Pack rolls 111-73; Freshman trio score 51 points

From J.P. Giglio of the N&O:

As promised, the team played faster and the freshmen trio made quite an impression in the rout at Reynolds Coliseum.

Lorenzo Brown, Ryan Harrow and C.J. Leslie each scored 17 points in the Wolfpack’s final warm-up before the regular season starts on Friday.

“We’ve been waiting for this a long time,” said Harrow, who added a team-best eight assists off the bench. “It’s pretty crazy that we all scored 17 points.”

Not only did the freshman score almost half of NC State’s points, but they also contributed 16 of our 26 assists(Harrow 8, Brown 6) while only committing 5 turnovers(Brown 4, Harrow 1). It was Pfeiffer and the real tests come later in November and December, however there was a noticeable increase in overall talent on the court last night. While the freshman were each outstanding, the veterans didn’t disappoint either. Scott Wood went 4 for 9 from behind the arc to finish with 14 points, Tracy Smith added 17 points, and Richard Howell corralled 10 rebounds. Even C.J. Williams played well in the 2nd half giving the Pack a 6th player in double figures.

Initially Lorenzo Brown’s size, fluidity, skills and athleticism stood as he got off to a quick start with a couple of 3’s and an alley oop dunk. However, Ryan Harrow was near perfect on the night(his 1 turnover was an offensive foul). His ability to penetrate and then score or dish is rare…floaters in traffic, bank shots from tough angles, or passes to open teammates for easy scores. He did it all as he continued to show the type of instincts and ability to read plays before they happen.

Lowe’s team had never once broken the century mark in his previous 4 years at NC State. Here is an interesting stat from Gopack:

A smiling Lowe talked extensively about his team’s up-tempo style, a break from his first four years when the Pack broke the 90-point barrier just two times in 133 regular-season and postseason games.

When it comes down to crunch time, Javi just doesn’t have the natural quickness to get it done. He gets going too fast for what his capabilities are and he dribbles it off his foot or goes up in the air with nowhere to pass. Sure he gets hot from the field occasionally, but more times than not he doesn’t. Sure he’s emotional and sometimes that’s good, but it appears that he goes overboard at times and does not remain level-headed…combine that with trying to be quicker than he actually is and well, you all have seen what the results are. The end of the GT ACC Tournament game last season is a prime synopsis of what I’m talking about.

It’s nothing personal. It is what it is. Maybe some of you can help me out with this…didn’t Javi start as a freshman? If so, and he continues to start this year, how would he compare historically with other 4-year ACC starters?

Rick: In conference games only, we were 9th in the ACC in rebounding margin. Maybe that is a good sign that we improved as the season went on since most of the OOC games were prior to the ACC season and we were 12th counting all games as you pointed out.

As far as talent not mattering in regards to rebounding…I would be willing to bet that the teams with the tallest and most athletic starting lineups likely led the conference(statement made before I did the research later in this post). Size, strength, good hands, leaping ability, quickness, etc…all are factors in being a good rebounder(and a defender for that matter). Physical attributes aren’t 100% of it, but it certainly plays a large role in how well teams rebound(and play defense).

-Duke’s starting lineup(#1 in rebounding margin):
    1. Scheyer 6’5″
    2. N. Smith 6’2″ (insanely athletic as well)
    3. K. Singler 6’8″
    4. L. Thomas 6’8″
    5. Zoubek 7’1″

    average = 6’7″

Off the bench, Duke played a 6’4″ guard(Dawkins) and three other players all listed at 6’10″(Plumlee, Plumlee and Kelly).

    -FSU(#2 in rebounding margin)
    1. Kitchen 6’4″
    2. Dulkys 6’5″
    3. Reid 6’8″
    4. Singleton 6’9″
    5. Solomon 7’1″

    average – 6’8″

    -UVA(#12 in rebounding margin):
    1. J. Evans 5’11”
    2. Zeglinksi 6’0″
    3. Landesberg 6’6″
    4. Scott 6’8″
    5. Meyinsse 6’9″

    Average = 6’4″

    NC State(#9 in rebounding margin):
    1. Javi 6’0″
    2. Degand 6’4″
    3. Wood 6’6″
    4. Horner 6’9″
    5. Smith 6’8″

    Average 6’5″

So the impact of height definitely plays a role in the rebounding margin category. That is without being able to measure overall athleticism which impacts rebounding as well as faster, quicker, better jumpers with long wing spans play bigger on the court.

If anybody saw the game last night and thinks Havi will be starting long you obviously didn’t pay any attention at all. Harrow will start eventually. For those that weren’t there, first play We rebound, Havi brings it up court and dribble’s off his foot. Luckily it went to our player or it may have been another ACC tournament fiasco. As far as Painter or Vandy starting at the 5, forget about it. Painter is a backup and Vandy will get spot duty, nothing more. There will be plenty of minutes to go around for what looked to be any combination of what will work best that night. We have options like never before and I for one love it. Who starts is pointless. I will take 5 or 6 players in double digit’s every night over one or two people carrying the load. This team will be a load comes mid to late season. I wasn’t concerned at any point last night with any of the combinations as to who was gonna score. I think this is the year we break back in the mix as far as being a threat everywhere we play. Relax and enjoy this ride. WOLFPACK IN DA HOUSE!

I just looked at the rebounding margin stats for 2008/2009. Duke was 8th in rebounding margin yet somehow made it to 1st in the conference the following year.

    Duke’s starting lineup in 2009:
    1. Scheyer 6’5″
    2. N. Smith 6’2″
    3. Gerald Henderson 6’4″
    4. Kyle Singler 6’8″
    5. L. Thomas 6’8″

    average height – 6’5″

Zoubek came off the bench mostly, but did start 6 ACC games(Thomas started 9). They only had 1 Plumlee as well who was a freshman and only played in 9 conference games.

One year later, with Singler now at 3, Zoubek and Thomas starting, and two big, strong athletic Plumlees coming off the bench, Duke leads the league in rebounding margin.

As far as the Leslie vs. Wood discussion, maybe you go with CJ against taller, more athletic teams(assuming he plays at a high level this year) to help us rebound. He would be our tallest player at 6’9″ and obviously plays bigger with his long arms and leaping ability. Maybe Painter and Vanderberg are ready to contribute this year making us even bigger at the 4 and 5 positions?

It is certainly much easier for a coach when he has options as far as who to play unlike like last year for Lowe. I am very excited about the season.

If you want to look at how well a team does defensively on the boards, it’s better to look at KenPom’s ORe stat. This looks at the % of rebounds the offense gets against your defense. We were 11th out of 12 teams. UMd was the worst in the ACC.

Until Leslie starts playing defense on every play I think Scott Wood deserves to be the starter. Anyone who watched the game last night saw Leslie shooting 3’s that were way off… a few actually went in, but didnt look good. Also he just forces things and against a higher level of competition the turnovers would skyrocket. Wood plays solid defense and has a beautiful stroke from downtown. Ryan Harrow and Lo Brown will open him up on the perimeter all season long. Leslie does bring us more athleticism but that doesnt mean he wouldnt be a huge lift off the bench.

“So the impact of height definitely plays a role in the rebounding margin category. That is without being able to measure overall athleticism which impacts rebounding as well as faster, quicker, better jumpers with long wing spans play bigger on the court.”

Let me restate what I was trying to say because I definitely agree bigger taller players get more rebounds.

When I say “it is not a talent issue” in this context, what I am trying to say is if it continues this year then it is a coaching philosophy because we have enough size and speed to rebound well this year.

For example, I noticed that Pfeiffer had 40 rebounds to our 48. Does that mean they are almost as big, athletic and quick as us?

  8. hball57 11/10/2010 at 5:47 PM #

You all make good points about rebounding. I wish you would look at rebounding stats while looking at missed shots. For example, on Pfeiffer shots we got 34 rebounds, Pfeiffer 14; on our shots we got 14 rebounds, Pfeiffer 20. So we had 41% offensive rebounds, they had 37% offensive rebounds.

  9. wolfbuff 11/10/2010 at 6:06 PM #

Without defense and rebounding, there is no running game. D1 teams will be back on defense by the time we take the ball out of bounds. We may catch someone sleeping once in a while. But otherwise, if we’re not getting rebounds, we’re not running, and we’ll be stuck in our half-court set – again.

    The bottom line is this:

For those of us that wanted Herb gond, this is justification. For those of us that remember the 70’s and 80’s, well this is what we remember and this is what we wanted.

For those of you that don’t rembemer the 70’s and 80’s, shut the F up and sit back and wait until next year!!!! Really.

This is the way we play basketaball at NCSU. Mix in a few “trick” defenses, and all of us that do remember are happy campers.

We can beat Duke and we can beat UNC and we can win an ACC tournament playing ball the way we play ball. The way ball is supposed to be played.

And just for the record. The Red Coat Rocks, but with this team I epect El Sid to brake out his plaid one!

hball – if we hold our opponents to 29% of the rebounds when we’re on D, and we get back 40% of our misses – we’ll have an awesome season.

  14. bigwolfpacker 11/11/2010 at 1:24 AM #

Anyone who thinks Wood is overrated is completely wrong. 8 pts and game and 37% on 3 ptrs as a freshman is pretty good. Add to that he was easily our 2nd best player most games last season, started every game and plays great d and you have a solid piece of the puzzle. He will be in with Smith, Howell, Brown, and either Gonzalez or Harrow at the end.

“There are many weapons that can create their own shots/assists that it will open things up for others …”

^When is the last time we could say this?

Who in the world considers a high school 3 star top 100-150 kid that steps into the acc as a freshman, start every game average 8 points/gm and shoots 37% fro the 3….overrated?

    Tough crowd

I listened to Lowe’s pre-game interview the other night, and I got a strong sense he is moving away from the Tracy Smith at the 4 position experiment. He said in the style they are going to play this year, the 4 needs to be able to run the floor and Tracy struggles with that, but CJL can do it. He said therefore we will see Tracy at the 5 and CJL at the 4.

Based on that and other comments, I think the long-term lineup is shaping up as

    • Tracy at the 5
    • CJL at the 4
    • Howell backing up the 4 and the 5
    • Harrow at the 1
    • Brown at the 2
    • Javi backing up the 1 and the 2
    • Wood at the 3
    • CJW backing up the 3
    • Limited minutes for Painter and JV

I think a lot of people on this site have said this would be the best lineup, and it sounds like Sid is starting to agree.

So going against the front line of Zeller, Henson, and Barnes…which one do we put Wood on?
