Dave Glenn says 1st offer to Rick Barnes last time was for less $$$ than he was making at Texas

Glenn on Barnes(not exact words):

-State threw the kitchen sink at Barnes the 2nd offer. Here is the difference between doing it professionally and doing it poorly. The last offer to Barnes was a huge offer. The reality is that the 1st offer from State to Barnes was less than he was making at the Longhorns. Are you kidding me? You want to alienate a candidate? Are you kidding me?….when you are a lesser job, a lesser company then you have to do the convincing. How can your 1st offer be less money than what you are currently making when State was a lateral move where he and his family were established?

The idea that your 1st offer was less compensation is embarrassing and laughable. If you act like a buffoon, then people won’t want to latch themselves onto a buffoon and the rest of the search snowballed from that point with embarrassing public nos.

Yow won’t make the same mistakes.

Sean Miller & I have had good talks. He has zero interest in any job openings. We will have no further comment. Let’s go beat Memphis!

He is about to interview Mike Decourcy who wrote this article yesterday saying Sean Miller wasn’t interested in the NC State job.

With the N.C. State head coaching job at last open, Arizona coach Sean Miller will not be interested in the position.

A source close to the U of A program told Sporting News that Miller does not want the job of replacing Sidney Lowe, who resigned Tuesday. Miller is pleased with the rapid development of the program at Arizona, which resulted in a Pacific-10 Conference championship in his second season.

So far today, Dave Glenn has called Debbie Yow one of the best athletic directors in the country despite what Gary Williams and journalist/Dookie John Feinstein have had to say about her.

Nothing earth shattering here. Decourcy gave the same spiel why coaches won’t take our job. He mentioned that Sean Miller has no reason to leave although I didn’t hear him mention family ties to NC that definitely exist. He also mentioned UNC and Duke being obstacles even though Sendek’s own performance at ASU has proven that being near Duke and UNC was actually a huge advantage for him as a coach. Sendek’s recruiting has dropped off significantly since he moved thousands of miles away from Roy Williams and Coach K.

He did mention Mick Cronin as a good hire for NC State.

I saw someone put this together somewhere else that highlights just how attractive NC State is to top level recruits even with boring personalities like Herb Sendek and a failing, inexperienced coach like Sidney Lowe.

Here are Sendek’s classes:

1st class – Thornton(top 60), Wells, Gainey (Sendek got the commitment from Thornton)
2nd class – Miller(top40), Inge(top 60), Ron Kelly(top 60), C. Williams. R. Thomas, Ron Anderson(?),
3rd class – Adam Harrison(#25), K. Bean(#64), Anthony Grundy, Anthony Grundy(1st team all-ACC)
4th class – M. Williams(#33), D. Wilkins(#11), C. Crawford(#81)
5th class – S. Sherril(#38), M. Melvin(#98), Mike Bell(#95), Trey Guidry
6th class – Hodge(#7), Evtimov, Powell(#65), Collins and Watkins(#60)
7th class – Flatt, Mejia, Simons, Bennerman(#84)
8th class – Atsur(top 50), Mike O’Donell
9th class – Grant(#78), C. Simmons(#34), Brackman(#60)
10th class – Costner(#22), Fells(#35), McCauley
11th class – D. Werner(#94), L. Davis, D. Horner

Lowe’s top 100 players:
#9 JJ Hickson
#62 Tracy Smith
#60 Richard Howell
#80 D. Painter
#12 CJ Leslie
#22 Ryan Harrow
#26 Lorenzo Brown

The info about the Barnes offer has been relayed on SFN multiple times over the last 5 years, but now DG has said it aloud on the radio.

Yet another reason why I come here first and hit the talking heads/news sources second 🙂

  3. PackInsider 03/16/2011 at 2:22 PM #

    Thanks Lee.

The beauty of it is that now, 5 years later, Barnes is even less likely to leave Texas. So Fowler pretty much f’d us out of ever getting him again. It would take a GD miracle to pull him away now.

That’s the kind of crap that should get an AD fired. That coaching search should have landed Lee Fowler in the crapper, just based on the Rick Barnes fiasco alone. But the whole thing was a fireable offense. Yet we hung on to him for 4 more years. Amazing.

  4. sautz 03/16/2011 at 2:26 PM #

Can’t we as fans file a class action lawsuit against Fowlup to force him to personally pay back every cent we put into the program while he was grossly and willfully mismanaging it?
One of you lawyers please get working on that 🙂

Makes me wonder if Lee ever really wanted Barnes to come to State. Afraid he would show up his friend Herb and make Lee look bad for holding on to Herb for so many years.

  6. Daily Update 03/16/2011 at 2:29 PM #

^Barnes or Cal taking the State job would contradict everything that Lee Fowler talked about in regards to competing with UNC and Duke.

  7. JeremyH 03/16/2011 at 2:38 PM #

I wonder if the next NC State basketball coach knows that he is the next NC State basketball coach.

  8. nav 03/16/2011 at 2:40 PM #

^I would love to think so because that means we got who we wanted.

  9. happypackdad 03/16/2011 at 2:42 PM #

Herb’s recruiting was hepled by NCSU being in the ACC. He was a good, not great, recruiter. Sid was a better recruiter. (Archie top40? LMAO)

I don’t see Barnes or Miller leaving flagship school/programs.

There’s no way Jed was clever enough to intentionally screw up his own coaching search. He just had to act naturally.

Packinsider: Soon after the hiring of Sidney Lowe and then TOB, Fowler got an actual contract extension that we are still paying for today. He got a longer extension than a more successful AD at Boston Collage.

His extension was unprecedented and totally undeserved. I wrote about it here.

Gregg with two g’s is going to be on 99.9 at 5:00 if anybody wants to boycott the show this afternoon. I know what I plan to be doing at 5. Listening to my ipod.

I remember hearing that Fowler was told to make his best offer first and that he low balled Barnes. I do not remember hearing that it was lower than Barne’s current salary.

As for Calipari, with UNC-CH’s troubles this year, I’m glad he wasn’t roaming our sidelines. I would have been very nervous because you know UNC-CH would be pointing the finger at us.

Good lord people this isn’t 1911. Having family all the way back in the eastern territory isn’t all that much reason to hitch up the wagon and hit the dusty trail back to Raleigh.

Family being in Raleigh would probably be the last thing on his list. I would suspect if the family misses each other this much, the one’s not making $2 million a year and PAC 10 champs would move out west.

Miller has earned about 5 million in pay with signing bonus over the last two years. I’m sure he can afford at least a coach ticket and check a couple of bags at least once or twice a year.

And I’m sure AZ could find another million to keep him if they need to.

I think Miller would be a great hire but I think he is probably happy where he is.

I googled Mike Brey and some articles came up about an alleged affair he had with an Indiana reporter last year. It was somewhat of a scandal. Do we think Brey is on the short list, and if so, does he have any baggage?

  16. nav 03/16/2011 at 3:17 PM #

^As long as he wins he can have all the affairs he wants. lol.

“”I googled Mike Brey and some articles came up about an alleged affair he had with an Indiana reporter last year.””

I thought that was Ben Hansbroughs mother. . . .

No wait, that was Roy Williams . . .

I am not sure I want any coach who would “show interest” while his team is still playing since past behaviors are good representation of future actions and I don’t want them doing the same thing to us.

Yow basically said the exact same thing in her press conference. I don’t know if Miller is interested, but I am glad he would deny any interest at this time. He should concentrate on winning…

  19. nycfan 03/16/2011 at 3:31 PM #

I had heard from folks in Texas at the time (and believe I posted in the post-mortem of the Lowe hiring) that State made an “insulting” offer to Barnes and then didn’t seem to understand that he had told them to go make a great flying leap as a result, coming back with questions and hints about sweeteners etc. long after Barnes told them to take a hike. Didn’t hear it was below what Barnes was making, but did hear that it was weirdly lowball and by the time State came back with a second offer he had zero interest in talking to them.

  20. Lunatic Fringe 03/16/2011 at 3:36 PM #

You could write a book on how Lee Fowler mishandled the basketball search just based on what we know. There is no telling what other dumbass things took place in the search that are not known.

  21. hball57 03/16/2011 at 3:38 PM #

I really hope it’s not Barnes. I know many have a great fascination with him; I am just not as enamored with him as many of you. I also would love someone a little younger, as I want someone who is really getting going when K and Roy retire, not someone who might retire soon after they do.

Of all the possible candidates out there, Rick Barnes to me is the one who’d be the best fit for this school and fan base. I have no idea if he’d come here, but if he did, no other hire would bring the passion back again to this lifeless program like Barnes would.

  24. Classof89 03/16/2011 at 3:51 PM #

Leave it to @#$% Fowler to treat the hiring of a coach like he was haggling with some fat guy in a plaid suit over a used car…

Come to think of it, put Fowler in a plaid suit, and he’d look and act like a used car salesman…

Add Chris Wright to Sendek’s 11th recruiting class.
