Miller out of contention (J.P. Giglio)

John Miller said he talked to N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow about his son’s future but Sean Miller took himself out of contention for the Wolfpack job before Arizona’s surprising 93-77 win over Duke on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. in the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

“I think he really talked it over and made his decision,” said John Miller, a retired legendary high school coach in western Pennsylvania. “He just doesn’t want to make another move and move his family again.”

Smart or Mack. Let’s have this done by dinner Monday please…

the restless coach at a football school with 2 national titles, and another possible final four this year comes to State who hasn’t been to a Final Four since 1983, an elite 8 since 1986 or even a NCAA since 2006. Florida’s 2 seed this year is higher than any State team has ever been seeded since 79. I love State, but we need to realistically view our job. Obviously fans want a big name, but the big names don’t view our job the same as UK/UNC/Duke/UCLA. Fact is our current job is basically equal to Texas/Florida/Pitt/Nova/Zona. I think it is a great job, but it was alot better in 1985. 25 years have past since then and the job isn’t regarded the same. It is tragic what Les/Lee/etc did to our program.

Packalum44: I am a casual fan, as in I go to and watch games on tv. I have no power to make a decision on the coaching search, nor do I have access to higher ups within the athletic department, so yes, I’m a casual fan in much the same way I expect most NCSU fans are.

If you or anyone else believes/believed Billy Donovan is/was considering leaving Florida, there is nothing that can be done to help you. Same with the Sean Miller saga, Arizona is a better job than NCSU, and he is in the Elite 8. How many times can “restless” Rick Barnes tell us no, 3 and counting I guess? Maybe I’m wrong, and I hope I am, but let’s be serious.

So I guess this is the 2nd public ‘no” so far. I think Sean Miller could have done us a favor and kept it under wraps instead of having his dad make a public statemnet, kind of a punk move on his part. Hopefully the third time will be a charm. I still contend that there are great coaches out there that we could land. I hope DY gets a good one.

I don’t know if Sean Miller’s “refusal” was a punk move….it did clear the air and we depended on Rick Barnes’ brother for such in the past. FUNNY THING, no one seems to be quoting him or asking him what is coming down. I guess they are too busy interview Calapari (really a head job) or Todd Turner….maybe they can get an exclusive, for a FEE, from Steve Lavin and we can do a reality show on the 2006 fiasco.

It is interesting that many of the names on the “dream” list are NOT playing….and some of the SUPPOSED names on the “A” list still are.

If we were going after some of the “idle” “A” listers, then an announcement must be imminent. If, we are going after some of the “still playing” “A” guys, then the news will be baren for a while.

All the folks would have boiled an effigy of Debbie Yow in oil and hung it from the Bell Tower if she had NOT approached Sean Miller. Now that that is over, it is time to see what other “pretty girls” are not on the dance floor and siddle over and ask one of them for a whirl….they may say no….but at least we asked.

It is WAY to early and we have not consumed enough adult beverages to consider the coyotes that are preening themselves in the far, dark corner….the ones who never leave with a “date”….the ones that you GNAW your arm off the next morning to keep from waking her when you get a good look at her in daylight and without an alcohol stupor….

Give Debbie a chance to play this thing out…..

AD Yow does NOT have two strikes against her in her search. Two A-list coaches simply relayed that they don’t want to leave their top-tier or up-and-coming program. Building the program we want will require an investment in a coach and an investment in time to give that coach a time to craft an individual legacy, not simply attempt to match success in their current job.

Where’s the bourbon? Where’s the ice?

I hope DY has some good plans in place at the current moment. We all realize that she clearly said there was not a time line on her search and I have faith that she knows what the deal is. However, we also know at this point coaches are making moves (those not in the tourney). We really must hope she has a solid plan in place or we do stand the chance of missing some top notch coaches. Maybe just maybe our man is still coaching in the tourney. Time will tell who we will snag and whether DY is as good as we seem to think she is.

Regardless of not having a time line, the market for coaches changes the time line. Unless she has someone locked up who is still playing or just lost, it is getting darn close to GO time.

By the way, DY has not “whiffed” on anything. Inquiring about interest through 3rd party, then pursuing other candidates is not a whiff. We have heard nothing from her or her search committee. If you think she “whiffed” maybe you need a wooden bat and a ball without holes in it.

Maybe Miller is in maybe Millers out no one really knows! I can not get intoMillers head but what if after 2 years in zona he just feel obligated to stay. Everything I read about him he is an honorable guy. Then he hits “magic” runs the table wins the title. He is then driving the bus! He can walk away from the zona job or stay and name his price. He will have given that fanbase what they would have happy with in ten years (but in 2). Chances would be very slim for a repeat next year. He could walk with a clear conscience……It could also be said for Donnavon the same. He could give UF a title then decide that if he whats to win in a basketball conf. it is time to go. Money will not move him IMO. he just might be ready for his last BIG challenge!!!!Stranger things have happened!!!

If one more person refers to Shaka Smart as “Shaka Zulu” or “Chaka Khan” I think my head is going to explode. I hope like hell that potential coaches don’t have friends or associates looking around to get a feel for where they might like to coach next because this is the type of thing that makes us look like racist, small-minded, xenophobic assholes.

I really don’t want to offend anyone or single anyone out, but come on…this is just the type of time where we have more outsider/non-NC State types of people perusing these boards and it looks really bad. Just please think a little more each time you post something.

I also find those comments ridiculous. Call him by his real name. He’s at least earned that from us.

The guy has taken his team further than State has been in ages.

guys i have to finally tell you to not worry. my employer happened to be at a dinner party last friday night and mr. wendell murphy was in attendence. mr. murphy was asked about the “search”. i am telling you that we all will be happy. straight from murphy’s mouth was that miller will be a wolfpacker. of course sean has to say at this point that his focus is on the wildcats, his season is still going. look at that overrated coach roy. he was asked about the carolina position and he said that he was not interested again. (9 days later he became the coach)

Wait just a minute here you mean the sky is not falling? Are you saying all of the fretting and worrying are probably not going to produce anything but short fuses and maybe heartburn? Shirley you jest.

  16. WeAreCured 03/26/2011 at 7:55 PM #

To those who think calling Shaka Smart “Chaka Khan” is racist:

It’s a homophonetic word play. It has nothing to do with race. It’s not original, but if your name is Shaka, you’re going to get called Chaka Khan every now and then. It’s not an insult or racist in any way. This is the interwebz. Humor is allowed. If he were the coach at State, and a fan had a sign that said, “Shaka, I’m Every Woman,” would they be racist? No.

  17. theghost 03/26/2011 at 10:49 PM #

^Wait, so word plays aren’t inherently racist? So saying “It’s Miller Time” wasn’t insinuating Sean Miller is an Irish alcoholic? Now I don’t know what to be offended by.

“If you or anyone else believes/believed Billy Donovan is/was considering leaving Florida, there is nothing that can be done to help you.”

Considering leaving UF as in kind of what he did last year? I actually do need some help because IIRC I’m pretty sure he’s done a little more than “consider” leaving UF.

Fine to disagree with me but reference a specific quote I made instead of questioning my intelligence.
