Open Game Entry – Pack goes for three in a row

NC State travels to College Park this evening seeking to extend a two game ACC win streak.

NC State (14-11, 4-7 ACC) hits the road Sunday, traveling to Maryland (16-10, 5-6 ACC) for a nationally televised game against the Terps. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Net.

The Terrapins (16-10, 5-6 ACC) have dropped two straight, at Boston College and at Virginia Tech, but sit at 12-3 at home on the season.

This game will be televised on Fox Sports Net with Ron Thulin (play-by-play), Dan Bonner (analyist) and Debbie Antonelli (sideline).

From the ever growing file titled, “What a difference two decades makes”

Sunday’s meeting will mark the 147th in a series that dates back to the 1924-25 season. Maryland has a slight lead in the series, 74-72. NC State has won just five of the last 22 meetings, and eight of the last 40 dating back to the 1991-92 campaign. Prior to that streak, the Pack had won nine of the previous 12 matchups.

Maryland has won seven straight in the series and NC State will be looking to defeat the Terrapins for the first time under Sidney Lowe. Maryland won both regular season matchups last season.

In 2009, Maryland won in Raleigh, 71-60, and again at the ACC Tournament in Atlanta, 74-69. In 2008, Maryland won in College Park by 14 points. The Terps won both contests in 2007 as well, winning by 15 in Raleigh then by 20 in College Park.

Prior to 2007, the Wolfpack was on a three-game winning streak against the Terrapins, winning the only contest in 2006 (62-58 in Raleigh) and sweeping Maryland during the 2004- 05 regular season for the first time since 1988-89.

Maryland posts a 37-21 mark against the Pack in College Park, and 4-2 in games played at the Comcast Center. NC State lost its first trip to the Comcast Center in 2003, but then won two straight in 2004 and 2005. Maryland has won the last three (2007, 2008 and 2010).

Another fine coaching job by Sidney. Where were the time outs when the collaspe started. But I guess some will be content to know we hung with them for a while, and we should keep you another year. I trust Debbie Yow has much more ability to see the sad situation Sid has the program in, and that change is necessary, and we have the smurfs on Wednesday, I guess all you 2 game winning streak fans are back to reality. Mediocrity!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like we’ve finally, officially quit. Standing around with 30 seconds on the clock. Disgusting.

  3. swamppack 02/20/2011 at 8:14 PM #

They added a little bit of suspense before this collapse though, they waited till the last 4 minutes.

You have to wonder what the coaches are thinking when things start to unravel. Do they not see the train wreck coming or are they just clueless in how to stop it?

  5. swamppack 02/20/2011 at 8:18 PM #

^Clueless on how to stop it.

Everyone knows a coaching change is inevitable at this point but is still tough to wait it out. I hope they win as many as possible but I do look forward to a new direction very soon. Best of luck against Papa Smurf on Wednesday! Still planning to watch but not very excited.

No doubt. We were down 10 with 40.4 seconds to go and didn’t try to foul or anything to win. There was still hope for at least one more possesion to make an attempt. That told me the exact state of things. Lowe has quit. It is over for him. The fat lady may not be singing but she is certainly warming up.

“What NC State has shown me they need to do is play better defensively as a team” – Dan Bonner

That’s key #1 to why this is likely the last leg of the Sidney Lowe farewell tour. (Rebounding follows good defense naturally)

We’ll probably lose to both UNC & FSU / tossups vs. GA Tech & UVA, which would put us at 6-10 at best. Good news is we’re 99.99% guaranteed a better hire via a better process than last time we were looking for a new coach.

This game was winnable. Another lost opportunity. I feel bad for the players. The put up a great effort today.

“Purdue coach Matt Painter. I’m just sayin’.”

Why would he leave Purdue? I’m just askin’.

Beating the holes on wednesday would be the end of the season for me. It would give me a shiny moment to hold on to till next year which I hope we go into with a new coach and a new start.

You say, what if the Pack makes some sort of miracle run after that game? Get real.

When the holes won by two yesterday I gritted my teeth and shook my head. I literally hate that program. He did not specify any details but Friedlander in a column about that game in the Star News this morning said Xarolina needed a missed foul call at the end of that game to win. Anybody see it? Is that true?

here is what i don’t get.. it’s either perimeter shots or inside five feet. there’s no offense between the two?

obviously the defense isn’t good at all allowing teams to shoot lights out as md did tonight?

…and then after each of the last two timeouts followed very poor shot selection?? three’s or really forced should be layups? i just really don’t understand at all. there is no strategy??

good job fellas. I know we lost, but that was the best game we have played all year. If they keep playing like this they might beat UNC at home and win enough games to get to the NIT. Keep this up and Sid keeps his job. I was impressed this evening.

^ntm not extending the game and never have understood what he was doing all together…

i caught a bit of the unx game but didn’t see that particular foul call/no call? i don’t doubt it a bit.. at unx.. it’s almost a given. they were really bogged down by bc, i wasn’t suprised at the result.

A little surprised by the negative response overall to this game. I thought State overall continued the quality play I saw in the Clemson win. A solid if flawed performance on the road. Too little too late, to be sure, but CJL and Smith both played well and Wood found his stroke.

I am proud of our players for the most part in this game…Someone pointed out how this was eerily similar to Syracuse…I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it was impressive though…offensively, yes…defensively, we allowed a team to shoot 60% for the game at 71% for a half…

I am not upset though…I am numb to wins and losses at this point…just want to see our underclassmen improve and our seniors go out playing their hearts out…

  18. Wulfpack 02/20/2011 at 8:45 PM #

Painter is NOT leaving Purdue. And if he were, it sure as hell would not be for NCSU.

  19. Wulfpack 02/20/2011 at 8:47 PM #

Sorry, I don’t get too excited losing to an NIT team. We were great on O. Horrendous on D. That equals a loss to a middle of the road NIT team. Par for the course around here.

  20. Wolfy__79 02/20/2011 at 9:02 PM #

suprising comments from some of you.. to me it’s not intended to be negative. this team will probably earn a bid to the nit.. but we cannot continue to end up in the nit.. it’s not getting us anywhere. there’s no gaurantee that we wouldn’t be having this conversation about lowe’s tenure next year. i was all for keeping him… despite a brutal non conference record.. i thought it could have panned out for acc success.. after another brutal stretch in the first half of the acc.. that pretty much took the last bit of wind out of my sails..

in my book, he needed to have these guys on the plus side of five hundy right now and all the way through the season..

as far as this game goes.. sure they played hard and were in it for the majority of the game.. by some really sharp shooting.. but nothing else. we cannot defend inside of five feet.. inside fifteen feet or even inside halfcourt!! to look at this game alone, it has no impact on the rest of the five years.. a young team on the road.. ok.. there continues to be oppurtunity after oppurtunity for this situation to remedy itself.. but it is becoming crazier by the minute at this point.

The fat lady has already sung. She sang loud and long 3 years ago following the ACC Tourney first round loss to Miami. But unfortunately for Wolfpack Nation, NCSU administrators refused to hear.

By God, I bet they hear us now.

Bad coaching isn’t difficult to spot. If you can’t coach at the ACC level after two seasons, why would three or four more seasons change that? And please don’t throw up Coach K’s first few years at me. I followed Duke closely then, and although they lost a lot of games from ’80-’83, they were NOTHING like what Wolfpack basketball has become. Those Duke teams were 17-13, 10-17 and 10-17, but they played with confidence, they played great team defense, they hustled, they employed great shot selection, and they didn’t keep repeating stupid mistakes. And oh yeah, they knew how to take a charge.

We’ve got UNC coming in this week, and we’ve still got folks on here calling for fan restraint when it comes to firing the coach. How many more times does our team have to quit before the button is pushed?

Mixed feelings about this because I know State played hard, Jordan Williams is a beast and I expect us to Win more than lose the rest of the season. Im really emotionally wore out over this team, but atleast we have a chance against UNC with our recent play. I would love to see Sidney succeed at State, but I’m just not sure it can happen. It hurts me to say that cause I pull for him as much as anyone. With that said………Go Pack and good luck the rest the season!!!

It is amazing to me to see the two vastly different views about Sid’s job status on this sight.

I see no logical thinking what-so-ever behind the possibility at keeping Sid after this year. From my view point I just cannot comprehend anyone even considering it. This is coming from someone that by no means is in a hate-fest against Sid. On the contrary. I love what I see of his character and deeply respect his love for NCSU and what he has meant to the school.

Now for the ones who don’t agree with me, i’m thankful for your opinion too. Keep bringing it on. That’s what makes this country great and on a smaller scale the sharing of ideas under wise leadership can bring NCSU b-ball back to greatness.

All I want at this point is a lovely parting gift on Wednesday night.

^jordan williams is a beast… that’s exactly my problem.. before him it was vasqueeze, travels handsbra…etc. why haven’t any of our players been a beast instead of beasted… we may learn to compete, but on an individual basis we get to give the beast a pedicure.. last year it was all about one man teams beating the hell out of us… f.e. mclinton… md…

our next coach needs to be a beast…
