BREAKING: Art Chansky out at UNC, 10/6 Chansky email to Thorp about search for Davis replacement

Late this afternoon the word came down that Art Chansky, who is a big wheel at Tar Heel Sports properties, was out, apparently unexpectedly.

Also, around the same time, WTVD made available this email, which is amazing.  Basically Chansky is critical of Davis in a vague way and is suggesting some guys to conduct a coaching search to replace Davis.  You have to read the whole thing.

I will let others speculate about whether these items are related.

The best place to follow this is on Mark Armstrong’s Twitter feed.

In the news article on WTVD, the head of Tar Heel Sports Properties and Chansky don’t seem to necessarily agree on what happened.

Well-known and longtime Tar Heel Sports Properties employee Art Chansky was fired Wednesday after 18 years as Associate General Manager and Account Executive for the company.

Chansky confirmed the news to Eyewitness News over the phone, but had no further comment.

The firing comes after an email surfaced in a recent release of documents

Compare that understanding to this one, also in the same article:

Gary Sobba, the head of Tar Heel Sports Properties insists Chansky resigned and said Chansky has been “a tremendous resource” and wished him the best.

In the WRAL article about Chansky, they quote a source saying:

people within the company were “surprised” that Chansky was leaving.

For those of us who aren’t in the know about Tar Heel big wigs, Chansky has written several books about North Carolina, along with the UNC-Duke rivalry. He is as much of a well-known name when it comes to Tar Heel fans as Woody Durham and Mick Mixon (pre-Panthers days).

Wow. That email is incredible. That last bit about knowing reputations of coaches, even if “never linked to an NCAA violation” is quite telling of what people knew on the inside.

Guess it’s not just between Art and Holden anymore. Sorry, Art.

  2. phillypacker 12/15/2010 at 5:56 PM #

    Wow, ouch. Knife meet back.

  3. PackisRolling 12/15/2010 at 6:03 PM #

wow. surely shows Holden is all-in on Butch. Hope Roy didn’t suggest kicking Butch to the curb or else he’s next.

  4. highstick 12/15/2010 at 6:17 PM #

How did they get that email??? Particularly that fast??

  5. packof81 12/15/2010 at 6:20 PM #

Maybe the other shoe is fixin’ to drop.

Thorp had nothing to gain…and a lot to lose…by releasing this email to the public. My guess is Chansky forwarded a copy of his email to WTVD on a confidential basis with the instructions to make it public if Chansky ended up being fired.

I guess the email is no longer confidential! All I can say is wow, just wow.

A guy from within the U offers help, and since not on the same page, ends up looking for work. We are the ones who wear red, but I would say Comrade did not follow orders.

Hmmm, where have I seen that photo before?

  9. wufpup76 12/15/2010 at 6:26 PM #

    That e-mail is priceless.

Too bad for Eddie Fogler’s “secret” one-man coaching search firm. Plus, Jim Delaney in the news again … shocker.

Art Chansky, welcome to the underside of the bus. Thorp is indeed all-in on Chief & Co.

  10. highstick 12/15/2010 at 6:28 PM #

So Tar Heel Sports is basically part of Learfileld? Interesting…I didn’t know that. I’d bet Fogler didn’t appreciate that email going public at all, particularly the connection to the hiring of Horn. While his hire has been good for South Carolina, it makes you wonder if Chansky doesn’t have some inside scoop coming out of Columbia. Maybe the saga and trail of evidence from Weslye Saunders continues to haunt Marvin and Butch..

And it’s really coincidental that the NCAA appeal was delayed today? Maybe to reassess based on some leaks??

“We are the ones who wear red, but I would say Comrade did not follow orders.”

^So, is Unx more akin to North Korea, Cuba, China, or old Soviet Russia? 🙂

I think it is a very apt comparison.

  12. highstick 12/15/2010 at 6:38 PM #

Well, Fogler’s search connections obviously aren’t so private anyway. I just finished doing a little research and his name was publicly acknowledged in the signing of Crean. But, Chansky was a friend of Hugh Morton’s too who wielded a good bit of influence in Chapel Hill.

I guess we know which side of the divide Holden Thorp is on. The guys at the top are going to look like fools for loving on Butch so much when this is all over with. They may have an escape plan, but I can’t imagine how then could reverse field on retaining Butch with a straight face given everything that has been made public.

I have to think the comments about the BOT had something to do with this. That will cost someone their job but having violations left and right under your watch is fine… Unbelievable.

  15. Clarksa 12/15/2010 at 7:32 PM #

I’ll bet Chansky retired to “spend more time with the family” and will be taking a 6 month cruise around the world.

  16. fullmoon1 12/15/2010 at 7:57 PM #

They sure are strange. For a “liberal arts” school you would think “diversity” adn “freedom” of speech are valued over there yet they squash anyone who dare not toes the company line. The more that comes out on this story the less surprised I am.

  17. ruffles31 12/15/2010 at 8:49 PM #

I read somewhere that UNC is Learfield’s biggest client by far. They pay UNC something obscene. It is WAY more than State gets in their radio deal. I don’t have the numbers, but it made me think that they get in one year what probably half the ACC gets combined. It is that crazy of a number.

  18. BJD95 12/15/2010 at 9:59 PM #

In Soviet Russia, Butch support YOU!!

Bonus points to anyone who catches my reference.

  19. Master 12/15/2010 at 10:31 PM #

I would like to suggest that some pretty smart folks agree that Butch will eventually get canned at some point in this process, wether he deserves it or not, just because it happened on his watch. That being a probable result, as the email implies, a search for a coach will ensue and the players could be lined up in advance to do the ground work.

I believe that these same folks who see the writing on the wall may want the search to happen NOW rather than well after the season ends and the candidates are all taken. The window of opportunity for that is about another 3 weeks. If Butch is not gone by the first week of January, he will be the head coach in 2011.

Yakov Smirnov, is that you?!? 🙂

  21. Dogbreath 12/15/2010 at 10:53 PM #

Holy shit. This would be like State College firing Frank Weedon.

  22. BJD95 12/15/2010 at 10:55 PM #

    95 is right!!

  23. Old MacDonald 12/15/2010 at 11:19 PM #

I have no inside info whatsoever, but it sure looks like serious shit is hitting the fan over there.

  24. Dogbreath 12/15/2010 at 11:34 PM #

Loller at the 1/2 price special above the #9 jerseys.
