UNC player: (paraphrased) only the bank robbers who get caught get in trouble (day 90)

(picture creation credit to Plz2BStateFan)

Everyone must stop what they are doing and this video from the 3:45 mark on (before that is just a bunch of “us aganst the world” garbage) .

Anyway, you will see UNC-CH player Donte Page-Moss compare the dismissed former UNC players to bank robbers who just got caught.  You see, because if ten people rob a bank, the only one who gets in trouble is the one guy who gets caught.

I wanted to write some funny analysis/satire but no matter what I tried I just could not top his actual words.  So according to Donte the 12+ (I have honestly lost track) suspended/dismissed UNC players are just the one in ten who got caught?

If you want to see more Donte Page-Moss video, here you can see him take a cheap shot swing at Sterling Lucas after last year’s Wolfpack victory over UNC-CH.  I think Donte was suspended from their soon-to-be-vacated bowl appearance as a result of that incident.

Not to thread jack, and not to specifically challenge anyone on this thread – but the amphibious comment has taken on some serious urban legend proportions.

Everyone claims to remember it, yet no audio or video has ever surfaced of the comment. Given that would be such a gem, it seems a little incredible it’s never surfaced. It’s sort of like all the folks who swear they were watching Johnny Carson when he made the infamous “cat” joke with Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Yogi Berra did actually make a form of the amphibious comment.

I heard it, my parents heard it and my brother heard it. Not arguing, just telling what I know.

^ Memories are funny things. Everyone thinks they remember it but nobody can give you details about the exact game/circumstances of the quote that match other people who “heard” it.

The “amphibious” joke went around the NBA press in the 70s and Valvano used it often in his stand-up-comedy-like appearances.

Also, how is it that there is NO tape of one of the most famous quotes in Raleigh sports history?

  4. StateFans 10/13/2010 at 9:48 AM #

We’ve re-hashed it a million times over the last 15 years.

Nobody can tell you the game it supposedly happened. Some people say it happened on a team plane. Nobody can tell you anything about the specifics.

And, its funny that urban legend also has many other players saying the same thing — in fact, nationally, the story was that Syracuse’s Dereck Coleman said. Funny…he happened to play at the same time as Shackleford.

There is absolutely NO audio or video of the supposed comment that has ever been produced. You don’t think that would be gold?

Don’t you think the N&O…or at least ONE newspaper would have reported it? Why can’t anyone provide an archived report from the game where he actually said it?

Obviously Mensan. Maybe not Rhodes, but surely Morehead material.

Here is another funny media goof. Evidently, UNC’s Johnny White thinks that Charlottesville, Virigina, is geopgraphically positioned “down” there from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I hope Johnny White has not declared a geography major. Maybe the tutor can help him with his understanding. Any one with a high school education would know that Charlottesville is NNE of Chapel Hill.

If he’s not, he SHOULD be unc’s poster child for their compliance spiel!

How Shackleford’s quote gets him to #2 is beyond me, it was D-U-M dum, but some of these are worser (sic).

Read for another good chuckle, on a good chuckle type of day.

I unfortunately remember the “amphibous” quote all too well. AS I recall, it was a Saturday afternoon (1987 I believe) and we had just lost a very close game to Kansas and Danny Manning on national television. I remember the comment was made in a post game interview, but I don’t remember if it was local station doing the interview or if it was the ABC/CBS (can’t remember which network carried the game) nationally televised post game. Anyway, me and about 10 friends all dropped to the floor as we watched the interview unfold.

If you find yourself comparing what you do to a bank robber, you are in trouble. I don’t buy intothe”everyone else is doing it” hype.

All I know is that I heard it with my own ears. Shack had scored a ton of points in all kind of manners. For some reason it was like thirty -one or in the 30’s. He was standing in front of his locker when he said it. It did happen. WRAL was the one who had it that night on its local news.

  12. PackFanInLA 10/13/2010 at 12:14 PM #

Well if the shackleford thing is urban legend, why not modify the story a little bit??

Because WHAT I HEARD was that Marvin Austen responded to questioning about the extent of improper gifts he received and he responded:

“well, you see, I can accept bribe money with my left and right hands. I’m amphibious.”

  13. WolftownVA81 10/13/2010 at 12:33 PM #

Keep talking guys, it gets better every day. I would be so pissed if I were a UNC grad. They’ll never live this down. They will forever be the poster child for a lying, cheating program run by the most incompetent administrators/coaches ever. RIP UNC sports.

  14. gso packbacker 10/13/2010 at 1:33 PM #

I like the part where he mentions that someone came in to talk to them about it being “them against the world” Seriously, did they need to outsource that speech? Really?

Anyway, while he would not be my top pick for spokesperson, he doesn’t come across that poorly with what he is intentding to say (as opposed to how he says it). However, his bank robbing analogy could only have been worse if (ok, I’m not sure how it could have been worse). Anyway, as soon as he said that I was thinking follow up question. What sad sack reporter wouldn’t drill down into his use of a known illegal activity to support to teammates? Come on reporters, get off your knees and do your job!!!

  15. ppack3 10/13/2010 at 1:43 PM #

I swear, it really seems to me that he’s saying, “The smart guys that get fists full of cash dishonestly (like me), don’t get caught.” [Tips the 40 to his fallen homies]

SFN: We are deleting your comment that Shackleford made the amphibious remark in a television interview with Dick Vitale because it is factually incorrect. If you have ever told anyone this in the past then you may want to let them know that you were wrong. That never happened.

Shackleford made the “amphibious” remark on a new show (new at the time, anyway) called “48 Hours”. I remember it well. I was a student at State at the time, and I caught a lot of flak over that from my UNX friends. It was a big deal, because “48 Hours” was doing a piece about NC State.

I don’t remember his exact words, but “Shack” (our Shackleford was the original Shaq!) said he could dribble equally well with both hands, because he was “amphibious”, obviously meaning to say “ambidextrous”. I’m sure his whole conversation was scripted anyway, and he probably got a little nervous and spoke the wrong word.

To me, it’s not as bad as what the Carolina player said. He didn’t mix words. He MEANT to say what he said, and had no clue how bad it sounded. At least Shack just misspoke.

Two things in the past few years have stood out to me that said there was lack of institutional control. They may have seem like little things at the time but to me they were big.

    1. Marvin Austin gave a TV interview in the locker room with his Sunglasses on. Come on man you represent the University. Take those glasses off and respond to the media with great respect. Everybody is watching.

    2. Last year at the UNC/STATE game Greg Little scored a touchdown and punted the ball into the stands. He returned to the field on the next series for the offense.

I said right there that the program is out of control. And it was and more than I ever imagined.

  18. bradleyb123 10/13/2010 at 2:25 PM #

I found more about it in a Google search. The exact quote was “Left hand, right hand, it doesn’t matter. I’m amphibious.” in reference to his dribbling skill.

Here’s a good link that talks about this:

i think we’re being too hard on Paige-Moss. He’s only a sophomore at one of the most rigorous and glorious institutions in all of the world

Shack’s famous quote occured after we played Clemson at Clemson. He made alot of shots around the basket with his left hand. Reporter pointed it out when Shack made the remark. Coach V actually interupted and said that Shack had been working out in the pool alot. I believe we were on 60 minutes and they did behind the scenes with State and Duke.

  21. bradleyb123 10/13/2010 at 5:39 PM #

I’m almost 100% certain it was the show “48 Hours” (similar to “60 Minutes”). I thought that before I found some references to it on Google that backed me up.

Maybe he first said it in a post-game interview, and it was brought up on 48 Hours. But I thought he said it to the 48 Hours interviewer, not after a game.

This has nothing to do with the football team but it seems Huckleberry Hound kicked Will Graves (their biggest 3 pt threat last year) off the basketball team:
