perhaps Donovan is the “knockout hire” Tim Brando mentioned yesterday. It’s easy for Yow to keep her own folks under wraps, but once you begin negotiating with another coach, you have no control over how well that program contains leaks. So, if this is truly happening, the nerve-racking silence is probably because Florida wants it contained as much as Yow so that they can quickly move on their top target (perhaps even Shaka Smart, who was an assistant under Donovan before he went to VCU).

We found this interesting “March Stipulation” included in Donovan’s contract (Orlando Sentinel link):

If Donovan leaves the school without cause, he must pay the school $500,000. If the school fires Donovan without cause, he receives $2.5 million for every year left on his contract. This is big time — and it could have caused the 16-month holdup. If the Gators were to fire Donovan in two years, he’d receive around $7.5 million. This shows the Gators are serious about Donovan’s stability. However, there’s a window from March 1 to April 1 of any year when both parties can walk away clean, no monetary issues. Interesting.

So…if we have made an offer to Donovan, then we should know by Thursday afternoon, right? After that, we can be fairly certain that Shaka Smart is our main focus.

In the meantime, speculate away on the SFN Forums.

Absolutely. My point was, that’s how ridiculous the Goodman comment was. Kind of puts in perspective.

I just heard from a friend that Debbie is talking to Geno Auriemma and is prepared to offer the job. I think it would be a good choice. He has proven he can win.

  3. Wolfman 9806 03/29/2011 at 8:17 AM #

^Is she offering him the women’s job? Surely, we’re not talking about the men’s position.

  4. drizzlewolf 03/29/2011 at 8:18 AM #

Marshall might be on his way to SC if Darrin Horn loses his job. Mass exodus in Columbia right now.

Another interesting tidbit I heard this AM about Smart and VCU.

During the season, they were 250th in the NCAA in team D – opponents FG% is almost 46%. During the tourney, it is below 40%.

During the season, VCU made at most 11 3 point shots in any one game, and shot about 35% for the season. In the tourney alone, they have made 13 3’s in 3 games, and shooting almost 50%.

What does this say? Says measure the man by the course of the season, not by a recent hot streak.

I am not saying Smart will not be a good coach somewhere, sometime. Right now, VCU has gotten hot, but if they were so tough, where were they all year long to finish 4th in the Colonial?

Speculation is getting crazy. My productivity at work is suffering…
Not sure Geno’s success at women’s level would translate to a man’s team. Not being sexist, but they are two totally different games.

  7. Packfan28 03/29/2011 at 8:41 AM #

Geno Auriemma? Please DY, please hurry up. These blogs are turning into a freak fest.

  8. wolfie91 03/29/2011 at 8:43 AM #

For all the people saying no way a CUSA coach would turn down an ACC job – didn’t that happen already last time? Why is it hard to envision that we sent an inquiry (not an offer) to Pastner but he wasn’t interested.

I think folks need to get ready for getting a mid major coach, which is fine because that is what most schools do. Please do not have a message board meltdown over who gets hired.

  9. PoppaJohn 03/29/2011 at 8:44 AM #

Geno Auriemma????????? No please, not that. That’s basically another circus stunt, just like Sid was.
If Sid’s experience coaching in the NBA didn’t translate well to the NCAA, at least that was the same game. The women’s game, recruiting, it’s all different.

We will be the laughingstock of the national media if that really happens. And when we have to replace him, no one will want the job.

Hire Charles Shackelford or Chris Washburn before this guy. At least we’d be publicly admitting we’ve givien up rather than trying to make a silk purse out of another failed coaching search.

Please let that rumor be wrong …

I still put Randy Bennett of Saint Marys as a great candidate, with 10 seasons there, after his first year, has won 20 or more games 9 years, one of the nation’s top offenses, sweet 16 last year, and WAC conference champs this year over Gonzaga, but left out of the NCAA tournament after losing conference tourney. So again what an appeal it should be to know you can qualify for the tournament yearly, with that in the ACC. Would like Billy Donavan, but if a big name isn’t in our future, then Bennett deserves a look.

  11. ADVENTUROO 03/29/2011 at 8:53 AM #

I just hear ANOTHER rumor. Kelly Harper is campaigning BIG time for Debbie Yow to hire Pat Summitt. She is now NOT playing. Did you guys see the locker room footage that ESPN ran (over and over and over) on Saturday. I would hate for that lady to get in my face…

Just kidding…..but IT will happen someday. As to Geno, don’t know about him…..but you gotta give him credit, either he is doing some illegal hormone injections or he can really coach because not too many folks, John Wooden included, that can match his.

I would also bet some significant money that the AD at VCU has not focused on how they are going to celebrate and what kind of reception the team will get when they come home next week….nor has he looked at the trophy case to see what, if any, rearrangements have been made.

I’ll bet he and his staff and their Ram’s Booster Club have been doing a 24X7 full court press on donors, as well as checking the sofa in the student union for loose change, in order to ante up enough money to keep him.

The JV cheerleaders have started a bake sale with cupcakes that say….”VCU LUVS U SS PLS STAY”.

My top candidate is still a long shot, and is dropping lower and lower. Having said that, I don’t see HOW we can attract BD and refuse to get my hopes up.

Someone posted SS’s background, which I had also put on another SFN thread yesterday. He is IMPRESSIVE. He has the moxy and the foundation to be a great coach. I hate to jinx this, but if his last name ended in an “O”, then I would think that God has predestined him for us. He has all the attributes, but not as much HC experience, as Jimmy V did. BUT, he has more real BB foundation….Jimmy V freely admitted that practice and preparation was essential and that there were a LOT better coaches at that (Mikey and Dean were his examples). But his theory, based on how he came up the ranks, was that if you had good players who believed in themselves and they worked hard and he did his job of coaching them in a GAME, then you could win almost anytime.

Smart appears to be a very talented X & O guy. If you don’t believe that, watch the final inbounds against FSU. Hamilton is still saying, “How’d they do dat?”. He also, if you watch the footage, is a passionate game (and locker room coach). We haven’t had one of those in a LONG time…..Stormin Norman and Jimmy V were a lot alike.

SO….I personally am partial to SS and figure we have a MUCH better shot at him that BD. As a Catawba County boy, I hate to cast dispersions on RB, but believe that he is a little past his prime for us. That is NOT to say that he is not a great coach and would not do a great job….I personally just think that an up and coming coach will be a better long term investment and I still have a LOT of years on my four LTR’s in the RBC.

Whatever, the Queen Bee of AD land is playing this cool….I would NOT want to play poker with her….

For all you people complaining about where VCU finished this year and telling us to look at the whole picture. How about you look at the whole picture because VCU won their conference tournament last year with Smart. This isn’t a flash in a pan. Don’t tell us to look at the whole picture and give us half of it.

And to be honest I’ll take 4th place in the ACC anyday if I can win the ACCtourney, something we haven’t done in 20 years, or get to the final four, something we haven’t done in 26 years. VCU has more success than we have had in 26 years with lesser facilities, lesser ‘ranked’ players, and a less conference. And you want to look down on them? Please, if any of the A list guys, Miller, Barnes, Donovan aint coming the two other names you want to hear are Stevens or Smart. Who has a better resume than a final four appearance out of the B list coaches?

  13. kyjelly 03/29/2011 at 8:57 AM #

Word is Painter is talking to Missouri? I am starting to worry now.

  14. anonimus 03/29/2011 at 8:59 AM #

Geno Auriemma? HA HA HA! That’s rich. I bet that’d play well on the recruiting circuit. “Sure, if you want to go play for the varsity womens team, go to NC State.” You’d be better off going with Pearl or . Settle down people. Geez.

  15. newt 03/29/2011 at 8:59 AM #

Who is John Goodman? Is he a State fan?

  16. hball57 03/29/2011 at 9:04 AM #

VCU played 3 NCAA teams out of conference this year and beat two of them (UCLA, Winthrop), losing by 5 to Tennessee. They had a bad February where they lost 5 conference games after which Coach Smart added a zone defense that has helped him in the NCAAs. As the CAA schedule is unbalanced, VCU played a much tougher schedule than the 3rd place team, Hosfra, which is why they were the #3 team in the CAA to make the NCAA tournament. If you look at his team he has recruited well for that level as many of his recruits play important roles for his team. So let’s be a little more factual.

And Butler finished in a three way tie for first of the Horizon League with a regular of 13-5. Tied with MW-Wisc and Cleveland St. They did beat Fla St. but looks like that was their big OOC win. I believe Yow will make a decision based on many factors in addition to conference finishes, individual wins and losses, etc.

  18. Rochester 03/29/2011 at 9:19 AM #

Instead of being dismissive of someone reaching the Final Four in his second season as being a fluke on a hot streak, you could turn that around and point out that Shaka Smart reached the Final Four in only his second year as a head coach. It’s not like they had an easy draw, either. VCU has won five games already, against five teams from power conferences. Four of those came by 10 or more points.

There are obvious questions about the program-building capability of anyone with so little experience, but Smart seems to have the game-day stuff down pretty well. I’m in the minority according to the poll on this site, because I’d rather have him than Barnes right now. (I wouldn’t cry if we got Barnes, though, that’s for sure.)

  19. Wulfpack 03/29/2011 at 9:29 AM #

I wish Painter would interview with us.

Interesting discussion. I’d take Stevens over just about anybody. Donovan would be fantastic but doesn’t seem likely. Nor does Stevens. Prove me wrong, Debbie.

  20. ClassOf95 03/29/2011 at 9:29 AM #

I’d be happy with Auriemma. 7 time national champion. The guy can coach and I don’t care if it has been in the women’s game. Great bball mind.

The “found a little tidbit about Smart” or “heard an interesting fact about Smart” are little more than haters. “If Kansas had hit their FTs, VCU and Smart wouldn’t be in the Final Four.”

These people must not be aware of NC State’s record in February of ’83.

If McQueen had not rebounded a missed FT with :06 seconds left against Pepperdine at about midnight Eastern time in Corvallis, Oregon, no one may of ever heard the name Jim Valvano outside of Raleigh, NC. That is the way the ball bounces, and McQueen’s shot bounced three times on the rim before dropping sending the game into OT 2.

I’m holding on to hope for a surprise hire, but Smart is the A-name on the B-list in my view.

  22. kbrown 03/29/2011 at 9:45 AM #

If we hire a Women’s basketball coach I will never attend another function at NCSU. I will withdraw from the Wolfpack Club and become a Carolina Fan. Talk about being the laughing stock of the ACC.

  23. LakistaMcCuller 03/29/2011 at 9:52 AM #

We won’t hire Geno, but for fun, here is what he brings

    1) 7 Rings. Can anyone else show 7 rings to a recruit? They say NCAA Champion on them.
    2) He is not afraid of anyone. DY talked about wanting a confident coach. There is no one in all of the NCAA more confident than Geno
    3) He can deal with headstrong women. Players, opposing coaches, etc…

It won’t happen, but I bet he (and Pat Summitt) could more than hold their own.

  24. waxhaw 03/29/2011 at 9:53 AM #

VCU is 10-8 versus NCAA teams over the last 2 years. The two years prior to Shaka, they were 1-5.

In the last 18 years, NC State has 2 years of non losing records versus NCAA participants. In 2 years, Shaka has 2 years of non losing records versus NCAA teams.

…..and before you start acting like they are beating up on the sisters of the poor, they’ve beaten UCLA, ODU, George Mason, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas.

Are they on a hot streak? Yes. Is he inexperienced? Yes. Is his success a fluke? doubtful
