Tuesday Update – TOB and BJD Now Singing From Same Hymnal

Not that Tom O’Brien has any idea who I am, or that many of you care. But what I read in the newspaper this morning was extremely reassuring:

“If we were a great team, we’d be in the final,” O’Brien said during an interview Monday in his office. “But we’re a pretty good team. And to be pretty good after the three years we’ve went through is really a giant step forward for the program.”

Perhaps Tom and I each just needed some time to cool down. I was angry about losing the Atlantic Division and the chance to play for a title (even as a significant underdog). TOB was (understandably) a little defensive after losing the same, which is apparently just the way he processes disappointment. So, in the immediate aftermath – he was throwing around the word “great” and I threw out “football Sendek.” I was too raw to remember my favorite Costanza mantra. My bad.

In summary – I still agonize over the lost opportunity. Everyone does, or should. It was still a pretty good season, and hopefully will be remembered more as a stepping stone than the apex of the Tom O’Brien era. The head man himself seems to think so, and that’s very encouraging. After all, NC State football and Tom O’Brien are still each other’s last, best chance to get over that elusive damned hump.

Thanks for this BJD. This was the mantra I was trying to explain over on the board and Tom said exactly what I said. This was a good season. Not great. We should appreciate it for what it was and, while it could have been better (and perhaps should have been better), the 2010 football season is a breath of fresh air that we haven’t had since #17.

    I like this factoid:

“The Wolfpack did it while playing a schedule that included nine teams that are bowl eligible.”

  3. StateFans 11/30/2010 at 9:56 AM #

Yep…we played one of the toughest schedules we possibly could — with no Virginia or Duke in the ACC.

No doubt we were PHENOMENALLY CLOSE to a HUGE YEAR.

^That only serves to excite me about the future. Not dampen my spirits.

If we have four straight years of 8-4, then I can understand people asking if we’ve hit the top. But, that would be quite a nice situation in which to find ourselves.

You really shouldn’t leave straight lines like that lying around. 🙂

Thanks BJD, good to see you back off the ledge. I think this is spot on.

I want to know what the song is.

  7. Sam92 11/30/2010 at 10:05 AM #

I’m disappointed too – and how we can go up 14 points early, and then let a team rattle off 30+ unanswered points is still a mystery to me (and makes me skeptical of the coaches) – and we did it twice this season!

nonetheless, the way i felt before the season was that i wanted to see *significant* improvement – and i did. 8 wins is not bad, and maybe it will be 9. if TOB could consistently turn in 9 wins, then maybe every so often 10 or even 11 would show up, which would not be so bad.

  8. goalielax 11/30/2010 at 10:07 AM #

do you think TOB has to, at a minimum, replicate this year in 2011?

  9. LRM 11/30/2010 at 10:10 AM #

I think TOB makes a fine point. I also think he probably understands how passionately irrational some of us can be after a devastating loss, especially when we could almost taste that Atlantic Division title and a chance at our first conference title in a generation. But we had our first winning record since ’05, won eight games for only the fourth time since Sheridan left (’94, ’00, ’02), we beat Carolina again, and we’re going to play in a decent bowl game. Not too shabby.

But he still shouldn’t have punted…

    goalieax –

    Yes, at minimum.

  11. phillypacker 11/30/2010 at 10:11 AM #

By my calculation, we lose 3/4 starters(2 WRrs and a lineman (Vermiglio) + Wilson(probably). Wilson replaced by a superb, seasoned QB in Glennon. Vermiglio is replaced by Rob Crisp, Spencer has hands made of brick, as does Jarvis Williams. So no real drop off with those two. Add Creecy.

On Defense we lose 3 starters (Akinniyi, Mageo and Nate Irving) who are replaced by three very solid upper classmen. We get a solid punter/kicker, long snapper in place of 2 seniors/3 seniors on Special Teams. Plus our defensive backs are far more seasoned.

I really doubt that team will do as badly as finishing 8-4.

  12. StateFans 11/30/2010 at 10:19 AM #

    goalielax –

Yes. I think that hitting 8 wins next year is now evolving into an expectation…and, a fair one.

We have to replace some stars, no doubt. But, the bulk of the team returns and a lot of youngsters are now very experienced. We play a much easier OOC schedule next year and I am willing to bet an easier ACC schedule.

So, winning 8 games next year should be much easier than this year. So, if we aren’t quite as good next year; we can still get to about the same spot.

I’ve been saying this for a few years now…if Glennon stays, then I would think 2012 is another chance for us to ‘break through’ with a very strong team.

  13. BJD95 11/30/2010 at 10:19 AM #

I’m worried more about 2012. Glennon and most of the OL would be seniors, and we get FSU at home. That’s now the year to win the title.

As long as we win that title, I’m not that concerned about whether we are consistently “pretty good” in between. It’s all about ACC title for me, and I think that’s true for TOB as well. That’s what his resume (for legacy purposes, this is his retirement job) lacks. He needs one just as bad as NC State does.

Daily Update posted the following on another thread and I don’t think he would mind me putting it here —

The criticism of TOB is illogical. With the way things looked going into the season, we were headed to a sub-.500 record, a coaching change and a horrible recruiting class. The program was on the verge of becoming a 3-5 year rebuilding job. Instead, TOB did everything he had to do in the off-season to turn the program around immediately and almost won the Atlantic division. He recruited a strong freshman class, developed players, and strengthened the staff.

It isn’t like FSU was chopped liver this year. They were a couple of plays from going 11-1 and being ranked in the top 10.

As far as TOB and “not winning the big one”, no coach at BC or NC State ever wins the “big one”. Not winning the “big one” is much more a reflection of where TOB has coached as opposed to somehow proof that he is inadequate as a football coach.

The whole concept in hiring TOB was matching his abilities as a coach with NC State’s natural advantages relative to Boston College. BC is a great institution with and has some selling points as a football program, however NC State’s lower academic standards and location in the South give us a huge advantage over BC. The same number of wins at NC State gets you better bowls, more publicity, and in theory better recruiting classes. Win 8+ 3-4 years in a row and all of a sudden we have a chance to actually raise our ceiling as a program. We won’t ever be a national title contender every year, however becoming a VT isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility. But the only way to get there is to have successive winning seasons, solid bowl appearances, and top 25 finishes.

Not disagreeing with your conclusion, but I don’t see how you can call a QB with 50 career pass attempts ‘seasoned’.

Hey! Is there an echo in here?

BJD…did your meds arrive yesterday in the mail??? I know I can really get PO’d at times, but thought you were jumping off the cliff..

Was the song “Holy, Holy, Holy” referred to our pass defense?(that’s “holey” who might want to nitpick the spelling).

There have to be many that are appropriate…

Well here we go again. The same old story. WOLFPACK MEDIOCRICY. Wolpack fans upset at first at losing to Clemson and then after a couple of days, well that’s okay and then the Maryland game and to a large degree upset fans, but then after a couple of days, well an 8-4 record not too bad. What kind of bowl will we get. Oh by the way the reason we lost to Maryland was the fact the refs knocked us out of a first down with about a minute to go. Oh I see we could have beat them with one minute remaining if we could have just gotten the ball. State fans wake the crapppt up. What did we do for two and a half quarters and what did our coaching staff do for two and a half quarters??? Is that the best excuse you can make. Give me a break and get a breath of reality!!!!!!!!!!!
And then our great coach saying an 8 and 4 record is a big step in the right direction. No kidding Coach.
It just amazes me the mentality of Wolfpack fans and Alumni. Why on earth reasonable adults can’t get beyond this mentality; this is the best we are going to be able to do is beyond me. Here we are with a coach that has had four years to turn things around and all he has to boast about is 8 and 4, no kidding. Try telling that to the people in Miami. That fellow had 4 to get it done and he didn’t and he is gone.
Here we are with this nice outstanding facility and look where we are at. Oh but we will get a bowl with uh, with uh, uhhh what kind of bowl and playing who for what. I guess so we can say we are 9 and 4 and drive some where in red and white. Wonder how long this mindset would last at Virginia Tech.
Folks we have a coach who has had time to get his ducks in a row and turn things around. Wake up and smell the roses. He is not a top tier football coach and you cannot make excuses for him. Examine his record at BC. Look at the coaches of the top 10-15 schools and look at how they operate. Look at the coach at Arkansas and what he has done in TWO YEARS. And friends that man means business. I hate to say this but the people in Raleigh at NC State are retarded when it comes to knowing a good hire as coach. This is as good as it is going to get. However I will clue you in on something. There is a fellow down the road a little piece (whether you like him “BD” and the cheats or not) who is going to beat the living day lights out of us for a long time and you better get use to it. WHY, because he is a top tier coach. We wouldn’t have the good sense to know one coming down the middle of the road in the broad open daylight. Sorry, real sorry I have to feel this way, but I am tired of playing second fiddle to everybody in the country when it comes to football. You can have my season tickets and my contributions to the Wolf pack Club. I have better things to do with my time and money.

When I read BJD’s postgame analysis I thought he had lost his mind. Of course I wasn’t going to say anything.

I too have walked away from the ledge but…

The fact remains that TOB and staff got outcoached on Saturday. Maryland is not more talented than us.

TOB is a good coach and more than competent but like BC fans told us he will get out-coached 1 or 2 games a year. This will make it tough for us to ever make it in ACC championship (but not impossible).

As TOB said ‘we are who we are’. We are NC State and TOB will be one of the better coaches in our football history. However, don’t expect any great seasons (ie ACC champions)…it’s just not very likely.

  21. Dogbreath 11/30/2010 at 11:06 AM #

Mike glennon HAS to be our Jim Druckenmiller if we aspire to be a VT level program. He needs to start the successive years of top 20 finishes.

As far as future QB’s, I think we have HUGE potential in the Taylor kid. He’s got all the intangibles (while not comparing him to Philip Rivers by any means) like Philip Rivers. He’s a good kid with a great head on his shoulders from a quality background. He’s a winner. He’s a leader. Most importantly, he’s not burdened by an overly-hyped recruitment or recruiting rating. (Unlike some of our post-Rivers QBs.) He’s just got a TON of potential.

I’m still sick over this loss enough that I don’t care to see sports on the evening news. I haven’t watched or listened to the coaches show(s). I know we’re not where we want to be yet, but we still had a very real shot at the ACCCG and blew it. I’m tired of State blowing it when it really matters. We’ve played in and lost several ACC championship games in basketball over the last decade. Even if the ACC is down (in general) in football, it still would have been a nice feather in our hat.

And to make matters worse, we still have Hole fans acting like beating THEM is all that matters to us. That Maryland loss still almost makes me vomit when I think about it. So I just do my best to not think about it. Part of me just wants college football to be over, so I can just move on to basketball. I almost don’t even care about whatever lousy bowl game we get. During that game, I’ll just be thinking about what might have been. No, what SHOULD have been. We blew the Clemson game and we blew the Maryland game. Win either of those and we’re in the championship game this weekend. It’s downright sickening.

I’m happy with our improvement over preseason expectations, though. As long as we continue improving, we can’t really complain. But with all that’s going on in Chapped Hole, this was a real chance to put our foot down and establish ourselves as the premier football program in this state. We could have distanced ourselves from the Holes a bit, and maybe turned our recruiting around. Now I feel like we’ve blown that. I hope I’m wrong. But if TOB’s recruiting continues to be terrible this year, it may be time to swap him out. Bill Cowher, if it comes to that, are you available?

It’s possible that we could have a season as good next year as we had this year, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if perhaps won 1 or 2 less games. In my opinion, many of the games we won this year could have gone either way – even the ones that we lost. I certainly expect us to be 6-6 or better… anything less would be a disappointment. My biggest reason for not expecting us to be better next year is that we might lose RW – who killed defenses with his running ability. Oh, and we lose Irving.

It’s clear that we have made great strides in the last 2 years, and that’s what’s important. I just wish that we would be able to recruit better.
