BC Hoops Preview (Tues 1/11, 9PM)

As NC State’s first true challenge of their ACC schedule, I thought it would be nice to see what we’re up against in Boston College this Tuesday at 9PM (broadcasted on ESPNU).

Record:
BC is current 2-0 in the conference with wins over Maryland (79-74) and Georgia Tech (86-75).  Both of these wins are pretty solid, especially considering that Maryland’s only other ACC loss is to #1 Duke (71-64) in which they lead Duke as much as 6pt for much of the game (Duke’s largest lead was 8).  The GT win was also impressive for BC not only in that they were able to bounce back from a home loss to Harvard (78-69), but also in that they were able to win with a FT% of 72% and 3PT% of 47%.  NC State was able to match that against their albeit weaker WFU opponent (89% FT, 50% 3PT) last Saturday.

Players:
On paper, both teams’ leaders appear to match-up very well.  NC State holds a slight edge in our rebounding (Leslie 7.9 to BC’s Raji 6.9) while BC holds the advantage in assists (Brown 3.5 to BC’s Jackson 1.3).

The thing to watch out for is how Lowe matches players up against Jackson.  Jackson is a 6-3 (208lbs) guard who is definitely stockier than our guards, and from all indication, is the life of the team.  He shoots 49% from behind the arch and is averaging 18.9 points a game.  In 26 minutes of play, he scored 25 points against GT.  Jackson leads BC in points scored, blocks, and steals.  Many teams have super-stars (the stats of JJ Reddick and Duke come to mind), so before you can label a team a one-trick pony, you have to evaluate whether the statistical leader is simply the best of a cadre of amazingly talented players or if their star is the only thing shining the their night’s sky.  Unfortunately for BC, the later seems to be the case here.

At forward, their star players are Corey Raji (6-6, 218lbs) and Joe Trapani (6-8, 232lbs).  Together, they average for 26.4 points compared to Smith and Leslie’s 24.5 points.  NC State does have a defensive advantage over BC.  BC’s top three defensive players (Jackson, Raji, and Southern) average for 0.633BPG while as NC State’s top three defensive players (Paint, Leslie, and Vandenburg) average 1.200 BPG.

Offense vs Defense:
Boston College holds an edge over NC State offensively in FT, FG, and 3PT% (0.464, 0.709, 0.342 respectively to BC’s 0.489, 0.731, 0.408).  As previously mentioned, NC State’s defensive leaders are solidly better than BC’s defensive leaders.  Furthermore, NC State has 4 players with BPG of 0.8 or better and 3 other players averaging 0.4 BPG while BC only has 4 notable defensive players (the three mentioned above averaging 0.633 BPG and Cortney Dunn at 0.4 BPG).

In addition to blocking, NC State also out-rebounds BC 39-32 on average with relatively equal PPG (76-74 BC).  This is likely due to NC State’s greater reliance on power under the hoop as compared to BC’s guard-centric scoring scheme.  NC State also leads BC in steals average 7 SPG to BC’s 5.  Given NC State’s youth and sometimes shotty execution, this could be a break for NC State.

Conclusion:
BC paints a picture of a team with an extraordinary guard with the help of a couple solid forwards.  The problem with Boston College is that their defensive presence is lacking to say the least.  Luckily, NC State has managed to do well when guard Brown is allowed to cut into the paint or big-men Leslie, Smith, Howell, and Painter are allowed to “And-1” some baskets under traffic.  BC’s weak defense plays right into our most talented senior’s strong suits.  Tracy Smith should have a good night.

The lack of rebounding by Boston College isn’t too significant, but note that while NC State holds an advantage over BC in rebounding, the average PPG are roughly the same.  You can interpret this as NC State not making enough of our own shots (probably true) or as Boston College not making efficient use of their rebounds.  NC State has shown great ability to make use of rebounds throughout the season, especially with threats like ZoBo.

Who will win? There is no reason why NC State can’t come away from this game with a solid, reputable ‘W’ against a respectable ACC team.  This game is a good follow-up to the smashing of WFU last Saturday and allows NC State to play a team that is very talented (and dangerous if we aren’t careful), but has weaknesses that play up to NC State’s strengths.  If NC State can contain BC guard Jackson and shut him down at the three, while establishing a presence under the rim, it may be a RED Tuesday night in Boston.

(Editorial: I am cautiously optimistic about this game, but NC State having the history it does, we should brace ourselves to see BC play like a top 5 team and have a record-setting night.  NC State is in an amazingly fragile situation and every game should be treated with a quiet sureness about our gameplan and a humble confidence in what we can do when we focus.  NC State CAN be great this season and I look forward to seeing if NC State can establish itself early in it’s ACC schedule.)

    Fantastic write-up!

The signature of Sid’s tenure at State has been incredible guard play – on the other team. How many record breaking performances have we seen by opposing guards? Our ‘ole’ defense kills me every time one of these guys realizes he can drive on us. We seem to just watch the show while these guys stick daggers in us.

So Jackson scares me. We need to see Sid get this bugaboo off his back. Figure out how to stop this guy, or at least limit him. If he goes off for 30, we’re in deep water.

^ 🙂 ! spot on. we still have some trouble, i attended the elon game last week and their guard gave javi fits, enough that he took a seat for a considerable time in the 2nd half. we still emerged victoriuos despite that. the georgetown guards took over late in that game as well so i don’t know if we are past that or not? tuesday can’t get here soon enough!

“we should brace ourselves to see BC play like a top 5 team and have a record-setting night.”

The probably isn’t our opponents, it’s us (us being the NC State basketball team.)

I suspect BC will have plenty of good open looks. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if we defend them well.

History has shown that this is the exacty kind of game that has kept us off the NCAA bubble. We’re playing a very beatable team on the road. These are games an NCAA tourney team has to have.

This is a bellweather game. If we lay a turd, we know it’s the same old ****… if we win, maybe this is the year things are different.

    A 2-0 start would do wonders…

BC’s offense relies on getting good looks from 3. I’m sure they’ll have a few, but we have to do our best to contain their attack.

Whoever has the rebounding and turnover advantage will win. No reason we should not achieve this and beat BC on paper, but I’d give us 50/50. Still too early to tell how Tracy’s presence impacts this team.

I think we may have learned how to defend the 3 based on our second half performance against Elon. With TS underneath, there is less reason to leave your man to help on the dribble penetration. If we can stay out of foul trouble, the game will be ours.

Also, I think CJL is on the verge of a major breakthrough. He will make us proud!

PoppaJohn is spot on, we’re poor defensively at the guard position (rewatch the WF game if you’re uncertain). I say get CJ Williams on Reggie or the other guard they have.

In fact, why not start CJ Williams? It is so important to set the tone early and clearly the team needs upperclassman leadership on the floor, away games especially. Overall they just need to stay aggressive.

cjw has played very well coming off the bench this year, i don’t think we should mess with that. i seriously doubt we reach foul trouble against this team if they are so weak on the inside. i would venture to say the opposite. rotating leslie, painter, howell and maybe even some vandenburg for some low post physical play, ntm tracy, should have them much closer to foul trouble than we are. .. and if that is the case then we should dominate them.

Key early ACC game, loose this one and the possibility of a NCAA appearance goes way down, win it and hope stays alive.

I agree guard play will be very important; I would love to see another all out 40 min effort.

For what is worth, BC has a 40 RPI and the betting line has them favored by 6.5 point

I like the idea of starting CJW, I think he’s earned it. Scott can come off the bench and stroke the 3 pointer. I think Sid should reward an exceptional all round game with the privilege of starting.

  12. packbackr04 01/11/2011 at 11:31 AM #

CJW has been lights out coming off the bench the past few games. he is a spark. leave him on the bench to start.

  13. 61Packer 01/11/2011 at 2:25 PM #

I like the idea of starting anyone as long as it’s not #10.

  14. Wolfy__79 01/11/2011 at 2:26 PM #

i for one am looking forward to a normal discussion where we are wondering how our team will handle going from raleigh and traveling geographically from the top of the acc to nearly the bottom facing two respectable opponents instead of having to overly criticize the head coach.. good things to come with winning i suppose 🙂

scott wood has been our hardest worker throughout the season… all while struggling a little bit here lately. he should start but maybe have equal time with cj williams. he’s got the highest bball iq on the floor with only one possible exception being tracy.

  15. Wolfy__79 01/11/2011 at 2:30 PM #

^^ like it or not #10 is crucial to our success. ryan harrow simply cannot do it on his own… as much as it pains me to say!

  16. Wolfy__79 01/11/2011 at 2:31 PM #

however harrow is showing alot of progress to me as far as not forcing the ball.. but still very green in maturity. i guess the same can be said for javi!

” The question I posted on Twitter was “Is this a sign of things to come, or a flash in the pan?””

Sounds like the Duke game last year. History says it is a blip. I hope I am wrong.

“Whether we played Wake or not, our FTs were on 90% of the time and we were hitting it from behind the arch at just under 50% of the time.”

The thing is, those shots are easier to make against bad teams. When a team is in your face and the pressure is on those shot percentages will go down. There is a reason Wake sucks. Because they do not play good defense (last in ACC in FG % and scoring defense. If we start doing this against good teams then I will be impressed.

BTW Pride I am not purposely picking on you. It was just that your posts caught me eye.

  19. Packfan28 01/11/2011 at 3:13 PM #

I honestly don’t think its a flash in the pan. The returning guys obviously have more experience, especially the ones who were freshmen last year like Wood and Howell. Add to that a dramatic uptick in talent, I’m a lot more confident Wake wasn’t a one time occurrence. Also, CJ Leslie is showing huge improvement every game. He is fast becoming who we thought he would be. I don’t think its any fluke that has coincided with Tracy’s return.

  20. PoppaJohn 01/11/2011 at 4:16 PM #

^ I sure hope you are right. I am dying for 9:00 to get here to find out. This is a good team we are playing on the road, a win makes us look much better in everyone’s eyes.

Sid’s teams are normally slow to mature, I’m afraid it’s too early in the season for a meaningful win. I really hope I am wrong.

  21. Wolfy__79 01/11/2011 at 5:57 PM #

^^, i recall last year one of the players and i believe it was Javi saying they want to be better leaders/role models for the younger players.. or something to that effect!!

  22. Wolfy__79 01/11/2011 at 6:03 PM #

in relation to herb’s players not really having the team attitude…

  23. choppack1 01/11/2011 at 9:39 PM #

Regarding Trapani – he should be very easy to guard – don’t leave him alone – period. If your analysis means, leave Trapani for wide open 3’s – we WILL lose.

However, if you say to a player, look – it doesn’t take much on this guy – just don’t let him get wide open 3’s – you should be fine.

Don’t fall into the “trap” – this kind of like leaving Wood open last year. Trapani can shoot, he’s either not getting good shots or he’s just been cold so far – he can catch fire at any moment.
