Coples, Reddick, Davis Should Be Suspended

It has been announced that UNC LB/thug Kevin Reddick will inexplicably be eligible to play this Saturday. Sadly, there’s not even any mention of DE/bigger thug Quinton Coples – who should be done for the season, including bowl game.

The best video of the catch and subsequent Reddick punch was shot by WTVD and can be seen here.

Let me explain further. Hole safety/general all-purpose asshole Deunta (“27akaTheHitMan”) Williams, previously suspended four games for improper benefits, apparently was blowing off some steam after going 0-for-his career against NC State. Discussing the Reddick incident – and an egregious late hit by Quinton Coples on Russell Wilson four plays earlier – Williams claimed his Hole brethren were retaliating for Wolfpack players allegedly spitting on them.

Not that you’ve seen much written about this topic. Fortunately, an eagle-eyed (eared?) SFN commenter brought it to our attention. We did confirm with a media member who was in the UNC locker room – Williams did in fact say it.

Now, I want you to go back (if you saved your game DVR) and watch the hit Coples put on Wilson, after picking up a huge 3rd and 19. Go ahead, I can wait. Ready now? Good. Watching live, I screamed very bad things about Coples at my TV, and felt ejection was warranted. The hit was at least 4 to 5 strides out of bounds, and Coples didn’t launch until he was 2-3 strides out of bounds himself.

With “Hitman’s” comments adding context, the hit is now clearly pre-meditated. Not only that, I see a pretty clear intent to injure. I also think it was no accident that Coples took his cheap shot when the penalty would only be 4 yards (half the distance to the goal) instead of 15. The fact that Reddick threw a punch 4 plays later (after a TD pass) only adds another layer of deliberate, pre-meditated conduct. And with this level of pre-meditation – including the stupidly admitted knowledge of a player involved in NEITHER cheap shot – how likely do you think it is that the coaching staff didn’t know anything?

It’s prefectly fair to hold Butch Davis (who should already be on his best behavior, but apparently is a slow learner) responsible for this type of headhunting. Additionally, Davis publicly criticized the officiating post-game, which earned Tracy Smith a one-game suspension last year.

Back to “Hitman’s” allegation. A stadium full of hostile patrons, a full officiating crew – and nobody else said word one about any spitting. Color me skeptical, at best. And even if it were true (in which case I would have expected TOB to take prompt, decisive action against such nonsense), it’s somehow a rational, proportionate response to (i) try to ruin a student-athlete’s professional career; and then (ii) punch a guy in the head? One of these days, they will pop off in the wrong place at the wrong time, and get their teeth kicked in.

These were not isolated incidents either.

Alert readers will remember the Donte Paige-Moss punch from their game with Miami this year.

If you want to see another Donte Paige-Moss punch, here you can see him take a cheap shot swing at Sterling Lucas after last year’s Wolfpack victory over UNC-CH.

Butch is building quite a program over there.  It has the on-field thuggery and off-field problems of the “old school” out-of-control Miami teams.  The parallels end there — those Miami teams actual won some games.

    McCallum,
Being either dumb as a stump and/or malicious isn’t mutually exclusive.

I didn’t see this posted yet, but for all of you media conspiracy people out there, Luke Decock described the incident as such:

“Williams pushed Reddick in the chest with two hands and Reddick responded by throwing a punch at Williams.”

The thing you State fans either didn’t see or are ignoring is number 5 looking at the student section and grabbing his crotch and pointing. Thats class.

SFN: Was this after he had been hit in the face by Kevin Reddick? Can’t get suspended for not having class.

Baxter, I’ve told you guys on more than one occaision that I sport extremely sensitive , almost rabbit like ears.

When that tuba player chose that particular time of occaision to exploit that fact, he most certainly did have it coming to him.

I had my eye on the freakin’ slide trombone guy also, but there were too many moving parts.

I’d love to hear Luke justify Williams pushing Reddick in the chest with two hands after watching the WRAL video linked above. What a joke.

Clearly the N&O does not care about accuracy.

O’Brien’s comments simply reflect the fact that UNC is a thuggish team. There are several incidents of UNC players throwing punches during football games, including twice in a row at NC State. That’s just a fact.

The thing I noticed about the “hail mary” replay is that during the scrum, a bunch of UNC players ran/were pushed out of the field of play along the endzone sidlines. Rameses, the mascot was right there. He saw the UNC players coming and immediately backed his rear end up against the sidline retaining wall. That is one smart animal right there

Tarholes are really classy folks, guys..Especially that SOB scumbag that keyed my car last fall while I was working in Chapel Hill. Really classy folks..

Now if the SOB scumbag wants to man up and meet me in an alley one on one, bring it on!

Dog, while I agree with you in principle that the “players will deal with it themselves”, the thing that grinds on my “one last raw nerve” with Swofford is that “if it hadn’t involved a Carolina player, then both would have been suspended this week”.

Folks, Coples is not smart enough to calculate the resulting penalty yardage of his late hit on Wilson during the play – you are giving him WAY TOO MUCH credit. He’s a thug, was pissed off that Wilson converted the first down, and took a cheap shot. Period. He was penalized for it, even though it was only half the distance. Too bad for us that it wasn’t more, but there is no way this Neanderthal was calculating the ‘benefit’ of the reduced yardage on the fly.

He simply had the opportunity to lay a cheap shot on our most valuable offensive weapon, and took it. Glad Russell wasn’t injured in the process.

I agree that Reddick should be held out of the Duke game, if not by decree from ‘Homer’ Swofford, then on principle by Coach Davis. However, as Coach Davis has no principles, Reddick will play.

Swofford should be fired. Immediately. Without delay. Post haste. NOW !!! It is absolutely unbelievable that a conference with the stature and clout of the ACC would stand for having an alum of one of its member institutions serve as Commissioner over all disciplinary actions, when his bias is painfully and blatantly obvious, as most recently displayed by his rush to action against Florida State while remaining absolutely silent regarding Agentgate/Tutorgate/Alumnigate/Masterbate over on his precious Hill.

No NCAA officials showed up at FSU due to the women’s soccer coach’s actions. However, the NCAA might as well be paying room & board at UNC-CH, as many times as they’ve been on campus. And yet, not a single peep out of Johnny Blue’s office…

I hate Carolina, by the way…

    On the Coples late hit:
I could see that it wasn’t premeditated. He had been chasing RW from the very beginning of the play and stuck with him. I could understand wanting a little bit of reward for running all over the field.
On the other hand, to say that he couldn’t have calculated the short yardage on the penalty may be overstating it. He may not have been calculating that the penalty would only result in 4 yards, but you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to understand something along the lines of: “If Russell Wilson gets near the end zone (short explanation of what the end zone is), penalties are acceptable.” Not saying that happened, but I don’t think lack of intelligence would prevent someone from planning something like that.

By the way, let’s not forget Reddick’s knee to the face/kick in the face even before the punch.

Homeboy – you caught me 😉 What gave it away ???

  16. jhmd2000 11/23/2010 at 9:41 PM #

I do love that some of you think #48’s hit after the Spencer catch was premediated. Clearly, he was lying in wait for Wilson to throw the designed play off of Searcy’s tip into Spencer’s waiting arms. Yep, you got him.

Also, LOL at the Miami flop. Greg Fall-us things that was a bit dramatic.

Does the fact that you guys just can’t be happy with your win and enjoy playing for a title rather than try to kick UNC while their down excuse bad behavior? Of course not, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t pathetic.

You’re 8-3, and some of you still think the world is out to get you. Good grief, Charlie Brown.

jhmd2000, it’s “premeditated”, not “premediated”…Jeez, where’d you go to school? Substandard educational facilities don’t really impress us!

another over reaction by SFN, no Reddick had no right to do that, no matter what kind of trash talk 5 was giving (which he obviously was). The late hit on Russel was not that bad, stupid yes, but he was running full speed, then goes into a slide and hits him. The penalties that were assessed on the field were sufficient, end of story, move on.
