Here…we…go!! (7:15pm update)

We hope that you have noticed the cautious manner with which we have ‘covered’ the current NC State Basketball coaching situation.

Quite frankly, there hasn’t been anything to really ‘cover’ yet, and we are not just going to write a lot of nonesense just for the sake of writing.  We are not going to pass off speculation as “inside information.”  This is in contrast to other websites that may look to exploit the current situation to generate pageviews and premium memberships.

Despite what oblivious media members may say, I am stepping out on a limb and predicting that NC State will have a coach in place before next weekend.

As ‘ushum’ said on our message boards:

things are starting to heat up for real now, this week is going to be a blast…everything before now was just qualifying, this week is the daytona 500..

Ushum is correct.  Everything we know points to the fact that almost all of the quote-unquote “information” out in the public arena up through yesterday has been bullshit — tales told by message board idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.  Likely much of this “information” has been put out (or has been allowed to stay out) for the purpose of misdirection.

SFN has learned that State committed early on to give interviews to certain coaches (2 big-name coaches in particular), and those interviews had not been able to happen as of yesterday.  Until those interviews happened, the process could not begin to unfold.  However, given the way the games have played out this weekend, the process can now begin to develop, and we expect it to develop very quickly. (Understand that when I say “interview,” the contacts may not take the form of traditional sit-down meetings.)

So, now that everything can begin, let’s take a look at what is going on this morning.  These items were posted as Tweets on the Sports Illustrated website this morning

@LakeRosenberg Ben considered DePaul last year. He would absolutely consider Texas.

@goodmanonfox @GottliebShow Here’s a list of folks who would consider Texas: Everybody except K , Roy and Self.

Hmmm.  Why would there be such specific speculation about the Texas job, and why just now?  Expect a lot more of this type of information to be flying around in the next couple days.  Much of it will require a lot more analysis than the “traditional local media” can give — they tend to jump on the hot name de jour and write endlessly about that one guy until the next name pops up, when they switch to writing about him.  The situation is much more complex than that.

Stay tuned to SFN as we try to make sense and explain the information as it develops over the next week (or less).

***4:00 Update***
Some very recent tweets highlight the new direction and pace of this story — as we expected.  Here is the most notable.

Tim Brando’s Twitter has this:

On the ground at home and hearing some rumblings about a potential knockout hire at NCST.Unlike the last search this one not as public.Smart 30 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

——————————————-

***6:00 Update***
From SFN: I just noticed that a lot of people are reading/interpreting our original comments as some kind of a nod to Rick Barnes. Please allow me to be more clear — that is NOT our intent. Our previous comments were designed to explain that the first two weeks of NCAA Tournament play served almost as ‘gating’ items for our search — not to focus on Barnes.

Brando’s tweet refers to a rumor that has been out there for a while about a HOME RUN NAME that has been discretely kept on the down-low. That jives exactly with our point that things get started in earnest NOW.

Ultimately, we expect NC State will either nail one of three BIG NAMES in the next week…or we will end up on “List Two”. The morons that have been reporting that NC State was already on some kind of second list (with names like Shaka Smart and others) just shows how much they know — nada.

***7:15 Update***
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that (supposed) possible N.C. State target Chris Mooney has signed a 10-year extension with Richmond (AJC.com link). Scratch him off the list of potential B-list candidates.

    Ringo,

I was mistaken about who was the coach. There was a very lengthly article in Playboy back in the 70’s about “Lucking Out” and getting recruiting gifts. Here is a link.

    http://books.google.com/books?id=WW7EgBfQn_MC&pg=PA186&lpg=PA186&dq=mike+gminski+duke+recruiting&source=bl&ots=nYAIxMhPt5&sig=mTp_MGbGc6OZfx_6HYRAv0p2QoU&hl=en&ei=J6CQTfeoBdKgtwfQu62ICQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CDkQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=mike%20gminski%20duke%20recruiting&f=false

It is VERY long, but if you google the following

    mike gminski duke recruiting

Look at the hits you get and choose the Google Books one.

There is about two pages on the G-Man. If you read it, you will find that he DID skip his Sr Yr in HS to AVOID the recruiting hassle. He wrote to Phil Foster and was NOT a Duke Recruiting Target. He was an academic ALL STAR in high school. He entered Duke when he was 17.

You are also correct that Coach K never coached the G-Man. The 1979-80 season was Phil Foster’s last year and also the G-Man’s senior year. Coach K was hired and the rest is history.

Good catch, but I still stand by my comment that folks like Shaka Smart (Magna Cum Laude) and Herbie (Suma Cum Laude) and Gabe and Tom McMillan do NOT come along very often….

I had read the following before and do NOT vouch for the accuracy of the link.

QUOTE….Smart was the epitome of the term “student-athlete” while playing basketball at Kenyon College (Gambier, Ohio). After spurning acceptance into some Ivy League schools, Smart decided on Kenyon so he could play basketball. As a player in high school and college, Smart took over the role of “coach” on the floor as the unselfish point guard was always looking to create shots for teammates while possessing an unmatched love for the game.

“He was always a pass-first guy and the ultimate team player. He seemed to get more satisfaction in the assist than points for himself,” recalls Bavery. “Shaka’s junior year we lost at the buzzer in overtime in the sectional semifinals. His senior year we were upset at sectionals and that may have been a potential state championship team. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a player take a loss harder.”

Smart graduated magna cum laude from Kenyon earning Academic All-American honors. Most agree that he was going to be successful in anything he pursued. Lucky for the game of basketball, he opted for coaching. UNQUOTE

I usually DO NOT just write things via the Annual Extraction Method, but as age progresses, my disk drive (brain) occassionally has a FAT error.

Your comments about YEARS is a bit “overdone” also….perhaps you too, have a FAT error on your own disk drive.

Wonder if graduation with HONORS is one of DY’s “A” lister requirements….????

” The notion that every kid Les recruited was more student and less athlete than any other school in the ACC is ludicrous. ”

Yes it is. And by the way….Adventuroo didn’t say that. You might want to reread what he said, then figure out where your strawman came from….assuming you didn’t just do that intentionally.

    Quypack93,

Perhaps you ought to find a copy of Tim Peeler’s NCSU BB; 100 Years of Innovation and read the Valvano Chapeter and the Robinson Chapter. Our own Administration (As Peeler puts it….Jealously over how much Valvano makes and the success of JTV Enterprises) with St. Monteith at the helm imposed a GPA Average that NO OTHER ACC School or any other UNC school had.

Robinson, very candidly, talks about how other coaches (local and in the ACC) were using our OWN SELF IMPOSED (to keep the BB program from becoming the EVIL EMPIRE) rules against us. Eventually, and I do NOT remember when, the restrictions were lifted, but that is like having a broken leg and being in the hospital for two years and then expecting to compete with your fellow students in a 100 yard dash.

SO, I stand by my contention that we probably have higher standards for our student athletes (and maybe rightly so) that the other ACC Schools…and I still stand by my comments about the Majors displaced during the 11 games that I watched at the ACC Tourney.

    The beat goes on….

This thread was such a tease.

  5. highstick 03/28/2011 at 5:11 PM #

Wasn’t it Bill Foster versus Phil Foster? Not nitpickin, but I think that’s right.

  6. ADVENTUROO 03/28/2011 at 6:41 PM #

Phil, Bill, Larry, the other Darryl, or Darryl..maybe Curley or Moe….Can’t keep up with them….but Highstick, you will TRULY enjoy this. I fot an email that I am posting and am awaiting a response from a female who is a few years younger and a male who graduated in 1978.

I sent the EXACT story of the Carmichael saga that I posted here and here is what a 1960 or so graduate wrote back….please sit down before you read it….my DW is still laughing….

QUOTE My experience was exactly as you describe, Adventuroo. It was a traumatic experience for me. I was a geek/nerd with no athletic skills and I couldn’t swim a lick. So you can imagine how this ritual impacted me. And the getting naked in front of hundreds of people I didn’t know wasn’t how I planned to enter college. This day was to have later repercussions for my brother who also went to State. He went to State after he got out of the Army which was about 1969. I had told him my story about taking the swimming test so when it came time for him to take the test, he got naked ran out to the pool only to discover it was now coed. He was an immediate role model for his freshman class. And I am not making this up.

1959 or 1960 NCSU Graduate – BS IE. UNQUOTE

I might add that my friend was about 5-10 and probably weighed well over 200 pounds and also felt that pleated trousers were his best friend. He is a great guy, a real wit….just not “Mr. America”.

So, the beat goes on…and I will try to remember WHICH Foster coached at Duke and also to have a Foster’s in rememberance of my Freshman Orientation.

Live long and prosper, Highstick…or is it HighStick?
