Thorp, Baddour, Davis appear before UNC-CH BOT — UPDATED 3:50 p.m.

Doing a great impression of three guys standing uncomfortably against the wall at an 8th-grade dance, UNC-CH’s Chancellor, Athletic Director, and Football coach appeared before UNC-CH’s Board of Trustees to talk about the massive ongoing scandals.  It is widely thought that UNC-CH BOT members were responsible for hiring Butch in the first place, so we should not be surprised by today’s made-for-media dog and pony show. You can read about it here in an article posted by the N & O.

I think the key quotes from that article are:

“We have found no information that Coach Davis was involved in any of the problems that have surfaced, and I know he feels a lot of responsibility for what has happened,” Thorp said.

and

Thorp and Baddour said the NCAA and the school are close to wrapping up the investigative phase of the probe. NCAA investigators will turn over their findings to the enforcement staff, beginning the process of determining what sanctions – if any – UNC will receive.

So the findings have not even been turned over to the NCAA’s enforcement staff — that is key information and might explain why UNC-CH fans are running around saying ridiculous things about the NCAA not finding any violations, etc.  The NCAA apparently hasn’t even started the process of evaluating the facts for violations.  When asked when the entire NCAA process might be over, Baddour said:

“I don’t know what to tell you on that,” Baddour said. “That is out of our control.”

The BOT is so interested in protecting the integrity of the University that one of the few questions asked of the three by the BOT (if not the only question) was to Butch about the impact of the scandals on his recruiting.  They really mean business over there!

Before I sign off I want to ask readers to scroll down the front page of the blog for new items, particularly ones that have been “bumped down” — so much new stuff is going up all the time during this busy season that it is easy to miss great pieces that take a lot of time to write and deserve your attention.  Also, our message boards are busier than ever.  There are great discussions on many topics at a depth we can’t get to on the front page.

3:50 update

Some additional quotes from today’s media performance have come to light and they are too good not to share.

From this extended article  posted by the News and Observer we learn of this cringe-inducing quote, which sounds like something a teenage girl would write in a love letter during History class:

“I believe you were the right fit when we hired you and I continue to believe that,” Baddour told Davis during the meeting. “In fact, I believe it even more strongly now.”

Does anyone else find that quote just totally bizarre?  What is going on over there, seriously?  This is Alice in Wonderland stuff.  Strengthening that conclusion is this quote from Thorp:

“We don’t have plans to take any more actions than the ones we’ve taken,” Thorp said. “Obviously something could happen. Some information could come out or the NCAA could send us information that we don’t know about that could change that. But we’ve been working on this for four months … and we don’t think there’s a lot of new information that’s going to come out, so we feel really good about where we are.”

“we feel really good about where we are”?  I don’t even know what to say.  Also buried in that quote is the idea that Thorp thinks that the NCAA could know something that UNC-CH doesn’t.  Now that’s interesting.

I also want to elevate these excellent thoughts into the main entry:

the same Carolina fans and power structure that seem to support Butch Davis and think that it is acceptable that he wasn’t doing his job to ‘know’…are the same people that have criticized Jim Valvano for 20+ years because he ran a ‘loose program’ and didn’t know that his players were doing when they sold shoes and tickets in private and weren’t sharing their exploits with the world on the internet.

LOVE the hypocrisy.

It is becoming increasingly evident that there’s more to this story that is not being discussed, i.e. BOT and/or booster money going somewhere that all of them are trying to cover up…could be that they know Butch blows the whistle if he goes down and they are scared to death..

As I’ve said before, I don’t believe they are smart enough to have covered all the tracks and it’s just a matter of time until the explosion is bigger!

Here’s the WRAL write up. The BOT declares Butch’s job, “Safe.” Why? Because he promises to institute some rules that he didn’t think to institute before? Because he now promises to look after his players and coaches? Because integrity is important, all of a sudden?

“You know he’s lying, because his lips are moving.” -Anonymous Cleveland Browns NFL player that played for Butch.

The interesting thing, to me, is the fact that they are not trying to act preemptively with regards to self-imposed penalties.

“What we have to do now is hear back from the NCAA as to what they think, if they think anything at all, if there are violations,” Baddour said. “We are not at the stage where we are thinking we know what the information is.”

So, first of all, they don’t even know what the NCAA is thinking. Baddour doesn’t really know what the ‘information’ is telling the NCAA, and what sanctions might be being considered. If the NCAA hands down some drastic sanctions, we are really going to see the politicos scramble. They are all toeing the party line and stalling until they find out how bad this thing is going to be. Their motivation right now, is to maintain support amongst the boosters and the fans, to brace themselves for the impact and to position themselves so as not to get hung when this thing is all said and done.

There’s also an article at WRAL ( http://www.wralsportsfan.com/college_football/story/8646813 ) that says they’re not self-imposing any sanctions on themselves.

Normally, schools do this hoping it is a lesser punishment than what the NCAA would have handed down to them.

Since they are not punishing themselves, is that an indication that they don’t expect much from the NCAA in the way of sanctions?

  4. ppack3 11/18/2010 at 3:39 PM #

^I don’t know. Normally, that’s the protocol for academic violations, but I don’t think that that’s the case with the Agent ‘Prong.’ Did Memphis Basketball ‘suggest’ their own penalty. Did USC? I don’t think so. Maybe I’m wrong.

I think that all of this means that the NCAA was much like the IRS. They came in and collected evidence. They put that evidence back into their briefcase, and walked out saying, “We’ll let you know.”

Thorp didn’t hire Butchie; Moeser did.

    More specifically: Baddour did.

    Blame where it is due.

Also, I tell you again that they’re waiting to fire Butchie until after the NCAA proves wrongdoing by him and his staff so they won’t have to pay him any. Let’s not be naive enough to think that $ doesn’t play a role here.

Pass the Butchie on the left-hand side…

  6. BJD95 11/18/2010 at 4:47 PM #

Thorp certainly left it open to Homeboy’s take, for sure. I believe he’s posturing to salve the big donors who will be mad when he’s ultimately “forced” to fire Butch (and Baddour).

Well, imagine the “I support Butch” after 1500 hrs this Saturday and NC State once again beats the Holes….. Heck I might even purchase and wear one of those shirts.

By the way: Thanks for reloading the cat & car video, I have missed getting a laugh out of that.

  9. ppack3 11/18/2010 at 6:01 PM #

The BOT approved the hire. Baddour is directly responsible for the search and recommendation of Butch Davis to the BOT. If this is wrong, please let me know. But, I know Thorpe is not to ‘blame’ for Butch’s hire.

And, I’m unconvinced that anything has been found, as in ‘hard evidence,’ against Butch. Rarely, in these situations, does a Mob Boss, uh, I mean a Head Coach, allow a paper trail to be connected to him. His lackeys take the fall. Butch just moves on.

It officially appears that they are drinking something more than the Kool-Aid over in Chapel Hell. When the NCAA investigation comes out with their findings/sanctions I hope to have fair warning so I can sit back and watch the fireworks ’cause it is going to be legen….wait for it….freakin’….wait for it….DARY!!!!

    bottom line; power play.
    BD fires JB.
    DB fires BD.
    HT fires DB.
    this is Thorp’s time.

Arrrrrrrrgh!!! Where are all the rational, logical people over there? Un-frigggin-believable!

That was nothing more than a glorified pep rally. If they keep BMFCD, then Matt Doherty should raise some hell about his dismissal with no second chance. I hope the NCAA caught a whiff of something rotten in ol’ Roy’s program during one of their 7 visists to the UNX campus this year.

I’d like to know more about this one… like exactly who? NC Secretary of State? Or the IRS? And what was the source of this rumor?
