Wide Right in Tallahassee

Ok, I’m calmer now (somewhat, anyway).

And, thanks to The U and The Flagship (I swear, today was the first time I’ve ever in my life cheered for an opponent of Carolina’s to lose, and although I didn’t cheer for Carolina to win, it still felt dirty), Saturday in the Atlantic ends where it began: with State and Maryland each in control of its own destiny and Florida State needing some help.

State can still make it to Charlotte. That’s great, I’ll be there wearing bells and whistles cheering them on. But regardless of how the rest of November plays out, TOB — or as BJD referred to him, TGW (aka, The Gutless Wonder) — made the absolute wrong call with the game (and probably the Atlantic Division) on the line today. For those that missed it, trailing 14-13 with under four minutes to play, State faced a 4th-and-one at the Clemson 43, and instead of making what most of us agree wasn’t just the right call for that situation, but the ONLY call (including, it appeared, Wilson and most of his teammates), TOB opted to punt…for four net yards.

Sure, State was plenty awful today before that call — poor execution and far too many missed opportunities to put Clemson away — and there was plenty of blame to share for that loss, not to mention we got the ball back with another chance to win it and failed to convert. So, TOB’s inexcusable, braindead decision wasn’t the sole reason we lost. But his decision put us in a position where winning the game would be highly unlikely.

With the division on the line and the ACC’s best quarterback needing a single yard, TOB chose to punt rather than play for the win. Make no mistake, punting was the low-percentage gamble there, not going for it. Best case scenario: we back Clemson up inside their own 10, force a three-and-out while burning all three of our timeouts, and then get the ball back around midfield with no timeouts and an unreliable kicking game. It’s not even a situation where you can claim confidence in your defense forcing a punt and trading up for better field position. Nope, the most likely best case scenario is that we trade two valuable minutes and three timeouts for a net loss of 10-15 yards in field position. Right?

I feel safe saying that most of us would’ve been disappointed had we not made it on that fourth down, but at least we could stomach going down fighting. After all, that’s our style. We didn’t like it when Amato played not to lose and we most certainly aren’t happy when TOB does it. What’s the worst that happens, we turn it over on downs and Clemson runs out the clock and we lose the game? So what? We’ve done plenty of that in the past few years. At least give us a chance to win it, coach.

Maybe TOB regrets that decision. And while I don’t think it makes him a bad coach (because his overall record shows otherwise), I do think it’s wholly indicative that State football has peaked under his leadership. We may still play in Charlotte on December 4th, and maybe we’ll win the ACC title and play in the Orange Bowl, or lose and go to the Peach, but that doesn’t mean TOB is the right coach to continue leading us forward, not if we have aspirations of national prominence that we were promised a decade ago when we started writing checks to pay for the renovated Carter-Finley. I trust Debbie Yow to make the right decision about this after the season.

Why? Because TOB will always punt in that same situation rather than going for the win. It’s just his style. And we’ll never be happy about it.

Accepting that call now is even tougher, knowing we blew a golden opportunity to seperate ourselves from Maryland and effectively eliminate Florida state, who both lost today. But the real bitch of it is that somehow we’re still in this fight and so now we’ll all resume that same dreadful, weary hope that hangs like a curse in our lives.

It’s tough being a State fan.

Many great comments from the SFN faithful on BJD’s earlier post here and also our Forums.

    ^And rightfully so.

I was at the game today, and even the Clemson fan beside me couldn’t believe their luck when the punt team ran unto the field and then when the punt put Clemson with the ball basically where it would have been if we had gone for it and not gotten it. TOB made the right call against FSU when we went for it instead of kicking the field goal. But, today was unforgivable. And I apologize to all of the Wolfpack Nation out there. I don’t get to many games maybe one every couple of years, but it seems like we lose more times then we win when I am there in person.

Our last five games, we are 2-3. That record does not instill confidence for our remaining 3 games.

I couldn’t root for UNC to beat FSU because regardless of the result, NC State will still find a way not to win the Atlantic.

How can anyone get excited about the second chance handed us by the Canes and Tarholes…………ECU and Clemson handed us second chances both games and we pissed them away….our season is over. There is no hope for this program so long as OBrien and his idiots are running it

  6. Tampa-Pack 11/07/2010 at 7:19 AM #

Okay, I haven’t ready EVERY post following the game, but I have read the majority of them in the multiple posts. I am still really upset we didn’t go for it in te 4th quarter – like many have said put your boots on and go get it. Trying and failing is okay, but you have to try. If we came up short, it would suck, but we tried.

Anyway, my beef right now, is that although we are still in the “driver’s seat” since everyone lost yesterday, we missed the opportunity to damn near SLAM the door shut on everyone else. That’s why its such a big deal. We had out chance and we didn’t even play. While we still might get there, we have a much tougher row to hoe by not taking the opportunity yesterday. UN-Cheat’s second team is still damn good, and we always struggle with MD. If we would have won today, against a pretty error filled Clemson team, we would have that cushion both (or either of those games). Now we need all those games and likely a little help. That’s my problem with the big picture!

  7. Tampa-Pack 11/07/2010 at 7:24 AM #

As an aside, and I hate to go here….

What happens if/when UN-Cheat’s season is vacated by the NCAA, and those wins are forfeited. Do they go back to the losing teams? See where I’m going? I guess it doesn’t matter, but what if two teams are tied with similar conference records, but one beat and the other lost to UNC (or even in one win separates them). I guess it doesn’t matter, but when those wins are vacated, it is more than likely that the wrong team went to the championship game, correct? Maybe? Just getting really curious. It never crossed my mind until they beat FSU.

It was not JUST that call.
How about the draw play on 3 and long?
What about our abandonment of aggressive defense?
These are the signs of a coach that does not have the fortitude to win at a high level. Heck TGW has not even had a winning season yet.

As for FSU losing, it just gives TGW another chance to choke. And make no mistake about it, he will choke when given the opportunity. It is what he does.

  9. TheAliasTroll 11/07/2010 at 7:56 AM #

I’m sorry, but calling the head coach of our NC State Wolfpack football team “a gutless wonder” while he’s in the midst of a 6-3 season and trying to get that moniker to stick is tacky and classless. Some of yall need to slowly take the razor away from your wrist and check back into reality.

    Just one fans opinion.

  10. BJD95 11/07/2010 at 7:57 AM #

Now, TGW gets to choke against Butch Davis.

I’m sure that will be much more palatable to the fanbase, yes?

  11. BJD95 11/07/2010 at 8:00 AM #

In the paper this morning, it was noted that Josh was hurt on the last kickoff, and wasn’t available for any potential game-winning FG late.

So, unless you are comfortable trotting out the BACKUP kicker in a “do or die” situation, we pretty clearly had to be playing for six, not three. With that in mind, TGW’s decision is even more baffling.

    AN ANALOGY

two teams on saturday find themselves down by 1 point with less than 4 mins to go and about 80 yards to go for a touch down. Both Teams have 3 time outs.

    Team A is down 34-35
    Team B is down 13-14

Team A manages to get within FG range on the 5 yd line and go up 37-35.

Team B gets within 40 yards of goal line and bogs down with a 4th and 1.

Team A plays with a mission and understands this is 4 down territory and until they are in FG range move the ball down the field.

Team B decides to PUNT and which has a net effect of 4 yards (yes thats right 4 yards)

Team A quarterback never heaves the ball down the field into double coverage in an “Up for Grabs pass”

Team B does stop the other team and get the ball back but fails to convert a 4th and 10.

Team A coach would go for it on 4th and 1 on the 40 but Team B coach does not.

Team A wins when the other team misses a 40 yd FG.
Team B loses when they fail to convert on 4th and 10

I say Team A has the better coach and Team A has the better quarterback and Team A has the better team and when Team A plays Team B in a few weeks Team A is going to kick their asses.

Remember that this is all hypothetical and being a fan of team B I don’t think I could watch Team A pick apart Team B

  13. Pack78 11/07/2010 at 9:26 AM #

Re the above hypotheticals on possible unx vacated victories affecting the ACC title game this year: my understanding is that the school that cheats and has victories vacated just has THEIR record adjusted, defeated teams cannot then count the defeats as victories and thereby readjust their records.

  14. BJD95 11/07/2010 at 9:48 AM #

That is correct. Nobody gets more wins, you just have multiple losers.

Sadly, the Holes aren’t going to have to vacate shit. Including the ass beating they put on TGW in 13 days.

  15. 66pack 11/07/2010 at 10:20 AM #

the only change i see this year is a slightly better defense but that is countered with much worst offense and as the season progesses more mistakes and some really stupid play.the staff needs to give glennon some playing time these last games for wilson will not be back next year.

  16. Statefan1998 11/07/2010 at 10:54 AM #

How are people not mad at TOB? “he is 6-3,” that sounds good because he did such a great job of diminishing expectations. That has been his style since BC. Again, people are ignoring this complete failure in recruiting. I seem to be the only one concerned, so I guess it will be fine?

  17. jrsr 11/07/2010 at 11:09 AM #

It is easy to hate the 4th and 1 call since we lost. (but I did hate the call, I would prefer to go down fighting)
I am a TOB fan, he has a group of players with character and team players and hopefully increased graduation rates. (but I wish they could play with more ‘confidence’.)
TOB should have our support, this negative coach change talk can go on AFTER the season.

  18. theTHRILL 11/07/2010 at 11:42 AM #

You people who pulled for UNC yesterday are going to feel even dirtier when we lose 1 or 2 more games and you realize that their win over FSU was worthless to us in the end.

  19. coach13 11/07/2010 at 11:55 AM #

If NCSTATE makes it to Charlotte, the rest of the league, or at least the Atlantic, should be embarassed.

  20. TheAliasTroll 11/07/2010 at 11:58 AM #

It’s stupid as sh!t to want a new coach at this point in the season when we’re the closest we’ve been to an ACC championship in 3 decades. Trying to stick our OWN head coach (and a former marine) with a nickname that has a “pussy” connotation is childish and is the equivalent of being a grade A douche bag.

It could be argued that coach made a statement to the defense that he trusted them to help get the win, in a defensive game. Guess what, the defense made the 3 and out stop and got the ball back. Was it the right call in the long run, or what I wanted to see called? No. Some of you need to quit acting like a bunch of damn toddlers.

If anything, giving up on the team now is being a “gutless wonder”.

  21. 66pack 11/07/2010 at 12:16 PM #

ALIIAS if what you say is true it is because this conf is in the worst shape at any time in last 3 decades.being one of the worst is not a good thing.LEE LIVES ON.

  22. JeremyH 11/07/2010 at 12:34 PM #

I didn’t like the 4th and 1 call either, but realize that the 4 yard punt was not *a part* of that decision, and if you fail to separate the two the decision seems much worse that it appeared.

TOB was instilling confidence in the defense and was counting on Clemson playing conservatively for 3 downs when backed up in their own territory. The failed punt ruined the strategy.

I didn’t like the call, but I am certainly not calling for TOB’s head. That would be quite silly for several reasons.

What I have noticed is we are not nearly as good as some of you guys think we are. We are how we play. Greene has slippery fingers and RW throws a lot of red zone interceptions, and we have no consistent running game against above average competition. I would say we are lucky to be in the position we are in and we should support the staff and players in each and every game left, they need it.

  23. LRM 11/07/2010 at 12:43 PM #

Jeremy, I actually agree with what you’re saying. We’re not that good, me make too many mistakes and we’re absolutely lucky to be in this position (especially after yesterday). Which makes TOB’s decision to punt even more befuddling to me, because we essentially gave up the chance to keep the drive going and *finally* put Clemson away in a game we had controlled for three quarters. Once we punted, we needed far too much to go our way for winning that game to be realistic. That’s what irks me about it…we controlled our destiny and we gave the durn ball away.

  24. Rick 11/07/2010 at 1:08 PM #

“It’s stupid as sh!t to want a new coach at this point in the season when we’re the closest we’ve been to an ACC championship in 3 decades”

Is this the new cry and hue for the TGW backers?
    At least he is closer?
The team has looked AWFUL in the ECU and CU games. AWFUL
This is a team with no injuries playing a team missing its best player.
Can you imagine how bad we would have turtled if RW was out?

No excuses. We were the better team and we played like crap and gave up.
You can polish the old turd all you want but it was a horrid example of coaching yesterday.

  25. BJD95 11/07/2010 at 1:25 PM #

Even assuming a good punt (and the most likely scenario is a touchback), holding Clemson’s offense to a three and out is still less likely than gaining one yard on 4th and 1. Which makes the decision a no-brainer.

Plus, even if you miss on 4th and 1, you still have the same shot at the three and out, and all you’ve lost is, on average, 20 yards of field position.

It’s clearly the wrong decision, and TGW’s bull-headed defense of same (pointing the finger instead at a student athlete who has performed well above and beyond all reasonable expectations this year) makes the TGW moniker all the more appropriate.
