Here…we…go!! (7:15pm update)

We hope that you have noticed the cautious manner with which we have ‘covered’ the current NC State Basketball coaching situation.

Quite frankly, there hasn’t been anything to really ‘cover’ yet, and we are not just going to write a lot of nonesense just for the sake of writing.  We are not going to pass off speculation as “inside information.”  This is in contrast to other websites that may look to exploit the current situation to generate pageviews and premium memberships.

Despite what oblivious media members may say, I am stepping out on a limb and predicting that NC State will have a coach in place before next weekend.

As ‘ushum’ said on our message boards:

things are starting to heat up for real now, this week is going to be a blast…everything before now was just qualifying, this week is the daytona 500..

Ushum is correct.  Everything we know points to the fact that almost all of the quote-unquote “information” out in the public arena up through yesterday has been bullshit — tales told by message board idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.  Likely much of this “information” has been put out (or has been allowed to stay out) for the purpose of misdirection.

SFN has learned that State committed early on to give interviews to certain coaches (2 big-name coaches in particular), and those interviews had not been able to happen as of yesterday.  Until those interviews happened, the process could not begin to unfold.  However, given the way the games have played out this weekend, the process can now begin to develop, and we expect it to develop very quickly. (Understand that when I say “interview,” the contacts may not take the form of traditional sit-down meetings.)

So, now that everything can begin, let’s take a look at what is going on this morning.  These items were posted as Tweets on the Sports Illustrated website this morning

@LakeRosenberg Ben considered DePaul last year. He would absolutely consider Texas.

@goodmanonfox @GottliebShow Here’s a list of folks who would consider Texas: Everybody except K , Roy and Self.

Hmmm.  Why would there be such specific speculation about the Texas job, and why just now?  Expect a lot more of this type of information to be flying around in the next couple days.  Much of it will require a lot more analysis than the “traditional local media” can give — they tend to jump on the hot name de jour and write endlessly about that one guy until the next name pops up, when they switch to writing about him.  The situation is much more complex than that.

Stay tuned to SFN as we try to make sense and explain the information as it develops over the next week (or less).

***4:00 Update***
Some very recent tweets highlight the new direction and pace of this story — as we expected.  Here is the most notable.

Tim Brando’s Twitter has this:

On the ground at home and hearing some rumblings about a potential knockout hire at NCST.Unlike the last search this one not as public.Smart 30 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

——————————————-

***6:00 Update***
From SFN: I just noticed that a lot of people are reading/interpreting our original comments as some kind of a nod to Rick Barnes. Please allow me to be more clear — that is NOT our intent. Our previous comments were designed to explain that the first two weeks of NCAA Tournament play served almost as ‘gating’ items for our search — not to focus on Barnes.

Brando’s tweet refers to a rumor that has been out there for a while about a HOME RUN NAME that has been discretely kept on the down-low. That jives exactly with our point that things get started in earnest NOW.

Ultimately, we expect NC State will either nail one of three BIG NAMES in the next week…or we will end up on “List Two”. The morons that have been reporting that NC State was already on some kind of second list (with names like Shaka Smart and others) just shows how much they know — nada.

***7:15 Update***
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that (supposed) possible N.C. State target Chris Mooney has signed a 10-year extension with Richmond (AJC.com link). Scratch him off the list of potential B-list candidates.

wallacepark….might I inquire as to the origin of your username if it isn’t anything too personal?

  2. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 4:52 PM #

so far the people we’ve talked about that are now available include “billy the kid,” RB and miller right? i still believe none of us know jack until the press release..

my opinion of shaka smart has certainly changed after watching him take down several big conference teams..as listed on poster boards by one of his in game fans today. there’s still no comparison b/t him and a rick barnes though. shaka has great energy.. his players said they feed off of it.. i think that is great. taking a junk yard dog like smart and putting him in the ACC/westminster dog show is a huge jump. i still say he’s a better fit for a gT.

if we’re to get barnes.. in ten years or maybe less as he retires.. then we have sean miller, stevens, smarts, or whomever else. if there’s an oppurtunity to get RB! GET HIM! my new rankings are as follows:

barnes, donovan, miller, few, stevens… and then alot of the rest are about the same.. GET BARNES OR DONOVAN!

    HellFishTat,

Rick Barnes and Texas beat UNC this year.

    ^^donovan said no to kentucky..””

kentucky is also dirty as hell and in the same conference right?

  5. MA Wolfpack 03/27/2011 at 4:57 PM #

BJD, completely agree and glad to hear others are in play.

  6. jbark 03/27/2011 at 4:58 PM #

If Tim Brando is on “on the ground, at home”, that puts him in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Shreveport is right on the border with…Texas.

Apparently I need my head examined because I would rather have Smart than Barnes. As far as Miller or Donovan I think that is just a Pipe dream.

  8. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 5:00 PM #

Rick Barnes and Texas beat UNC this year.””

he’s also got them lined up to play on an aircraft carrier this coming season.

insert rick barnes and we will lift his postseason runs to championships!

    w.i.t.h.

If Rick Barnes doesn’t unite the fan base, we should all be institutionalized.

“Just remember…a guy who has a miracle run to the final four could be this years Paul Hewitt….just saying”

What I remember is Hewitt riding a couple of hot hands – Jarred Jack and Travis Best – through out the tournament. I don’t see VCU riding any one player like that.

Who knows, maybe Shaka Smart’s a flash in the pan. Maybe he’s the reincarnation of John Wooden.

This is a very impressive tournament run by VCU, no matter how you slice it.

Hoping to have some Barnes news later tonight.

I have to admit, my sources have been surprisingly trustworthy. I was beginning to think that they knew very little (which is still probably the case…to a degree) or were told to let out information that was not entirely true. But, if the Barnes rumors are true, then they have been right on the money.

  12. motorhead 03/27/2011 at 5:16 PM #

New A-list coach, Duke and UNC both losing. That would be a TRIFECTA.

  13. jbark 03/27/2011 at 5:20 PM #

I love coaching searches. They let me come up with plotlines more far fetched than soap operas, the WWE, and Star Trek Voyager combined.

    Here is my crackpot theory:

    * NC State talks to Barnes’ father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate. Roommate says he will listen.

    * Search firm / Yow has conversation with Barnes. Barnes agrees in principle to become the next coach at State.

    * Out of respect, Barnes meets with his AD and notifies him of his intentions. Out of respect, he will not announce until Texas has his replacement locked in. He also offers to deflect any rumors via his surrogates.

    * NC State put out smokescreen after smokescreen. David Glenn is captured and brainwashed Clockwork Orange style into thinking Barnes is out.

    * Since the contacts on the Texas side are not as air tight as the State camp, word starts to leak out after Texas makes some phone calls to potential candidates and boosters. The Buzz Peterson camp is also not buttoned down, so word of him being a replacement starts to leak there.

    * Presser by the middle of the week announcing Barnes as the next coach at State.

  14. highstick 03/27/2011 at 5:24 PM #

Brando? You sure that didn’t come from Marlin Brando?

  15. StateFans 03/27/2011 at 5:25 PM #

Brando is referring to the rumors that have been out there for a while about a HOME RUN NAME that has been discretely kept on the down-low.

We will either nail one of three BIG NAMES in the next week…or we will end up on “List Two”.

The morons that have been reporting/thinking that we were already on list two show just how much they know — nada.

  16. Wolfy__79 03/27/2011 at 5:35 PM #

it will be nice to point the finger back at the morons this time!

  17. Tampa-Pack 03/27/2011 at 5:40 PM #

I knew SFN was sitting back being very quiet during the past week or so, and this is exactly why…. so three BIG NAMES must be SM, RB, or BD, right? That pretty much goes without saying, or is there another BIG fish out there no one is naming at this time? Go Woodson, Yow, and the PACK!!!

Can’t wait for the press conference!!

  18. hellfishtat 03/27/2011 at 5:42 PM #

    Boyd,

That is correct. I’m not saying he could beat Roy or K. I just want us to start anew. Since I became a NCSU fan in 1972 we have more often than not hired someone because of past ties to the University. Even our new AD (and I am not saying ANYTHING bad about Debbie Yow, I like her). I just wish we would get a real “fresh start”. Someone young that could get us back to being relevant and challange for, and then win a couple ACC Titles and get us ready for the next (next) coach. Take Sean MIller (I’d love to have him), if he coached here for 10 yrs and did good/great when the Pitt job came up and he wanted it, we’d be ready for the next guy. I want to Debbie to think about the next 24yrs. That’s how long I’ve waited for State to “come back”. When we get there, I don’t want to slip back to what we are hopefully just emerging from.

  19. quypack93 03/27/2011 at 5:48 PM #

no need to point fingers. if that is the case, state fan should rejoice. no need to go negative. we have too much to look forward to be wasting our time pointing fingers. media needs stories, good or bad. believe me, when we will be relevant again, they will talk about how rich a history state has. they will be falling on each other talking about case, thompson, burleson, sloan, V, souther conference, etc… they are like ducks, they go in herds.

  20. tjfoose1 03/27/2011 at 5:53 PM #

Every group has their share of the idiotic and ignorant.

  21. roandaddy 03/27/2011 at 5:55 PM #

He could have Jesus as our coach and people would complain that he is too polarizing. Just give us a coach who everyone knew of over a month ago. Wasn’t Amato a “flash in the pan” type hire… do we really want to go that route??

  22. Wufpacker 03/27/2011 at 6:00 PM #

Bear in mind that most universities try to be respectful and often ask permission to speak with another university’s under contract employee. I wouldn’t take Yow for someone who will wish to appear to be sucker punching anyone, and if/when she does ask such permission the circle widens and the chance for leaks increase.

That’s one reason the final four is such a good cover. Time between asking and contacting can be more timely performed, thus getting ahead of the story.

  23. newt 03/27/2011 at 6:03 PM #

“Hmmm. Why would there be such specific speculation about the Texas job, and why just now?”

Yeah, that makes me think you’re talking about Rick Barnes. Crazy me.

  24. BJD95 03/27/2011 at 6:05 PM #

Eleven point lead for the Shadow Pack. Tis a good day to be a Wolfpacker.

Like the Russian guy would say “epic win.”

  25. Wufpacker 03/27/2011 at 6:05 PM #

” He could have Jesus as our coach and people would complain that he is too polarizing. ”

He would be. Billy Donovan will unite the Wolfpack faithful much more completely.
