State (11-5, 1-1) @ Florida State (12-5, 2-1)
TV: 4pm ACC Network (FOX50 in the Triangle)

For those of you that can’t watch or will be watching the Ravens-Steelers instead, check in here throughout today’s game for regular updates and random comments.

State goes to Tallahassee after a disheartening collapse in Chestnut Hill Tuesday Night, losing 75-66 after being tied at 60 with under four minutes remaining, spurred by Lowe’s *questionable* benching of Ryan Harrow in favor of Javi Gonzalez during crunch time. Meanwhile, Florida State will try to avoid the always-dreaded letdown game after defeating #1 Duke 66-61 on Wednesday Night at the Tucker Center.

Mike Hogewood and Cory Alexander announcing. The last time I saw Cory Alexander, he was helping lead Virginia to the Elite Eight in 1995.

Starters:
State – Leslie, Wood, Smith, Brown, Harrow
Florida State – James, Singleton, Shannon, Snaer, Kitchen

Just so we’re clear: Lowe pulled Harrow for his defensive lapse in a critical situation the other night, but since then he’s suddenly earned a starting role? I’m confused, other than not scoring, has Javi done something to no longer start? Am I the only one struggling with that “logic?”

1st Half
15:20 – Florida State 6-4. Nothing much to say so far, both teams have combined for 5-of-15 shooting to this point.

Wednesday Night’s raucus crowd didn’t show up today.

13:53 – Javi checks in, coming off the bench for the first time this season. Read that last part again. Yes, it’s true. My buddy just texted me that Gary Hahn said it was because Javi was late for practice.

11:56 – Florida State 12-6. True to form, the Pack start slow, shooting only 3-of-16 (19%). However, we’re dominating the offensive glass. Baby steps.

9:54 – Tied at 12. Ugly game so far, but State closes the gap after a four-point play by Wood and then a miraculous 20-footer by Javi, who with that shot is already at 40% of his per game average of five.

6:53 – Florida State 16-14. Too many turnovers for the Pack (8) and too few for the Noles (4). State shooting only 6-of-20 (30%).

3:53 – Florida State 22-16. State being absolutely dominated in the paint, 18-4. Noles on a 6-0 run after State tied it at 16 out of the under eight timeout.

Cory Alexander talks about his love for Bojangle’s, which has been the most interesting comment he’s made all day. It amazes me that there are like 47 states with folks that have no clue what they’re missing out on.

I can’t tell the difference between Bunny from “The Wire” and Leonard Hamilton.

Half – Florida State 28-19. Well, this looks like it may get out of hand. After being tied at 16, FSU went on a 12-3 run over the final 6:17 of the half, during which State shot 1-of-8 and I lost track of the points in the paint differential, but it’s something like 22-4.

Florida State’s scoring was spread fairly even among its starters, with Shannon leading all scorers with eight. Javi is State’s leading scorer with five, which puts him on pace for a relatively monster game. State had 10 turnovers to the Noles’ six; State shot 27% against FSU’s 41%.

2nd Half
I’m sure most of the dozen or so State fans watching the first half still haven’t flipped back over from Ravens-Steelers. And really, who could blame them?

15:15 – Florida State 44-28. Singleton hit FSU’s first three at 17:58, on an inbounds pass where he was not guarded. FSU is 6-of-6 so far in the half. Alexander wants us to believe Lowe told the team to get the ball to Tracy; now that’s the most innovative coaching since Dennis Hopper’s swinging gate, trying to get the ball to your leading scorer.

11:59 – Florida State 53-36. FSU has its largest lead of the game. Our defense has held the Noles to 100% FG in the half (8-of-8).

NC State: The cure for the common hangover.

We’re playing so bad it crashed my personal laptop, so I had to switch over to my work laptop. No way is that a coincidence.

10:47 – FSU misses its first field goal of the half (8-of-9).

The full court press, as usual, creates easy baskets for our opponent.

For the few of you actually still reading this, you may want to stop by the SFN Forums to discuss a topic that gets more relevant with the passing of each game.

7:58 – Florida State 61-46. It’s officially out of hand. Bunny Colvin calls a timeout after Wood hit an uncontested three, clearly upset that we cut it to 15 when it should really be closer to 20.

3:23 – Florida State 77-57. Laughable. The 20-point lead is FSU’s highest margin in an ACC game since it led Carolina by 23 last January.

Final – Florida State 84-71

Quick Summary: State never led, it wasn’t nearly as close as the 13-point margin indicates, and it was simply a microcosm of Lowe’s tenure (ESPN.com Box Score).

Duke is next.

If you had the stomach to get this far, then head on over to the SFN Forums to peruse a variety of topics having nothing to do with State basketball.

Quit calling NC State a top-3 ACC program.

    WE’RE NOT !!! AND WE HAVEN’T BEEN FOR 20 YEARS !

There are no great coaches lining up in the wings because our program is just as irrelevant to NCAA Men’s Basketball as Duke’s football program is to the BCS discussion. The only coaches that remember NCSU as a vital and relevant part of NCAA Basketball are nearing retirement.

I have loved ACC Basketball my entire life, but now I’ve lost all passion for it – I’m just a casual spectator, and I hate Lee Fowler with every fiber of my being for that. He killed ACC Basketball for me. Just Killed It !

Thanks, Sidney, for agreeing to take a job that no one else in the country wanted. You have tried and have given your best, but you are not capable of coaching a successful team. You obviously have no offensive structure, no defensive structure, and don’t encourage or demand hustle in practice because it’s totally absent during games. I loved watching you as a player, but you have been a total failure at transferring your qualities to any of the players you have coached.

Please resign today. And take your entire staff with you. If any of them could coach, they would’ve by now.

I am absolutely done with this crap….can’t stand to watch it anymore……Les Robinson…Herb sendek and now this miserable failed experiment wirh Sidney….I have given him my full support, backing and loyalty to THIS point…..I am done….Please clean house because obviously Harris, Towe and Strickland can’t coach either……Thais is very sad to me …What will ahppen with CJL, Lorenzo Brown, Ryan Harrow…Uchebo commitment for next year…Hate to start over ….if we could keep them all in the fold and bring in a REAL basketball coach…I think that person could turn this around immediately….until then, Sidney…if you really love this University…just sit on your hands, swallow that whistle and let the guys play however they want and substitute as thjey see fit….I gurantee better results than what I am currently watching………My 51 year old heart can’t take any more of the TRAIN WRECK that has become our basketball program……Debbie, PLEASE help !!!! Funny side note:My next door neighbor is a DOOKIE(never went there mind you ,just adopted Duke basketball as his team )…He said his has gtreat fear and anxiety about this Wednesday night game at the RBC….I almost laughed ,trying to ease his fears !!!!( and yes I was there and do remember last year when we beat Duke at home) This year I see no fire, heart , courage or fight in this team…not even any energy or focus …..Sad…sickening to me

Wed night I expect a pancaking by DOOK. I have the Aunt Jemima already to go. All I need are the pancakes and they should be ready about 10 mins into the first half.

After the game is over Wed I should have enough shellack to recoat my furniture and patio deck. I have bought all the brushes.

    @Prowling Woofie:
I feel your pain…I used to love college basketball until I collided w/ NCSU basketball of the late-90’s through today.

‘Top-3’ is historically numbers-based, so I certainly hear what you’re saying about our present state. However, wouldn’t you agree that we don’t have nearly the basketball handicaps that Duke has in football? Also, don’t underestimate coaching bravado – there are always many successful mid-major coaches itching for a chance at the big-time, and a respectable number of those do carry their success over. And that’s our floor, not our ceiling. Yow is as good a hiring manager as we could hope for in this situation. Take heart!

I love Sid, but before the FSU game I had it in my head that this was a final-straw game (maybe the 2nd or 3rd). And it was awful. Sid has shown that some serious talent can be brought to State, but he’s also had a GREAT chance to showcase his ability to coach a team and simply hasn’t gotten it done. It’s almost as if talented players expose his inability to produce wins. I was hopeful, but now my hope is that Yow can do her job well. Last time around I was disappointed by Fowler’s stupid focus on big splash coaches, no mid-major up and comers, i.e. Marshall, McKillop, Lutz, etc. I’ll always be thankful Sendek is gone and that neither Barnes, Calipari, Beilein nor Lavin took the job (can’t stand any of them), but it’s time to turn the page. I hope Sid can pull some magic and meld a team with ANY sort of apparent scheme or flow, but I can’t see it happening. I’m glad Sid got a shot, but oh well. Now I’m just glad Yow will be on the case instead of Sargent Schultz.

I would agree with this statement (with the exception of Barnes). I am glad we did not get the other 2 grease balls and boring Beilein. A very successful mid major coach with a big pair and a good “personality match to the school” would be a great idea. No dinosaurs either.

This is still a good job to have regardless of what the media thinks. A lot of advantages to playing in the ACC with a big money school. The only bad situation would be if Ol Roy continues to stink it up (and he has really stunk the last 2 years) and someone decideds a change is needed. We would be second fiddle to that coaching search.

I have been an ardent Sid supporter and even defended him against the critics. I must now say that it is time for a change! The thing that gets me is the lack of adjustments between games as well as the lack of in-game adjustments. It just seems that this coaching staff has no clue what to do. At FSU the “offense” appeared to be however brought the ball down court drive and throw up a prayer. No flow. No screens. No adjustments to what FSU was doing defensively. Granted they are an exceptional defensive team, but we should have an advantage over most any team with our collection of inside/outside talent. This is not the players- this is coaching. We need a change immediately! I am just tired of the same old same old. You know what they say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result! Right now NCSU b’ball is insane!

I mentioned before Christmas that it seems that Lowe can’t seem to get out of his NBA suit. Instead of taking charge like a coach has to do in college ball he seems to be waiting for one of the players on the floor to decide what to do ala the NBA.

A little grapevine trickle and a gut feeling is that State will not have to dismiss Lowe. Sidney Lowe will resign on his own because he realizes he doesn’t like the college coaching demands and prefers the
NBA scenario. It likely won’t be a forced resignation but one that Lowe
    does on his own.

Just keep that in mind folks.
