State (11-5, 1-1) @ Florida State (12-5, 2-1)
TV: 4pm ACC Network (FOX50 in the Triangle)

For those of you that can’t watch or will be watching the Ravens-Steelers instead, check in here throughout today’s game for regular updates and random comments.

State goes to Tallahassee after a disheartening collapse in Chestnut Hill Tuesday Night, losing 75-66 after being tied at 60 with under four minutes remaining, spurred by Lowe’s *questionable* benching of Ryan Harrow in favor of Javi Gonzalez during crunch time. Meanwhile, Florida State will try to avoid the always-dreaded letdown game after defeating #1 Duke 66-61 on Wednesday Night at the Tucker Center.

Mike Hogewood and Cory Alexander announcing. The last time I saw Cory Alexander, he was helping lead Virginia to the Elite Eight in 1995.

Starters:
State – Leslie, Wood, Smith, Brown, Harrow
Florida State – James, Singleton, Shannon, Snaer, Kitchen

Just so we’re clear: Lowe pulled Harrow for his defensive lapse in a critical situation the other night, but since then he’s suddenly earned a starting role? I’m confused, other than not scoring, has Javi done something to no longer start? Am I the only one struggling with that “logic?”

1st Half
15:20 – Florida State 6-4. Nothing much to say so far, both teams have combined for 5-of-15 shooting to this point.

Wednesday Night’s raucus crowd didn’t show up today.

13:53 – Javi checks in, coming off the bench for the first time this season. Read that last part again. Yes, it’s true. My buddy just texted me that Gary Hahn said it was because Javi was late for practice.

11:56 – Florida State 12-6. True to form, the Pack start slow, shooting only 3-of-16 (19%). However, we’re dominating the offensive glass. Baby steps.

9:54 – Tied at 12. Ugly game so far, but State closes the gap after a four-point play by Wood and then a miraculous 20-footer by Javi, who with that shot is already at 40% of his per game average of five.

6:53 – Florida State 16-14. Too many turnovers for the Pack (8) and too few for the Noles (4). State shooting only 6-of-20 (30%).

3:53 – Florida State 22-16. State being absolutely dominated in the paint, 18-4. Noles on a 6-0 run after State tied it at 16 out of the under eight timeout.

Cory Alexander talks about his love for Bojangle’s, which has been the most interesting comment he’s made all day. It amazes me that there are like 47 states with folks that have no clue what they’re missing out on.

I can’t tell the difference between Bunny from “The Wire” and Leonard Hamilton.

Half – Florida State 28-19. Well, this looks like it may get out of hand. After being tied at 16, FSU went on a 12-3 run over the final 6:17 of the half, during which State shot 1-of-8 and I lost track of the points in the paint differential, but it’s something like 22-4.

Florida State’s scoring was spread fairly even among its starters, with Shannon leading all scorers with eight. Javi is State’s leading scorer with five, which puts him on pace for a relatively monster game. State had 10 turnovers to the Noles’ six; State shot 27% against FSU’s 41%.

2nd Half
I’m sure most of the dozen or so State fans watching the first half still haven’t flipped back over from Ravens-Steelers. And really, who could blame them?

15:15 – Florida State 44-28. Singleton hit FSU’s first three at 17:58, on an inbounds pass where he was not guarded. FSU is 6-of-6 so far in the half. Alexander wants us to believe Lowe told the team to get the ball to Tracy; now that’s the most innovative coaching since Dennis Hopper’s swinging gate, trying to get the ball to your leading scorer.

11:59 – Florida State 53-36. FSU has its largest lead of the game. Our defense has held the Noles to 100% FG in the half (8-of-8).

NC State: The cure for the common hangover.

We’re playing so bad it crashed my personal laptop, so I had to switch over to my work laptop. No way is that a coincidence.

10:47 – FSU misses its first field goal of the half (8-of-9).

The full court press, as usual, creates easy baskets for our opponent.

For the few of you actually still reading this, you may want to stop by the SFN Forums to discuss a topic that gets more relevant with the passing of each game.

7:58 – Florida State 61-46. It’s officially out of hand. Bunny Colvin calls a timeout after Wood hit an uncontested three, clearly upset that we cut it to 15 when it should really be closer to 20.

3:23 – Florida State 77-57. Laughable. The 20-point lead is FSU’s highest margin in an ACC game since it led Carolina by 23 last January.

Final – Florida State 84-71

Quick Summary: State never led, it wasn’t nearly as close as the 13-point margin indicates, and it was simply a microcosm of Lowe’s tenure (ESPN.com Box Score).

Duke is next.

If you had the stomach to get this far, then head on over to the SFN Forums to peruse a variety of topics having nothing to do with State basketball.

I’m not being a smartass: what’s the feasibility of Larry Brown coming in midseason on a 2 month contract, while we recruit a real coach?

  2. turfpack 01/15/2011 at 6:30 PM #

I’M NOT HAPPY….NCSTATE SHOULD BE MAKING ME HAPPY WITH BASKETBALL….THE SAME OLDE SONG IS A SINGING…..RING,RING…EXCUSE ME COULD I SPEAK WITH DEBBIE YOW.

  3. lsutton5144 01/15/2011 at 6:32 PM #

Yow is in Fla at the game – they talked with her on the radio before the game. Maybe she’ll leave Sid there.
Javi did not start because he was late for practice one day this week.

  4. JeremyH 01/15/2011 at 6:38 PM #

I’ll take Jackson Browne at this point.

  5. JeremyH 01/15/2011 at 6:39 PM #

Did Yow say anything about our basketball program on the radio?

  6. mak4dpak 01/15/2011 at 6:39 PM #

Such a waste of good talent. Maybe some day soon, they will finally have a coach that knows how to be a coach. Make Sid and his assistants thumb their way back to NC. Or they could just stay in Florida. What excuses will we hear now from Sid, and his small fan club? BOOOOOOO!!!!!

  7. tvp1 01/15/2011 at 6:40 PM #

gotta say…I think Sid finally lost me with this game. Giving up 50+ points in a half to offensively-challenged FSU is just bewildering and should never ever happen.

  8. wufpup76 01/15/2011 at 6:40 PM #

If she (Yow) is impressed by anything at all in this game I’d be shocked.

  9. Tampa-Pack 01/15/2011 at 6:42 PM #

I was completely against firing Sid until the end of the season, until today. I would be just as happy to hear it announced this evening. This is insane. All this talent, and I have a feeling we will finish 10th or 11th, pretty much just like always.

  10. JeremyH 01/15/2011 at 6:43 PM #

Despite the talent influx, we are playing as bad as we have ever played under Lowe. The problem is clear: there are no players left coached under the previous regime. Dennis Horner carried our a$$ to the NIT last season.

    I Give up!

We Suck, We Suck, We Suck…

Admiting you have a problem is the first step. I admit we have a BIG problem. Let the healing begin in March during coach search madness.

    I am officially numb.

  12. mak4dpak 01/15/2011 at 6:55 PM #

84-71. That says it all. When does football season start? Fire Sid now, we can’t do any worse. It makes me want to puke every time I hear him talk about the games on television. Admit you can’t get the job done. We all know it. And maybe your fan club has lost a few more members after today.

    triad,

Just told the same to my wife. I’m oddly happy now. I now know that we will never get where I expected at the beginning of the season.

This is coming from an ardent Lowe supporter. His refusal to play Harrow 30+ minutes a game has lost me. If he can’t see that he is our only hope to win with this young team, I can’t support him. I hope he sees the light and our team turns around – I’ll still go to all the games, watch it all, but acceptance of the current reality has given me peace…

    …well, that and alcohol.

Yow’s conversation was short, but she pretty much said that she felt that we had the talent to compete in all the games she had seen. She didn’t mention the fact that we aren’t competing, but I didn’t expect her to in that forum. Too much class.

I’d like to revise and amend my remarks from after the Wake Forest game: we CANNOT (should not) go to the NCAA tournament if we CANNOT play defense.

  16. choppack1 01/15/2011 at 7:05 PM #

The funny thing about FSU’s “hot shooting” – I think most major conference teams in the country could have it done it against our defense which breaks down with consistency.

  17. whope90 01/15/2011 at 7:06 PM #

I knew it would be really tough to beat a strong basketball program like florida state, i mean with all this talent and t smith, what were we thinking. It was men against little boys, cj loosing a loose ball and r harrow being dogged by kitchen, defense what is that?? I wish our new ad would pull the plug on him now, old el sid. I mean i envy the b program at florida state, there i said it!!At lteast they have one. Hey if we need a coach how about wojo from duke?? Imagine how intense the team would be??
And who said all these kids were good??
If they are so good i hate to see bad and next up Duke???
11-7 1-3 hummm that ain’t good enough for the nit.
Well, time to piss on the fire and call off the dogs, our season is done!!
Let the coaching hunt start, but can we hire a real coach???

  18. whope90 01/15/2011 at 7:08 PM #

Hey can we move to the big south conference???
We can get to the ncaa’s taht way?

  19. GameOfInches 01/15/2011 at 7:10 PM #

I have waited for TS to return and we still can’t get it done.

I can’t think of anything positive to say about our team.

We will have players transfer, with or without a new coach.

  20. tuckerdorm1983 01/15/2011 at 7:10 PM #

rant rant rant rant rant. Let off steam and go back to ranting. A coach with no real college experience. Too bad. I like him a lot. Just can’t do what needs to be done. Clearly the tide has turned against him.

  21. EdMar 01/15/2011 at 7:16 PM #

I’m sure that FSU has had much harder practices that this game. How many open layups and easy threes can a team be GIVEN in a game?

I will try to “check-out mentally” the rest of the season and get my hopes up for next year with a new coach

The only postive is that my pick in the SFN poll of 6 wins or less this year is looking better.

  22. packalum08 01/15/2011 at 7:28 PM #

I agree with Tuckerdorm here. I appreciate Coach Lowe’s accomplishments as a player and his willingness to take the coaching job here. I appreciate the job he’s done bringing recruits and excitement. At the same time, I’m extremely frustrated by the lack of visible progress as a program. I’m sure that the players and coaches are frustrated by this. I just don’t think that Coach Lowe has the necessary skills/temperament/whatever to coach the college game in the ACC.

Thanks Isutton: Seems she understands as do most fans.

  24. mak4dpak 01/15/2011 at 7:47 PM #

At least we no longer have Fowlup to screw things up, and show his undying support for this hire, in the best coach the ACC has ever had. Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!

  25. Texpack 01/15/2011 at 8:34 PM #

4-12 ACC record. Mark it down
