Happy New Year! After a Surprisingly Good Wolfpack 2010

Well, we only have about 5 hours left in 2010, at least in NC State’s (and my) home time zone. This isn’t going to be a long “recap” post, but I do think we should spend a few moments reflecting on the first steps we took towards ending our 2+ decades of wandering in the sports desert.

This spring, Randy Woodson became Chancellor. Although I had some initial skepticism (lifelong Wolfpack fandom will do that), I warmed rapidly to the idea. The more I heard from “behind the scenes,” the more satisfied I became. And he finally helped orchestrate the end of an era that has lasted far too long.

Yes, our bumbling, loud-mouthed, ignorant, incompetent, brand-damaging Athletic Director was finally pushed out. Despite the typical lamentations of certain lazy media members and associates at rival schools (who enjoyed looking great by comparison), the market spoke. Fowler couldn’t find ANY work as an AD, even at a rung or two lower on the food chain. Trust the market – as it turns out the supply of unsuitable dunces is high, while demand for their services is low.

After a refreshingly quiet, leak-resistant search, NC State hired Debbie Yow away from Maryland. This time, I was even more skeptical at first, worrying that the “old boy” network wanted someone with “family” ties. But nothing could have been farther from the truth. Woodson liked her tough as nails, “no excuses” management style – and that she shared his goals (important note – not “hopes” or “wishes”) of elevating NC State to greatness. Every piece of private and public feedback I received was positive. 100 percent. Then, I received word that Dr. Yow put Tom O’Brien and Sidney Lowe on the clock this summer. For success instead of nebulous “improvement.” That made me almost giddy with excitement.

And in 2010, Tom O’Brien decided he wasn’t ready to get off the pot – so he shat out a 9-4 season, complete with a winning ACC record, a 4th straight win over our pals from Cheater Hill, and a sound thumping of a ranked West Virginia squad that felt it deserved a higher caliber bowl opponent. LMAO. I also never heard one word regarding TOB grumbling about the pressure, or pre-emptive excuse making. I’m looking forward to 2011 and 2012, with cautious optimism of at least one Atlantic Division title – and perhaps even our first conference crown since I was 6 years old.

Somewhat overshadowed by the football program’s rare November relevance – but nonetheless extremely important – Debbie Yow also put men’s soccer “coach” (or piece of lawn furniture, depending on your perspective) George Tarantini out to pasture. Although this move should have happened at least ten years ago – hey, better late than never. And it would have been “never” under Fowler’s “leadership.” That’s one laughingstock program that can’t help but improve, with a more driven and successful new coach. Who knows, perhaps Coach Findley is chummy with Brad Stevens from their days at Butler…

That brings me to men’s basketball, which has sucked (or been mediocre) for many, many years – and remains sucky. But 2010 was good for hoops, as well. Because we now have an AD who isn’t afraid to make personnel moves, and put her own stamp on our second most important sports program (football does and will always pay the bills). Plus, Lowe has shown enough that I am 99.999999% confident that Yow is already working out a search plan. Fowler would have given at least two loud, unequivocal votes of confidence by now.

Don’t be complacent – this is just the start of NC State athletics’ journey back to relevance (and then hopefully, greatness). But 2010 at least laid a solid foundation. Let’s hope 2011 brings considerable more progress toward Woodson’s and Yow’s goals.

Happy New Year to each and every loyal SFN reader and commenter! Yes, even the lurking Holes…

“Trust the market – as it turns out the supply of unsuitable dunces is high, while demand for their services is low.”

    This is gold.

Happy New Year, fellow pack fans. Be safe!

This indeed has been the best year for Wolfpack athletics in decades.

Here’s hoping that 2011 keeps the trend going.

Many wishes to all for a Happy New Year. Don’t forget the pork, greens, and black-eyed peas tomorrow.

Got my ham, collards, black-eyed peas, and corn bread at the store tonight!

Could not have said it better BJD. Here’s to an even more promising 2011 for the Pack!

Starting the year off by running a marathon in the morning before I get to the ham and black eyed peas.

The leadership was put in place in 2010 to turn around the athletic department. Now it’s time to watch and enjoy the results.

    Happy New Year!

Good recap, and it feels good to look forward to the future with some confidence. Confidence that we have good people in place who have plans and goals and will work to accomplish their vision.

If we can all just make it through the basketball season then maybe the future is bright for a change.

“Fowler would have given at least two loud, unequivocal votes of confidence by now.”

^Truer words have never been spoken.

Happy new year everyone and please stay safe … Go Pack!

Happy New Year! I think 2011 will be a get it done or get out year again. I like the way TOB stepped up and met the challenge. Hopefully the program will continue to grow. Eat some ham and black eyed peas later today. Be safe and Go Pack!

    Happy New Year!

In general I think the “state of State” is much better than 1/1/2010.

New Chancellor, new and effective AD, better football, signs of a better future for men’s and women’s basketball.

Challenges remain of course but now I feel these challenges are recognized by those in power.

    Go Pack!

Great recap. For the first time in a long time, I again have a feeling of hope, not blind hope, but real hope that if things aren’t improving, changes will be made. Happy New Years Pack!!

Good recap on the year. We have truely been blessed with the change of leadership you mention. For the UNC CHeat lurkers, notice the author didn’t even have to count the on-going NCAA Investigation at the “Flagship” School in his list of things we are greatful for. We are on our way up and can feel good about our program once again. Our so called obsession with your school falls mostly into two categories: 1)wanting to see a fair enforcement of the rules, 2) entertainment at your expense. While I’m envious of the success of your programs, I’m glad we are doing things the Wolfpack way. Go Pack and Happy New Year’s to all.

    Happy New Year Wolfpack nation!
It has been a better year than we’ve had in a while, hopefully the first of many. Basketball is my sport – so until that is right, I’m not happy with the ‘state of State.’ Maybe by this report next year the basketball program will be on the upswing.

“Yes, our bumbling, loud-mouthed, ignorant, incompetent, brand-damaging Athletic Director was finally pushed out.”

Pretty good article but people continue to give our ex-AD way too much credit. He was much much worse than this.

Good things started to happen when we got rid of obliger

    Great recap!

    Yow = Mary Ann Fox.

We finally are making progress in athletics with a competent AD.

Things are looking good for TOB and I believe that Yow will not hesitate to get rid of Lowe if we continue to be mediocre.

Stephens at Butler and Miller at Zona would be at the top of my list.

    Happy New Year!
