Miller out of contention (J.P. Giglio)

Full Link

John Miller said he talked to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow about his son’s future but Sean Miller took himself out of contention for the Wolfpack job before Arizona’s surprising 93-77 win over Duke on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

“I think he really talked it over and made his decision,” said John Miller, a retired legendary high school coach in western Pennsylvania. “He just doesn’t want to make another move and move his family again.”

For everyone who is saying: “Now that Barnes and Miller are clearly not options, Yow can move on to realistic coaches”, please tell me how in the world our almighty-AD would mismanage this thing so badly that she would wait until we were “seemingly” publicly rejected by two of our top candidates to begin talking with other coaches.

Yow’s timeline is not our public timeline! If she is really just now waking up to the fact that we’re having to settle for a “realistic” candidate, she’s NOT the AD we thought she was – aka, this thing ain’t over till it’s over.

I guess we can ALL continue searching for our next coach.

Hint: This is Debbie Yow’s search. We talk as if we’re on her search committee or something. I think I’m bowing out of future speculation, and just going to enjoy the ride, wherever it takes us now.

The only clear message (still) is that NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING. I still don’t count Miller out. Not until we have our press conference to announce who the coach is.

I keep hearing how great an AD Debbie Yow is, but a lot of people at Maryland apparently don’t share that opinion, including the basketball and football coaches, the two most important coaches at any school. Should we have hired Bobby Purcell instead? Seems to me like we would’ve had an easier time landing a big-name coach with Purcell, as I suspect many big-name coaches may back off at the prospect of having as their boss a female AD who has a reputation of being being stubborn.

I don’t have any inside information and this may end happily ever after, but it just seems to me that any school wanting to be really big-time in football and/or men’s basketball would probably have better luck getting the coach they wanted with a male AD. I’m not agreeing with that concept, but with the big egos out there in big-name coaching land, it’s not a stetch to think that.

Just get me a mid-major coach with some fire power and I’m happy. Anyone think Josh Pastner will make a jump?

  5. scotchzombie 03/25/2011 at 5:32 PM #

If in fact reports are accurate and Barnes and Miller are out, I can’t say I am surprised. No doubt we should have pursued them. Still, the public rejections suck and just fuel the negative about NC State. Not sure they can be avoided though when you go after the big guns. In the end, the only way to turn that around is by winning. DY is no miracle worker, but she’ll make a better decision than LF and I’d be happy with the guy that becaome the Sean Miller of today in two years. Still holding onto hope (it’s what we do).

Good. Anthony Grant will prove to be a better coach. Any chance that we could get him?

If not, then how about Shaka Smart? At some point, to get a big payoff, you have to be ahead of the trend, catch a stock before it’s hot.

  7. tvopack 03/25/2011 at 5:33 PM #

I also think hiring a mid-major coach will make him forever grateful for the opportunity once he’s successful. There’s always a risk factor but if DY weights it careful then we’ll have a good chance.

    Eh.

Obviously this is pretty definitive. But I’m going with BJD on this.

I got VERY excited by the Miller talk and VERY excited when I thought Barnes was in town.

I’m sitting back, I’m going to stop stressing, I’m going to trust Debbie Yow. And no matter what folks, we end up with a better outcome this time than we did with Sid because the coach will have college HC experience, be that at only the mid-major level or at both the mid-major and BCS level.

Relax. Deep breaths. Let this process play out.

  9. BJD95 03/25/2011 at 5:34 PM #

Guys, chill the f-ck out. I wouldn’t write off Barnes or Miller. Let the process play out.

  10. cardiacpack14 03/25/2011 at 5:36 PM #

How is this officially being turned down in public? Some news reporter AKA news generator wants a story, so he goes out of his way to start asking family members, ADs, etc. of people on our supposed list (of which has never been made public) to get a “no”, and this is supposed to be an embarassment, an indictment on Yow, etc.

Give me a break. You can’t avoid this kind of crap.

“If we can’t get SM I would be very happy with Archie. AM has worked under Thad Matta and SM which are the two hottest coaches in the country right now. I just don’t think we should have the arrogance that he should have to pay his dues coaching a mid-major before he’s ready to coach at State. He could very well end up at school and have great success and not want to leave(like SM could).”

Look, Archie Miller may very well be a great head coach someday. But you have to realize that Lee Fowler is the only AD in the ACC that would ever hire a guy with zero head coaching experience at the college level.

Archie is still very young and I’m sure he’s hoping for his first head coaching opportunity to present itself. But it shouldn’t be at State, and that’s not arrogant, just realistic.

i, too, am not ruling out anyone until there is a coach at the podium or the coach says it in public himself.

  13. Howler 03/25/2011 at 5:40 PM #

Miller was the flavor of the day because he won last night. Now because we believe that he will make the not-so-shocking decision to stay at the school where he has quickly built a potential perennial championship contender, we consider that a failure on Debbie Yow’s part? If Shaka wins tonight, will tomorrow’s entries bemoan the fact that we didn’t sign him before sunrise? The only thing about this search similar to 2006 is the short-sighted hysteria of some of the fans. Back then, we had good reason to be hysterical. This time we don’t.

“Guys, chill the f-ck out. I wouldn’t write off Barnes or Miller. Let the process play out.”
    Well said, BJD95.

  15. BJD95 03/25/2011 at 5:42 PM #

If you don’t want to trust words of caution about our particular process, just look at the whole Mike Anderson/Arkansas thing. There will always be conflicting reports and sleight of hand involved. Nature of the media environment.

  16. beowolf 03/25/2011 at 5:49 PM #

NC State hasn’t changed. The only difference between this search and the last is that this time we are failing more quietly.

Prove me wrong, AD we hired because we all loved her sister…

  17. Hamlet 03/25/2011 at 5:50 PM #

I definitely would not write off Barnes. I think he is very much in play, regardless of what David Glenn reported. I’ve heard nothing to lead me to believe otherwise.

Again, thank you Lee Fowler for your outstanding leadership. Those are years we will never get back.

There is a Proverb which says of a person, “as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Many Wolfpack fans see our potential, and kudos to them, but too many others continue to wallow in gloom. Is it any wonder that gloom is what they see? I think a big reason the 2004 Red Sox won the World Series is because the coaching staff and players refused to believe ‘the curse’. We would do well to think likewise.

  19. Statefan1998 03/25/2011 at 6:01 PM #

I will not chill out. All you DY lovers will claim any hire she makes as a success. Reality is most people on here are hoping for another mid-major. Really? Is that really what you want? Ha!

If she is such a great AD, why did UFA, Texas, etc. hire her?

  20. swamppack 03/25/2011 at 6:02 PM #

I don’t see this article as anything to hang a hat on.
Even if it is true that SM does not want to come to State, his daddy is not his official spokes-person and this certainly does not qualify as an official public rejection.

  21. Wulfpack 03/25/2011 at 6:03 PM #

We all need to wake up and smell the coffee — Miller is not coming to State. God, I hope I am wrong.

Now that does not mean we can’t get an excellent coach. But his name won’t be Miller. We’re all just sharing opinions here as nobody knows a damn thing.

  22. Boyd 03/25/2011 at 6:05 PM #

“I suspect many big-name coaches may back off at the prospect of having as their boss a female AD who has a reputation of being being stubborn.”

Wow? What ****ing world do you live in? This isn’t the 20’s.

  23. Hamlet 03/25/2011 at 6:07 PM #

    JSRy2k,

You wrote, “too many others continue to wallow in gloom. Is it any wonder that gloom is what they see?”

So you think that the reason people see gloom is due to wallowing in it, and not due to the fact that we’ve sucked a** for 20 years? As far as I know, nobody posting here has any control over the search. It is out of our hands, as has the direction of this school’s athletic programs during a large chunk of our lifetimes.

If anyone sees gloom, it is because they have lived it for far too long.

  24. JT 03/25/2011 at 6:08 PM #

I don’t want Barnes. There are a number of other guys I think could work out great. I’m not sweating Miller. All I can say is that I’m excited to see who we get because this is a program primed to regain its rightful place in the hierarchy, i.e. at or near the top.

  25. SoCalwolf 03/25/2011 at 6:08 PM #

What in the world is the fixation some have with the Miller clan? It’s bodering on the sureal.

Sean Miller did a decent job at Xavier and has a good run going in the tournament righ now, but there are a LOT of other options, other coaches who are just as capable or possibly even better.

As I mentioned earlier, one of those is Grant, and I’m sure there are others.
