Lowe resigns(J.P. Giglio); Decock: NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens

This is both a sad and exciting day for the NC State community. All the authors of Statefansnation would like to thank Sidney Lowe and his staff for their efforts over the last 5 years. We also wish them the best in the future.

Credit goes to rswilli2(poster from www.Packpride.com for this shot of Mr. Wuf after Sidney’s last home game.

I am just adding links as the day progresses. Sorry for the lack of organization. Read from the bottom up if you want to go in chronological order.

Technician reports:

The source also said that two coaching candidates, Oliver Purnell of DePaul and Mike Brey of Notre Dame, have already expressed interest in in the job and have contacted Yow about the possible vacancy.

However, the N.C. State Athletics department deferred questions about possible coaching candidates to Yow.

NC State needs to pursue Brad Stevens:

Tom Crean has the recruiting pipeline open at Indiana. Purdue’s Matt Painter isn’t going anywhere. John Belein is hanging on at Michigan. So while Stevens may prefer to be patient, he shouldn’t wait until his moment has passed. Butler, after all, didn’t win the Horizon regular-season title this year and had to win its way into the NCAA tournament. The mid-major pyramid is not a stable one; the team at the top can topple at any time.

So if not the Big Ten, where? Why not the ACC? Why not N.C. State?

While the national media continues to denigrate the N.C. State job, for the right guy it has everything: glorious, if faded, tradition; resources and facilities; the challenge of coaching in the ACC and going head-to-head with two giants of the game on an annual basis. It’s a great job for someone willing to embrace that challenge.

Lowe resigns according to J.P. Giglio

RALEIGH — N.C. State needs a new basketball coach.

Sidney Lowe resigned on Tuesday, ending his tenure at his alma mater. He went 86-78 in five seasons, with a 25-55 mark in ACC play….

….Arizona coach Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, and Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, who once worked for Roy Williams at Kansas, are expected to be among Yow’s targets.

Picked to finish fourth in the ACC in the preseason, N.C. State posted a disappointing overall record of 15-16 and finished 10th in the ACC (5-11). After Thursday’s first-round loss to Maryland in the ACC tournament, Lowe spoke passionately about his love of the program and the hope for the program’s future.

“This is my school, I love this school,” Lowe said Thursday night in Greensboro. “It was my hope and dream to come back here and do something special again.”

I have to give Giglio credit for describing the program Sidney inherited accurately instead of trumpeting the world renowned “5 straight NCAAs” that so many lazy journalists have used over the years.

A tweet from DraftExpress regarding CJ Leslie:

DraftExpress: Despite Sidney Lowe’s imminent firing at NC State, C.J. Leslie will NOT be entering this year’s NBA draft, sources tell DraftExpress.

Update 1:45 pm

All over the Internet, TV and talk radio different folks are reporting that the anticipated meeting of Debbie Yow and Sidney Lowe ended around 1 pm today. Driving through campus today, I saw news trucks from TWC 14, WTVD11, and of course we all know that WRAL5 is immediately across Western Blvd from the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Building which is also the location of the Dail Basketball Practice Facility. Everyone is perfectly aware of the end result of this meeting, so none of this is actually news. However, these reports certainly represent the official beginning of the search process. Hang on to your hats.

Reports are that a press conference will occur later today.

    Full link

Despite a flurry of Internet reports that Lowe had been fired, the meeting between Yow and Lowe ended just after 1 p.m. and an official announcement was not expected until late Tuesday afternoon.

If we don’t update the site frequently this afternoon, then please continue to the discussions in this entry and provide links to the press conferences, news articles, tweets, etc.

Here is a link to names thrown out by the N&O.

      Earlier entry

NC State basketball is in a time of transition. We all want a resolution yesterday, so we can be excited about having a new coach in place. It’s Human Nature 101 to fill the gap microanalyzing what’s being said (and not said), and freak out a little bit. This morning, I just wanted to remind everyone that there’s no need.

Sidney Lowe will not return for a sixth season as NC State’s baketball coach. Both Yow and Lowe have known this for some time. As we’ve told you (with varying degrees of directness), the lawyers for each side have been working on the paperwork for quite some time. That part is 100% a done deal.

Yow has made the strategic decision that she doesn’t want the job open long. I’m reasonably confident that NC State’s next head coach still has his dancing shoes on. I’m absolutely certain that our top targets all do. Thus, I would be surprised if the Lowe announcement is made before Thursday morning or Friday afternoon (when game action will absorb most of the local and national media energy). I would be equally surprised if we get any new, credible intel on where we stand with our main target(s) until early next week. Any random nonsense that you hear in between now and early next week is likely just that – random nonsense.

Just relax, and remember that responsible adults are in charge this time. What a refreshing change, yes?

As I said, the chances of Lowe being here in April are about as good as the market being up 10%. The S&P is really down today and the global markets lost big last night and the news from Japan is getting worse. Therefore, I conceded that Lowe is probably gone….but I did NOT rule it out.

Folks do strange things when they fell hurt? If you don’t believe that, ask a divorce lawyer…..People spend big bucks over little petty things. Are they idiots? Don’t know? We went to the HS games but were bored. We bought LTR’s and have bought more under Lowe. My wife said she would rather lose under Lowe than win a few under Herb….and she certainly is NO idiot. We will not give up our LTR’s unles Ms. Yow really blows this.

If the alleged meeting takes place and then there is an announcement, I will assume that she has hired someone. When we will find out his name, who knows.

I was of the “wait and see” crowd assuming that the longer she took, the better our new coach would be as he was still playing. Once you announce a termination, the world starts to look and the more difficult it is to keep a secret…so it will surprise me if there is an announcment, but you never know.

Only time will tell….but I don’t bet on a big BOOTY….the economy impacts the AD’s budget, just like it does yours and mine.

As to the Ex-players, they do get a vote….certainly not as big as the donors, but they are “in the loop” and their advice is “solicited” compared to ours which is NOT solicited. There is also no groundswell from the current players, as there was at UNC, to make a change….quite the contrary. THEY do have a small influence on the decision as well, or so I have been told.

Only time and the rumor mill will tell…..Anybody know where Murphy’s plane is?

  2. Rick 03/15/2011 at 10:20 AM #

“Roo is right about former players supporting Lowe. They do. And his point is well taken that Yow ain’t going to hire someone unless it’s an improvement.”

How can anyone not do better than the worse ACC record in the past 5 years? How can they not do better than one of the worse records in the history on not only NCSU but also the ACC?

So if you believe your statement then there is no question Lowe is gone.

  3. Lock 03/15/2011 at 10:23 AM #

“she would rather lose under Lowe than win a few under Herb”

See, no, actually that makes no sense. Unless you don’t care about wins?

Regardless, I hope these sources are as trustworthy as they are hyped to be.

  4. Boyd 03/15/2011 at 10:34 AM #

There is already a coach hired, we will know the name the day after his team is out of the tournament.

  5. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 10:35 AM #

    Rick,

I am sure that you have looked at the records. HS’s was about the same. Robinson’s was worse. Even the most ardent Lowe Must GO crowd concedes that HS left the cupboard bare. LF messed up big time and killed our 2006 recruiting….so Lowe effectively had NO recruiting class. Only Horner came.

Coach Williams cried all last year about youth and inexperience. On Sunday, reran last years comments. He also said that he was tired of hearing “My Bad” as a player’s excuse. He is now holding his squad responible for their inability to make good decisions.

A lot of folks, pro and con Lowe, have made the same comparison. Some believe the Kool-Aid that our incoming Frosh told us last year….the “Hold ON….we’re coming…tweets”

It was too much hype last year and this year. They did come together for a few games. They also reverted in the same habits as the UNC SS are doing.

Coach Lowe has not made as much progress as I would have liked. I think that he should have gotten in their faces more as do Mikey and Roy. But that is not in his personality or his style. He may well be suited for the Pro’s in a key assistant role….sort of the Monte Kiffin type.

BUT, he has made a lot of improvements. Who else could have even landed the class he did last year with OUR credentials? It takes 4 – 5 years to establish yourself as a recruiter and he scored big last year.

There was far too much expectations. Had he brought this class in the second year, we would not be having this discussion.

ANY Coach, worth even considering, SHOULD or WILL do better next year as the players, assuming they stay and are handled properly WILL mature and will make less mistakes…..but remember Roy is going through the SAME issnes now that plagued him last year and early in the season.

If he does not change the UNC Kool-Aid, they will NOT go far in the NCAA.

SO, lay off the bashing of Coach Lowe and consider the hand he was dealt.

SFN ran a feature article a few days or a week ago….Coach Lowe was DOOMED for failure. Maybe so, but he has put in the effort. He has handled the pressure with poise and grace.

You will NOT find any REAL experts that bash him on his effort and professionalism. He will be picked up by a Pro Team and will not suffer any real financial consequences…..

My only regret is that he was not the dream maker that brought the glory days back. I hope that Ms. Yow does find one and that we are all really HAPPY next year at this time…..but don’t be surprised if we have put our glass slippers in the box after the ACC Tournament and are in the Gymn trying to improve….as our players are, or should be, today.

    Only time will tell…

  6. packplantpath 03/15/2011 at 10:45 AM #

Roy is just being a whiny B!t%h.

I don’t give Lowe credit for effort. I don’t give him credit for recruiting improvements. I don’t care about recruiting unless there is coaching to go with it. There is no excuse for this team being as bad as they are in this ACC. Period.

  7. bradleyb123 03/15/2011 at 10:46 AM #

“One would have to go WAY down the list not to come up with someone better than Lowe. I do not want to be mean. I appreciate his efforts. But come on guys, he was nothing short of atrocious as a head basketball coach. So spare us all with that drivel. We WILL have a better coach than Lowe next year. And you can take that to the bank too.” — Wulfpack

You are right, but that isn’t the point. The goal is not to just find someone that is “better than Sidney.” The point is to find a really GOOD coach, one that we really want.

If the choice is either one more year of Sidney, or a new five-year contract to someone that is only marginally better than Sidney, I’d rather just keep Sidney. That would buy us another year to find someone we REALLY want next year, as opposed to waiting several years to figure out that the next guy really isn’t all that great, either.

I feel like the next coach needs to be a proven guy, one that brings us instant credibility. Can we really get our hopes of for a guy that is just “better than Sidney”?

  8. bradleyb123 03/15/2011 at 10:50 AM #

There is already a coach hired, we will know the name the day after his team is out of the tournament.

Boyd, we see posts like this all the time. It sounds like fact, not what you BELIEVE to be true. Do you have a source that revealed this to you? Or do you just feel strongly that this is the case?

I think if we had already hired someone, some “sources” would have already leaked it to someone in the media.

  9. packplantpath 03/15/2011 at 10:50 AM #

“That would buy us another year to find someone we REALLY want next year, as opposed to waiting several years to figure out that the next guy really isn’t all that great, either.”

No it wouldn’t. That’s not the way coaching searches work. Keeping Lowe would give us another chance to try again next year, but wouldn’t give us any advantage we didn’t have this year. Most people knew Lowe was done 45 days ago. What good would it do to know for 365 days we need a new coach?

There is no great pool of unemployed coaches or coaches looking to change jobs except for about 30-45 days per year. Waiting another year gains us nothing except not having to buy out another failed NCSU coach.

  10. ADVENTUROO 03/15/2011 at 10:53 AM #

    Lock,

We have been attending the ACC Tourney for the past 15 years….sometimes just a few games such as the Les Robinson Invitational and other times the whole event. We now have full books each year and usually stay, as we did Sunday, because we enjoy basketball.

We are also of the Jimmy V Crowd and have a lot of personal attachment to the 1983 team.

We also watched JJ KILL the pack in the final touney game AFTER we had sent Gary, who went on to WIN the National Championship that year, home.

Coach Sendek had no Plan B. When asked about changing defense or offense strategies, he said, “we never practiced that….next question…”

My wife’s point is that there was MORE talent left for HS by Les Robinson that was left for Coach Lowe by HS. At the end of 5 years, we kept HS. This year is, effectively, Coach Lowe’s FOURTH year, based on talent. HS NEVER had to hold an “open tryout” just to fill out the roster to have a “scout team”.

Those that want a change will say all the above is an excuse and I have agreed that Coach Lowe did not hit the ground running.

MY POINT is that IF we keep the squad next year and IF we keep Coach Lowe’s signees, then any mediocre coach should win more games next year…but will NOT make the NCAA. A really GOOD hire will….but I do NOT know if we have the “reputation and resources” to attract such.

I SINCERELY do hope that if Coach Lowe is terminated that his replacement is STILL coaching his team….not just this weekend, but next also.

BUT, if we do NOT land the prize plum, then I for one, will be extremely disappointed. Ms. Yow has said that she will make a decision AFTER she evaluates all the options. I still believe that she will not just make a change because some of the lunatic fringe is unhappy…

SO, I have ruled out the candidate that MY sources said was a “lock” just based on $$’s. HOPE I am wrong….

Will wait and see. I want the PACK to win next year and so on. I will NOT boycot my LTR’s, which are in the Champions Club, like some of the pro HS fans are doing. Maybe even they will come back….

The past five years of Coach Lowe have been FAR better than a continuation of the HS reruns….and I did NOT write emails to anyone or threaten $$’s. HS, in the end, finally smelled the roses and they were not sweet. The ASU fans are making the same rumblings, but don’t expect HS to be leaving….he will stay there for a few more years.

    My thoughts….my life….and my $$’s….

I hope the information in the article below is not correct by saying that State is only now about to hire a search firm.

  12. Wulfpack 03/15/2011 at 10:53 AM #

Yes, the goal is to find someone that is better than Sidney. Unfortunately, that will not be too hard to do. Anyone with any sort of tract record will be an enormous improvement.

Sid recruited well. He coached horribly and did not manage the personalities.

I believe that we have already found our guy and when it is announced, all of this chatter will fall by the wayside and we can all move forward in unison. Good times are ahead.

  13. MattN 03/15/2011 at 10:57 AM #

A coach HAS NOT already been hired. Yow has not *directly* contacted anyone yet, and no search firm has been employed. All contact has been through a 3rd party so far.

  14. BJD95 03/15/2011 at 11:03 AM #

Yow is prepared to hire a coach this offseason. She’s been preparing all winter. No reason to put off the recovery effort another year whatsoever.

As bad as I want to know what’s happening I’m beginning to think we should just close all the B-Ball coaching threads and wait until there’s something to report. The rest have been bad enough, but this one made my head hurt.

I’m predicting that we will have a new coach, said coach will be a good one and that our search will be professional and well handled. That’s about it folks.

^Better question: Is it really necessary to keep posting 1,000-word diatribes in the first place, spouting off about how much more they know than everyone else? I find it hard to believe that anyone who was really privy to the inside scoop would be dropping hints and clues on message boards.

“tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc: Can’t hire a search firm until you have a job opening.”

I was commenting more on the fact that there is no coach in place. State wouldn’t be hiring a firm if Yow had a deal inked. This would lead me to believe that she hasn’t not had a positive response from the names that she wouldn’t need to hire a search firm to find- such as Barnes or Miller.

Just my speculation, but it doesn’t appear that the new coach is already known or that this process will be quick and easy.

I am sure it will be professional and it will lead to a solid hire.

Because it’s helpful to show emphasis in what would otherwise be a wall of text. No need to be a smartass.

  23. Boyd 03/15/2011 at 12:23 PM #

There is no proof that any of the “leaked” information is true. Why wouldn’t you be able to hire a search firm without a job opening. This can’t be the legal reason. Lowe knew he was out the door months ago.

Yes, the goal is to find someone that is better than Sidney. Unfortunately, that will not be too hard to do. Anyone with any sort of tract record will be an enormous improvement. </I.

Of course we're going to hire someone that is better than Sidney. But finding a coach better than Sidney is not difficult, nor is it what we will aspire to. That's my point. We want a GREAT coach (obviously, that means he will be better than Sidney who is NOT a great coach…) The goal is to bring in a program-changer.
