Minor at Duke football game discovered passed out in port-a-john

Full article.

After reading the comments section of that article it appears that a Duke student brought their 14 year old sibling to the “Tailgate” held before the Duke vs. UVA football game and the sibling was later found abandoned in a portable bathroom. The reaction of Duke University canceling “Tailgate” is absolutely the right decision.

Tailgate as students currently know it has been canceled, Vice President for Student Affairs Larry Moneta confirmed Monday.

A minor, who was the guest of a student, was found unconscious in a Porta Potty at the end of the Nov. 6 Tailgate, said Chief John Dailey of the Duke University Police Department. A security officer found the teenager after most students had left Tailgate, and Emergency Medical Services was called to transport the teenager to the Duke Emergency Department, Dailey added.

Moneta confirmed that to the best of his knowledge the teenager is OK, adding that the minor was the sibling of a Duke student.

This incident was the “predominant deciding factor” for the decision to end Tailgate, Moneta said. The Tailgate that was originally scheduled for Nov. 13 has been suspended, and Tailgates in upcoming years will likely be very different, he added.

“Tailgate has become an embarrassment—it has no connection to our football team,” Moneta said in an interview Monday. “Now it has to end. I think the notion that a young teenager could be discovered under these conditions just crosses the line.”

I think its embarrassing that you capitalize the T in tailgate Duke.

Tom Stafford approves of this action…

Here’s an idea, how about we hold the sibling responsible, and not the mean old monster “Tailgating”….

Also, they “Tailgate” @ Duke games?

All 12 Duke football fans will be heartbroken.

Hope the kid is ok though. My parents would kill me if I did that to my brother….

Yeah, I/m trying to figure out if they are talking about tailgating, or some entity that has named itself ‘Tailgate.’ Damn, this IS Duke. I guessed that if they capitalized the word ‘Tailgate,’ there must be a reason, right?

If they are talking about tailgating, in general, then what’s to cancel? Don’t the students just tailgate in their dorms for Duke Football? Or, pitch a tent in K-ville?

Cutcliff came out before the UVA game and said that the student turnout for football games is terrible. And then, he went on to praise the fan and Alumni support at the games. Maybe the students were trying to send a message? ‘Talk crap about our student support, and we’ll drop our little brother/sister in the crapper?’ I’m just looking for answers, here. Maybe a ‘5-hour rule’ should be enacted. That way, nothing like this will ever happen again…for sure.

BTW, I would hate to think what ‘rules’ would’ve been set forth if the PTB knew what went on at our tailgates in the early-mid 90’s. I don’t even want to know what goes on now. However, I have heard tale of some absolutely insane (even by my generation’s standards) tactics for getting drunk without anyone knowing it. When I say insane…I mean it. There’s no telling what methods this 14 year old used to get his/her drunk on.

baxter: Apparently “Tailgate” is an official event. Obviously, students can still tailgate unofficially, but the university stopped the official “Tailgate” for obvious reasons.

I saw some of these people over there a couple of years ago. They students gather with cases of cheap beer, dressed up in crazy costumes, and get annihilated. It sounds great, but apparently it doesn’t translate into support at football games. Lots of them pass out in their dorms and never make it to the football game. Of course, Duke has been terrible so I can’t blame them either. All in all, it was a rather strange scene over there even fully supporting the right of students to get annihilated for football games.

And the 14 year old will have a great anecdote someday when he/she is telling his/her story at an AA meeting…

I don’t think this is the right decision. I think it is the right decision for Duke University officials that want to protect themselves from a future lawsuit.

This is a knee-jerk reaction from officials due to the actions of ONE. And it ruins the fun for all the other RESPONSIBLE folks.

People die in car accidents, too. But we don’t ban driving. This country is being held hostage by frivolous lawsuits. If judges would hand down commonsense rulings, then the rest of us could have our fun. And administrators could LET us have our fun.

Where is personal accountability in this country?

“I would say that Tailgate is one of the primary reasons why I came to Duke”

I have a feeling that is not the official party line.

  10. Daily Update 11/09/2010 at 11:58 AM #

bradley123: Again, Duke isn’t banning tailgating. They are just discontinuing the official party “Tailgate”.

It was the only move Duke could make. Students can still do whatever they want for pre-game though.

I would have to be falling down drunk to watch a Duke football game as well.

I went to the Duke vs. Alabama game and saw the madness. It is wall to wall people wearing neon clothes and plastic neon sunglasses. Duke should have been embarrassed about their football tailgating situation before this! If I am Cutcliff, I would be complaining about the student attendance too if most of your season ticket holders are Alabama students and Alumini.

Was this in one of the porta potties that is part of the visitors locker room?

  14. wolfman1959 11/09/2010 at 1:31 PM #

Poor Kid….hope he was ok..can’t imagine abandoning a younger sibling like that…:(…Anyone recall Phillip Rivers having to relieve himself in the woods during a Wolfpack vs. Dookies game due to the visitors facilities being so far away from the actual football field ? Hilarious…

  15. packof81 11/09/2010 at 3:14 PM #

That kid must have been totally wasted to pass out in a porta potty.

  16. theghost 11/09/2010 at 3:30 PM #

I thought “tailgating” at Duke involved staying at home eating pizza and watching other schools’ games on television.

  17. john of sparta 11/09/2010 at 6:41 PM #

    all about the lawsuit.
    Duke is private property.
14-y-o gets drunk at your house: YOUR FAULT.

  18. Pack Mentality 11/09/2010 at 9:14 PM #

Sounds like some people on here (not me) support canceling a party that the students like a lot because a teenager got drunk.

Did these same people take exception to decreasing our tailgating hours because 2 white trash dudes murdered 2 Marines?

    Just sayin…

Everyone keeps saying the older sibling “abandoned” the younger. Well, letting your 14 year old get pass-out drunk is definitely a problem, although at a party like that, I’m sure some of this was happening outside of the older sibling’s direct notice, since I’m sure he/she was drinking/partying/talking too.

But pass-out-drunk people routinely wander off without telling anyone where they are going. Also, if the younger is a girl, I’ve seen girls go from happy/tipsy, to fall over pass out drunk in a matter of minutes. So 3 minutes later, how is the older supposed to know where the younger went? Panic time!!!

I’m not absolving the older sibling of responsibility. But they didn’t have to “abandon” the younger for this to happen. I’m a younger sibling, and I managed to get in trouble even when my older sibs were paying attention.

Key point: They never would have permitted me to drink/party with them at 14 either.

I’m wondering what parent would say to their 14yo “HEY! I have a great idea, why don’t I take you to Durham for the weekend with your brother!”

….then again I think I did the same with one of mine when he was 15yo to spend the weekend with ‘a poster who will remain nameless’. If the younger got drunk, I never found out about it… and that’s a good thing.

Although I truly love to pick on the Dookies, I find it ridiculous that the university is being held responsible for this (although I understand that in this day and age, the adminstration is probably just covering themselves legally). Instead, let’s concentrate on the bum of a brother/sister that left his/her sibling in the porta-potty. Try explaining THAT to Mom next week…
